[Bug 545599] [NEW] auto-mounting of encrypted external disks no longer works

2010-03-23 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

With current lucid, when I plug in an encrypted external USB hard drive
and provide the correct passphrase I get the following dialog:

 http://people.canonical.com/~james/nx/broken.png

This is a regression relative to karmic. (Running cryptsetup and
mounting manually works)

(Sorry if gvfs is not the right package to file this against, I have no
idea which part of the stack is breaking here.)

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-23 Thread Pako
Well, I think the position of the buttons should be defined by Mr. Mark,
after all he is responsible for the development and progress of Ubuntu
and he invests in it. Democracy? It is like hiring a Yokel cave man in
Mr. Pininfarina team to advice him about a new look for the next model
of Ferrari. There are things that can't be done a democratic way!

This bug is happening to me too, and I can confirm that it's not
happening in other applications that use spell-check such as Tomboy
Notes or Firefox.

It would appear that, however Empathy interacts with the spell-checking
library, it's not tokenizing the words it sends correctly.

[Bug 545617] [NEW] gnome-terminal closed kept a fg job running

2010-03-23 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

I was running iptstate under sudo in a gnome-terminal tab to monitor
some activities, and when I have closed those terminals (after my tests)
I have notice a 50% or so use of the CPU while the system was supposedly
in stand by (mostly idle, on the nautilus was opened)

a quick look at top has shown me iptstate was using it... which as odd
by itself to use that much CPU on my system, even worse, since I had
already closed it and it was not supposed to be running any more any
way; I think

I had run it under sudo, which could be the root cause of the issue...
not sure.

this behavior never occurred in my system, though it looks very similar
to bug #234753

after I had it $ sudo kill (pid) it died quietly and the system was idle
again

I am able to reproduce this at will, cause it happens every time I do it
again in my system...

I am not sure with logs or tests to do, but feel free to ask and I will
sure try them out and send whatever necessary.

Hmm... nevermind, it looks like this is a duplicate of Bug 508452.
However, I couldn't tell when I was submitting because 508452 does seem
that similar. Looking at the duplicates of the bug helped me see that it
must be the same according to some developer who knows more about the
situation than I do.

2010-03-23 Thread dbcoder
For all you 32-bit users out there, the fix for 64bit systems works too!
You just have to export a variable instead

I use this for a firefox startup script:

export GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1
firefox

Works just fine!!

[Bug 534677] Re: [lucid] Broken backlight control with Radeon open-source drivers

2010-03-23 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

With the deprecation of hal, gnome-power-manager must rely on the
BACKLIGHT property in xrandr; however, the ATI open-source drivers seem
not to support this property (regardless of whether KMS is enabled).

With HAL removed, g-p-m does not offer brightness controls at all.
Additionally, even if I reinstall HAL, the backlight control still does
not work -- upon pressing the brightness control keys, notify-OSD shows
the slider at a fixed value, but the slider does not move.

  I have attached (originally to bug 38057915 ) a log of gnome-power-
  manager --verbose: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/38057915/g-p-m.log --
Note that gnome-power-manager seems to be repeatedly setting the same
  brightness level with each keypress.

The Gnome brightness panel applet also behaves strangely: sometimes it
works, and sometimes it displays Cannot get laptop panel brightness.

I am using Lucid with xorg-edgers, currently booted into kernel-ppa
2.6.33, but this issue also occurs with normal Lucid packages.

[Bug 80921] Re: No subpixel rendering

2010-03-23 Thread Anders Kaseorg
Tobias, your improved-lcd-filtering PPA contains a version of poppler
labelled as “0.12.4-0ubuntu4~ppa1”. However, it is actually based on
0.12.4-0ubuntu1, and is missing the changes in Ubuntu’s 0.12.4-0ubuntu2,
even though it claims to have a higher version.

Similarly for evince 2.29.92-0ubuntu4~ppa1 based on 2.29.92-0ubuntu1,
and cairo 1.8.10-2ubuntu4~ppa1 based on 1.8.10-2ubuntu1 (updated Ubuntu
versions haven’t been released yet for these, but when they do they will
have a lower version number than your packages).

You should version packages that are based on Ubuntu’s -XubuntuY as
either -XubuntuYppa1 or -Xubuntu(Y+1)~ppa1, not anything higher, because
otherwise you might prevent the user from receiving important security
upgrades when Ubuntu releases -Xubuntu(Y+1). (If you need to release
more than one PPA version, change ppa1 to ppa2, etc.)

I was able to get a similar spelling check issue in gedit (when turning

Firefox does NOT use the same spell checker and does not share the same

[Bug 545521] Re: [Lucid] Gnome-panel applets disappear, freezes, locks up computer, 99% CPU usage

2010-03-23 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Appears to be a duplicate of bug 479826.

I fixed it by removing:

~/.gconf/apps/panel/general/%gconf.xml

~/.gconf/apps/panel/toplevels/panel_1

I think it could be related to dual monitors. I have my laptop, and then
my 24 Dell LCD that I plug into. On the Dell, when it's plugged in, I
have a panel set to auto hide. When it's not plugged in, that panel
doesn't show up on the laptop screen. This all happened randomly when I
was not plugged into the monitor.

It's a bit scary how it can completely destroy your entire system. I
couldn't connect to wireless easily because the wireless applet was
gone, it killed X and froze everything, used up tonnes of CPU and
memory. When I removed gnome-panel it basically rendered everything
(including Nautilus) useless. Quite a major bug I would say, depending
on how often it happens.

[Bug 545689] [NEW] gconf2 crashes. No way to activate XKB custom settings

2010-03-23 Thread prygme
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gconf2

gconf2 crashes on starting. It doesn't matter if I start it from .bashrc or
from a terminal emulator, It crashes in both case.
The error caused by following reasons:
- libxklavier library error
- X server error (xkbcomp, xmodmap)
of
- X server uses incompatible libxkbfile.

Very annoying bug, because I can't use neither tightvncserver because of
another bug: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=479671
If I connect to tightvncserver from some client, the keyboard layout is messed
up. The only solution was to add the following line to .bashrc:
  gconftool --set /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/layouts --type List
--list-type String [aa]

It's an old and still unfixed bug in tightvncserver package.
Now the gconf2 is broken, so I can't use neither tightvncserver.

  Binary package hint: gconf2

gconf2 crashes on starting. It doesn't matter if I start it from .bashrc or

The error caused by following reasons:
  - libxklavier library error

Very annoying bug, because I can't use neither tightvncserver because of
another bug: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=479671
If I connect to tightvncserver from some client, the keyboard layout is
messed up. The only solution was to put:

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-23 Thread Jordan Erickson
Not that this adds, in any way shape or form, any kind of useful
information...but there was a story posted regarding Ubuntu's Lucid
entering beta:

http://linux.slashdot.org/story/10/03/23/2348232/Ubuntus-Lucid-Lynx-
Enters-Beta?art_pos=1

And the first comment (and subsequent replies) are about the window
button placement. ;)

[Bug 532511] Re: terminal settings messed up after upgrade due to forced profile change

2010-03-23 Thread Chris Coulson
I'm taking a slightly different route with this now. I'm going to drop
all the changes to the profile, and instead make it possible to control
the visual appearance of the terminal from the GTK theme. It's already
possible to control the background / text colours from the GTK theme,
but controlling transparency recquires a small patch to gnome-terminal
to expose this property. I've already got a working prototype here now,
but it just needs a little bit of refining tomorrow.

This will then just behave exactly like any other change in the default
theme (new installs / upgrades) and is a much nicer solution than what
we have currently

[Bug 545695] [NEW] Workspace switcher no longer works after adding 17th workspace

2010-03-23 Thread Shawn McKenney
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

After adding the 17th workspace from the workspace switcher, switching
to any workspace triggers a switch to workspace 1. gnome-session seems
to go into some sort of tight loop. Logging out and removing ~/.gconf*
resets the workspaces and the switcher works as expected. The problem
can be reproduced by adding the 17th workspace again.

All of the visual effects are turned off.
I am using the nvidia driver 195.36.15.

I'm not sure what other information would be pertinent but I'll be happy
to help diagnose the problem if pointed in the right direction.

[Bug 476662] Re: Notifications use append instead of replace

2010-03-23 Thread Ken VanDine
Thanks for the patch!

Two things:

1) We do need the same logic applied to empathy-status-icon.c, without it we
don't get notifications when the chat window isn't open. Can you apply the
same logic there?
2) It works well for IMs from one person, but if you have incoming IMs within
the timeout period one of the notifications seems to get discarded. So it
appends the notifications for the existing notification nicely, but new
notifications from other people seem to not appear at all, even after the
existing one expires.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-23 Thread Rocko
The button re-arranger in Ubuntu-tweak (http://ubuntu-tweak.com/) is a
nice touch (albeit a bit buggy - it loses the button order if you switch
from left to right to left again), but the problem still remains that if
you change the order of the buttons it looks awful because the
'indentation' effect relies on all three buttons always being present
and always in the order max, min, close. It's a pity because otherwise
the indentation effect looks great.

[Bug 545695] Re: Workspace switcher no longer works after adding 17th workspace

2010-03-23 Thread Shawn McKenney
A little more information -

The window manager is metacity. I can go into gconf-editor and change
the number of workspaces there. The same result occurs. When the
number of workspaces is set above 16, nothing seems to occur at that
point (when num_workspaces is actually changed). However, when I try to
change workspaces, metacity dies (window frames disappear and all of the
windows move to workspace 1). gconfd-2 starts to hammer the hard drive.
By observing top, I can see that metacity is continually being
restarted. As soon as I right click on num_workspaces and Unset Key,
num_workspaces returns to 4 and everyone is happy again...

[Bug 476471] Re: gnome-panel doesn't let me add locations

2010-03-23 Thread Andrew Fenn
I just tested this in Ubuntu 10.04 Beta and it's still the same issue
(surprise surprise) as with every other version of ubuntu.

Trying the first example I gave before doesn't work. Trying the second
example I gave before does work (the same as every other version of
ubuntu).

I've attempted to look at fixing this issue myself however gnome panel
source code documentation is a mess.

The README file tells me to look at a non-existant INSTALL file. The
GnomePanel web page links to a lot of non-existent web pages and has no
helpful information at all.

[Bug 545726] [NEW] Startup applications launch before panel and become lost

2010-03-23 Thread Stuart Bishop
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

A have a added a few items to System - Preferences - Startup
Applications. One of these is loading very quickly and on a fresh boot
starts up before my panels, so there is no notification area. Its icon
appears in the top left corner of the screen and will shortly be covered
by the panel. Logging out and logging in again things work fine, as the
panel loads much faster with everything in cache.

I've only seen this happen with one of my startup applications
(jungledisk-monitor), so this might be an fault there such as not
blocking until a notification area is available.

[Bug 545733] [NEW] In Programming mode, the top row of binary numbers (33 to 63) are not working as designed.

2010-03-23 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcalctool

Expected behaviour is that by clicking on 0 values in the binary field, they
should toggle to become the number 1 and it's decimal value will appear on the
display. Toggling additional 0's to 1's will add their value in a cumulative
effect.

Odd behaviour that is occuring is primarily happening with the top row
(bin numbers 33 to 63) toggling those 0's wipe out the lower values and
odd results on the display.

I have a 64bit computer and Ubuntu Lucid 64. But the 64 bit aspect of
the binary numbers are not working properly.

Thank you.

[Bug 545733] Re: In Programming mode, the top row of binary numbers (33 to 63) are not working as designed.

2010-03-23 Thread Robert Ancell
Thanks for the bug report. Testing with the latest upstream shows this
was accidentally fixed due to another change!

** Changed in: gcalctool (Ubuntu)

[Bug 486154] Re: System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it

2010-03-23 Thread Robert Schroll
Just to confirm my previous assertion, I installed the Lucid beta on a virtual
machine. I applied my patch [1], restarted metacity, and unloaded and reloaded
Pulse Audio's module-x11-bell [2]. System bells rang the same bell.ogg sound
file, but through Pulse Audio. Additionally, I could now set the volume with
`xset b`. Thus, using this patch would result in the *exact same* behavior as
currently exists, except that Pulse Audio is making the noise instead of
metacity. Stopping the behavior, to reenable to PC speaker, is now just a
matter of unloading the module. Additionally, there are fringe benefits:
1) No delay while metacity loads the sample the first time it's needed.
2) No rate limiting of playback by metacity.
3) Consistent handling of system bell events between metacity and compiz.

Honestly, what more is desired? In several bugs related to this, I have
yet to hear a good explanation for why metacity should be handling
system bell events. Here's a chance to switch this capability to a more
sensible sub-system and solve several bugs or potential bugs all at
once. Why are we not jumping all over this? (Sorry to sound shrill,
but I'm rather frustrated at this point.)

[1] It didn't quite apply cleanly, but it was easy enough to clean up by
hand. I wasn't planning on posting a new patch for Lucid, but if it's
desired, let me know.

[2] I don't know why un- and re-loading the module-x11-bell was
necessary, but I suspect that it's related to the fact that the old
metacity had been trapping the system bell events. I suspect, but
haven't confirmed, that this won't be necessary once the new metacity is
installed and X is restarted.
