[Bug 576639] Re: Thunderbird 3.04 crashing with Ubuntu 10.04
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Gotta love the version number! :) Using 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu1, the home directory are not mounted as soon as GDM runs, which would resolve the bug as reported here. However, shortly after a user logs in, the directory do get automounted. I presume there is another process poking into user's home directory that triggers the automount (user-switcher, perhaps?). Re: [Bug 79030] Re: gnome-video-thumbnailer uses all available CPU power when using bittorrent
Good news! The new option of adding a .part suffix at incomplete downloads, included in the newer version of Transmission bittorrent client, indirectly helped me with this bug: the thumbnails aren't regenerated anymore. But this bug still exists: gnome-video-thumbnailer should wait some bigger interval before updating the thumbnails, not doing it at every single second for every file of the folder. Speaking of it, here is an idea: gnome-video-thumbnailer should generate thumbnails only for the files visible on the current nautilus view, i.e. only the files listed by the current scroll bars position. [Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing
Hi there. I try to use valgrind. I then run gnome-help from inside valgrind. I repeated EXACTLY the same steps-actions that usually generate the crash. No crash happened. See attached file gnome-help-NOT-crash.txt Then I ran gnome-help alone, without valgrind. I repeated EXACTLY the same steps-actions that usually generate the crash. I mean, I peform EXACTLY the same steps-actions as before (with valgrind) and now I get the crash. See attached files gnome-help-crash-a.txt and gnome-help- crash-b.txt. VERY IMPORTANT: when running from inside valgrdin, the printing procedure displayed the printer (HW) interface, then a pop-up window came claiming that the requested page to be printed was not available ... I cannot imagine what this means. When running alone without valgrind, the printing procedure crashed BEFORE the printer (HW) interface comes up, and no pop-up window came out. It seems that valgrind some how bounded the gnome-help behaviour so that gnome-help succeded in managing a printing page fault, while without valgrind gnome-help is not able to manage it. Sorry for my bad english ... furthermore I'm not an expert ... Any hint will be appreciated. [Bug 592747] Re: Evince crashed soon after opening a document.
[Bug 592859] [NEW] New Message Notifications in Empathy are not Attention-Grabbing Enough
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: empathy Messages regularly come into Empathy, and I regularly miss them. Some may think this is subjective, and it is. Some may also think it's just me, and maybe that's true too, but let me enumerate some of the reasons why I believe this to be the case: 1. The sound isn't loud enough. Turning up the system volume isn't an option, as it makes the sounds of everything else too loud. The sound level of notifications in Empathy is not adjustable like it is in Pidgin. 2. The new message sound isn't played if the window is focused. This may seem dumb at first, but there are plenty of times when the window could be focused, but the user would still miss the message if there is no sound. Consider the following cases: a. The conversation window is focused, but I stepped away from the computer (or looked at my desk), b. The conversation window is focused, but my attention is on the PDF (or webpage, or whatever) I have open next to it, and the new IM comes in on a different tab than the one which is selected. c. I'm looking at the conversation window, but message comes in on a tab other than the one selected. 3. The Notification Area icon doesn't get my attention very well. In the default theme, it's a white envelope which turns green when there is a new message. This violates the GNOME HIG, for attributing meaning to a color change (since some people are colorblind). One could say that white to green is still visible to a colorblind person (certainly to _some_ colorblind people, as colorblindness isn't the same for everyone), but even so, it's not hard to imagine the icon being difficult to distinguish to someone who has trouble seeing color. I am not a colorblindness expert, but I know what's in the HIG. 4. When a message comes in from a person who doesn't have a tab open in the conversation window, their icon flashes in the buddy list. That's great, except that the buddy list is often minimized or behind other stuff, obscuring the flashing. (I do like the flashing though; it makes me think of the good old ICQ days, when life was simple). I put it here because, while it is good, it's insufficient, and I don't want people to quickly reply with why don't you just look at the flashing icon in the buddy list 5. When a message comes in, in the conversation window, the icon next to the name of the person who sent the message changes from green to white. Yes, the exact _opposite_ of the notification area icon. Upon close inspection, the green and the white _are_ different icons, but barely. Without seeing the color, I don't know if I'd be able to tell the difference, certainly not at a glance. Again, HIG, etc. 6. The Window Manager URGENT bit is set on the window. This is good. The problem is that with the new default Ubuntu theme, the button in the window list doesn't grab your attention, as it looks very close to the way the button for the focused window looks, which is not very different from the way the rest of the buttons look. Is this subjective? Sure. However, I've been using Gaim/Pidgin for years, and I've never had the problem of missing IM messages. I understand that it's a hard problem. People complain when it's too annoying, and people complain when it's not attention-grabbing enough, and you can't please everybody. Can I submit though, that Pidgin has been around the block; they've been through all this before, and for quite a while now, has had a pretty standard way of getting the attention of the user. I think what they've come up with is pretty good, and it didn't happen overnight. There's no reason we have to re-invent all this stuff with Empathy. How about incorporating some of the good ideas that Gaim/Pidgin have developed over the years and consider using them. Not Invented Here really doesn't help anyone when it comes to human factors. Package: empathy 2.30.1-0ubuntu Ubuntu 8.10 ** Affects: empathy (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: Binary package hint: empathy Messages regularly come into Empathy, and I regularly miss them. Hi Uwe, Thank you! I'm feeling experimental so I'll try the proposed version and report back. [Bug 579044] Re: Setting disable_user_list to true causes gdm to crash on clicking Log In
The oem user gets removed at the end of the oem-config process. I'll have to do some checking to see if a specific option breaks it, but I notice that a standard (non-oem) install doesn't have the file at all, so it seems like the oem-config process should remove that file upon completion. Though it also seems like gdm itself might be better equipped to deal with the problem. This is not a problem with the current version in proposed, but 2.30.2 does have some fixes we are looking forward to getting, which the version in proposed doesn't offer. -- Setting disable_user_list to true causes gdm to crash on clicking Log In https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/579044 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 579044] Re: Setting disable_user_list to true causes gdm to crash on clicking Log In
It appears that the problem is in the TimedLogin feature. If you set TimedLoginEnable=true, you must also set a valid user in TimedLogin and a valid delay in TimedLoginDelay. If either of those is not set, or if the TimedLogin user is invalid, as was the case once oem was removed, then the behavior described above occurs.
