The icons for categories in the applications menu are back, which I think was the major annoyance. You can get other icons back by changing the setting about icons in menus. FWIW, I started a thread on the usability mailing list in August to get opinions on whether this change made sense or not in the gnome-panel context since I wasn't convinced a complete removal made sense. I would have loved to get more feedback on this there ;-) Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. ___ desktop-devel-list mailing list desktop-devel-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/desktop-devel-list

Tried a few days ago and had a gnome-panel without icons too, perhaps it was something with my configuration? Can someone confirm if git master has this enabled? ___ desktop-devel-list mailing list desktop-devel-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/desktop-devel-list

True, but honestly I can't remember anything about categories in Application menu. I'm for re-enable them. IMHO there is no reason to remove them now that GNOME Panel is going to be replaced by GNOME Shell. But thing about it as an incentive to upgrade to gnome-shell. You have choice: classic panel, harder to use than before or new GNOME 3.0 way, which is loaded with icons. -- Tomasz Torcz "God, root, what's the difference?" xmpp: zdzich...@chrome.pl "God is more forgiving." ___ desktop-devel-list mailing list desktop-devel-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/desktop-devel-list

Everything has been written and said about this already. The decision was made by several people after discussing this for a longer time. It has also been already discussed on this mailing list[1], mentioned in blogs on planet.gnome.org, discussed in the corresponding bug reports, etc. I have no idea what else your "wilder scale" should include. I only know that coming up with this again and again wastes time. andre [1] for example: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2009-July/msg00126.html -- mailto:ak...@gmx.net | failed http://blogs.gnome.org/aklapper ___ desktop-devel-list mailing list desktop-devel-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/desktop-devel-list
Re: Decision to remove icons from gnome-panel main menu
Hi angry user, well... just install and run gconf-editor and change the /desktop/gnome/interface/menus_have_icons key. (if I remember well) :) You may found other interesting things in gconf by the way. Enjoy. /MB Peteris Krisjanis wrote: Who did a decision to remove icons from gnome-panel main menus (Places, System and Applications) and why there haven't been wilder scale discussion about it? Decision to remove icons from gnome-panel main menu
Who did a decision to remove icons from gnome-panel main menus (Places, System and Applications) and why there haven't been wilder scale discussion about it? I know there's have been some disagreement about having or not having "too much icons" in GNOME system, but it seems someone is tired of arguing and have taken matters in their own hands. Results are awful in my very personal opinion. GNOME icons are best of the breed as visual indicators and helps a LOT to navigate fast trough menus.
