The dmesg output from comment #73 does not indicate a problem. This is
exactly what will happen every time during the device mode switch. The
first device will 'vanish' and then return as a second one with a very
different setup.

  Every time i log on/ wake up from suspend, Network-manager asks for my

  I also filed Bug #874920 because Evolution showed up with the same
  failure, but does not any more. So only network manager seems to be
  unable to read the secret till now.

If I define a additional search domain in my gnome network settings panel the 
new search domain ist not recognized.
I see in the generated resolf.conf that the additional search domain ist 
defined  as a second parameter to the command  search, in spite to the 
command nameserver where the additional nameserver has its own line.
If I change manually the 2nd search option to its own line the definition is 
recognized :

  I get the error message: There is a problem with the configuration
  server. (/usr/lib/libconf-2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status
  256) every time I log into my computer. After I click close the
  desktop loads as normal.

  This has been happening on all three of my computers since I upgraded
  to 10.04 LTS (using boht amd64 and i386 versions).

  This is not caused by the permissions issues mentioned in bug #269215
  as /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.system is chmodded 755 and /tmp is chmodded
  1777.

  Running /usr/lib/libconf-2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 from a terminal
  produces no output.

Title:
  Empathy is not working behind the proxy servers in Ubuntu 11.10

Bug description:
  Empathy is unable to connect behind the proxy servers whatever way we try. It 
doesn't utilize the proxy settings given globally to the system. There is no 
proxy option in the program also. I tried connecting to empathy from Ubuntu 
11.10 in three systems behind a proxy server and in all cases it failed. 
  I tried all of the following but none worked:

  1. Changing settings with gconf-editor ( Walk down the tree to system - 
http_proxy . Search for use_http_proxy and check it. )
  Even after doing that there is no change in behaviour of empathy
  2. gksudo gedit /etc/bash.bashrc
  export http_proxy=http://proxyhost:port/
  export ftp_proxy=http://proxyhost:port/
  save and exit
  This also didnt help anything
  3. Using tsocks and editing its config files also.
  In that case the result was:
  tsocks dbus-launch  empathy fails to retrieve the accounts list.
  tsocks empathy launches empathy, but it is unable to connect..

  Please generate a patch for this problem and release new version of
  the program.

my two intel system nor with nvidia-current, added xserver-xorg-video-
nouveau

With GTK+ 3 (at least with git master), GtkCellRendererText's edited signal
is not emitted when I click into the next cell in the treeview. It is
apparently only emitted when I press return.

This is not a problem with GTK+ 2.24.

You can see this, for instance, in GtkFileChooserDialog when creating a new
folder. Your new name for the folder will be lost if you click away instead of
typing Enter.

It also happens in Nautilus when renaming files.

Note that the upstream bug has a simple fix for this, though I'd rather that 
Ubuntu Oneiric was just updated to the latest stable GTK+ release instead of

  I've found plenty of forum posts from other people complaining about
  this but I couldn't find an existing but report in Launchpad.

  It baffles me to find that there is no way to disable the middle-click
  screen buffer paste feature without breaking the middle-click button
  on the mouse altogether.  I'm sure there are lots of people who think
  it's nifty.  However, for me and others, it is just annoying.

  If I am scrolling in a text editor like Gedit and the middle-click
  button actually gets pressed, it often pastes a chunk of text in the
  middle of the document and I don't notice because I scroll right by.
  This leads to trouble later on.

  My searching indicates that a common solution to this problem is to
  re-map the middle-click button to something else (so that it behaves
  like either the left or right button, or just does nothing), using
  xinput or by editing Xorg.conf.  However, this breaks other
  applications that use the middle mouse button for other things
  (opening and closing tabs in Firefox, middle-click scroll).

  There should be a solution to this problem other than map the middle-
  click button to something else and get a new mouse that doesn't
  accidentally click.  I don't care if it's setting an option in an
  obscure text file.

   - Open Gedit.
   - Type some text.
   - Select some text.
   - Middle-click somewhere in the document.
   - Selected text is copied to where you middle-clicked.
   - No (documented) way to disable this behavior without re-mapping the 
middle-mouse button, breaking other middle-click functionality.

works properly. I edited /usr/share/applications/evince.desktop to

  Expected behavior: When two-fingered scrolling is enabled, a two-finger drag 
should smoothly scroll the document
  Actual behavior: The view jumps to the end-point without scrolling.

  Additional info:  Input device is a BCM5974 on an Apple Macbook Air
  3.1.  Behavior returns to normal when I download the source package
  and rebuild without the libgrip patch, so it's definitely a bug in the
  interaction with the utouch stack.  Other multitouch (libgrip/geis)
  gestures (pinch-to-zoom, twist-to-rotate) work just fine.  Switching
  the touchpad to edge-scrolling works fine.

  When renaming a file in nautilus, in list view, if you copy the highlighted 
part of the name, after this you're unable to copy/paste files
  This only occurs in list view

  Steps to reproduce:
  - Open Nautilus
  - Chose List View
  - Right click a file and chose Rename. Nautilus will highlight the file name.
  - Now Right click again on the highlighted part of the name and chose Copy.
  - Press Esc
  - Now try copying a file, you will be able to chose the option Copy, but 
when you try to Paste, nothing happens.

64bit. Also the battery only lasts for 2 hours while in windows it lasts for 
4,5 hours. i reported the first problem in Ubuntu 11.4, in the hope that it 
will be fixed in 11.10, but unfortunately it did not.  i hope this issue will 
be addressed in the next release. I am not sure which package causes these 
problems.

  Although I have no more the crashes reported in bug#305546, the SVG
  thumbnailer is still working suboptimally. Sometime it stops a long
  time (you have to stop the nautilus window and the reload with F5),
  and then the previewed image is not correct. See for example the SVG
  file from Inkscape and the exported PDF preview.

  which language is to be used.

Thank you for your bug report, what you get is the GNOME version. Do you
have cups-pk-helper installed? If the GNOME version doesn't work good
enough for you, you can still running system-config-printer manually
instead

  BTRFS raid1 devices consist of two /dev/sdx nodes, and either can be
  used to mount the filesystem. One is used to mount each raid1 btrfs
  filesystem in /etc/fstab. However, nautilus, or possibly some
  underlying abstraction, decides that each /dev/sdx node must be a
  different file system, so nautilus shows me double the number of
  devices. One is marked unmounted and one is already mounted. Clicking
  on the unmounted one mounts a duplicate.

  I cannot open files on the network from within LibreOffice:
  1. Open LibreOffice Writer
  2. Navigate to somewhere on the network (as connected using Connect to 
server...)
  3. Click on any LibreOffice file.
  4. Nothing.

  However, when I make a symbolic link

  ~$ ln -s .gvfs/foo on bar/some_dir test

  I am able to open files using the LibreOffice Open File dialog.

  Also, when starting LibreOffice from the command line, it works:

  ~.gvfs/foo on bar/some_dir$ lowriter myfile.odt

  And, doubleclicking a LibreOffice file from Nautilus, works as well.

  nautilus memory leak

Bug description:
  There are other bug reports with this description, but they are either
  3-4 years old, or closed, or invalid, or expired.

  I'm not doing anything exotic, but after about an hour or two of using
  my system (not even copying or moving files, or thumbnailing, or...)
  memory usage in nautilus goes up to 1.4G or so. When I kill this task,
  re-launch nautilus, it sits happily on just a few hundred meg... and
  then begins to grow again.

  It also takes a LONG time to start up, and the system is very
  unresponsive meanwhile... like 20 seconds. This may be a useful clue?

  I tried to do a valgrind report, but it makes nautilus so slow as to
  be unusable -- like 2 minutes to open a folder on the desktop... so I
  couldn't exactly use it normally to get a good log. Nonetheless,
  here's a log I did capture.

  I trust that the data captured by ubuntu-bug will have my library
  versions, cpu type, RAM info, etc. Please let me know what else I can
  provide. Thanks!

  Desktop Ubuntu 11.10Nautilus 3.2.1 and Server running Lucid
  When copying files between folders I normally open the source and target 
directories in separate windows and then simply  drag and drop one or more 
files.   On dropping files onto the server  the 'File Operations' progress 
window opens behind the two folder windows and therefore is not immediately 
visible. This  initially led me to think nothing was happening until I poked 
around.  I have searched here for Nautilus  related bugs and could not find a 
similar report.   The Lucid server is running  NFS ,   

  Note when copying from Server to Desktop the window appears on top as
  expected!

  Not sure what apps to report versions on for Server or Desktop but
  both are recent relatively clean installs.

Thank you for your bug report, the double icon is fine but maybe by
default inserting a DVD should trigger the dvd player rather than asking
what to do?

  when i entered a dvd than two icon appear suddenly,when we login then there 
is no icon in the launcher but when i entered a dvd why there is 2 icons 
appear?i think one is enough . both  have the same function and both are same 
but there is a colour difference in them  as you see in the screenshot.
  if this is the icon for message of new dvd so this should be merge with the 
drive icon.like the other application and it shows two arrows in the launcher 
like the other application shows simple.

  Hello all, I am having a problem with one of my burners since I
  upgraded to 10.04 from 11.10, it's a lite-on DH20A4P-04. It'll mount
  the disc at startup and for an unknown amount of time after startup.
  But at some point, I can put a disc in and nothing happens, the light
  will come on and go out, but that's about it. The one directly below
  it, a lite-on LH-20A1S-12 works fine, I just don't remember having
  this problem before. Just wondering if it's something I need to file a
  bug report on, thanks for any advice.

  The copy progress dialog wasn't visible when copying files

  When copying files from an SD Card to multiple directories the copy
  progress dialog wasn't visible.  Right-clicking on the icon in the
  launcher showed the appropriate option to show the progress dialog but
  to no effect.

  I started copying files from the SD card in to one directory, then
  created a new directory, returned to the SD card, selected more files
  and began copying those into the newly created directory, while the
  original copy was still ongoing.

  I used key-strokes to initiate the copy / paste (ctrl-c / v).

  There were two nautilus windows open - the SD card in one, the other
  with the two destination directories open in tabs.

I use Gnome-Shell, and before then Unity.

But it seams that the latest nautilus update has fixed the problem.
Nautilus file process now shows in all window lists, incl. Alt+Tab in
both Gnome-shell and Unity.

Bug description:
  In all Ubuntu versions until Maverick, left-clicking on the keyboard layout 
indicator changed the keyboard layout. A very easy and intuitive way to do it, 
IMHO. The version currently in Maverick behaves differently: left-clicking 
opens a small menu, from which you can select the desired layout.
  I think this is a regression, as the old way is easier to use. I am aware, 
though, that the new way is more inline with the other indicators Ubuntu is 
currently using.
  I suggest that scrolling the mouse wheel when the pointer is on the keyboard 
indicator will change layouts, much like the scroll wheel is used to 
increase/decrease volume on the sound indicator.

  My installation of 10.10 is otherwise brilliant.  Absolutely. Nice
  strong Dell inspiron 6000 -complete reformat and clean install of
  maverick.

  only problem is if i use stand by (quite often it does) but always
  when i use hibernate - it locks to freeze and i need on/off button to
  restart the machine. Also i think the hibernate file is hogging RAM
  with something. 900Mb of my 1Gb ram is used with only 2 webpages open!
  Noticed the freeze in nautilus but also in other panes too,

  Nautilus window closes when unmounting currently explored filesystem

Bug description:
  What happens:
  In Nautilus, when exploring a mountable filesystem of a device (having it 
open in the active window/tab), unmounting this device by the unmount icon on 
the side panel causes whole window to close, having immediately followed 
unmounting. If the currently explored folder isn't the one on the filesystem 
that we unmount, then nothing happens to Nautilus window.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Mount a filesystem.
  2. Open Nautilus and explore the content of said filesystem.
  3. Unmount said filesystem, for example using the unmount icon on the side 
panel.
  4. In the current state of things, Nautilus window will close immediately due 
to unmount.

  What should happen:
  After unmounting an actively explored filesystem, the window/tab should 
change its focus to a default element, such as computer:/// - like it was 
before, or perhaps /media, /home?

  Alternatively:
  Because some consider the desired behaviour as a bug 
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/23293), there should 
be a possibility to change this behaviour to the way the end user wants it to 
be - either closing the Nautilus window/tab or changing address to a default 
element.

  It is similar to how Windows 7 explorer.exe works. I personally find
  this annoying - I have close to twenty partitions total and I like to
  unmount those on which work I have currently finished without fear of
  closing the program itself.

  It is only a matter of the last few days/weeks that I experienced this
  behaviour. Some time ago it used to work as described in What should
  happen section.

Title:
  Thumbnail Creation on Digital Camera Slows System and Crashes

Bug description:
  The USB 2.0 connection speed on my new Canon S95 camera is not very
  fast, so when browsing the images directly, Nautilus' thumbnailing
  process seems to choke the connection.

  The thumbnailing takes forever, particularly for CR2 files and long
  .MOV files. During thumbnailing, I cannot copy or view or do anything
  to these files for several minutes while the thumbnailing is taking
  place.  Sometimes the thumnailing process crashes nautilus.

  Nautilus should not automatically thumbnail images on these external
  cameras if the thumbnailing process is going to bog down the camera
  connection.

  Nautilus should either:

  1) Use a faster thumbnailing process, or
  2) Not thumbnail on digital cameras by default.

  if you create a .desktop config file and try renaming them, nautilus always 
adds the .desktop even if i delete it.

file to foobar and press enter. Nautilus renames the file to foobar.desktop. If 
i rename it to new-foobar.desktop nautilus will rename the file to

  Expected behaviour:
  - Open gedit so that it is active on your workspace (my tests show no opened 
file is needed but gedit needs to already be open)
  - In the folder window press enter to open a text document
  - Wait for gedit to become the active window
  - Press ctrl+f to search for text and perform over keyboard commands on gedit

  Actual Behaviour:

  Nautilus keeps the active window status even though gedit may be
  completely full screen. Any key commands pressed go to nautilus even
  though the window it hiding behind the now full screen application.

  gedit is just the example, it could be any application not opened with
  the mouse. It seems that because no mouse input is received the new
  window whatever it may be never becomes the active window. This is
  wrong, the application that is launched by pressing the enter button
  should also become active not just for mouse clickers.

  focus and then pressing Ctrl-L causes a location bar to appear behind

  shortcut would bring up a dialogue box in which you could type the
  path name of a folder to open, which was very handy. The functionality
  still works, but the presentation is obviously incorrect.

  SAMBA network not showing in Nautilus Browse Network option

  1)Ubuntu version = 11.10
  2) today, Oct 27 2011 installed updates, which included cups and nautilus 
related packages together with 120 other packages.
  3) Opening Nautilus  clicking on Browse Network must show my existing 
Windows Samba Network as it used to before update.
  SAMBA shared network printer configured before is expected to print.
  4) Instead: Nautilus shows only Windows Network icon and no existing 
network.
  preconfigured SAMBA printer is not available anymore. Adding printer via 
existing SAMBA network gives the same result: existing SAMBA network cannot be 
found.
  At the same time SAMBA printer disappeared and can't be found either.

  NOTE: the same thing happened when I last updated nautilus packages in
  Ubuntu 11.04, which is why I upgraded to 11.10, but now I'm facing the
  same problem.

  SEVERITY: this is really a problem, because I can't browse my Windows
  share on the office server, nor print a document on a shared printer.

Gorka, the link is dead (or actually, the entire extensions part of
www.openoffice.org seems to be down). But even if it would be there and
your workaround would work, it's still bogus since this functionality
should be included and working by default since LO 3.3. See
http://www.libreoffice.org/features/extensions/ :

Note that, in LibreOffice 3.3, many great extensions that were formerly
separate downloads have now been included in the package as standard
features:

Presentation Minimizer: (not working on Ubuntu's version of LO)
Presenter Console: (also not working on Ubuntu's version of LO).

All this fooling around is taking too much time anyway - I've got work
to do. So I'm just going to uninstall Ubuntu's version again and try the
3.4.4 packages from the website. I'm confident that LO's version will
'just work'.

I am also affected by this bug, using gnome-system-monitor
3.2.1-0ubuntu1, with ATi Radeon HD 3450, fglrx and my CRT monitor
connected via DVI-VGA adapter to DVI output.

I don't know if gnome-system-monitor is the one to blame (could this be
due to some kind of color profile or subpixel hinting feature?), but
someone with more knowledge about this should really look into this.

Title:

Bug description:
  On my system, the charts on the system monitor resources tab are
  displayed with some graphical errors.

  The most obvious manifestation seems to be faded bands along the
  charted lines, though there is also extra white around the chart area
  (rather than the grey of the window background). The chart labels also
  end up quite blurry and hard to read. Sometimes the pink line for
  memory usage seems to hover horizontally right in one of the faded
  areas, and becomes nearly invisible.

  Bizarrely, the problem is sometimes only present on one of my
  monitors. The screenshot I have attached was taken straddling the two
  monitors; the zone on the left appears normal, while the zone on the
  right is noticeably affected. Dragging the system monitor between the
  two monitors causes the issue to appear and disappear. However, other
  times there is no difference and the system monitor is affected
  equally no matter which monitor it is on.

Bug description:
  Nvidia's hybrid graphics technology Optimus (combines GeForce with
  an Intel graphics chip) is currently not supported in the Nvidia Linux
  drivers. When you install the drivers Ubuntu won't startup into
  graphics mode anymore. If you don't install the Nvidia drivers Ubuntu
  just uses the Intel graphics, and everything works fine.

  The bug: when you install Ubuntu on a PC with Nvidia Optimus, jockey
  recommends you install the (non-working) Nvidia drivers.

  Solution: detect Optimus and only recommend the Nvidia drivers when
  it's not present.

  Tested on Ubuntu 10.10 final.

I think I might have discovered the 'guilty' packages causing the controls of 
the Presenter Console not being displayed.
At first, I was shocked to learn that even when I installed the packages from 
LO's website, the issue still remained.
I then started looking (with the help of Synaptic) for any remaining packages 
which had any reference to libreoffice and which were coming from the Ubuntu 
repo's.

Turns out that even while I expected to be rid of all LO packages when
removing any package starting with 'libreoffice', there are still other
packages which don't have 'libreoffice' in their name, but still
influence the behaviour of LO (luckily this is mentioned in their
description). The suspect here is the Libreoffice UNO runtime
environment. While I have no idea what this means for me as a user if I
don't have it installed, removing all packages related to this
environment fixed the problem!

So perhaps a bug should be filed on the UNO runtime environment as well?

One more note - the packages provided on the LO website ship with their own 
version of the UNO runtime environment (exact package name is 
libreoffice3.4-ure), so it seems I don't have to do without the URE environment 
after all :-)
Without having any extensive knowledge on packaging it's kind of weird to be 
suggesting this, but perhaps there should be some kind of 'conflicts' 
dependency (?) added to either of these packages?

I think I might have discovered the 'guilty' packages causing the controls of 
the Presenter Console not being displayed.
At first, I was shocked to learn that even when I installed the 3.4.4 packages 
from LO's website on Ubuntu 11.10, the issue still remained.
I then started looking (with the help of Synaptic) for any remaining packages 
which had any reference to libreoffice and which were coming from the Ubuntu 
repo's.

Turns out that even while I expected to be rid of all LO packages when
removing any package starting with 'libreoffice', there are still other
packages which don't have 'libreoffice' in their name, but still
influence the behaviour of LO (luckily this is mentioned in their
description). The suspect here is the Libreoffice UNO runtime
environment. Removing all packages related to this environment and then
re-installing the packages from the LO site fixed the problem!

The packages provided on the LO website ship with their own version of the UNO 
runtime environment (exact package name is libreoffice3.4-ure).
Without having any extensive knowledge on packaging it's kind of weird to be 
suggesting this, but perhaps there should be some kind of 'conflicts' 
dependency (?) added to either of these packages, so Ubuntu's version of the 
UNO environment automatically gets removed when libreoffice3.4-ure is installed?

Title:
  Libre Office Presenter console doesn't display controls

Bug description:
  On Natty (tried both my updated x64 install and a fresh 32 bit live
  system), with both the stock Libre Office and version 3.3.3, the
  Presenter Console only displays the presentation on the secondary
  screen, but doesn't show the presentation controls on the primary.
  Instead, the regular LO Impress interface is shown on the primary
  screen.

  I've checked the presentation settings and these settings are correct
  (the presentation is diplayed properly on the secondary display when
  having LO on the primary display).

  Please see the attached screenshots to get an idea of the problem.

  What I expected to happen:
  -Get the presentation on the secondary display and the presentation controls 
on the primary display

  What happens instead:
  -The presentation displays on the secondary screen, but no controls appear on 
the primary display. Instead, the plain LO Impress interface is shown. The 
typical Presenter keyboard shortcuts seam to work, except for ALT-1, ALT-2 and 
ALT-3.

I am also affected. Using a Thinkpad T60. On 11.04 Fn+F12 triggered
suspend to disk, since the upgrade to 11.10 it triggers only suspend to
RAM.

  Although I have no more the crashes reported in bug#305546, the SVG
  thumbnailer is still working suboptimally. Sometime it stops a long
  time (you have to stop the nautilus window and the reload with F5),
  and then the previewed image is not correct. See for example the SVG
  file from Inkscape and the exported PDF preview.

First of all, let's remember that you don't have to fix all the CM's to
fix this issue. Ubuntu can fix this *today*, regardless of the status of
the telepathy CM's

(1) This is pointless, because a) it's not needed, and b) each CM has
different issues regarding proxy support.

* telepathy-haze

This works fine.

* telepathy-butterfly

It uses papyon, which looks like it's going to be discontinued. It has
basic proxy support, but it's not done through GIO, as it probably
should be.

* telepathy-gabble

Seems to have proxy support  through GIO, but there are issues.

* telepathy-idle

No proxy support on the horizon.

* telepathy-rakia

No proxy support on the horizon.  Or bug report about it.

* telepathy-sunshine

No proxy support on the horizon.  Or bug report about it.

Even if you fix all these issues in the connection-managers, this
*still* doesn't solve the problem that some people need proxy
configuration in a per-proxy way, as explained upstream bug #16034, you
would need modifications both in the connection managers, *AND* Empathy.

(2) I have already done that:

Some responses I've heard from upstream developers, are Nobody uses
proxies, Nobody uses HTTP connect, Sysadmins probably never allow
HTTP connect for non 443 ports, If you need special proxies for some
accounts, write your own PAC file. And similar.

The fact of the matter is that they have no urgency to fix this, or even
acknowledge the problems. In the meantime, people are completely unable
to use Empathy, and are forced to use Pidgin (or use telepathy-haze by
removing all the other CM's Ubuntu ships by default).

Again, Ubuntu could fix this *today*, it doesn't have to wait for
upstream to acknowledge this is an issue.

(3) I didn't get that.

Pedro Villavicencio:

That's only if you use global settings, and as I argued in the response
for (1); that's not enough. Upstream bug bug #22065 complains about
that, and upstream bug #16034 describes the solution, which requires
modifications to Empathy.

So, I repeat, do you want to fix this or not? Because you can fix it
right now.

  This is something which used to happen regularly though not always (I
  switched to using fallback mode for a while because of it).
  Basically, drop-down menus in Firefox such as RSS feeds (or in Natty
  without the global menu the normal application menus were affected
  too) are simply not shown when clicked on.  Context menus also fail to
  appear.  This often disappeared for no apparent reason after I had
  used Firefox for a while.  I haven't seen it for a while, but it has
  just re-appeared, possibly because I started Unity as unity
  --replace since I am currently testing an application's behaviour
  with different window managers.

  I'm sorry if this information is a bit threadbare.  Please let me know
