[Desktop-packages] [Bug 15495] Re: Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is
I disagree, dumbing down menu's will only lead to new users NOT learning in the future... Why not have a screen during install that shows the Archive Manager and what it can do (mainly create ZIP files) and educate instead ?!? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to file-roller in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15495 Title: Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is Status in Archive File Behavior Research: New Status in File Roller: New Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts: Triaged Status in “file-roller” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: A new user thinks I need to create a zip file, and doesn't know how to do it. If you don't know that a zip file is an archive, which many new users do not, then it's very difficult to tell how to create one. Create archive on the Nautilus context menu, Archive Manager in the Applications menu, etc, are all meaningless. (This happened to me today when someone I know rang me for technical support to ask how to create a zip file, and when I explained how, he said what's an archive?) Suggested fixes (to be taken with a very large pinch of salt and replaced with better suggestions): Change Create archive to Create compressed file on the context menu Change Archive Manager to Compressed Files on the Applications menu (with tooltip Create and edit compressed files) http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300655: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300655 Then won't you get questions like: What's a compressed file? Perhaps some other wording may help such as: Create a safe copy of a file. Proposed solution: * In context menu rename Create Archive to Compress... * The subsequent dialog box should be re-titled to read: Create compressed file * The input box on the dialog box should be re-labelled from 'Archive' to 'Filename' * Change Archive Manager to Compressed Files on the Applications menu (with tooltip Create and edit compressed files) More data and discussion can be found here: * http://www.designintheopen.org/profiles/blogs/zip-archive-package-or and * http://www.ivankamajic.com/?p=143#comment-23493 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/archive-behavior-research/+bug/15495/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 899631] [NEW] Login fails if you login too fast
You have been subscribed to a public bug: When I installed Oneiric I chose a one letter password since I'm the only one in my apartment and there's no need for advanced security. When I login at the login screen I have to wait for a second between my password and pressing enter, otherwise I just get back to the login screen. Also, I noticed when I tried changing my password in Ubuntu I needed to choose a really safe password, otherwise it wouldn't accept the changes. This is both inconsistent and unnecessary imo. ** Affects: lightdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Incomplete ** Tags: bot-comment -- Login fails if you login too fast https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/899631 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to lightdm in Ubuntu. -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 899882] [NEW] gnome-version.xml file in this package causes incorrect reporting from sysinfo package
Public bug reported: EXPECTATION I expect to see the correct Gnome version reported when running sysinfo. But, what is reported by sysinfo is 2.32.1 when, in fact, I am running 3.2.1 BACKGROUND Originally, I filed a bug report (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sysinfo/+bug/896512) regarding the sysinfo package incorrectly reporting the wrong version of Gnome. After digging around a bit, I discovered that the source of the error is the gnome-version.xml file in the gnome-desktop-data package. To fix the problem (locally), I copied the platform, minor, micro, distributor and date information from the corresponding gnome- version.xml file from the gnome-desktop3-data package. It is possible that gnome-desktop3-data seeks to replace gnome-desktop- data as each package refers to itself as the gnome-desktop in its corresponding README file. If this is the case, then sysinfo will need to be corrected... to read from /usr/share/gnome/gnome-version.xml first... and, if that is missing, then (do what it is currently doing, and) read from /usr/share /gnome-about/gnome-version.xml. The latter file is from gnome-desktop- data and the former is from gnome-desktop3-data. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 415320] Re: unlock keyring steals focus (no cursor in overlying window)
It occurs here, too, and reproducible. The entry-dialog pops up right after login. The problem is, that gnome-keyring is stupidly grabbing the entry focus, regardless if it has the window focus. The only solution is to enter a password. I can see that there is a good intention behind this (avoid that people mistakenly enter the keyring password into another window), but this behaviour is very unexpected in X context, and as such it is extremely annoying, especially if other dialogs appear at the same time or slightly later, as it often happens after login. This bug is also described here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=630616 ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #630616 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=630616 ** Changed in: gnome-keyring (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-keyring in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/415320 Title: unlock keyring steals focus (no cursor in overlying window) Status in “gnome-keyring” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: When logging in the two windows Unlock Keyring and Authenticate appear. Unlock Keyring is behind the Authenticate (mount /dev/sda2) window, but has the cursor in its input field. You can't get the cursor into the Authenticate input field (or any other) and can't switch to Unlock Keyring using Alt+Tab. You either have to type your Unlock Keyring password blind or bring it to the front by selecting it in the taskbar. After that you can enter the password in the Authenticate window. 1) Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch) Release: 9.10 3) I expect the cursor to be in the foremost window's input field. 4) The cursor is in the input field of Unlock Keyring although it's in the back. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 868034] Re: Huawei E220 can't connect on Ubuntu 11.10
Probably I am confused, but my belief is that by default modem-manager writes to syslog rather than a separate log file. A lsof of the modem-manager does not show an opened log file. Isn't it possible to extract the modem-manager log from either of the syslogs I attacked by simply running a command like: grep modem-manager syslog-1104.txt Anyway, I have run these tests again (I'm using the live CDs so anything I don't think to maker a copy of gets lost) and over the next few posts will attach the modem-manager and NetworkManager logs from 11.04 and 11.10. You have been subscribed to a public bug: I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.10. I have onboard sound (some kind of intel one). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 863788]
(In reply to comment #2) It's absolutely worse that what is describe on 3.4.3 version If the document used was created by a previous version, trying to edit an existing charts remove all references to the data series sources. The previous data, sometimes exist but as a table, like if they were copied from the initial data series. On columns chart type with 3.4.3 the data source is killed, and then there's no way for the users to retrieve it. Even ctrl+Z doesn't restore the chart. - Data corruption ! You need to use a previous version of the document if it saved, there's no more data. See the different print-screen attached. This as been tested and confirmed under Linux 64bits (openSUSE 11.4 / 12.1 ) + windows 7 64bits, and windows xp 32 bits (legacy LOO.exe installer) It is a different issue. AFAIK it is not the correct behavior to have the button Data table activated inside Calc. This button is useful when you insert your chart in a text document using copy-paste. All works as expected in LibO 3.4.4 under Ubuntu 10.04 x86_64 with FR langpack. Please try again with the current release. Best regards. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 880331] Re: Can no longer shutdown when laptop lid closes
Thank you David for your solution. It does work perfectly. But...I still think this is an issue and not a simplification. Why would a lambda user be forced to go through dconf-editor (which they probably don't know anything about) in order to have the laptop shutdown when they close the lid because they are finished with their session ? This seem to be a rather normal, intuitive behaviour... Especially when (as is the case on my laptop since Natty) neither hibernate nor sleep work and crash the kernel when executed... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/880331 Title: Can no longer shutdown when laptop lid closes Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: 1. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 899860] Re: oobase crash switching between a hsql and mysql based datbase
keesj, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is missing. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. One may execute at the Terminal: sudo service apport start force_start=1 If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit. If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. ** Changed in: libreoffice (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/899860 Title: oobase crash switching between a hsql and mysql based datbase Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Bit of context information: I am migrating an oobase (hsql) base application to a oobase mysql based soliution. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 899952] [NEW] Nautilus: Browsing filesystem using keyboards is unworkable
Public bug reported: In ancient 2.x versions, in a directory I could just type the name of a subdir and it would be selected. I could use backspace to correct my typing. If I hit enter, the subdir is opened and I can type a new string to select the subdir's contents. This is my desired behavior. In Nautilus 3.2.1, this doesn't work. The actual behavior is very confusing and annoying. Image a directory /dir/sub1/sub2 and nautilus browsing /dir. Actions: problem 1: Type 'sub1a'. Oops, typo: hit backspace. Nautilus will send you to / instead of deleting the last char 'a' from the text field. problem 2: Because backspace doesn't work, I tried using the delete button in my textfield after selecting the appropriate characters. This doesn't work either: it even deletes the selected files (so although I have a blinking cursor in a text-field, the 'delete' key does not act there. Just like with the backspace) problem 3: Do it again, in /dir/ now type 'sub1'. Hit enter. Now type 'sub2'. Nothing is selected, because the textfield shows sub1. Bottom line: Browsing with the keyboard is half-supported, which is arguably worse than not supporting it at all. This half-supported functionality keeps tricking me and it is frustrating. The functionality of 2.x was more intuitive. It was not in the way of other users, but it made me efficient and happy. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: consistency control keyboard nautilus usability -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/899952 Title: Nautilus: Browsing filesystem using keyboards is unworkable Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: In ancient 2.x versions, in a directory I could just type the name of a subdir and it would be selected. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 899955] [NEW] On login ignores setting, turns off screen after idle timeout
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: 1. Disable power saving 2. (Re-)boot (logoff may suffice, though I've not tested this) 3. Login and don't touch mouse or keyboard after that 4. Wait What happens: Within half an hour (on my system at least) the display signal is turned off (monitor reports No signal). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 868034] Re: Huawei E220 can't connect on Ubuntu 11.10
One striking difference between the two modem-manager.logs is that in 11.10 there is communication with ttyUSB1 in parallel, whereas in 11.04 it is type ignored after the probing. The commands that are going to ttyUSB0 seem not to be different in both logs, but the response from there stops at the moment the command AT+CGREG=2 is sent to ttyUSB1 (log from 11.10). This is supposed to switch on unsolicited status output on that port, to monitor the signal and other parameters during a connection. This seems to be a fundamental difference in the modem handling between 11.04 and 11.10. I'm not familiar with the NM/MM code though, so I can't give further assistance here. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/868034 Title: Huawei E220 can't connect on Ubuntu 11.10 Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I'm using Ubuntu in my HP Pavilion dv6745tx laptop. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 796188] Re: Feature Request: Tool: Save screenshot of area to clipboard
bf, I agree with you. In Adobe Acrobat reader it is possible, and it would be very useful to add support for this tool in Evince. I often need to get copies of limited areas of the documents that that I'm working with, but the only way to do it when you are using Evince is by obtaining a full screenshot, and editing it with an image editor (Pinta or another). I'm not sure, but it seems to be that Okular supports this feature. In reply to Marcel, you are right. With Evince you can select an image, copy it and then paste in the workspace of another application, but it isn't the same that being able to select and copy any area that you need. I hope that you can bring this tool to Evince. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to evince in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/796188 Title: Feature Request: Tool: Save screenshot of area to clipboard Status in Evince document viewer: New Status in “evince” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Binary package hint: evince I'm curious whether it's possible to add a feature to evince which allows the user the following: 1. select the screenshot tool 2. select a specific area of the document with your mouse (a rectangle: press to start selection and release mouse button when finished) 3. the selected area will be saved to the clipboard as an image which can be pasted e.g. in Openoffice.org Writer or comparable office software I'm inquiring about this feature because I know it from Acrobat Reader and it's the last feature that's keeping me from uninstalling Acrobat. I know a lot of people at university who use this tool on a regular basis when creating summaries of lectures. It's a very pleasant way to copy paste important parts of PDF documents, mainly diagrams and illustrations and imo this won't be too much of a hassle to implement. I attached a screenshot of the desired functionality as observed while using Acrobat Reader. I hope this clears it up a bit. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 899975] [NEW] Global Menu Bar Integration conflicts with some Firefox add-ons
Public bug reported: SUMMARY The Firefox add-on Tab Mix Plus has a session manager that allows you to manually store and retrieve previous sessions, including automatically- saved sessions when Firefox closes normally or crashes. When Canonical's Firefox Global Menu Bar Integration add-on is enabled, this prevents restoring a previous session. No error message is given. The Global Menu Bar Integration add-on should not affect other add-ons like this. HOW TO DUPLICATE 1. Install Tab Mix Plus, enabling its session manager. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/ 2. Open two or more tabs. 3. Close Firefox. 4. Re-open Firefox. 5. Try to restore the previous session: Tools Session Manager Last Session. Although the session is listed, nothing happens. Now, disable the Global Menu Bar Integration add-on and repeat the steps. While testing this update, I found onboard had an upstream release bump via SRU, so many of the translations were lost. We should plan to publish another update with new translations imported to language packs. -- Regards, Aron Xu -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to deja-dup in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876622 Title: Deja-Dup not fully translated into Simplified Chinese Status in Déjà Dup Backup Tool: Invalid Status in OEM Priority Project: New Status in OEM Priority Project oneiric series: New Status in Ubuntu Translations: Fix Committed Status in “deja-dup” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Version: deja-dup 20.0-0ubuntu3 Description: Deja-dup is not fully translated into Simplified Chinese. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 395281] Re: pam_ck_connector.so is called for non-login sessions
This bug affects 11.10 and rabbitmq. The computer will not shutdown via lightdm or gnome session because lightdm thinks rabbitmq is still running. It's worth noting I don't use the ubuntu provided rabbitmq packages. Instead I use the packages from rabbitmq.com . I haven't tested this issue with the ubuntu rabbitmq package. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/395281 Title: pam_ck_connector.so is called for non-login sessions Status in GDM: The Gnome Display Manager: Fix Released Status in “consolekit” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in “gdm” package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: Binary package hint: gdm I have kerneloops installed and with new gdm from karmic the kernoops user is listed as real user in the gdm greeter. from /etc/passwd kernoops:x:112:65534:Kernel Oops Tracking Daemon,,,:/:/bin/false kerneloops version is 0.12-0ubuntu5 ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 Date: Fri Jul 3 20:48:24 2009 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10 Package: gdm 2.26.1-0ubuntu1 ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, user) LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-1.14-generic SourcePackage: gdm Uname: Linux 2.6.31-1-generic i686 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gdm/+bug/395281/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
