Bug description:
In Ubuntu 16.04 Noto Sans CJK is the default font for rendering
Chinese. After having struggled with a few issues, I believe that we
finally achieved the desired improvement of the rendering experience.

So now I ask: Is there an interest from Japanese and Korean users to
consider a switch to Noto Sans? (The fonts are already installed for
  all users on Ubuntu 16.04.)

Title:
  Time to drop 69-language-selector-zh-??.conf?

Status in language-selector package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
With the transition to Noto Sans CJK as default font for Chinese, we
have established a fontconfig configuration for rendering Chinese
under an *English* locale via these three files:

  /etc/fonts/conf.avail/64-language-selector-prefer.conf

  /etc/fonts/conf.avail/65-fonts-arphic-ukai.conf

  /etc/fonts/conf.avail/65-fonts-arphic-uming.conf

(I questioned the need for the two latter in bug #1560548, but I think
we'd better consider the need for the 69-language-selector-zh-??.conf
  files first.)

So, if I have understood the feedback from Chinese users correctly,
both Chinese and Japanese are properly rendered under an English
  locale in Ubuntu 16.04.

It's my belief that what's happening if you switch to a Chinese locale
is that one of the 69-language-selector-zh-??.conf files is enabled,
and Japanese is no longer properly rendered while there is no
  improvement in rendering Chinese.

If I'm right, I think we should drop 69-language-selector-zh-??.conf.
  Did I miss anything?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1731694] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 has an older version of ubufox than 14.04, 16.04, 17.04

2017-11-12 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Thanks for taking your time to report this issue and help making Ubuntu
better.

Indeed, it looksl like version 3.4 was only released for older Ubuntu
releases. I tried looking at the publishing history
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubufox/+publishinghistory), but
couldn't really find any info as to why.

2017-11-12 Thread dino99
Dont really understand why you are worrying about that transitional
package. Its description says:

This is a transitional dummy package to ease the migration
from the ubufox to the new xul-ext-ubufox package.
You can remove it safely.

So nowadays xul-ext-ubufox is used instead, and 'ubufox' should be
listed for archive removal as there is no depend.

Public bug reported:

Steps:

1. Change locale to English GB
2. Start language-selector

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1715435] Re: Can't lock screen with keyboard shortcuts when using lightdm

2017-11-12 Thread Janne Snabb
I am using gdm3 (AFAIK) and super-L also stopped working just now when I
did "apt dist-upgrade". So in my case it does not seem to depend on
lightdm vs gdm3.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1715435] Re: Can't lock screen with keyboard shortcuts when using lightdm

2017-11-12 Thread Janne Snabb
In my case I was able to workaround this issue by changing the lock
shortcut from super-L to ctrl-alt-L. All shortcuts using super are
broken. My "window action key" in gnome-tweaks is "super". So it appears
that it is impossible to use the window action key for shortcuts any
more after some very recent updata.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1726464] Re: Can't easily move the cursor between monitors when the dock is set to auto-hide

2017-11-12 Thread Michele
@Rasmus: what's "this"? You mean just allowing the user to trigger the
dock by keyboard shortcut? Or is there some smarter/more optimized mouse
gesture to trigger the dock in Unity?

Bug description:
The sticky edge thing between monitors is very annoying as the cursor
never ends up where it should when it's moved over to the other
screen. It's annoying to the degree that I feel like I can not use
multiple monitors with standard Ubuntu anymore.

Unity had an option to disable this, please add one to Gnome as well.

After installing the update, restart your computer.

Open the Settings app and verify that things appear to work fine.

  Regression Potential

gnome-settings-daemon is required for the login screen so a severe bug could

  Test Case
  =
Note that this is a two-part fix. You will need the 3.26.2 versions of both
gnome-settings-daemon and gnome-control-center.

  1. Create a sample document with Text Editor and save it to your home folder.
  2. Open the Files app. Select the sample file and press Delete to send it to
the Trash.
  3. In the Files sidebar, click Trash to verify that the file is there.
  4. Open the Settings app.
  5. Open the Privacy panel. Click "Purge Trash & Temporary Files". Click
"Empty Trash" then confirm "Empty Trash".
  6. The Trash folder in the Files app should be empty now.

  Regression Potential

This fix is part of the GNOME 3.26.2 bug fix release.

The D-Bus method to empty the trash shouldn't be used by anything
besides gnome-control-center. If another app does use that, it will
need to be updated for the new D-Bus address.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1731757] [NEW] When unlocking keyrings, seahorse should remember choice for "Automatically unlock this keyring"

2017-11-12 Thread Andreas E.
Public bug reported:

As a user, I want to keep some specific secrets under special protection, i.e.
only manually unlocked on demand and not at login.
Everytime that I manually unlock a keyring, the password dialog contains a
preselected checkbox "Automatically unlock this keyring whenever I'm logged
in". To preserve the status quo (keyring not automatically unlocked) there is
always user interaction required to uncheck the checkbox. In other words,
seahorse defaults to reduce the level of security.

Expected behavior:

- The checkbox should not be preselected.
Rationale:
1. While there might exist cases where a user later wants configure a
keyring to unlock automatically, this is rather a rare case. It causes much
less effort to check the checkbox when you really want to instead of unchecking
it every time.
2. This is very very prone to user error. Here, user error affects security.
3. Once the checkbox is checked, this cannot easily be reverted because the
password dialog won't appear anymore.

- (Maybe) The checkbox should be completely removed.
See justification in https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=576676
(planned to be included 8 years ago)

I just found this bug has been reported and discussed upstream 3.5 years ago
with a patch submitted that has neither been released nor even reviewed. Now in
the 4th subsequent Ubuntu release users can still not benefit from it. Apart
from the bug itself, the kind of upstream bug-handling is very disappointing
for an app that is at the core of the OS security.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1731738] Re: Do not prompt to install transitional packages

Thanks for your report.

Well, transitional packages don't hurt, and it wouldn't be worth the
effort to maintain code in language-selector to exclude such packages.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1606078] Re: No sound with Ubuntu 16.04

2017-11-12 Thread rescoriz
alsamixer misidentifies the speaker channel as a headphone. In fact
raising one of the headphones channels allows the speakers to work.

The problem returns the next time you use the headphones, as the
computer will lower the volume to zero once again as you plug out the
headphones from the jack.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1232928] Re: The wifi regulatory domain is ignored

2017-11-12 Thread Lucas Kocia
This was requested as an option in Network-manager a while ago (see
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=720331). Current work-around appears
to be to invoke:
"sudo iw region set AU"
or whatever char code other then AU you wish.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1718824] Re: The analogue audio does not work on the Dell USB Dock

2017-11-12 Thread Hui Wang
Sorry, forgot to add conf file to build sys, then the conf file (dell-
dock-tb16-usb-audio.conf) is not installed to /usr/share/pulseaudio
/profile-sets/.

I will send a patch to upstream to fix it first, then backport it to
Xenial and Artful.

  [Impact]

If users use the latest Dell USB Dock, e.g. TB16, they will found the
analog audio (lineout jack) can't work under ubuntu linux

  [Test Case]

After applying the fix, users can play sound via analog speaker or
lineout freely. Without the fix, users can't play sound from lineout
  jack.

  [Regression Potential]

No any possibility to introduce regression since this fix just adding
a new dock's support, it does not change any existing code.

  [Other Info]

  No more info here

  Steps:
  1. Cold boot system with BME/IE connected
  2. Plug in a speaker to Line-out jack
  3. Set Analog Stereo Output from Sound settings

Expected results: Line-out port can work

Actual results: Line-out port not work

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1731833] [NEW] Surface P4 -Network adapter bug(frequent disconnections)

2017-11-12 Thread John Ross
Public bug reported:

After finding myself somewhat disappointed (again)with Windows 10, I decided to
switch back to Ubuntu. Picking up 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" - Alpha amd64
distro for my Surface 4 Pro, I got stuck with the network disconnections bug
explained here; additionally, I have identified a few less problematic device
issues like camera, poor sound quality, no touch screen, and no Bluetooth pen
as so far. Back to the network adapter, after researching a ton of forums, I
end up with this one hoping that the solution number one from Jesse will help.
I run "$ sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf" command and fund
[Device]
Wifi.scan-rand-mac-address = no in place. In desperation, I have changed it
to "yes" hoping that NO might interfere with this distro only, but the results
are the same as was before. Disconnections occurred as frequent as before with
exactly same patterns. As I am inexperienced with Linux, I depend on your help,
can anyone guide me what to do next, please?

** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1705369] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 boots to black screen when using Nvidia drivers (on a desktop with an Intel GPU)

2017-11-12 Thread Daeld
It has been clear for a while now that Ubuntu actually has a 2-year
release cycle. I have used ubuntu since 8.10, always using the most
recent release but since 10.04 I have considered that LTS stands for
long term STABLE because of exactly this kind of problem with 17.10. So
I now consider the non-LTS releases to be a "dev/tester" release.
Ubuntu doesn't officially say that, but I notice that if you go to the
download page, 16.04.3 is the first option available. I think that
Canonical should just be honest about it. I would still use the
"dev/test" releases and they could take more risks. When I recommend an
ubuntu distro to a new user, I will usually recommend the LTS because I
don't want them to have to mess around and be put off. This is the
reason why we still have bug #1 an issue for laptops and desktops

  SRU Request:

  [Impact]
Some systems don't play well when the dGPU is disabled. It should still be
possible to use the Intel iGPU without disabling the dGPU.

  [Test Case]
  1) Enable the -proposed repository, and install the new
"ubuntu-drivers-common"

  2) Make sure the nvidia packages are installed, and enable power saving mode:
  sudo prime-select intel

  3) Restart your computer and attach your /var/log/gpu-manager.log. see
if the system boots correctly. If unsure, please attach your /var/log
  /gpu-manager.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log

  4) Install the mesa-utils package:
  sudo apt install mesa-utils

  5) Check the output of the following command (which should mention Intel):
  glxinfo | grep OpenGL

  [Regression Potential]
Low, as the feature is disabled by default. This is only for hardware
specific workarounds.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1731838] [NEW] sane , xsane not recognizing AIO HP Scanner

2017-11-12 Thread Abel Thomas
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu release used is 17.10. The version of package is
hplip-3.17.10. I expected the scanner to be detected after installing
the latest HP driver. After i ran hp-check, it says no scanners
discovered.

Scanner was detected by simple scan and Xsane in 17.04. This is
happening since the Upgrade from 17.04 to 17.10. However, the Printing
functionality works just as expected in 17.10.
