[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1697450] Re: Gnome Shell hangs at startup

2018-01-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Ah, yes. Sorry but your bug 1726600 is a duplicate of bug 1505409. And I
think this one is different to those two. It just means the wrong .crash
file was sent...

Please try following the steps in #15 again, or repeatedly, and we'll
see if we can find an instance of this one.

  I have an intel card:

I'm not sure how to debug this further, but I had similar issues with the
installer from Zesty as well (see

With Artful, at least it gets past the splash screen but then it hangs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time

2018-01-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Also note we're still waiting for mutter and gnome-shell v3.26.3 to
reach Ubuntu 18.04. Some leak fixes have gone into 3.26.3 but it's not
yet released. It will be interesting to see what, if any, improvement
v3.26.3 makes for people here.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1505409 ***

This bug should have been kept as Expired ideally, especially since the
original reporter has not yet replied to comment #6. And users of newer
Ubuntu releases should log new bugs in future, please.

That all said, looking at the attached Stacktrace.txt and
StacktraceSource.txt, I can tell this is actually a duplicate of the
most common gnome-shell crash; bug 1505409

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1660619] Re: kernel: [drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915]] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe B

2018-01-01 Thread jeffbl
I'm seeing this regularly as well. Often I am doing something with video
or audio. This last time, I launched an mp3 in VLC, and the screen
immediately froze. The audio kept playing. About 15 minutes later, when
the mp3 ended, the screen immediately unfroze and everything seemed
fine.

[155642.708062] [drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915]] *ERROR* Atomic update
failure on pipe A (start=5294256 end=5294257) time 155 us, min 2146, max
2159, scanline start 2143, end 2164

Ubuntu 17.10
Lenovo Thinkpad x260

x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

It has been happening once every 2 days or so, but has on occasion
occurred multiple times on the same day. Often, I can't wait to see if
it will come back, and sometimes it never does, so I have to reboot.
This is brutal for things like presentations, having no idea if the
machine will suddenly just freeze.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1716654] Re: [System Product Name, Realtek ALC1220, Pink Mic, Rear] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

2018-01-01 Thread Stephen
I wanted to add to the above, while the crackling was heavily present
for youtube, an mp3 played in clementine, and an mp4 video file in
smplayer, I ran ubuntu-bug -s audio, and the test tones were all clear,
except for a brief moment of static at the very last second. I ran the
test twice to confirm, and I reconfirmed that the crackling status was
still present in all other sources. As above, typing pulseaudio -k and
waiting a few seconds before restarting audio sources fixes it for an
indeterminate amount of time.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1716654] Re: [System Product Name, Realtek ALC1220, Pink Mic, Rear] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

2018-01-01 Thread Stephen
I am also affected by this bug.

my system uses these codecs
/proc/asound/card0/codec#0:Codec: ATI R6xx HDMI
/proc/asound/card1/codec#0:Codec: Realtek ALC1220

on an Asus Prime x370a Pro motherboard with a ryzen 1600X.

This problem was first observed in Ubuntu 16.04.3, with kernel 4.4 and
the 1201 bios for this board.

The board is now running 3401, and Ubuntu 17.10, in order to have access
to a more recent kernel.

I installed the hwe update to 16.04 first, bringing my kernel version to
4.10 or 4.11, but it made the login screen and all terminals distorted
and unreadable, so I was unable to test in that state - a state repeated
after the clean install of 17.10, but which I found was due to ubuntu
trying to set an ultra wide resolution to my 4k monitor, and being
unable to display 4k i I corrected by switching from HDMI to Display
Link Cable.

In the prior configuration I confirmed that the distortion occurred over the
HDMI to my monitor speakers, as well as over the analog jack output. In my
case, the distortion sounds identical to the recording made by Gargoyle above,
and seemed to come and go in 16.04.3. using pulseaudio -k in a terminal gets
rid of the problem for 10 minutes to several hours (or, perhaps it comes and
goes away on its own and i miss it).

In addition, if it is of consequence, I had been running Ubuntu 16.04
since launch on a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R board's sound with no problems.
After swapping the board to the Asus prime X370a pro 3 weeks ago, this
problem appeared.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1740792] [NEW] Automatic login still requires user password after suspend/hibernate

2018-01-01 Thread Niklas Rosenqvist
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 17.10
Release:17.10
gnome-control-center 3.26.2

When I set Ubuntu to automatically login a user the user still has to
enter their password when resuming from a suspended session. The only
option I can find to fix this is to disable the lock-screen completely,
which I don't want to since I still want it to be an option to manually
lock it. Setting Privacy > Screen Lock to off doesn't affect this
behavior at all.

The solution seems to be to use dconf-editor and change
org.gnome.desktop.screensaver.ubuntu-lock-on-suspend to false. I got the
solution after asking on askubuntu.com:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/990056/turn-off-requesting-user-
password-after-suspend-17-10

I'm having a little trouble following the difference between netpbm-
free and the upstream version of netpbm available at
http://netpbm.sourceforge.net, so I'm not sure if the version numbers
are comparable, but it appears that the netpbm-free package is
woefully out of date with upstream.

I'm trying to use the -data option of pnmmontage which is was
introduced into (upstream) version 10.06 of pnmmontage in 2002 (see

http://netpbm.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/netpbm/stable/doc/HISTORY?view=markup).

While I'm not sure if the version numbers can be compared easily, it
appears that Ubuntu is at 10.0 while the upstream netpbm libraries are
at 10.35.51, which is 6 years covering 40 or so releases ahead of
  Ubuntu/Debian's version.

What can be done to bring Ubuntu (and Debian) back up to date with the
upstream versions of netpbm? Are there some licensing issues that are
  holding the repackaging up?

This is also stated in their source preparation script: "removing the

I noticed that Fedora is removing "ppmtompeg". So I guess this is the
"solution" to the license problem.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1740746] [NEW] No ethernet after installing ubuntu 17.10 due to MAC address problem

2018-01-01 Thread Rikard N
Public bug reported:

When doing a fresh install of Ubuntu 17.10 I notice that the installer
didn't detect my wired ethernet correctly. I went through with the
installation and I could still not connect to the internet. In the
network settings I found that the MAC address was incorrect. It was set
to ED:0B:00:00:E0:00 which is not the correct MAC address. My previous
installation of Ubuntu 16.04 could find the correct MAC address
automatically.

I tried setting the correct MAC address in the network settings but that
made the wired connection disappear from the network settings
altogether.

My work around is to run the following commands at boot time:

ip link set dev enp6s0 address xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
ip link set dev enp6s0 up

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1720594] Re: Right click Files in launcher unity ubuntu 18.04

2018-01-01 Thread Khurshid Alam
Yes, it's a known issue. The quicklist bookmark plugin only works if the
application is running. In previous versions Nautilus and nautilus-
desktop were combined into a single package. But two are different
processes and only nautilus-desktop is running. Dynamic quicklist can
only work on Nautilus the app itself. One possible solution is to use
static quicklist for bookmarks. But Unity may not use nautilus in future
versions. So I am marking it as low importance.

annoying "Call from" on my headset. My headset seems to think a

the audio will start to play and after a little while the "call from"

Status in gnome-software package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
In bug #1717951 Imagemagick was already removed from being displayed

It is still listed in GNOME-Software which causes some (potential)
  usability issues:

Users can still test the "imagemagick" app from within Ubuntu Software
and decide to remove it from there. Because that app looks dated, ugly
and out of place in a modern desktop environment. Removing Imagemagick
has the bad side-effect of removing printing support while user won't
even realize that Imagemagick was printing related at all.

Thus I propose to remove the app from being listed as installed in

prevent users from removing it manually (and unvoluntarily CUPS with
