Suspend to ram causes some glyphs to draw consistently wrong or even
appear blank in gtk/gdk/pango/cairo apps. xterm/xmessage unaffected.

Laptop, using "intel" (or "nouveau" ?) driver.

* reproducible: sometimes, eventually. Problem comes and go, severity

* *some* glyphs are affected. For example, letter 'a' of a certain
size will be replaced by colored garbage at many places where it

), but other 'a' with different size, italic, bold, etc will be
unaffected.

* in some applications (e.g. xfce whisker menu), some glyphs are
rendered correctly or not depending on the direction of mouse

* in menu of gtk application, some glyphs are "fixed" by opening the
menu, but not all. For example, in xfce4-terminal, letter A of
"Affichage" and its menu content as well as "Aide" is affected.
Opening "Affichage" menu does not fix anything. Opening "Aide" menu
fixes the "A" of "Aide". Changing window size reactivates the bug on

# Additional information
This looks like a cache corruption somewhere.
On IRC #pango, someone suggested a bug in Intel driver.
Running `xfce4-appearance-settings` and there changing any of:
* antialiasing enable/disable,
* hinting strength,
* subpixel alignment
* or dpi
immediately cures the bug (see
2016y02m16d_21h31m52s_0100Z_x_bug_disabling_antialias_immediately_cures_problem.png
)

Setting back the exact same parameters immediately reactivates the bug
(see

2016y02m16d_21h32m11s_0100Z_x_bug_reenabling_antialias_reactivates_problem_shadow_unaffected.png).

It is believed that keeping any new settings for a while will have the
bug reoccur.

It is not like bug 1536751. That one affects rendering quality of
*all* glyphs, at all times, depending on dpi. This is not the case
here: *some* glyphs (randomly chosen) are drawn corrupted (replaced by
garbage or absent), not always.

Using the nvidia proprietary driver 361.42 isn't a WORKAROUND as it causes
black screen on boot as per:

  search field loses focus to the list view of the results.

  The correct behavior would be to maintain focus until we stopped
  typing or even manually changed focus.

  I've added a screencast of the problem as an attachment.

  
  PS: I have no idea if this dialog is provided by nautilus, so I'm not marking 
it here. Also, I tried using xprop to get the correct package, but it only 
reports the application using it, not the one providing.

This is still an issue with Ubuntu 16.04 and Thunderbird 52.9.1(64 bit)

The location of the setting is changed. It is now Edit -> Preferences ->
Display -> Formatting -> Fonts & Colors -> Advanced -> Text Encoding,
but when the

Text Encoding
  Set the default text encoding for sending and receiving mail
Outgoing Mail:

setting is Western (ISO-8859-1) as in the attached screenshot, outgoing
plain text messages are still encoded as Windows-1252

  When composing or replying in Thunderbird, the default encoding is
  Western (Windows-1252) regardless of the setting of Edit ->
  Preferences -> Display -> Advanced -> Text Encoding.

  It doesn't matter that the setting for Outgoing Mail: is "Western
  (ISO-8859-1)" or "Western (Windows-1252)", either way the outgoing
  message is windows-1252 encoded.

  If the setting for Outgoing Mail: is "Unicode (UTF-8)", then the
  outgoing message is utf-8 encoded, so that works. It is only "Western
  (ISO-8859-1)" that doesn't work.

I have a clean Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop install with defaults on an HP Envy

I get the same error

WIFI works

PCI Ethernet and USB Ethernet connectors both fail when adding them
static or DHCP via Network Manager

  2. Configure a network device and login to the partition through ssh.
  3. Now you can see the following output

  After some investigation we found couple of suggestions like
  1. Ubuntu(version <17.04): Creating an empty 
file(/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf) and 
restarting NM,
 solved the issue.
 
  2. Ubuntu(version 17.10): Copying the said 
file(10-globally-managed-devices.conf) from /usr/lib to /etc/ and modifying the 
 "unmanaged-devices" to none, resolved the issue.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   Applications menu for GNOME3 based desktop environments doesn't get
  populated with recently installed app using apt or GUI apps like
  gnome-software, budgie-welcome (Ubuntu Budgie)

  Users need to physically logout and login again before they see the
  application appear in their menu.

  This is an intermittent issue - some installs work correctly, some
  installs dont display in the menu.  After logging out and logging in,
  those installs that didnt display, now appear in the menu.

  This affects all desktop environments that use gnome-menus to
  recognise new/changed/deleted applications.  Primarily this would be
  Unity and Budgie Desktop.  Not sure about GNOME Shell or other desktop
  environments

  [Test Case]

  Install an application using apt (command line), GNOME Software or
  through budgie-welcome (Ubuntu Budgie only) - The application icon
  should appear in the menu of the desktop environment being used.

  Remove an application through apt, GNOME Software and/or budgie-
  welcome (ubuntu budgie) - The application icon should disappear from
  the menu of the desktop environment being used

  Repeat the above two test cases several times (e.g. 10x) with
  different applications

  [Regression Potential]

  Arguably the risk is that the patch introduces potential instability
  into the installation sequence that could cause crashes.  That's the
  worst case scenario.

  The mitigation here is that the patch is the exact same patch used in
  17.04 and 17.10.  It was also used in 16.04 and 16.10 - in these two
  cases the patch did not contain a one line fix introduced in 17.04
  that fixed a crashing race issue in budgie-desktop.

  Consultation with the uploader to 18.04 (Jeremy) is a must here to discuss 
possibly reasons why when merging with Debian, the ubuntu specific patch was

  Search field in "Open file" dialog loses focus after every character

Bug description:
  When we click in the magnifier icon next to the "Open" button in a
  (system provided) "Open File" dialog to search for some file by name,
  after each character typed, if there are any search results, the
  search field loses focus to the list view of the results.

  The correct behavior would be to maintain focus until we stopped
  typing or even manually changed focus.

  I've added a screencast of the problem as an attachment.

  
  PS: I have no idea if this dialog is provided by nautilus, so I'm not marking 
it here. Also, I tried using xprop to get the correct package, but it only 
reports the application using it, not the one providing.

  What happens instead: remote X11vnc session unusable due to crash in
  gnome-shell when disconnecting HDMI monitor under Ubuntu Desktop 18.04

  I'm using a stable system that works fine when the monitor is
  connected; also X11VNC works fine.

  But I want to access the GUI remotely via X11VNC when the HDMI monitor
  is disconnected then the system is not usable (lots of gnome-shell
  errors in syslog) and sometimes the gnome-shell will also segfault
  (the segfault is not in this bugreport). The X11 remote viewer is full
  of clutter (see screencast).

Title:
  nautilus slice  error copying files

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  When copying certain files under Nautilus a 0 byte file is created and
  error 'Error splicing file: Input/output error' is reported. It is not
  clear what sort of drives are affected but it certainly occurs copying
  to Dropbox and to a USB flash drive (NTFS).

  Doing the copy with 'cp' at a terminal works fine. All files tried are
  normal photos and docs, nothing large.

  I have an industrial PC that needs to run Ubuntu. Installing from USB
  stick was a hassle. (didn't work in dozens of combinations of memory
  stick (kingston/adata), usb slot (front, back), distribution(14.04,
  16.04, 18.04), variant (server, desktop, mini, net)

  When I finally got it installed, the PC would hang after booting,
  never completing to the login. A recovery boot allowed me to install
  ssh, and using SSH I could see the wayland process. I'm a bit wary of
  wayland, so I removed it and now the system boots.

Hello,

I have to say it happens very rarely with newer versions, it's much more
stable on my computer. But on another slower computer, it tend to happen
more frequently. I have found a workaround, which is deleting all local
cache of evolution, forcing it to resync the messages.

I can give you a mail account on my server if it helps for testing it
out. Might be the server/client combination problem too.

   Applications menu for GNOME3 based desktop environments doesn't get
  populated with recently installed app using apt or GUI apps like
  gnome-software, budgie-welcome (Ubuntu Budgie)

  Users need to physically logout and login again before they see the
  application appear in their menu.

  This is an intermittent issue - some installs work correctly, some
  installs dont display in the menu.  After logging out and logging in,
  those installs that didnt display, now appear in the menu.

  This affects all desktop environments that use gnome-menus to
  recognise new/changed/deleted applications.  Primarily this would be
  Unity and Budgie Desktop.  Not sure about GNOME Shell or other desktop
  environments

  [Test Case]

  Install an application using apt (command line), GNOME Software or
  through budgie-welcome (Ubuntu Budgie only) - The application icon
  should appear in the menu of the desktop environment being used.

  Remove an application through apt, GNOME Software and/or budgie-
  welcome (ubuntu budgie) - The application icon should disappear from
  the menu of the desktop environment being used

  Repeat the above two test cases several times (e.g. 10x) with
  different applications

  [Regression Potential]

  Arguably the risk is that the patch introduces potential instability
  into the installation sequence that could cause crashes.  That's the
  worst case scenario.

  The mitigation here is that the patch is the exact same patch used in
  17.04 and 17.10.  It was also used in 16.04 and 16.10 - in these two
  cases the patch did not contain a one line fix introduced in 17.04
  that fixed a crashing race issue in budgie-desktop.

  If the ld cache configuration is wrong, the correct shared objects
  contained in the package are never found or wrong versions being
  picked up.

  Example:

  libnss3 is defined by a quite a few packages including Thunderbird, libnss3 
and Firefox.
  Depending on the particular linker cache config, the wrong version may be 
picked up.

  Mitigation: enhance /usr/bin/firefox to explicitely include the
  correct path of its shared objects in the loader path (cf. attached
  patch).

  This bug is ***serious, as it scares people away from Evolution. I have setup 
my main email account as IMAP+. Most of the email are downloaded correctly, but 
some of them are not. From the message source, it seems that is a MULTIPART 
message, and not all parts are loaded. When the problem happens, all headers 
are not displayed when previewing the mail, but somehow the "From" in the list 
is correct. To view the email, I have to use my phone (K9 Mail) or Thunderbird. 
I am really wanting to switch to Evolution because I think is an overall 
better, more performing and more integrated program, but this stupid bug is 
causing me to think it over.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   Applications menu for GNOME3 based desktop environments doesn't get
  populated with recently installed app using apt or GUI apps like
  gnome-software, budgie-welcome (Ubuntu Budgie)

  Users need to physically logout and login again before they see the
  application appear in their menu.

  This is an intermittent issue - some installs work correctly, some
  installs dont display in the menu.  After logging out and logging in,
  those installs that didnt display, now appear in the menu.

  This affects all desktop environments that use gnome-menus to
  recognise new/changed/deleted applications.  Primarily this would be
  Unity and Budgie Desktop.  Not sure about GNOME Shell or other desktop
  environments

  [Test Case]

  Install an application using apt (command line), GNOME Software or
  through budgie-welcome (Ubuntu Budgie only) - The application icon
  should appear in the menu of the desktop environment being used.

  Remove an application through apt, GNOME Software and/or budgie-
  welcome (ubuntu budgie) - The application icon should disappear from
  the menu of the desktop environment being used

  Repeat the above two test cases several times (e.g. 10x) with
  different applications

  [Regression Potential]

  Arguably the risk is that the patch introduces potential instability
  into the installation sequence that could cause crashes.  That's the
  worst case scenario.

  The mitigation here is that the patch is the exact same patch used in
  17.04 and 17.10.  It was also used in 16.04 and 16.10 - in these two
  cases the patch did not contain a one line fix introduced in 17.04
  that fixed a crashing race issue in budgie-desktop.

  Consultation with the uploader to 18.04 (Jeremy) is a must here to discuss 
possibly reasons why when merging with Debian, the ubuntu specific patch was

  Applications menu doesn't get populated with recently installed app

  For example, after installing Firefox using apt, its shortcut does not appear 
immediately in the applications main menu. It only appeared there after I 
rebooted (maybe logging off also does the job).

Title:
  Computer sluggish/irresponsive for several minutes after hibernation

Bug description:
  Hi,
  my computer is very sluggish for a good five minutes after thawing from 
hibernation.

  Booting the system and the thawing process in itself seems to run fine
  : the console displays the progress of reloading contents into RAM at
  a satisfying pace, then the lightdm unlock interface displays.

  From this point on, things become strange : the computer has an
  constant and intense hard drive activity and applications do not
  respond to input in a swift manner (moving the mouse cursor works in
  "real time" though, and the clock, which displays seconds, also works
  almost normally).

  This reminds me of what happens when you set focus back to an
  application that had been paged to swap : it is irresponsive until it
  is back in RAM. Except this happens for all applications at once.

  This stops after several minutes (more than five) and the computer
  becomes usable again.

  I experienced the problem today again. The current RAM usage is 7.2
  Gio / 15.6 Gio and swap usage is 4.2 Gio / 31.3 Gio.

  Main memory usage is :
  firefox 3.4 Gio
  firefox (other instance) 1.7 Gio
  thunderbird 624 Mio
  xfwm4 213 Mio

  Hibernation with TuxOnIce did not induce this problem (I am not using
  it currently due to mismanagement of video drivers).

Bug description:
  [impact]

  XStream through 1.4.9, when a certain denyTypes workaround is not used,
  mishandles attempts to create an instance of the primitive type 'void'
  during unmarshalling, leading to a remote application crash, as
  demonstrated by an xstream.fromXML("") call.

  [test case]

  install java jdk (e.g. openjdk-8-jdk) and libxstream-java on a xenial
  (or trusty) system.  Then create a file named TestCVE.java with this
  content:

  import com.thoughtworks.xstream.XStream;

  public class TestCVE {

   public static void main(String[] args) {
    XStream xstream = new XStream();
    xstream.fromXML("");
   }

  }

  then run this (from the same directory as the file) to compile it,
  noting to replace the version number if needed (1.4.8 is X version, if
  on trusty use 1.4.7):

  $ javac -cp /usr/share/java/xstream-1.4.8.jar:. TestCVE.java

  then test it (again correcting version if needed):

  $ java -cp /usr/share/java/xstream-1.4.8.jar:. TestCVE

  failure is a JVM segfault, e.g.:

  success is a normal java exception with backtrace, e.g.:

  cannot have an instance

  regressions could include failing to parse the stream, or otherwise
  cause exceptions or segfaults.

Bug description:
  I have a notebook and desktop running Ubuntu 16.10 with Unity... in both 
machines the gnome-calculator shows a transparent formula entry box.
  Installing the new version 2.23.4 solved the issue in the notebook but not in 
the desktop.

Calculator worked flawlessly in Advanced mode in 16.04 (and before).
Upgrade to 18.04 and this bug appeared (the bionic desktop visible in
the display window). Using the calculator produced overtyped characters
and weird gridding between the numbers displayed (see attached).
Switching from xim to ibus seems to have solved it.
