[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1839900] [NEW] Power button action not working

2019-08-12 Thread Douglas Silva
Public bug reported:

I've configured it so that the system would suspend after pressing the
power button. This does not happen.

How is it reproducible?
It started after updating from Ubuntu 18.04.2 to 18.04.3. New packages, new
kernel, new bug. On Ubuntu 19.04, this has been reproducible since its release.
This is also reproducible on other distributions with the GNOME desktop.

This is exclusive to the GNOME desktop. No other desktop I've tried has
issues with the power button action.

Ubuntu 18.04.3
Kernel 5.0.0-23-generic
GNOME 3.28.2

See attached logs. Near the end of it I attempted to make the system
suspend by repeatedly pressing the power button, as configured in GNOME
Settings > Power > When the power button is pressed.

** Affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Attachment added: "journalctl output"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1839900/+attachment/5282269/+files/journalctl.txt

** Package changed: systemd (Ubuntu) => gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)

Bug description:
I have observed the following on two different computers:

On both computers, running Ubuntu 18.04, I am able to install xrdp and
log in remotely using a third computer via Reminna or Windows RDP
  client without any problems.

If I do a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04.2 and install xrdp OR if I
update my working 18.04 installation by running

  sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-18.04
  xserver-xorg-hwe-18.04

then xrdp stops working. That is, when I login using an RDP client, I
am presented with the xrdp login screen, but when I select xorg and
try to login with my username and password, I see a blue screen for
  about a minute and then

  connecting to sesman ip 127.0.0.1
  sesman connect ok
sending login info to session manager, please wait...
  login successful for display 10
  started connecting
  connection problem, giving up
  some problem

The only difference between the working configuration and the broken
one is Ubuntu 18.04 vs 18.04.2 (OR HWE installed using the above
  command).

Out of the two computers I tried one has nvidia graphics and one has
intel on-board graphics. For the nvidia computer, I tried both nvidia
and nouveau drivers to no avail.

Not sure if this is a problem with xrdp or xorg.

Not sure how they built the first time around.

Here's my ppa's buildlog, for a source package with my patch commented out of
the series file.

  /usr/bin/X11/libreoffice: 163: exec: /usr/bin/X11/oosplash: not found

The problem is that I have "/usr/bin/X11" in my PATH before "/usr/bin".

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Trying to resize the sidebar in LibreOffice results in a shivering
resize bar (it oscillates approximately 5 pixels left and right),
disallows grabbing the handle with the mouse (the mouse cursor is
changed to resize) and makes the machine unresponsive.

CPU load goes up to 100%
Mouse and Unity Menu not operable (Keyboard input works partly)
No chance to terminate LO (as the window frame is grayed out and unresponsive)

Have to reboot machine in order to get it to work properly again.

Phenomenon is reproducable on Macbook Pro Retina 15"

Haven't tried on MBPR 13" yet but will do.

  libreoffice

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
This package disables the ability to write special characters in libreoffice.
Open libreoffice, write some special characters ěščřžýáíéé for example USING
combination of letters, like ˇe, ˇs,'a etc. for ě,š,á.
Then switch to another window, then back to libreoffice
all you can write now is e, s, a etc.

ěščřžýáíé has their own key in czech keyboard.
Other letters that do not have special keys in keyboard need to be activated
with ˇ or ' and the letter.

Special characters that has special buttons like ěščřžýáí works, but
those that need combination of keys do not work. (like ú etc.)

  Uninstallation of libreoffice-kde is workaround.

  font, bold, italic

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
Intermittently with the same or different document in LibreOffice
Calc, Writer, or Impress text is distorted. The attached file shows an
example of the bug that I had in Calc, where the bottom right is the
'normal' text. Three lines, with the bottom one in bold. Depending on
the zoom level, the text is distorted in appearance (bold, italic,
  and/or font).

-I don't have a clear way of reproducing it. The apps normally start out
perfectly fine. After a while this can happen, not always.
-It is not always that the 100% zoom level is ok. That can be distorted too.
-This never ever happens in any other program I use.

WORKAROUND: Use the AMD proprietary driver (fglrx).

  3. I'v been hit with the strange bug for some time in LibreOffice under
Ubuntu 14.04
Namely whenever I try to enter some string in LibreOffice Calc using
non-latin characters, cyrillic in my case, the entry renders just fine in the
cell, but it renders with a series of squares at the formula entry widget. The
same happens with the search entry widget (ctrl+f).

I'm hit by this bug when using both the default packages from the
official Ubuntu repository, the packages from the LibreOffice PPAs but
also packages that I've downloaded from the Libreoffice website.

The first strange thing I've notied is that those same deb packages
downloaded from the LibreOffice website work just fine under Ubuntu
  12.04.

Today I've done some testing (after removing the PPA packages so that
ubuntu-bug would allow me to report this bug), and noticed that if I
remove the libreoffice-gtk package, then I don't have this problem any
more, except for the non exsistent theming and really ugly looking of
  LO.

I conclude that the problem is not in the LibreoOffice itself but in
  some gtk library.

I'm sending screenshots of the bug. One is taken under Ubuntu 12.04
where everything works fine, the other under Ubuntu 14.04 where this
  bug appears.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1838151] Re: Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. Missing wide band speech support.

2019-08-12 Thread Michael
Just noticed this with my new Bluetooth headset. With the same headset,
the microphone and audio quality is a lot better when paired with an
Android device than when paired with my desktop (4.15.0-55-generic
Ubuntu 18.04.03 LTS).

Title:
Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. Missing
  wide band speech support.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Bluetooth HSP/HFP audio quality is poor on Ubuntu comparative to all
other major platforms (Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, Android, iOS).

Modern Bluetooth headsets (such as the Bose QC series headphones, many
others) are capable of using HFP 1.6 with mSBC 16kHz audio encoding.
As it currently stands, Ubuntu defaults to only supporting HSP
headsets using 8kHz CVSD, and is incapable of supporting HFP 1.6 at
  this time.

The ChromiumOS team recently tackled this issue -
  https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=843048

Their efforts may assist in bringing this to Ubuntu, however it
appears that there are quite a lot of differences considering they
have developed their own audio server solution etc.

The Bluetooth Telephony Working Group published the HFP 1.6 spec in
  May 2011 -
  https://www.bluetooth.org/docman/handlers/downloaddoc.ashx?doc_id=238193

Patches have been proposed in the past for this issue to the kernel
  and PulseAudio:

  PulseAudio: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/245272/
  Kernel: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-bluetooth/msg76982.html

It appears that the Chromium OS team applied the same kernel patch:

https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromiumos/third_party/kernel/+/77dd0cb94c1713a8a12f6e392955dfa64c430e54

Title:
Kodi package crash after the update of libdrm-amdgpu1

Status in mesa package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Greetings,

The last update of libdrm-amdgpu1 caused a bug on Kodi package, making
it to crash after loading any video or reproduce a black image.

  Version: 2.4.97-1ubuntu1~18.04.12019-07-03 15:07:54 UTC

libdrm (2.4.97-1ubuntu1~18.04.1) bionic; urgency=medium

* Backport to bionic for 18.04.3 HWE stack update. (LP: #1824111)

   -- Timo Aaltonen Wed, 10 Apr 2019 13:54:06
  +0300

  Kodi gives this error:

  #3 0x7f47676c60aa in ?? () from
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/radeonsi_dri.so
  #4 0x7f47676c5dd7 in ?? () from
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/radeonsi_dri.so

  Repeated several times

  #3 0x7f475ce2c5a6 in ?? () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-8.so.1
  #4 0x7f475ce2c425 in ?? () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-8.so.1

Team-Kodi stated these errors are in relation to 'Not supported GPU
drivers', when Kodi can't find these files.

I've found the cause, and a temporary solution:

This bug was caused after an update for the latest version of libdrm-
  amdgpu1 2.4.97-1ubuntu1~18.04.1

So I grabbed the previous version from
  https://mirror.transip.net/ubuntu/ubuntu/pool/main/libd/libdrm/

  installed libdrm-amdgpu1_2.4.95-1~18.04.1_amd64.deb

  and now Kodi returns.

I created a bug report, the problem affects multiple users.

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kodi/+bug/1836828

We have a PointRelease coming soon, would we have time to fix this package?

  Thank you for your assistance.

Searching for Libreoffice in a software centre which uses Appstream

depend on anything useful so the user does not end up with a useful

Bug description:
I recently noticed that there is a regression that was introduced
somewhere between LibreOffice 6.0.6.2 and 6.1.3.2, which I installed
as a snap (version number 90) on Ubuntu 18.04. Steps to reproduce:

  1) Write a paragraph in Old Hungarian (Unicode block U+10C80 to
  U+10CFF).

  2) Double-click anywhere in the text.

Double-clicking should select the whole word, and it works that way
for most scripts (Latin, Arabic, and even Gothic), but for some reason
for Old Hungarian, double-clicking only selects the individual
character under the cursor. In LibreOffice 6.0.6.2 selecting Old
Hungarian works as expected. For a sample paragraph in Old Hungarian,
  see the attached document.

oSoMoN: The instances have 60GB root volumes, and all but a couple
of gigabytes should be usable by the build
wgrant, thanks! was this increased in the last few years by any
chance? I'm asking because the libreoffice package was artificially separated
into two source packages because of a disk space limitation, and I'm wondering
whether we could get rid of this workaround now
60GB should be enough for that purpose
but I'd like to understand what the limitation was previously
oSoMoN: It's slowly increased over the years. The -l10n split was
back in the Xen days.
I really don't remember what things were set to back then
   Probably 40GB, but not sure
oSoMoN: Hmm, the split actually predates virtualised builders at
all, so there's really no way to tell unless you can find IRC logs from 12
years ago
wgrant, ack, in any case it looks like it's worth trying to
reconcile the two source packages now, there's a good chance it will work
   oSoMoN: Worth a try indeed
Until a few years ago builders weren't particularly clean, either.
cjwatson, so less disk space available due to leftovers?
Certainly in the pre-virtualised days you could very well end up
with piles of junk left around from old kernels, previous builds, etc.
And it wouldn't have been consistent across builders.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1839856] [NEW] Screen resolution on external monitor won't go above 2560 x 1080

2019-08-12 Thread Matt White
Public bug reported:

I have an external monitor capable of 3440 x 1440. I am using a Thinkpad
T480s. Up until about 2 weeks ago, I could set the resolution of the
monitor to 3440 x 1440 just fine. Now when I try, the screen goes black
and I have to revert to a lower resolution. The highest it will go now
is 2560 x 1080. Lower resolutions work fine as well.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1837821] Re: [HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-df0xxx, Realtek ALC285, Black Mic, Left] Recording problem

2019-08-12 Thread Jim
Looks like the same issue I'm having on Thinkpad X1 Carbon 7th Gen
running Ubuntu 19.04.

Debug output here:
http://alsa-project.org/db/?f=5c09dfb7b0fc0ff5ad32c0576893316f5613d3a1

As well as the Mic not being detected, and therefore not available for
use in any applications, there is an issue with the master audio volume
being either full-on or muted. individual mixer controls still work,
but the main volume control does nothing other than mute the audio.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1332847] Re: Switching from russian to chinese does not work

2019-08-12 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I understand completely what you write now, and won't argue with you.
After all I don't speak any language which requires an input method, so
my view wouldn't be worth much anyway.

As we already agreed on, it's the upstream maintainers you need to
convince. And to make it more complicated, it's not obvious that the
Chinese maintainers have the same view on this topic as the Japanese and
Korean ones.

Chinese is the simple case, I think. There would the "us" layout be
natural in most cases.

Not that easy with Japanese and Korean. Those languages have special
"jp" respective "kr" XKB layouts, which are close to "us", but not
quite. Instead they are designed to be used together with some input
method.

To get an idea of the complexity of this topic you may want to check out
the discussion at this issue:

reproduce them. At points I will get a browser that has all thumbnails
for bookmarks gone and passwords get really wonky. I also get the
browser to appear, but there is no dot in the bar with tagged apps. If
I press it a new window opens. Doing ALT-F2->r fixes it. (This might
be a different bug) Closing the browser and reopening it opens "saved"
tabs from a previous session just before the bug happens. I'm using
the restore tabs feature a lot. Thanks.

Newly added Google accounts don't work: The specified session has been

Existing accounts work fine, but if I add a new account using gnome-
control-center or gnome-calendar, then it doesn't work. Calendars
don't sync and Evolution can't retrieve mail/contacts, etc. In the
  journal there is:

  Aug 12 12:00:37 raleigh.home.orangesquash.org.uk gnome-calendar[8276]:
  source_credentials_required_cb: Failed to authenticate
'i...@orangesquash.org.uk': Error reading data from TLS socket: The
specified session has been invalidated for some reason.

  I think that's an error from glib-networking.

I tried on eoan only, so far (a clean system and my real one). As
first steps maybe we need to try disco, and maybe also downgrading
glib-networking. Or upgrading it: there is a new release waiting to be
  packaged.

Existing accounts work fine, but if I add a new account using gnome-
control-center or gnome-calendar, then it doesn't work. Calendars don't
sync and Evolution can't retrieve mail/contacts, etc. In the journal
there is:

Aug 12 12:00:37 raleigh.home.orangesquash.org.uk gnome-calendar[8276]:
source_credentials_required_cb: Failed to authenticate
'i...@orangesquash.org.uk': Error reading data from TLS socket: The
specified session has been invalidated for some reason.

I think that's an error from glib-networking.

I tried on eoan only, so far (a clean system and my real one). As first
steps maybe we need to try disco, and maybe also downgrading glib-
networking. Or upgrading it: there is a new release waiting to be
packaged.

3) What I expected to happen was the .tiff file I scanned via a HP 5610v

4) Instead, when I entered the desired command as per the GNU Ocrad
website:

http://www.gnu.org/software/ocrad/manual/ocrad_manual.html#Image-Format-

I got the following:

tifftopnm test-0002.tiff | ocrad

The only workaround is to delete image cache and
  then restart the browser.
