[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1946499] Re: installation of deb-packages with gdebi-gtk shows "dpkg: error: unable to read filedescriptor flags for : Bad file des

2021-10-14 Thread Norbert
Possible way to compile VTE version from Hirsute on Impish is the
following:

```
sudo sed -i "s/# deb-src/deb-src/g" /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get build-dep vte2.91
cd /tmp
apt-get source vte2.91
cd ~/Downloads
wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/v/vte2.91/vte2.91_0.62.3.orig.tar.gz
tar -xf vte2.91_0.62.3.orig.tar.gz
cd vte-0.62.3
wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/v/vte2.91/vte2.91_0.62.3-1ubuntu1.debian.tar.xz
tar -xf vte2.91_0.62.3-1ubuntu1.debian.tar.xz
rm vte2.91_0.62.3-1ubuntu1.debian.tar.xz
cp -v /tmp/vte2.91-0.64.2/src/vtetypebuiltins.{h,cc}.template src/
dpkg-buildpackage -uc -us -b
```

and then we can install this older VTE version on Impish as follows:

```
sudo apt-get install ../*vte*.deb
```

As the result it will work as expected with Gdebi! Success!

For local system it may be pinned using the following long command:

```
cat
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 881046] Re: Panning in a virtual monitor is not possible after upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10
Well there you go, if you just wait 10 years, you don't ever have to fix
anything.  Could have fixed it 5-6 years ago, but why bother, right?
  resolution 1024x768 (as I did before upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to
  Ubuntu 11.10), the WM bars on top and left side of the screen (in
  Unity) look like extending to the new area, but I cannot move the
  pointer to the new extra area and so I cannot pan. As far as I
  understood by reading around, this *could* be a bug in package "xorg-
  server" rather than in "xrandr" and *could* be related to the
  boundaries set for cursor position.
There is no string "Default Screen Section" in
The directory contains files: 10-amdgpu.conf
That was one of the first things I tried, but IIRC I still got the
"unable to read filedescriptor flags" error. Which is a bit weird,
considering that it works in a Debian environment.
Also that looks familiar.
Tried to compile package from debian bookworm as follows:
```
sudo sed -i "s/# deb-src/deb-src/g" /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get build-dep vte2.91

cd ~/Downloads
wget http://deb.debian.org/debian/pool/main/v/vte2.91/vte2.91_0.64.2.orig.tar.gz

tar -xf vte2.91_0.64.2-3.debian.tar.xz

rm debian/patches/build-Fix-build-on-non-linux-systems.patch
sed -i "/build-Fix-build-on-non-linux-systems.patch/d" debian/patches/series

dpkg-buildpackage -us -us -b
sudo apt-get install ../*.deb

Then when `gdebi-gtk file.deb` is executed, then terminal shows the
following

recently landing upstream and should make it to beta next

Title:
  VAAPI / HW-acceleration not working Snap-packaged Firefox

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  I just installed Ubuntu 21.10, which packages Firefox in snap in
  contrary to the old .deb package way.

  Now neither of my laptops (with snap packaged firefox and Ubuntu 21.10) can
play videos hardware accelerated using VAAPI anymore. This means my laptops get
hotter and use battery faster. It was working perfectly in Ubuntu 21.04.
  I can see that the about:config has stayed untouched since the upgrade, so I
have my doubts that this is related to an updated about:config.

  vainfo shows full support (nothing appears broken) and I am also able
  to play videos in VLC using hardware acceleration, VAAPI.

  The reason why I can see it is not using VAAPI is intel_gpu_top. In
  previous versions of Ubuntu with Firefox, I could monitor the video
  decoder when watching videos in Firefox. Before the upgrade it was
  always utilized. Now it only shows that the GPU is being used, so the
  video decoder is not in use.

  I can't see any switch in the Application/Firefox menu regarding

Title:
  No event menus when editing events in tab

Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  If you enable the "Edit events and tasks in a tab instead of in a
  dialog window" setting in the preferences, then there doesn't seem to
  be any way of accessing the event menus. This means that there's no
  way of setting the time zone of an event.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1945592] Re: Viewing PDF doesn't use full screen width

Yes, I had manually edited userContent.css quite a few years ago for a
formatting problem on a much older version of Thunderbird, and never got
round to removing my edits.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1945592] Re: Viewing PDF doesn't use full screen width

2021-10-14 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks, closing then. There might still be a bug though if
userContent.css got in a buggy state unless you manually edited it?
Anyway that's more of an upstream question and can be discussed on their
bugzilla if needed

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1940836] Re: Libreoffice Calc rendering very slow on GTK3

2021-10-14 Thread Jean-Pierre van Riel
Same issue for me using latest stable NVidia drivers on 20.04 with
latest 7.2 Libre office snap.

I've noticed that only Calc is affected. Impress and Writer are not
affected.

So there must be some calc specific graphics acceleration method causing
high CPU rendering load.

Unlike the orig bug report, what worked for me was removing the snap and
reverting to old deb `sudo apt install libreoffice` back to 6.4.7.2 non-
snap version. No rendering performance issues with the older deb
package.

https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/calc-and-writer-ver-7-0-are-extremely-
slow/58522/8 mentions trying this which I tried with the 7.2 snap
version:

SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen libreoffice

It seemed to work better but still somewhat slow and not nearly as
responsive as the 6.4 deb package.

Title:
  Libreoffice Calc rendering very slow on GTK3

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I'm on a MATE 20.04 machine, with Nvidia proprietary drivers (for
  reference, can't use Nouveau, since my machine doesn't boot with it).

  Libreoffice Calc renders slow. The delay is very noticeable, even when
  just typing characters.

  If I remove the GTK3 styling (`libreoffice-gtk3` package), then the
  rendering speed is fine (but of course, the program is unstyled, with
  some workflow consequences).

  I've tried to run on GTK2 (`libreoffice-gtk2` package installed), but
  I see Calc as unstyled, so it seems it's not actually running on GTK2.

  I've also tried to disable HW acceleration, but there is no
  improvement.

  I don't experience this slowness on any other program on my
  installation.

  I've noticed that when there's a delay, the Xorg process CPU
  occupation skyrockets (depending on how fast I type, it may go even to
  100% (single thread)).

  I've reproduced the same problem on all the LO versions, from the
  default (6.4.7) to the latest (7.2).

  The kernel version doesn't affect the problem as well (experienced on
  different 5.x versions).

  I've tried a packaged LO (from https://libreoffice.soluzioniopen.com),
  and it has the same behavior.

  I'd be perfectly happy to run on GTK2 as workaround, if that allowed
  persistent copy/paste :)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1946963] Re: libical3-dev does not provide CMake config files

Thank you for the bug report, the Debian maintainer removed those in

documenting the change. Could you perhaps report the bug to Debian
directly?

  See:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1941983] Re: gnome-shell crashes on display hotplug

2021-10-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1871262 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1871262

Your system log ends with:

[  327.514699] ozmodiar gnome-shell[3502]:
meta_window_set_stack_position_no_sync: assertion
'window->stack_position >= 0' failed

So yes I think bug 1871262 is appropriate even if the steps are
different. It gives the dozen or so affected people a central location
to discuss their findings.

Also the rarity of the crash provides no evidence that the original
cause was ever fixed. And indeed the issue is still open upstream:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1946987] Re: Nvidia 340 Xorg driver is installed but not loaded

2021-10-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Your XorgLog.txt mentions that it's getting the problematic settings
like these from a config file somewhere:

[ 7.396] (**) |-->Screen "Default Screen Section" (0)
[ 7.396] (**) |   |-->Monitor ""
...
[ 8.110] (**) FBDEV(1): claimed PCI slot 1@0:0:0

It also suggests to look in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d for the offending
file.

force pulseaudio sample rate to 44100 to be able to successfully play

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1947131] [NEW] HDMI display not recognized

2021-10-14 Thread Jarno Suni
Public bug reported:

$ xrandr | grep -i hdmi
HDMI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

This is even when the monitor is connected.

IIRC it has never worked with nouveau, but on the other hand nvidia-340
is unsupported nowadays by Nvidia.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1941983] Re: gnome-shell crashes on display hotplug

2021-10-14 Thread Brian Rogers
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1871262 ***

Are you sure about duplicate status? This is a new issue I'm
experiencing with 21.10, and the reproduction steps are different (I see
nothing in the other bug about display hotplug).

using "Software & Updates" rebooted, switched back to nvidia-340 by the

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1947115] [NEW] VAAPI / HW-acceleration not working Snap-packaged Firefox

2021-10-14 Thread Troels Petersen
Public bug reported:

I just installed Ubuntu 21.10, which packages Firefox in snap in
contrary to the old .deb package way.

Now neither of my laptops (with snap packaged firefox and Ubuntu 21.10) can
play videos hardware accelerated using VAAPI anymore. This means my laptops get
hotter and use battery faster. It was working perfectly in Ubuntu 21.04.
I can see that the about:config has stayed untouched since the upgrade, so I
have my doubts that this is related to an updated about:config.

vainfo shows full support (nothing appears broken) and I am also able to
play videos in VLC using hardware acceleration, VAAPI.

I can't see any switch in the Application/Firefox menu regarding
allowing access to video decoding hardware, so I am wondering if it
simply cannot access that part of the GPU inside a snap environment?

** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1947113] [NEW] [HP Notebook, ATI R6xx HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Audio L/R balance problem

Every time the PC turns on, the audio output from HDMI is not well

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1946970] Re: Memory leak in gnome-shell after lock and unlock the screen

2021-10-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Memory in gnome-shell does not get freed quickly because of JavaScript
garbage collection. Memory usage will tend to grow slowly and plateau.
Significant drops are rare, but I would not consider it a leak unless
you see growth continuing above 500MB. Starting at 200MB is normal.

If you are still concerned about the memory use then please also check
to see if you get the same behaviour with no extensions at all.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1946970] Re: Memory leak in gnome-shell after lock and unlock the screen

2021-10-14 Thread Balazs Pere
I switch off all the extensions except for Ubuntu ones. Every
lock/unlock action raises the memory usage by ~10MB until it reaches
~280MB. Super-A (app overview) raised further the usage.

After a while something happend (Not lock/unlock or Super-A) and now the
memory usage of gnome-shell is 302MB and is not changing.

What is the normal memory usage of gnome-shell? Is it normal (what I
have described) or it should stay at the beginning level?
