Title:
No force-feedback for Saitek Cyborg Evo Force

Status in joystick package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:

  What I expected to happen:
I plug in Saitek Cyborg Evo Force joystick, run ffmvforce or ffcfstress and
can adjust the force-feedback.

  What happenend instead:
  No force-feedback at all.
ffcfstress raises error "ERROR: device (or driver) has no constant force
feedback support [ffcfstress.c:194]" although the joystick has constant force
feedback support.

  --

  Hi,

The joystick is recognized by the OS and can read axis and button
information. However, no force-feedback can be apply e.g. via
`ffmvforce` (will not complain but does nothing) or `ffcfstress`
(complains, that hardware or driver do not support force-feedback).

  $ ffcfstress -d /dev/input/event8
ERROR: device (or driver) has no constant force feedback support
[ffcfstress.c:194]

I tried to patch the iforce kernel module myself based on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/792937 and
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/73006485/Linux-Force-Feedback-for-Saitek-Cyborg-Evo-Force%20%281%29.patch
. My kernel module is working and loaded, however, the patch didn't enable
force-feedback (probably I was missing something in the patch, since the linked
patch is outdated).
Since, I have absolutely no clue what else I could do, to get force-feedback
working, I post this here since in an ideal world this should work plug&play.

What can I do to enable force-feedback for my joystick using ubuntu?

  Thanks a lot!

I've built and installed this and verified that the test case now
reports "OK".

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1988785] Re: ssh tunneling geany crashes session, forcing logout

2022-09-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1988755] Re: High memory usage of gnome-shell

2022-09-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report.

If you have been taking screenshots then high memory usage may be
explained by bug 1973638.

If the problem is not caused by taking screenshots then please provide
evidence of the high memory usage by running:

  ps aux | grep gnome-shell > shellps.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

Finally, please also ensure there are no locally installed extensions by
running:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell
  rm -rf extensions

and then log in again.

2022-09-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please don't install xserver-xorg-video-intel because it is old and
buggy.

The latest (and only) driver is the one that ships with Ubuntu by
default.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1988786] [NEW] system does not boot after full-upgrade on kinetic

2022-09-05 Thread Athos Ribeiro
Public bug reported:

Hi,

After a full upgrade on a kinetic system, the system no longer boots
normally.

When I power the computer on, I get a prompt to decrypt my disk. I
insert the password, and am redirected to a screen saying a fschk is
running. It spend hours in that screen with apparently no activity.
Pressing ctrl+C does not help at that point.

Booting through recovery mode and then requesting to proceed to boot
works fine. A regular fschk also suceeds.

Here is what I could extract from my journal:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1176903] Re: Chromium browser window opens on startup even though I never configured this

Bug description:
When I start Xubuntu 13.04, a Chromium window opens after I log in to
my session. I have never configured Chromium to open a browser window
automatically. This happened even back with 12.10, before I upgraded
  the instance to 13.04.

Note that this is not the same as #1175601. With the other bug report,
the problem is two background instances of Chromium are running at the
same time. With this report, the problem is not the background
instances but that the browser window opens without me having
configured it to do so. What should happen is, by default, the
Chromium browser window does not open until I manually open it.

I also have a 13.04 Xubuntu instance that I built from scratch. It
also has chromium-browser installed, same version as on the machine
with this problem. Not only does it not show a Chromium background
process in the menu bar on the top right, running "ps xfwww" does not
show any evidence of a Chromium background process running, so I am
seeing inconsistent behaviors here. (Not sure if that informs this
bug; I'd be happy to open a different bug report if appropriate.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1131367] Re: chromium page search field selects the previous search string to clipboard

2022-09-05 Thread Nathan Teodosio
Also keep in mind there is a difference between the clipboard and
primary selections in the X Window System. Since you never mention
explicit clipboard copy actions (e.g. Ctrl+C), you may be talking about
primary.

For reference, https://specifications.freedesktop.org/clipboards-
spec/clipboards-latest.txt.

Title:
Chromium cannot open profile correctly after system crash

Status in Chromium Browser:
  Unknown
Status in chromium-browser package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After a system crash, Chromium opens two dialog boxes showing

"You profile could not be opened correctly"

It doesn't offer any further explanations, and doesn't try to fix it
by itself. I found out that I have to remove
  "~/.config/chromium/Default/{Web Data,History}". Then, I can use
Chromium normally. However, the data in those files is lost.

Instead, Chromium should write to those files in a way that the data
cannot be get corrupted in a crash. Until this is realised, Chromium
should at least offer to remove the corrupted files by itself.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1046679] Re: Unity webapps integration search path * does not exist

Title:
Unity webapps integration search path * does not exist

Status in chromium-browser package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
The 2 Unity Chromium extensions introduced in 12.10 don't work. When I
run Chromium from the terminal, I get the following messages relating
to the webapps extension. I expect sites such as Google News, Gmail,
or Google Calendar to offer Unity integration, but they don't, and
alt-menu integration for Google Docs doesn't work either.

** Message: The unity webapps integration script search path
/home/awm10/.local/share/unity-webapps/userscripts does not exist
** Message: The unity webapps integration script search path
/usr/local/share/unity-webapps/userscripts does not exist
** Message: The unity webapps integration script search path
/usr/share/unity-webapps/userscripts does not exist
** Message: Integration script count mismatch: some scripts are being ignored
** Message: Integration script count mismatch: some scripts are being ignored
** Message: Integration script count mismatch: some scripts are being ignored

I tried the following, but it didn't work:
  * Logging out and logging back in.
  * Restarting.
  * Google search for the error give 0 results.
  * Disabling all extensions but the Unity WebApps Chromium extension,
uninstalling the Unity WebApps Chromium extension, then installing it from the
local .crx.
  * Firefox webapps integration (whether or not Firefox is the default browser).
  * Running Chromium in the guest session to see if the extensions worked
there, but Chromium in the guest session has never worked for me (probably a
different bug).

The "Online Accounts" control panel section crashed when I first used
it, and for some reason it now displays the Empaty logo in the left
Unity menu when it is open, but I doubt this is related to the
integration search path not existing. I searched my whole filesystem
(/) for a file or folder named userscripts, but there are only 2
results, userscripts-up and userscripts-down, both of which are
  located in /usr/share/doc/ppp/examples.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1988665] Re: snap install of firefox is a bad idea on heterogeneous networks

2022-09-05 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Ok, I think I understand better the problem. Indeed the wrapper script
was written for a one-shot migration of existing profiles, not with this
use case of going back and forth between two different installations of
firefox in mind.

Could you maybe solve this by making ~/snap/firefox/common/.mozilla a bind
mount to ~/.mozilla ?
Symlinks won't work due to apparmor confinement, but bind mounts should work.

> I'd add that snap is woefully slow (both package managing and application
> start up)

How much slower is the snap? We've done quite some work in the last few
months to improve startup time (see https://ubuntu.com/blog/improving-
firefox-snap-performance-part-3 for details), and while we're aware
we're not yet on par with the deb, we've come much closer than before,
and we expect the current startup performance should be acceptable. If
it's not, we want to know about it, and we need it to be quantified.

Title:
snap install of firefox is a bad idea on heterogeneous networks

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
We run a network of linux computers mixing a variety of flavours of
ubuntu and other distros - for many reasons they can't all run the
same system and they can't all be updated simultaneously.

The switch for snap for firefox is a real PITA because the profile is
stored elsewhere. So we have people losing their profiles, people
ending up with unsynchronised profiles, and a whole lot of annoyance.
It looks like snapping a key component such as this hasn't really been
thought through beyond the single user / single computer point of
  view.

So the snap of firefox should be reverted back to deb (or an update
option with an easy alternative fix offered) and any further
conversions of packages to snaps should be consider the heterogeneous
network environment (with fixes) before proceeding.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1988665] Re: snap install of firefox is a bad idea on heterogeneous networks

2022-09-05 Thread SA
In this case, many computers running different linuxs and many users.
Tied together with NIS/NFS in a fairly ordinary way. Thus users see the
same firefox profile which ever machine they are using. Switching to
snap moves the profile, cache etc etc into the snap directory and
isolates the firefox from the default profile / cache etc etc.

In our experience simply updating the system for single, multiuser,
standalone or networked machines did not automatically pull over the
user's profile into the snap directory which required uninstalling
firefox, reinstalling it and "snap run firefox" to migrate. Once
migrated the profile in the snap and the profile for non-snap machines
are separated so as you move from machine to machine users see either
one or the other. It's also a pain as an admin to go around fixing this
on a per-user rather than per machine basis. I'd add that snap is
woefully slow (both package managing and application start up) and that
helper programme integration is, shall we say politely, clunky. I get
there might be some theoretical advantages to containerisation from some
angles but I don't see that the end user gets anything over the firefox
ppa.

Strikes me this should be a job for something like update-alternatives
and that if switching from the snap to apt-get was made this easy you'd
see a clear exodus from the snap - even in the single machine/single
user environment.

Title:
snap install of firefox is a bad idea on heterogeneous networks

Bug description:
  [Impact]
On the Dell AIO machines, there is no internal mic, after plugging a
headset, users expect the headset-mic or headphone-mic could be selected
automatically. But with the current rule, the headset-mic/headphone-mic will
not be selected automatically and even users manually select them, they will
not show up in the gnome sound setting, and users could not record sound by
headset-mic/headphone-mic.

  [Fix]
backport a patch from pulseaudio mergerequest, the patch is going to be
merged to pulseaudio 14.1. This patch could be backported to hirsute without
any change, but need to be changed if backport it to groovy and focal.

  [Test]
With the old pulseaudio (prior to 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.10), plugging in a
headset to the problematic Dell AIO machine will not automatically select
headset-mic/headphone-mic, and they also do not show up in Gnome sound
settings, leading to failure to record any sound.

With the new proposed package, on those Dell AIO, plug a headset, open
the gnome sound setting, the headset-mic is selected automatically,
use the headset-mic to record the sound, the sound could be recorded
and the sound quality is good.

  [Where problems could occur]
This patch could change the policy of audio device switching, it will not
affect all audio devices, but only the devices which has AVAIL_UNKNOWN
available status, that means it has possibility to introduce the regression on
headphone-mic ,headset-mic, internal mic and internal speaker's switching since
they all has AVAIL_UNKNOWN status. For example, after unpluging the headset,
the input device will not switch to internal mic automatically or after unplug
the headphone, the output device will not switch to internal speaker
automatically. But this possibility is very low, we have tested the patch on
many Dell and Lenovo machines, all worked well.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1988631] Re: Firefox snap update doesn't work and popup is very annoying

2022-09-05 Thread Olivier Tilloy
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1980271 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1980271

This UX problem is being discussed in many places. There is some
interesting information in e.g. https://askubuntu.com/questions/1412140.

snapd is not clever enough (yet) to automatically refresh the app when
it is closed. So you will need to do the following when you get such a
message, at your earliest convenience:

  1) Close all windows of firefox
  2) Run `sudo snap refresh firefox`

** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 1980271
Snap doesn't refresh automatically immediately after snap is quit when
update is pending

Firefox snap update doesn't work and popup is very annoying

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Each time snap thinks that firefox should be updated (-> so this
happens quite often) a popup message appears and stays above all other
windows all the time to remind me to close firefox. It also gives me a
couple of days that are granted to me to do that.

I can close this popup - but after a shot time it comes up again.

This popup is very annoying and distracts me from the work that I'm
  just doing.

Every day in the evening I shut down my computer completely, so firefox is
also closed. In the morning I start it up and firefox gets automatically
started again (as intended by me).
But it seems that snap is not capable to handle a shutdown and restart to do
its work. It just prefers to annoy me in multiple ways instead: it takes away
my authority over my system and my decision when I'm prepared to do an update
or not. It doesn't give me a choice to skip a specific version when I don't
want to use it. It tries to put me under pressure to do the update like a bad
sales agent (only ... days left).
All of this was perfectly solved when firefox was a normal APT package.

The system I'm running is Kubuntu, based on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS
Firefox is 104.0.1 - but it happend already with older versions of it as well

headless, it cannot detect monitor hotplug event from type-c port.

  [Fix]
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/1561

Based on "drm/i915 Intel GFX Driver, Hotplug" [1]:
"Finally, the userspace is responsible for triggering a modeset upon
receiving the hotplug uevent, disabling or enabling the crtc as needed."

  [Test]
Unplug type-c monitor from an Intel Tiger Lake desktop. Replug the monitor
back, monitor is blank.
With the fix applied, the system can detect monitor again.

  [Where problems could occur]
This fix disables CRTCs when there's no monitor, if driver has trouble
dealing with it, we may see something break.

  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Headset Mic plugged into Dell WD19TB dock stops working after suspend/resume.

  [Fix]
According to alia-lib's document, to make PCM properly leave suspended state,
we only use snd_pcm_resume() if hardware support PCM resume.
For hardware that doesn't support PCM resume, like snd-usb-audio on WD19TB
dock, we should use snd_pcm_prepare(), snd_pcm_drop() or snd_pcm_drain() to
make device leave suspended state. This patch defaults to use snd_pcm_drop() to
achieve the goal.

  [Test]
  1. See if microphone on snd-usb-audio works in gnome-control-center/cheese.
  2. Suspend/resume.
  3. See if microphone still works in those apps.
I can the issue is fixed after each suspend/resume cycle.

  [Regression Potential]
Low. This fix makes PCM suspend/resume more reliable. No functional change
intended. I also don't find any regression during some smoke test.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1988665] Re: snap install of firefox is a bad idea on heterogeneous networks

2022-09-05 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Thanks for the report.

Could you please provide more details on how your network is set up, so
we can understand how your use case could be better handled by the
firefox snap?

In the current version, a profile stored in ~/.mozilla/firefox is
imported into ~/snap/firefox/common/.mozilla/firefox when the snap is
run for the first time, so people shouldn't just be losing their
profiles, unless something isn't working as expected.

Title:
snap install of firefox is a bad idea on heterogeneous networks

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1988744] [NEW] [SRU] libreoffice 7.3.6 for jammy

2022-09-05 Thread Rico Tzschichholz
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 * LibreOffice 7.3.6 is in its sixth bugfix release of the 7.3 line:
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan/7.3#7.3.6_release

 * Version 7.3.5 is currently released in jammy. For a list of fixed bugs
compared to 7.3.5 see the list of bugs fixed in the release candidates of 7.3.6
(that's a total of ?? bugs):
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/7.3.6/RC1#List_of_fixed_bugs
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/7.3.6/RC2#List_of_fixed_bugs

 * Given the nature of the project, the complexity of the codebase and
the high level of quality assurance upstream, it is preferable to SRU a
minor release rather than cherry-pick selected bug fixes.

[Testing]

 * Upstream testing. Bugs fixed upstream typically include
unit/regression tests, and the release itself is extensively exercised
(both in an automated manner and manually).

  * A recent set of upstream's automated jenkins testing can be found here:
https://ci.libreoffice.org/job/gerrit_73/1900/

  * More information about the upstream QA testing can be found here:

* Regression tests
  https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Regression_Tests
* Feature tests
  https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Feature_Tests

 * Launchpad testing. The libreoffice packages include autopkgtests that were
run and verified as passing.

 * General smoke testing of all the applications in the office suite were
carried out by going through the manual testplan as documented by:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/libreoffice

[Regression Potential]

 * A minor release with a total of ?? bug fixes always carries the
potential for introducing regressions, even though it is a bugfix-only
release, meaning that no new features were added, and no existing
features were removed.

 * A combination of autopkgtests and careful smoke testing as described
above should provide reasonable confidence that no regressions sneaked
in.

  [Impact]
After we plugging a hdmi/dp monitor with audio capability, we could
select hdmi audio as output device in the g-c-c, but after we do
that, the profile combo list will show up in the g-c-c and this combo
list is empty, it should be stereo-hdmi by default according to 18.04

  [Fix]
Backport a fix from g-c-c upstream, after applying this patch, the
combo list update signals will be recevied after the pa finishes the
  changing active profile.

  [Test Case]
Plug the hdmi/dp monitor with audio capability, then choose hdmi audio
as active output device from g-c-c, we will find the profile combo list
has hdmi-steoreo as the default profile. This is same as 18.04.

  [Regression Risk]
It is possible to make the output and input device can't work after
applying this patch, that is because the active profile is not set as
our expected. But this possibility is very low, I tested this patch on
2 lenovo and 2 dell laptops, there is no regression.

Bug description:
This patchset was backported from mainline alsa-utils 1.2.3, and
groovy already integrated alsa-utils 1.2.3, there is no need to SRU
this patchset to groovy, so only for focal.

  [Impact]
We enabled 2 Dell soundwire audio machines, these machines depend on
ucm to make the audio work, and in the ucm, the _boot section defined
some amixers values for the 1st booting, these amixer values should
be set to audio driver at the 1st booting, otherwise the whole audio
  doesn't work.

  [Fix]
Backport some patches from mainline v1.2.3, these patches make the
alsactl support _boot section in the ucm, then the systemd will call
alsactl init after booting, the alsactl init will setting all amixers
defined in the _boot section of ucm.

  [Test Case]
On the Dell soundwire audio machines, After booting up, run 'amixer
contents | less' to check all amixer values defined in the _boot
section of ucm, all values read from driver are same as the ones in
the ucm, test speaker/microphone/headset, all work well.

  [Regression Risk]
This could introduce failure on runing 'alsactl init' for some machines,
then the amixers will not be initialized correctly, users will experience
all audio can't work like speaker doesn't output sound or microphone can't
record sound. But this regression possibility is very low, since We have
tested it both on soundwire machines and non-soundwire machines, all worked
well.

  == SRU Justification ==
  [Impact]
On P620, only single port can work on rear panel. For example, when the
Line-Out is plugged, the Mic won't work anymore.

  [Fix]
Use upstream version of UCM to handle port priority correctly, instead of
separate ports into different profiles.

  [Test]
Once the UCM is in place, all three ports of rear panel work correctly.

  [Where problems could occur]
UCM is not a static thing - it's actually interpreted differently at higher
level. So any change in userspace daemons other than PulseAudio may not like
the change and can interpret the UCM in another way.

  == Original Bug Report ==
After backporting following patches from PA and alsa-ucm-conf and then it
works.

  [Impact]
Users reported the audio and video is out of sync when entering suspend
during playback on bionic.

  [Fix]
The mainline pulseaudio already has the fix for this issue, and the fix is
already in the eoan, focal and groovy, but it is not in the bionic.

  [Test Case]
open a online video on the firefox, while it is playing, suspend the system,
wait for 30 seconds, resume the system, the audio and video is still on the
sync.

  [Potential Regression Risk]
Low, these 2 patches are already in the mainline pulseaudio, and already in
the eoan, focal and groovy.

Most of the change is in the suspend/unsuspend on alsa sink/source, the
potential regression risk is the playback/recording stops working after
machine suspend and resume or playback/recording has an obvious discontinuity
before suspend and after resume. I have done the test on a Lenovo and a Dell
machine, the playback/recording worked well after resuming.

On some I+N machines (inlcuding lenovo and dell machines), after
setting the graphic mode to perofermance mode, and open the gnome
sound seting, run suspend/resume test, the audio devices will
disappear from UI, instead a dummy audio shows on the UI, and from
then on, the audio can't work anymore.

  [Fix]
The root cause is after resuming, the pulseaudio try to recover the
PCM device, but at that moment, the devices nodes at /dev/snd/ are
not accessible yet sometimes, it will make snd_pcm_open fail and
the pulseaudio will calll unload_module to unload alsa audio card.
I cherrpicked a fix from upstream, the fix adds retry and pa_msleep(),
this will retry the snd_pcm_open() a couple of times if it fails.

  [Test Case]
Install the pulseaudio wit this fix, set the graphic mode to
performance mode, open the sound setting, then run suspend/resume 90
times, after test check the audio devices on the UI, the speaker,
digital mic are still on the UI, and they could work well.

  [Regression Risk]
Low, this SRU just add retry and pa_msleep(), if the snd_pcm_open()
doesn't fail, this patch will not introduce any change, if snd_pcm_open()
fails, it just retry a couple of times, so it will not introduce the
  regression in theory.

Basically the icons are referenced using absolute paths in snap
environment, while they should be readapted so that they depend on
  $SNAP location.

As we do with appindicators and libunity emblems.

  [ Impact ]

Icons sonuds and desktop files referenced by a snapped app using
notifications aren't exposed to the desktop in absolute paths

  [ Test case ]

Build the test snap (or install it from the attached files to this bug):
    git clone https://github.com/3v1n0/notify-send-test-snap
    snapcraft prime
    snap try prime

  To use the pre-built snap
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libnotify/+bug/1802483/comments/7)
    snap install --dangerous notify-send-test-snap_*.snap

Check that icons are shown when launching:
    notify-send-test-snap
    notify-send-test-snap.image-path
notify-send-test-snap.image-uri

Ensure that desktop entry is correctly sent, monitoring the dbus
  session:

   In a terminal:
     dbus-monitor --session --monitor
"interface='org.freedesktop.Notifications'"

   In the other:
     notify-send-test-snap.desktop-entry
     notify-send-test-snap.desktop-entry-explicit-id
     notify-send-test-snap.desktop-entry-explicit-file-name
     notify-send-test-snap.desktop-entry-explicit-path
     notify-send-test-snap.desktop-entry-explicit-uri
     notify-send-test-snap.desktop-entry-explicit-snapped-uri

  The
`desktop-entry` value sent to dbus should be either:
     - A `notify-send-test-snap_`-prefixed desktop ID
     - A .desktop file path (readable from both inside and outside the snap)
     - A .desktop file uri (readable from both inside and outside the snap)

  [ Regression potential ]

Normal applications that are run with a SNAP environment variable set,
might use wrong paths for files or desktop file

Title:
Left-over cursor visible on second screen

Status in GNOME Shell:
  Unknown
Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
This sounds like (Fix Released) #1724977, but seems to happen on extra
  screens.

When I move my mouse between screens, every once in a while a leftover
cursor remains on the screen I just left.

Moving to that screen again fixes.

It may be related to different scales of my two displays (100% vs.
  200%).

  What Could Go Wrong
  ---
RDP Sharing is a new feature for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS as part of GNOME 42.
(Previously only VNC Sharing was offered.)

RDP Sharing can be used for providing remote support so it's important
that this feature works well because it may be difficult for the
remote admin to fix issues in person.

gnome-remote-desktop is part of GNOME Core and falls under the GNOME
  Stable Release Update microrelease exception
