[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1736176]

2023-07-17 Thread Heiko-tietze-g
The key and the implementation actually work well but, as commented
before, some hardware abuses it for other purpose. So I suggest to block
the scroll lock handling with an expert option (tools > options >
advanced: UseScrollLock; on by default, of course). Tentative patch at
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/154528

Scroll lock does not work for kf5 and gtk4 but gen, gtk3 and qt6 on
Linux.

Bug description:
(Enhancement Request) Although Ubuntu Server on an ARM device (such a
Raspberry Pi) can benefit from the LibreOffice package via the
official repositories, there is no option to have it installed as a
snap package via snapd, as only the amd64 arch is currently supported.
This affects Ubuntu Core especially, as system installations heavily
  rely on snap packages.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2027671] Re: [SRU] libreoffice 7.5.5 for lunar

2023-07-17 Thread Rico Tzschichholz
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

   * LibreOffice 7.5.5 is in its fifth bugfix release of the 7.5 line:
   https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan/7.5#7.5.5_release

   * Version 7.5.4 is currently released in lunar. For a list of fixed bugs
compared to 7.5.4 see the list of bugs fixed in the release candidates of 7.5.5
(that's a total of 70 bugs):
   https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/7.5.5/RC1#List_of_fixed_bugs
   https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/7.5.5/RC2#List_of_fixed_bugs

   * Given the nature of the project, the complexity of the codebase and
the high level of quality assurance upstream, it is preferable to SRU a
minor release rather than cherry-pick selected bug fixes.

  [Testing]

   * Upstream testing. Bugs fixed upstream typically include
unit/regression tests, and the release itself is extensively exercised
(both in an automated manner and manually).

    * A recent set of upstream's automated jenkins testing can be found here:
  https://ci.libreoffice.org/job/gerrit_75/1589/

   * General smoke testing of all the applications in the office suite were
carried out by going through the manual testplan as documented by:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/libreoffice

  [Regression Potential]

   * A minor release with a total of 70 bug fixes always carries the
potential for introducing regressions, even though it is a bugfix-only
release, meaning that no new features were added, and no existing
  features were removed.

   * A combination of autopkgtests and careful smoke testing as described
above should provide reasonable confidence that no regressions sneaked

2023-07-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

Title:
  Drop Channels feature?

Status in totem package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Ubuntu's default video app, Totem, includes a Channels tab with 3 web video
providers:
  - Apple Movie Trailers
  - Euronews
  - Rai.tv

  Screenshot attached.

I recommend that we disable this feature because
  - These are somewhat obscure video sources

  - It can be unexpected to parents, school administrators, etc. for
this app to be able to view web content

  - Perhaps most importantly, none of these 3 sources seemed to work today in
my clean Ubuntu 23.04 install.
+ Apple Movie Trailers worked after I installed additional gstreamer plugins
which aren't installed by default.
+ Based on the errors shown in my terminal, it looks like Euronews either
changed their API or it's no longer available.

  - If these channels can be broken and we aren't getting bug reports,
are people actually even using this feature?

  Implementation
  --
This feature is enabled by some plugins shipped in totem's src/plugins . They
can be disabled by the meson build.

Also, totem depends on grilo-plugins-0.3-base which provides
supporting files. None of the plugins works if that dependency is
  removed.

We would then also need to patch Totem to no longer show the Channels
  page in the Totem app.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1956916] Re: Using certain xkb-options, e.g. Alt+Shift, for switching input sources not reflected by the input source indicator in a wayland session

2023-07-17 Thread artli
Okay, the solution suggested in this gitlab issue comment fixes it for
me: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
shell/-/issues/4511#note_1309852

The solution is to skip gnome-tweaks altogether and instead set a custom
shortcut using gsettings:
$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-input-source
"['Alt_L']"
$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-input-source-backward
"['Shift_L']"

Caveat: if you have more than two layouts, this works a bit weird:
Alt+Shift does cycle between the layouts normally but Shift+Alt just
cycles between the last two, so be careful with how you press it. I
tried variations of these commands where I switch the shortcuts around
or use the same one or leave one out but couldn't find anything that
doesn't behave weirdly; perhaps I haven't tried hard enough though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2028016] [NEW] Drop Channels feature?

2023-07-17 Thread Jeremy Bícha
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu's default video app, Totem, includes a Channels tab with 3 web video
providers:
- Apple Movie Trailers
- Euronews
- Rai.tv

Screenshot attached.

I recommend that we disable this feature because
- These are somewhat obscure video sources

- It can be unexpected to parents, school administrators, etc. for this
app to be able to view web content

- Perhaps most importantly, none of these 3 sources seemed to work today in my
clean Ubuntu 23.04 install.
+ Apple Movie Trailers worked after I installed additional gstreamer plugins
which aren't installed by default.
+ Based on the errors shown in my terminal, it looks like Euronews either
changed their API or it's no longer available.

- If these channels can be broken and we aren't getting bug reports, are
people actually even using this feature?

Implementation
--
This feature is enabled by some plugins shipped in totem's src/plugins . They
can be disabled by the meson build.

Also, totem depends on grilo-plugins-0.3-base which provides supporting
files. None of the plugins works if that dependency is removed.

We would then also need to patch Totem to no longer show the Channels
page in the Totem app.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2028005] [NEW] Update gtk4 to 4.6.9

2023-07-17 Thread Treviño
Public bug reported:

Impact
--
There is a new point release in the stable GTK 4.6 series.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/blob/4.6.9/NEWS

Test Case 1
---
Make sure that opening and saving files from the Firefox and Chromium snaps
still work

Test Case 2
---
snap install portal-test
snap run portal-test
Verify that the app seems to still work ok

Test Case 3
---
sudo apt install gnome-shell-extensions-prefs
gnome-shell-extensions-prefs

GNOME Shell extensions can be configured and managed, the program can
run without crashing both during runtime and shutdown.

What Could Go Wrong
---
Ubuntu includes xdg-desktop-portal-gnome by default which is used for many snap
actions like providing a file chooser. This is critical functionality for our
snaps.

The Ubuntu flavors use a different portal backend, most commonly xdg-
desktop-portal-gtk which uses GTK3 so it's not affected by this SRU.

The other gtk4 apps installed by default in Ubuntu are gnome-chess and
gnome-shell-extension-prefs.

gtk4 is part of core GNOME and is in my latest proposed update to the
microrelease exception
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/GNOME

https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/scope-of-gnome-mru/18041/42

gtk4 has extensive build tests and autopkgtests.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2027986] Re: gjs-console running Extensions Manager crashes with free(): invalid pointer

2023-07-17 Thread Treviño
As per further analysis it seems that this bug has always been there in
42 series, however the traces are normally caused by some extensions
settings, for example:

 - https://github.com/home-sweet-gnome/dash-to-panel/issues/1783

While something like this had already been fixed for some cases in GLib
(included in 1.72, part of gnome 42 and so jammy):
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gjs/-/issues/445

The has been found in gtk, though. And fixed by
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/merge_requests/5061

  [ Test case ]

  1. Add this script to a file (i.e. /tmp/test-gtk.js)

  import Gtk from 'gi://Gtk?version=4.0';
  const app = new Gtk.Application();
  app.connect('activate', () => {
  const scale = new Gtk.Scale({drawValue: true});
  scale.set_format_value_func(() => '');
  new Gtk.Window({application: app, child: scale}).present();
  });
  app.run([]);

  2. Run it via:

  gjs -m /tmp/test-gtk.js

  A new window should snow

  3. Close the window, it should exit normally with no errors.

  [ Regression potential ]

  None known, the fix
  (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/commit/8b76cc841) only ensures
that we're using the adjustment property if really was used.

I didn't manage to achieve sound even with boot CD, even with other
versions. I suspect a hardware issue. Anyway, that computer has been
dismissed for unrelated hardware issues, so the bug can be closed, now

In the past I had sound (crackling, but working). After some editing

  Edit (of 2016-02-25):
Package in question is installed. So what's the issue? Is it just a wrong
message I received from the system? (It was telling me that my system would be
corrupted and probably unusable ... I'm happy it is not the case ...)

  Edit (of 2016-02-26):
Because of some sound issues I applied following command to reinstall recent
kernel: sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-$(uname -r)
That fixed my sound problems so far.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1923363] Re: Users are not added to various groups (dialout, video, etc.)

2023-07-17 Thread Dave Jones
Per vorlon's comments on the merge request, I've closed the merge and
will re-submit an alternative method using udev rules instead of group
membership. Adding ubuntu-settings for the udev rules, and cloud-init as
we presumably want to remove membership in those groups from server
instances too.

Bug description:
We're attempting to make the GPIO system on the Raspberry Pi images
work "out of the box" on the new image. By default, GPIO kernel
devices are made available to members of the "dialout" group which the
initial user is added to by default on our server images. However,
we've noticed that this isn't the case on the desktop images.

The regression potential is minimal; the group already exists and
we're simply adding the freshly created user to a new group and not
removing any existing memberships. The group in question ("dialout")
is also rarely used these days except for providing access to serial
consoles, and as mentioned above is already a default membership on
the server images. The change has been tested on the desktop image
  successfully.

A test build of the updated image will be made under
  https://launchpad.net/~waveform/+archive/ubuntu/ubiquity and I'll
  attach a debdiff shortly.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1545310] Re: package linux-image-4.4.0-4-generic 4.4.0-4.19 failed to install/upgrade: run-parts: /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools exited with return code 2

2023-07-17 Thread Benjamin Drung
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The relevant dpkg terminal log says:

sed: can't read
/usr/share/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-gnome-text/ubuntu-gnome-text.plymouth: No
such file or directory
E: /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/plymouth failed with return 2.

So reassigning to plymouth since /usr/share/initramfs-
tools/hooks/plymouth is shipped by it.

** Package changed: initramfs-tools (Ubuntu) => plymouth (Ubuntu)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2027986] Re: /usr/bin/gjs-console:free(): invalid pointer

2023-07-17 Thread Treviño
This doesn't seems something easy to understand, because
`org.gnome.Shell.Extensions` could be loading *ANY* kind of javascript
code that is imported from gnome extensions.

Some of this code is definitely setting a wrong pango text, and gjs thus
doesn't free it properly.

It could be also an issue due to wrong JS-string -> C-string mapping in
gjs but it's very hard to reproduce for me.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2025538] Re: Unrequested kernel update

2023-07-17 Thread ETK
Hi,

on 23.04 again nvidia driver and kernel problems...
had the same issue back in march under 22.10 with funny flickering screens to
total black and back just after an update and therefore a totally unusable
system, and guess? no maintainer showed interest in that messed up situation,
so out of luck after several weeks and one upgrade to 23.04 with a persistent
problem (lmao seriously the problem survived the transition from 22.10 to
23.04) i had updated the nvidia driver to the "beta" 535 driver and had a
usable system... Now just 3 months later there it is again the same friggin
problem with flickering screens and unusable system... hope that this bug
request will result in some kind of patch with workable kernel and driver...
but i lost hope and go to check if there is some "new" "betastyle" nvidia
driver package greater than 535 in hope that i have again a usable system for
at least 3 months until the game starts again...

Seriously dear maintainers, take a deep breath, do a honest self
assessment and recognize your abilities and accept them, afterwards you
can implement then a rollback mechanism for updates in apt and snap so
that we users haven't to suffer any more and can at least roll one
update back to something more usable instead of hoping that you get that
stuff right before the sun freezes...

sorry but i'm really frustrated and disappointed with the overall
situation regarding the nvidia drivers...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The failing /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/plymouth
comes from plymouth. So re-assigning to plymouth.

2023-07-17 Thread Matthias Doerbecker
Hello Andreas,

I saw the same error on a 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1370PE using the
IOT release of jammy desktop.

I can confirm that installing mutter from jammy-proposed fixed the issue
on my system.

$ uname -a
Linux amr-rplp-01 5.15.0-1034-intel-iotg #39-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 22 20:56:05 UTC

~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS

Now I have this mutter release:

$ apt list -a mutter

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

gnome-shell/mutter 42.9 fails to start (black screen) on Intel Alder
Lake systems running older kernels such as 5.15.

  [ Test Plan ]

Try to log into gnome-shell. Verify there is a picture on the screen.

[ Where problems could occur ]

The offending code change relates to Intel-specific chip IDs so the
change is limited to Intel systems. Although affected Intel systems
worked perfectly before the change so we don't expect any problems in
reverting the change. In theory the worst case is limited to more
problems like that described in Impact above.

  [ Workarounds ]

  Add MUTTER_DEBUG_USE_KMS_MODIFIERS=0 to /etc/environment

or upgrade to a newer kernel:
  sudo apt install linux-generic-hwe-22.04

  [ Other Info ]

The log messages relating to this bug are:
iul 11 19:00:11 MY-PC gnome-shell[1040]: Failed to lock front buffer on
/dev/dri/card0: drmModeAddFB2WithModifiers failed: Invalid argument

/dev/dri/card0: drmModeAddFB2WithModifiers failed: Invalid argument
  ...

For kinetic: The bug never existed in mutter 43.0 (it was introduced
in 43.2) and was already fixed in the kernel anyway.

For lunar and later: The bug was already fixed in the kernel. You
would only ever encounter it in theory if you downgrade the kernel.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2026762] Re: gpu is not deceted

2023-07-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That error is irrelevant to this bug. It's also irrelevant to Ubuntu
since that's not a repository we support.

When you saw a change in behaviour it was probably just an update to the
'nvidia-prime' package which made 'prime-select' actually start checking
for an integrated GPU. But since your machine has no integrated GPU the
message "Error: no integrated GPU detected" is correct and not a bug.

Please use some other software to change profiles.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2026762] Re: gpu is not deceted

2023-07-17 Thread sai
before update i use to change profile from intel to nvidia.
after update it is not working at all it is saying nointegreated gpu detected.
and when i run sudo apt-get update i am seeing this issue

W: https://repositories.intel.com/graphics/ubuntu/dists/focal/InRelease: Key is
stored in legacy trusted.gpg keyring (/etc/apt/trusted.gpg), see the
DEPRECATION section in apt-key(8) for details.
W: Skipping acquire of configured file 'main/source/Sources' as repository
'https://repositories.intel.com/graphics/ubuntu focal InRelease' does not seem
to provide it (sources.list entry misspelt?)

If it still shows up in "snap changes" (which at this point is
unfortunately unlikely), please get the ID for the refresh and share the

Title:
  command-chain ... not found

Status in chromium-browser package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
(I'm not familiar with snap, was migrated to it by *buntu for
  chromium-browser)

Received the usual, well-know notification of having to snap refresh, some
time given ...
Closed chromium and issue the usual 'sudo snap refresh'. It went through,
without any error indication. Restarting chromium failed, on the command line
with

  $ chromium-browser
  Content snap command-chain for
/snap/chromium/2529/gnome-platform/command-chain/desktop-launch not found:
ensure slot is connected

Using Firefox, after some Google I found and tried
$ sudo apt install snap --reinstall
  ...
The following NEW packages will be installed:
snap

And, no, I did not uninstall it. This is my work laptop, and I do only
the basic and necessary system administration on it.

Hello! I am sorry for not answering earlier, but life got in the way. I
confirm that your assumptions about the setup that causes the problem
(Xorg + GTK apps) are correct; I have tested your ppa3 version, and the
bug I had is gone.

Many thanks for your help with this issue @gunnarhj !

Title:
Nautilus search is slow and jumbles keyboard input on 22.10

Status in ibus:
  New
Status in ibus package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Since my upgrade to 22.10, I've found the search box in Nautilus
(files) essentially unusable. It is notably sluggish to launch and
browse in general. But most detrimental to the usability is this:

The characters do not appear in real time as I type. When they do
appear, they are sometimes jumbled or in reverse (consistently
reproducible). As I type in the file search box, the circular cursor
spins intermittently, then the UI catches up and it's not what I
  typed.

For example, I just typed "umbrella" into the search box, and Nautilus
searched for:
  "umballer"

Off-the-cuff test #2, searched for "Ubuntu" and I ended up with
"Ubunut" ... you can't make this up. :-)

Test #3, typed Launchpad, ended up with a search for "Laudaphcn".

Keyboard input everywhere else on the system is otherwise normal and
  snappy. No pun intended, really.

FWIW Nautilus files preferences are as default (Search in subfolders,
Show thumbnails, File count == This computer only).

Status in xdg-desktop-portal package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in xdg-desktop-portal-gnome package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Run Firefox or Chromium as a Snap package in Ubuntu 22.04
  2. Have a SMB file server available where the network shares can be mounted
just by clicking on the share in Nautilus file manager (smb:// protocol,
usually mounted dynamically via `/var/run/user/.../gvfs/...`)
  3. Have one such share mounted and writable
  4. Open any website containing images in Firefox / Chromium
  5. Right-click on an image and select "Save Image As..."
  6. In the file save dialog, navigate to the mounted share
  7. Assert content of network share is visible and browsable from within the
save dialog
  8. Select "Save" at any folder in the network share

  Actual behavior:

  * File is not saved to selected network share location
  * No download entry is created
  * No error is shown

  Expected behavior:

  * File is saved to selected network share location
  * No error is shown

  Additional information:

  * When saving to a folder on the local machine instead, saving works
correctly as expected
  * In contrast to files, new folders that are created from within the save
dialog are saved correctly on the network share
  * Similar situation when trying to open a file with Ctrl + O on a network
share from Firefox / Chromium. After double-clicking e.g. an image file in the
file dialog, the file dialog closes but nothing happens otherwise. Opening an
image on a local folder works fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2027571] Re: gnome-extensions-app crash, parser_get_compose_table: assertion failed:

2023-07-17 Thread bob
Issue was due to .XCompose beeing too long (40K Lines).
[mirror for the
file](https://github.com/rvaiya/keyd/blob/master/data/keyd.compose)
(careful, `cat` does not display it fully, use `vim`)
GTK3 could handle it without issue.
GTK4 crash in the unexpected mannger described above.
