Title:
  xorg GPU freezing

Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Using ubuntu 10.10, intel i7 quad core, Radeon HD 3450.  Xorg freezes
  pretty regularly.  Keyboard and mouse completely stop responding.  The
  screen gets corrupted with weird color patterns (I'll attach a
  screenshot).

  Xorg uses 100% CPU.  Only a kill -9 will kill the process.

  I can't remember when it started.  First it would do it once a week or
  so.  Then it got gradually more frequent.  Now it does it several
  times a day.  I have noticed it to be more frequent when I'm using
  Wine or Crossover Wine, but this particular time I didn't have Wine
  open.  I was using Chrome, Remmina, Terminal, and File Browser.

  Most recently I disabled the desktop effects (I guess that disables
  compiz) thinking the problem would go away, but it hasn't.

  The only thing I can do with the system at this point is a hard power
  off.

  recently I noticed that the graphical performances of ubuntu have
  degraded in certain use cases.

  I play quite often with the game hedgewars and I never had troubles in 
running it full screen.

  nouveau: dark screen after suspend/resume

Bug description:
  Nouveau works fine with brightness controls working fine after initial
  boot, but I do S3 suspend, and then resume via power button, and
  brightness controls don't work at all, and backlight is on, but set at
  extremely low level.

  hardware is Quadro 770M on HP 8530w laptop

  /sys/.../brightness control does nothing when in this state,
  suspend resume cycles after this first cycle all have the same problem.

  I'll test if a full hibernate has the issue or not after this and
  report back.

Is is possible to keep this as a separate official PPA that just has

Bug description:
  The official Nvidia long-lived-branch stable driver is now 319.49.
  That means that the recommended official driver is 319.49 and should
  be used by all Nvidia users except those using old legacy devices.
  There are important fixes that are in this driver and the previous
  319.17 that affect Chromium browser users especially:

  + Fixed a memory leak that occurred when destroying a GLX window but
  not its associated X window.

  These can crash machines using Nvidia GPU's according to a Chromium-
  bug http://crbug.com/145600 NVIDIA linux drivers are unstable when
  using multiple Open GL contexts and with low memory.: and if check
  `about:gpu` you will see this is a major reason most if not all Nvidia
  GPU's are currently blacklisted.

  Also, when using Windows 7 I am liberty to install any driver version
  I want, keeping my machine up to date with the latest official Nvidia
  fixes.  With Ubuntu I'm stuck with older drivers that affect
  performance and contain old bugs that have already been fixed.  This
  leads to a lower quality experience than with Windows.  Drivers need
  to be kept current with upstream in my opinion.  For the time being I
  have been cherry-picking *.deb packages from X-Org-Edgers so that I
  can replicate that Windows experience and it's been working.  However,
  all Ubuntu users should have this experience as well and most do not
  know how to manually install packages using DPKG so it is out of their
  reach.

  The current Nvidia driver versions are as follows:

  Long Lived Branch version: 319.49 -- `nvidia-current` should be here as 
stable
  Short Lived Branch version: 325.15 -- `nvidia-updates` should be here as 
unstable

  This situation has to be solved, Ubuntu cannot be so far behind the
  curve that it cannot keep Nvidia drivers fresh and in sync with the
  upstream Nvidia release schedule...

Title:
  Screen resolution does not fall back to default resolution when
  suspended with external monitor

Bug description:
  My daily scenario:

  Plug my laptop to external monitor through HDMI port.
  Open Nvidia settings (dual monitor in ubuntu does not work recognize my 
external monitor) and set twinview, clone and turn of laptop screen to work 
only with external monitor at higher resolution.
  If laptop is suspended in this configuration (closing lid) and then resumed 
without the external monitor plugged the screen does not fall back to default 
configuration and tries to use the external monitor resolution.

  This behavior limits the functionality of a laptop in many situations
  (e.g. running late to a meeting). Falling back to default screen
  options would be the desired behavior. Not sure how this can be
  implemented if dual monitor does not detect my external screen and I
  have to use nvidia-settings every day.

+Timo, my tone was one of excitement and not really a rant, so I
apologize if I came off as sounding impatient and I can understand the
long hours everyone here puts into this and I really do appreciate this
and am very grateful.

However, I'm looking at this from a customer expectations point of
view and not a developer point of view.  This applies specifically to
sophisticated customers such as gamers, engineers/scientists/developers
and power-users who are the most likely candidates to migrate from
Windows to Ubuntu on the desktop.  From the customer point of view -
especially gamers and demanding power users - the driver release cadence
is still way too slow and is a valid bug.  Sophisticated users need to
flexibility to extract the maximum performance and ensure maximum
stability for their system especially for mission-critical applications.

Whether we like it or not the industry standard that every customer
expects is that set by Windows 7/8 and for those systems there are
always fresh drivers available within days of release.  Anything slower
is perceived as being sub-standard. It's not a matter of who's right or
who's wrong it's that we need to at least match or even better beat that
release cadence. Ideally a Linux distribution should find a way to be
ahead of a Windows release cadence.

  switch between laptop screen and external screen (a shame that there's
  no native way to do it, btw).

  The screenshot shows how the Launcher showed up after a switch (look

  did.

  Unity crashes after installing nvidia-current

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers-304” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  after installing nvidia-current, the window manager stops working.
  The taskbar disappears, windows will no longer move, resize or change
  order.

  What's particularly annoying about this error is that it has existed
  for years.  There are postings for Ubuntu 12, and I was able to find
  similar reports going back to 9.

  Various solutions have been proposed, including uninstalling the package:

  please open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and execute bellow commands with
  order (one at time, copy-paste from here if you want)

  package which, if installed, does serious damage to the desktop.  A

system.  At the moment I can barely use it.

According the the www.nvidia.com/driver selection tool, for Linux x64
drivers only series 319 and 325 support the Titan line of graphics cards
or are currently recommended to use with them:

and install the driver using 'dpkg -i this-driver.deb' and see if that
fixes the issue.  Make sure you remove the current driver before your
proceed.

Title:

Bug description:
  Default fresh 13.04 install does not offer the nvidia drivers and
  doesn't recognize my monitor: It thinks I am running a laptop and
  offers me only the choice of either 800x600 or 1024x768 (yuk)  4:3
  resolution when I have a 16:9 monitor.

  As soon as I install the nvidia drivers and reboot, bad things happen,
  I see a brief flash of purple then it hangs with a black screen.  I
  was lucky to be able to get to the grub prompt and select the CLI
  where I uninstalled everything nvidia and was able to at least get
  back to a 1024x768 GUI.

  I was previously running 12.10 with an ATI HD5790 card which I had to
  replace due to a bad fan.  It was previously able to detect this card
  and set my monitor to the correct resolution without any difficulty,
  and offered me the chance to install the closed source drivers.

Title:
  Screen resolution does not fall back to default resolution when

Bug description:
  My daily scenario:

  Plug my laptop to external monitor through HDMI port.
  Open Nvidia settings (dual monitor in ubuntu does not work recognize my 
external monitor) and set twinview, clone and turn of laptop screen to work 
only with external monitor at higher resolution.
  If laptop is suspended in this configuration (closing lid) and then resumed 
without the external monitor plugged the screen does not fall back to default 
configuration and tries to use the external monitor resolution.

  This behavior limits the functionality of a laptop in many situations
  (e.g. running late to a meeting). Falling back to default screen
  options would be the desired behavior. Not sure how this can be
  implemented if dual monitor does not detect my external screen and I
  have to use nvidia-settings every day.

  After successfully installing 13.04 on my Dell XPS 15z, I restarted
  the laptop, successfully booting into Ubuntu with no issues.

  Restarting after that then gives the 'System is running in low
  graphics mode' message.

  I can only boot in recovery mode

  UPDATE: In the ubuntu forums thread
  (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2115355), jbicha,
  recommended the following which fixed (or worked around) the problem

  Perhaps this is a problem with SNA which has been enabled by default
  for raring.

  Add (or edit if it already exists) /etc/X11/xorg.conf and I think this

Bug description:
  3 days ago after the most recent kernel update, my computer wouldn't
  start and got stuck on the screen reporting that it couldn't detect
  the hardware and start X. I reinstalled Ubuntu and the Xubuntu
  desktop, and somehow I am no longer getting that error, but now
  whenever I suspend and resume Xubuntu, the whole desktop is darkened
  as if there's a layer of semi-transparent black over everything. The
  mouse cursor is still completely white, so I know it's not a monitor
  brightness issue. If I suspend and resume again, it's twice as dark,
  as if there are now two semi-transparent black layers over the screen.
  When I restart or log out and back in again, it's back to normal until
  I suspend again. It doesn't happen every time I suspend--just most of
  the time.

  I have no idea what package this is actually a problem with. It may
  have something to do with XFCE. I tried killing and restarting
  metacity and that didn't help, and neither did killing the
  screensaver.

  brightness controls don't work at all, and backlight is on, but set at
  extremely low level.

  /sys/.../brightness control does nothing when in this state,
  suspend resume cycles after this first cycle all have the same problem.

  I'll test if a full hibernate has the issue or not after this and
  report back.

  When resuming from suspend (invoked by keyboard interrupt) screen
  remains partially dimmed (like a dark cloth over the screen) and only
  mouse cursor is displayed in correct colours. I'm using proprietary
  AMD drivers (fglrx) on ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200.

  This happens almost every second resume. The level of how much the
  screen is also not constant.

  This error disappear when the XScreenSaver option Fade to Black when
  Blanking is disabled. Also when the screen is partially dimmed, it is
  possible to restore it with change of gamma correction value in
  'amdcccle' Catalyst control centre.

Bug description:
  3 days ago after the most recent kernel update, my computer wouldn't
  start and got stuck on the screen reporting that it couldn't detect
  the hardware and start X. I reinstalled Ubuntu and the Xubuntu
  desktop, and somehow I am no longer getting that error, but now
  whenever I suspend and resume Xubuntu, the whole desktop is darkened
  as if there's a layer of semi-transparent black over everything. The
  mouse cursor is still completely white, so I know it's not a monitor
  brightness issue. If I suspend and resume again, it's twice as dark,
  as if there are now two semi-transparent black layers over the screen.
  When I restart or log out and back in again, it's back to normal until
  I suspend again. It doesn't happen every time I suspend--just most of
  the time.

  I have no idea what package this is actually a problem with. It may
  have something to do with XFCE. I tried killing and restarting
  metacity and that didn't help, and neither did killing the
  screensaver.

  - Configure your account to be automatically logged in on boot.

Bug description:
  3 days ago after the most recent kernel update, my computer wouldn't
  start and got stuck on the screen reporting that it couldn't detect
  the hardware and start X. I reinstalled Ubuntu and the Xubuntu
  desktop, and somehow I am no longer getting that error, but now
  whenever I suspend and resume Xubuntu, the whole desktop is darkened
  as if there's a layer of semi-transparent black over everything. The
  mouse cursor is still completely white, so I know it's not a monitor
  brightness issue. If I suspend and resume again, it's twice as dark,
  as if there are now two semi-transparent black layers over the screen.
  When I restart or log out and back in again, it's back to normal until
  I suspend again. It doesn't happen every time I suspend--just most of
  the time.

  I have no idea what package this is actually a problem with. It may
  have something to do with XFCE. I tried killing and restarting
  metacity and that didn't help, and neither did killing the
  screensaver.

Just added Xscreensaver to the list of possible candidates as per
commend #22.  Seems interesting because XFCE does indeed use
Xscreensaver and possibly the bugs on the duplicates list for older
Ubuntu versions prior to 12.04 are due to Xscreensaver being used by
default on Ubuntu systems then.  This would also possibly explain why
the bug affects so many different video drivers and card types.

Bug description:
  3 days ago after the most recent kernel update, my computer wouldn't
  start and got stuck on the screen reporting that it couldn't detect
  the hardware and start X. I reinstalled Ubuntu and the Xubuntu
  desktop, and somehow I am no longer getting that error, but now
  whenever I suspend and resume Xubuntu, the whole desktop is darkened
  as if there's a layer of semi-transparent black over everything. The
  mouse cursor is still completely white, so I know it's not a monitor
  brightness issue. If I suspend and resume again, it's twice as dark,
  as if there are now two semi-transparent black layers over the screen.
  When I restart or log out and back in again, it's back to normal until
  I suspend again. It doesn't happen every time I suspend--just most of
  the time.

  I have no idea what package this is actually a problem with. It may
  have something to do with XFCE. I tried killing and restarting
  metacity and that didn't help, and neither did killing the
  screensaver.

There was a slight gamma shift downwards and I'm attaching the log, it
tends to be more severe when the suspend is left to be triggered by
inactivity and the system is suspended for an extended period...

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

  I am having trouble after resuming from suspend to RAM on one of my
  laptops. This is on Lucid - it used to work perfectly on Jaunty.

  This bug, which is a spin-off from bug #510004, concerns the power
  manager: after resume from suspend it seems to think that the laptop
  is now running on battery power, so it dims the screen, even though
  the machine is still connected to the mains.

  This is reproducible on one of my laptop machines. On the second one,
  I have not observed this behavior.

  How to reproduce:
  0) Make sure you are logged in to Gnome.
  1) Make sure your computer is connected to the mains.
  2) Suspend to RAM.
  3) Resume.

  Expected behavior: The display should retain the same brightness level as 
before.
  Actual behavior:  The display is dimmed.

  I'm seeing random display corruption in gnome-shell widgets.  The
  exact appearance changes from login to login.  Very often, there's
  random gargabe shown in the spot of the volume indicator; the letter
  i is also often not drawn.  I'll attach a screenshot for the latter

Bug description:
  Nouveau works fine with brightness controls working fine after initial
  boot, but I do S3 suspend, and then resume via power button, and
  brightness controls don't work at all, and backlight is on, but set at
  extremely low level.

  hardware is Quadro 770M on HP 8530w laptop

  /sys/.../brightness control does nothing when in this state,
  suspend resume cycles after this first cycle all have the same problem.

  I'll test if a full hibernate has the issue or not after this and
  report back.

Very strange bug.  I don't get this at all using Unity and it's always
bright on that DM.  I followed Martins instructions and was unable to
reproduce the effect in XFCE 4.10.  However when I let the computer go
idle by itself and allowed the xfce4-power-manager turn the screen off I
noticed slight dimming.  I'm attaching the logs from pm-suspend.log and
pm-powersave.log because I couldn't find pm-utils.log in the logs
folder.

I've also scouted launchpad.net for similar bug reports and am finding
some that - on the surface - seem related but I will need to send a list
to Martin to confirm if these are in fact related.  Some of these relate
to the screen losing it's original user defined brightness level and
jumping to another while others include the back-light being non-
functional and the brightness controls not working...

Bug description:
  3 days ago after the most recent kernel update, my computer wouldn't
  start and got stuck on the screen reporting that it couldn't detect
  the hardware and start X. I reinstalled Ubuntu and the Xubuntu
  desktop, and somehow I am no longer getting that error, but now
  whenever I suspend and resume Xubuntu, the whole desktop is darkened
  as if there's a layer of semi-transparent black over everything. The
  mouse cursor is still completely white, so I know it's not a monitor
  brightness issue. If I suspend and resume again, it's twice as dark,
  as if there are now two semi-transparent black layers over the screen.
  When I restart or log out and back in again, it's back to normal until
  I suspend again. It doesn't happen every time I suspend--just most of
  the time.

  I have no idea what package this is actually a problem with. It may
  have something to do with XFCE. I tried killing and restarting
  metacity and that didn't help, and neither did killing the
  screensaver.
