Bug description:
Ok, this is a little hard to explain. Basically with two separate
programs (QtCreator and Eclipse) I followed (roughly, as far as I
  remember) the following proceedure:

  1. Install app *not from apt*.
  2. Create a custom .desktop file in ~/Desktop
  3. Launch the app using that file.
  4. Pin it to the dock.
  5. Close the program (or minimise - I can't quite remember).

Basically this leaves you in a state where the dock (and alt-tab, etc)
thinks the program is not running, but actually it is, and its window
is still hanging around. If you click the pinned launcher it starts
  another instance of the program.

Logging out and logging back in again fixes the problem, which
suggests there is something unity does on initialisation that it
should also do when you add launchers.

  To reproduce:

  2. Lens returns all songs from "...And Justice for All", including the title
track with the same name, AND one result that represents the album, all with
the same album art, but I can't tell which one is the song, and which one is
the album.

So we need some way to group them so it's obvious which ones are songs
and which are albums, perhaps instead of just returning "Music" we can
return 2 sections, "Songs" and "Albums" with the results in the right
category or whatever. Or display the artwork representing the album
  differently than tracks.

When the launcher API was reported people questioned why unity

launcher API was better. It's easier for developers use unity launcher
api within their own applications. As a dock developer I agreed and
welcomed unity launcher api, it sounded like a good idea and something
I would like to implement in my dock. When I started looking in to it
the disappointment hit me: libunity requires Unity to be running (or
more exactly it requires the unique d-bus address com.canonical.Unity
to be in use) otherwise it doesn't send out any signals over dbus. I
can hack my way around this by letting my dock register the
com.canonical.Unity address but that's not an ideal solution. What
will happen then if the user tries to start unity while my dock is
  running?

  b) Tap ALT key (HUD appears)
  c) Type e.g. "addons" - "Tools > Add-ons" appears as the first entry with a
noticable delay
  d) Press ENTER -> Long delay (several seconds) until addons tab appears

Same also for other menu items.
As using normal menus works really slick, the global menu is a productivity
slow-downer in this case.
Compared to Nautilus there the HUD has a fast reaction, also LibreOffice HUD
reaction is fast.
I found that Thunderbird has a similar delay as firefox although it seems

Hi! I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 x64 desktop edition and Unity
5.12-0ubuntu1. I don't know how to gather more information that you
might need but please just ask and tell me how to fetch it and I'll
  provide it.

I'm experiencing something odd on my desktop. When I press the super
key and have no windows open I can't open the dash. But if I have
either a window open or my cursor located on either the launcher or
the top-panel it works. This doesn't occur on my girlfriend's login,
  only mine.

What more information can I provide?

The special Thinkpad button, often called "ThinkVantage" button, used
to work fine for keyboard shortcuts in 12.04, as configured in the

In 14.04 it is possible to assign it to a shortcut in the keyboard
settings dialog, where it shows up as Launch1, but it doesn't work -

The key appears to get through to the desktop and apps, because if I
hit it while Emacs has focus it complains that nothing is assigned to

  was no problem)

After suspending and then resuming the system unity/compiz often but
not always becomes extremely slow to respond, so much so that you can
see the transistion from lockscreen to desktop for many minutes (if it
ever finishes). I will attach a picture of what it looks like. I
didn't wait around long enough to see if it would ever actually finish
  showing the desktop.

Is there any way to work around this issue? setsid unity has been
mentioned online as a workaround for unity/compiz problems but that
does not appear to work when run from the linux command line outside
  of X.

The system has never been able to run the nouveau driver due to it
crashing on resume under any desktop environment, which is the primary
reason its running the nvidia driver which has worked fine for the
past 5 years I've owned the system.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1304073] Re: 14.04 Unity pips (white dots in bar) are now too small.

2015-10-06 Thread Alex Baggott

and the bug is still there. I think this is a feature request rather
than a bug.

14.04 Unity pips (white dots in bar) are now too small.

Status in Unity:

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
On all 14.04 installs I've tinkered with so far they've all exhibited
this behavior. The pips (white dots) next to the icons in the Unity
bar are too small. I never noticed this before, so I went back to a
13.10 install to compare. The pips on 14.04 are so small that they,
quite frankly, feel useless. They need to be of adequate size in an
effort to be easily seen by the user, regardless of the actual icon
  size.

Take note of the size of the white pips on the Unity launcher in the
  following screenshots.

  https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mc4k4yyjm5nbbzk/4t6SgqVN8H

Here's an alternative 'direct download' link to the images just in
  case: http://skynetcore.org/shared/pips.tar.gz

In an effort to present an accurate comparison I included the following
screenshots
(note that 48 px on both 13.10 and 14.04 seem identical, it's just the
smaller sizes that down-scale too far)
  13.10 - 32 px
  14.04 - 32 px

  13.10 - 48 px
  14.04 - 48 px

I also included a 5th screenshot of 26 px in 14.04 in case it helps
  further show what I'm referencing.

While scaling the size of the pips makes sense to a certain degree,
the current behavior scales them far too small. I feel as though they
should have (at minimal) a 13.10 oriented type of scaling so they are
more easily viewable, and therefore, more useful. If they could be
adjusted in size, that would be a monumental bonus as well, but I have
a feeling that might be a stretch for the given time frame. :)

  Thank you for your time!

A few times now I have closed the software center while installing a
couple new toys. What happens is that it leaves the "waiting to
install" icon on the unity bar.. and re-opening software center to
finish the installs doesn't resolve the problem.

I think that if you are installing software, it should be indicated in
the dock / notification area.. with a tray icon to manage some basic
  options.

So the bug is "waiting to install" sits around until you reboot (I
think) and other icons from software that was installed after you
closed the software-center does not get a unity icon at all. It
  really messes up the flow...

  Ubuntu 13.10 64bit version.

Nedit is a text editor based on Motif and I have used it for many year
on various systems (Redhat *, OpenSuSe *, Ubuntu 9.10 ~13.10) and
  never have any problem.

However, after I ugraded my OS from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10, I noticed
some wierd things related with the Find/Replace dialog window of
Nedit. For example, if I press "ctrl+F" (shortcut for Finding string
in file.), the dialog appears normal. However, as I use the finding
function more and more, the dialog window appears in a smaller and
  smaller size.

So for me it seems something wrong in the current version of Unity and
  Mir.

You can find Nedit in Ubuntu's Software Center.

If you need any information, please let me know.

  Thank you.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 814032] Re: Alt-F2 no longer auto-completes (highlights suggestions)

2015-10-06 Thread Alex Baggott
As part of the big bug review for 16.04 LTS I have tested this on 15.10
and the bug is still there. I think this is a feature request rather
than a bug.

Results are displayed as soon as typing begins. Pressing Enter will run
the first result, so perhaps auto-completion isn't necessary?

Back in 10.10 and before, a simple Alt-F2 meant a *very* quick launch because
of suggestions auto-completed as soon as a unique name was found.
I think this needs marking as a reversion?

I expect the windows should scale and not repaint or resize when entering or

  Test case #1.
Start a virtualbox VM (with guest additions enabled so desktop resizing is
automatic)
  Maximise the virtualbox window.
Open a terminal in virtualbox and run the following command:-

  watch xrandr

This will show the current resolution (which on my 1080p desktop is
1855x1034) - attached max.png
Enter spread on the host with Super+W
Observe the guest repainting the desktop
Wait a second or two for xrandr to display the new resolution (which on my
machine goes to 1855x1006 - a reduction of 28px) - attached spread.png
Exit spread and observe the screen size goes back to what it was before.

  Test case #2
  Open a terminal
Enter the following command in the terminal
  watch -d -n 0.5 "tput cols && tput lines"
  Maximise the window
  Press Super+W
Observe the number of lines is reduced by one when switching to spread, and
increases back up again when leaving spread.

For the screen to get locked.

  What works:
  * Setting 'Lock screen' shortcut to Shift + Scroll Lock, Ctrl + Scroll Lock
etc.
  * Setting 'Lock screen' shortcut to, for example, the Pause/Break key (which
is right next to Scroll Lock on common keyboards).
  * Setting Scroll Lock as the 'Lock screen' shortcut in Unity 2D.

  Other notes:
Pressing Scroll Lock does nothing whether set as screen locking hotkey or
not, so it shouldn't be tied to some other function either.

As part of the big bug review for 16.04 LTS I have tested this on 15.10

than a bug.

Point 4 no longer seems relevant, since a context menu now appears.

Unity's application menu bar accessibility problems

Status in Unity:

Bug description:
  Description: Ubuntu 11.04
  Release: 11.04

I was ambiguous about using the bug tracker to report this issue. But
since it is really an problem that doesn't seem to have been addressed
yet and the post about it on Ubuntu Brainstorm predate 11.04's launch,
I've decided to report it as a bug.

In Unity the menu bar and title bar of applications are located at the
same place and the menu bar is shown only on mouse over.

Besides breaking some applications (I had problems with Gvim and
VirtualBox), this cause serious UX issues .

  1. Hiding window controls when the window is inactive and maximized
force the user to focus the window before being able to click one of
the three title bar buttons (close, maximize, toggle) or access the
application's menu bar. The problem is further annoying when working
extensively with multiple monitors. I am aware that this is a side
effect of the way Unity works with title bars/menu bars, but it is an
  accessibility issue nevertheless.

  2. The same holds true for window titles, the user have to focus a
maximized window to see it's title. Again, when working with multiple
monitors the problem is only more evident. A maximized window in a
inactive monitor has only a grey title bar that convey no information
about the maximized window. This problem could be more easily solved
than the first with more subtle rules for maximized window (ex: if
maximized and raised, always show the title bar).

  3. But above all, hiding the window menu bar cause a serious UX
problem. As I couldn’t put it better:

  > Mystery meat navigation (also known as MMN) is a disparaging term coined in
1998 by author and web designer Vincent Flanders to describe a visually
attractive but concurrently inefficient, confusing, or abstruse user interface,
usually one that is Internet-based[1]. Such interfaces lack a user-centered
design, emphasizing aesthetic appearance, white space, and the concealment of
relevant information over basic practicality and functionality.
  >
  > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystery_meat_navigation

  4. When the window is not maximized it's possible access a context
menu when right clicking its title bar. However this context menu is
not accessible when the window is maximized (nothing happens when the
pseudo task/menu bar is right clicked. This breaks user expectations.

My suggestion to solve issues 1, 2, 3and probably 4 is the following:
introduce an option to have the menu/title bar either merged (like it
is out of the box) or separated (old fashion).

And if you're kind enough, you could bind a keyboard shortcut to
  toggle between the two modes.

  Brainstorm thread: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/27346/

  Thanks.

  Maximise the virtualbox window.
Open a terminal in virtualbox and run the following command:-

  watch xrandr

Enter spread on the host with Super+W
Observe the guest repainting the desktop
Wait a second or two for xrandr to display the new resolution (which on my

Unity's interaction model design requires that any application which
provides a menu bar, have that menu bar "displayed" at all times, in
the top panel. For gnome-terminal, this breaks Alt-modifier

This is basically the same as bug 824890 but that is said to have been

With Active blur, the dash takes somewhat longer to appear and the

with Active blur it takes about a second. The fact that it is not
smooth gives it a much more slower feeling though.

With active blur, it takes three steps - it (1) dims everything right
of launcher, then (2) blurs it and then (3) dims the launcher. There
is always a delay between steps (1) and (2) and sometimes there is a
slight delay between (2) and (3). If I repeat the operation, the
second delay is sometimes absent. It seems it somehow caches something
so it is sometimes fast, but not always (and almost never in normal
usage as the cache does not stay long enough).

I hope my graphic card etc. got picked by ubuntu-bug.

Bug description:
From time to time (I don't know when, it seems to happen at random
intervals), Unity starts getting confused about Firefox's window
  state. Below are the symptoms:-

  1. Firefox, although maximized, no longer has its menu showing up when the
pointer is over the Unity panel. Likewise, its window title no longer appears
in the panel. When the Firefox window is focused and maximized, the panel is
blank where the window buttons and menu or title should be, whether or not the
pointer is hovering on the panel).
  2. The Firefox icon on the Unity launcher shows a filled triangle on the
right side, but an empty triangle on the left side, which seems to indicate
that Firefox's window is focused, although not on the current workspace.
  3. Alt+Tab orders Firefox's window to the back of the list
(alt_tab_bias_viewport = true).
  4. Alt+Grave over Firefox's icon causes Compiz to segfault (I should have
gotten a stack trace; I'll do that next time).
  5. Selecting Firefox's icon from Alt+Tab does nothing.
  6. Clicking Firefox's launcher in the sidebar does nothing.

And here's the weird part: Other application switchers in Compiz, e.g.
Ring switcher, and Scale, work as expected. Scale even properly
detects the workspace that Firefox is on, judging from the [N] suffix
to Firefox window's title. This indicates that the bug is probably not
in compiz, but in Unity or something it uses.

All of the above symptoms are for one issue. The symptoms either
appear all at once, or not at all. The only way to get rid of this
seems to be to restart Unity or the application in question (Firefox)

Bug description:
Since the last update to bamf (a week or two ago), opening a
libreoffice writer file will create a second icon on the launcher,
rather than associating the opened file with the icon that is pinned.
Opening additional documents will add new arrows to the second icon.

Restarting fixes the problem for a while, but then it will usually
come back later in the session.

One thing I've noticed is that usually lo docs first create the
generic white lo icon on the launcher, and then quickly snap to the
more specific icon where they belong. When the bug occurs, the white
icon never appears; the blue writer icon just shows up in the launcher
  and stays there.

Now I can still start the desired applications, but I have to do an

particularly annoying and unhandy for the calculator. I tested this
contra-productive behaviour on thunderbird and on gnome-calculator.

This bug seems to have occured about May 2014, and is active in 14.04

I consider this a very small bug, and so i hope this is really easy to

Unity is in a state where I don't get any results from the
applications lens. This sometimes happens for one search but either
re-entering the search or toggling the lens has always fixed it in the
past for me. This time neither of these steps work.

I'm attaching a bustle log of the problem in case that's helpful. I
searched for "spotify", which I've got installed, and got 0 results.

The only way to fix the issue is to log out and back in.

I tried this on Ubuntu 15.10 Beta 2. Compiz didn't use more than 85 MiB
under the conditions you describe.

This may not be a bug at all, but thought I'd report it anyway.

I am NOT reporting a memory leak - at least, I don't think so. I am
  simply reporting this:

When I start a desktop session, Compiz uses 85M of memory. It stays
there as long as I *do not open the Dash*.

Once I open the Dash - simply pushing the Ubuntu button, and then
closing immediately - the memory usage climbs to ~120-150.

If I go through every page in the Dash and open every sub-page and see
every icon available, the memory usage clibms to ~185M.

Re-visiting the Dash, no matter how often, doesn't cause a further
increase, but I'm not certain the Dash should use ~100M of RAM all by
itself. I'm not sure how much it *should* use, but it just seems a
  bit excessive.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1054782] Re: Introduce World Lens vs Home Lens

2015-10-01 Thread Alex Baggott
As part of the big bug review for 16.04 LTS, I have tested this on 15.10
and the bug is still there. I think this is a feature request rather
than a bug.

Introduce World Lens vs Home Lens

Bug description:
Previously the Home lens searched a "local" context on one's personal
computer. The shopping lens, and other lenses leverage online
searches to provide additional potentially relevant results, but in
cases where they integrate with the home lens they violate the
expectation of privacy established by the previous local search
context. They also violate the expectation of privacy that one
  associated with a "home".

This could be resolved by introducing the concept of a "world" lens in
addition to a home lens, and a switch to select which is the default
search performed in the Dash. The "world lens" would provide online
results, whereas the home lens would always perform local searches.

A UI mockup of this feature is provided in "How to Fix" > "Step 2" of
  https://perot.me/ubuntu-privacy-blunder-over-amazon-ads-continues

When testing In 15.10 Beta 2, connected USB drives that have been
unlocked from the launcher do not reappear when a CD is inserted. I did
not test this with network shared filesystems.

Bug description:
In Ubuntu 12.10 the default behavior when inserting a CD (or a USB
memory stick, etc.) is to add a list of mounted devices to the
launcher. This takes up a lot of extra space for me as I usually have
several Samba mounts. Furthermore, I don't need or want to see my CD
  in the launcher.

I can click right on the mounted devices and select "Unlock from
launcher", but the next time I insert a CD they're back. Disabling
this "feature" should be an option in 12.10. I believe it was an
option in 12.04 via CCSM. Thanks.

While using virtualbox in fullscreen mode, CTRL + ALT + L, leaves
focus with the virtual machine. However this still locks the host's
unity session. This leaves all key events trapped in the virtual
machine, so typing in your password becomes impossible. After a reboot
  all functionality returned.

This could be a potential security hazard, depending on the virtual
machine being used, as it allows arbitrary commands to be executed
through a locked unity session without any authentication.
