Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1726826] Re: screen 256 colour TERM setting breaks logging into older hosts
Hi Paul, Paul Gortmaker wrote: > So, something that used to work and now does not -- the boilerplate > definition of a regression, No, it's no regression in this case: Screen's behaviour hasn't changed at all. But it's long-standing behaviour relies a lot on which termcap definitions are available, and that depends on ncurses-term being installed or not on the remote (and partially also on the local) side as well as which termcap definitions are in ncurses-base and which are in ncurses-term. And that changes over time. See the README "that nobody reads". IMHO this is neither a regression nor an issue with screen's code nor can it be fixed without causing _real_ regressions, which I'd like to avoid. It might be an issue with the logic implemented in screen since many, many years if not decades. But I surely won't change such a long-standing behaviour as a distribution-only patch. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1726826] Re: screen 256 colour TERM setting breaks logging into older hosts
I do not want to add any further patches to Debian's screen package which makes it differ from upstream behaviour more than it already does. (Of course, it's a different thing if issues are caused by existing patches.) And IMHO workarounds for issues in other packages do not belong into shell startup files either. (Saying this with my Debian Zsh Team hat on.) Additionally, after the long and thorough discussion in the Debian bug report (and additional discussions on the ncurses-term topic on IRC), I'm convinced that there is no perfect solution. If you change something to make screen usable in scenario X, it will make people using screen in scenario Y unhappy and vice versa. Even moving definitions from ncurses-term to ncurses-base doesn't make things better by default: It may help to SSH from older systems with ncurses-term to newer systems with just ncurses-base installed. But it will also cause issues for people SSHing from newer systems with just ncurses-base installed to older systems with an older version of ncurses-base installed. (Not having ncurses-term at all and all definitions in ncurses-base might look like a solution, but then it will which definitions are in that package at which version...) So yes, IMHO the best thing we can do is document the issue. (And improvements for the documentation are always welcome. :-) If you really think a behavioural change is needed in screen, then please make according suggestions upstream and submit patches there. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1726826 Title: screen 256 colour TERM setting breaks logging into older hosts Status in gnome-terminal package in Ubuntu: New Status in screen package in Ubuntu: Fix Committed Status in screen package in Debian: Fix Released Bug description: As of 16.04, the screen program started using a 256 colour setting. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1276820] Re: unity and KDE mouse cursor disappear
I don't think that's an issue with unclutter. unclutter is only involved if the cursor vanishes after the mouse isn't moved for a few seconds or if a key is pressed. But according to the original report, the mouse cursor isn't seen at all (at least over some windows) and according to #23 installing unclutter again doesn't bring the issue back. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to unclutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1276820 Title: unity and KDE mouse cursor disappear Status in “unclutter” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: In unity and KDE I can't see my mouse pointer. I have read another bug and I have published some info there, but I think this is a new bug. I think is a compiz problem, because if I use metacity I don't have this problem with the desktop (only when I open steam and some other apps). In UNITY it seems that compiz is drawing over the mouse, because I can see the pointer when I move it inside the terminal or in firefox but I can't see it when I try to interact with unity (click on icons or top right corner stuff). The thing is that if I run sudo unity-tweak- tool --reset-unity, cursor reappear and I can use it normally, until I reboot. I have to run the comand with sudo, otherwise it doesn't work. The command give some errors I have posted in bug 1238410. I have tried switching off gnome's mouse plugin, but it doesn't work. In KDE I can't see the cursor anyway. I can't think where the problem may be. Perhaps I should run a sudo dpkg-reconfigure compiz or something like that? Unfortunately there are neither armel nor armhf images available on that page. But the device where this happened is an ARM-based netbook. Commenting just the later synclient call in my .xsession didn't help, so it seems unrelated to the used settings. Pressing the F9 button to enable/disable the touchpad showed no effect either. The very same configuration works fine on at least two Debian Sid netbooks (both ASUS EeePC, but different generations) and worked fine on the same hardware with Ubuntu Oneiric, so the source for this issue must be either the different hardware (Toshiba AC100, an ARM netbook) plus the newer package or some new difference between Ubuntu Precise (1.5.99.902-0ubuntu5) and Ubuntu Oneiric (1.4.1-1ubuntu2) or Debian Sid (1.5.99.902-1). Since all other touchpad stopped working bug reports claim that it happens more often with precise than with oneiric, I think this is another issue as it always worked with oneiric and never worked with precise in my case. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1255507] Re: Running unclutter without -noevent causes focus problems for Firefox and Thunderbird
Can you check if the problem still appears with unclutter 8-19? It's available from Saucy onwards. See http://packages.qa.debian.org/u/unclutter/news/20130502T003252Z.html (or https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unclutter/+bug/385034) for the changelog entry. According to http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=266118#17 the patch applied in 8-19 has a similar effect as -noevents except that it still works with some more window managers. With regards to -grab: That can causes similar problems, so I'm reluctant putting this in by default. BTW, the issues fixed in 8-19 don't affect all XULRunner applications as it e.g. doesn't affect conkeror (only available in Debian) while Firefox/Iceweasel does have known issues in combination with unclutter 8-18. But these issues are flickering as reported in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unclutter/+bug/385034 ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #266118 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=266118 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to unclutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1255507 Title: Running unclutter without -noevent causes focus problems for Firefox and Thunderbird Status in “unclutter” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: It seems that the default configuration for unclutter causes Firefox and Thunderbird (probably all XUL applications) to randomly lose focus. What happened instead: unclutter works as expected in many cases, e.g. when pointing at a web browser display window in Firefox. But it seems that in many GTK applications, pointing the cursor at a blank area of the app causes the cursor to flutter/blink/flash very quickly off and on after the specified -idle time. Not only does the cursor flutter, but Xorg begins to take up ~50% of CPU capacity on my 2.4 GHz P4 (according to xosview and top). Qt applications seem unaffected. Shaking the mouse causes the cursor to reappear normally and not flash, and CPU usage to go back to ~0%. But as soon as the idle period is over, the cursor begins to flash again. An example of an app. that consistently exhibits the flashing cursor behavior is Open Office word processor--point to a blank document window, or to an empty spot on the menubar, and the cursor begins flashing. However, I have seen this behavior in many other GTK apps, not just Open Office. I see that gcalctool (Applications-Accessories-Calculator), for example, also exhibits the behavior. gcalctool + unclutter causes 100% CPU usage (about 50% user and 50% system) between gcalctool, metacity, and Xorg, according to top and xosview. To see the behavior, point the cursor at a _blank_ area of the widget canvas; pointing it at one of the number keys, for example, does not show the behavior. Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1073894] [NEW] unclutter doesn't hide firefox pointer
Hi, drink wrote: drink wrote: The program 'unclutter' which hides the mouse pointer after timeout or when typing doesn't work in firefox. The pointer doesn't go away, even with the -visible option. Which Firefox version do you use? I am running Quantal, which has delivered 16.0.2 to me so far. Thanks! On a first glance I couldn't reproduce the issue with Quantals' Firefox tunneled via SSH. I'll check when I get a chance to sit locally at a Quantal box. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 538912] Re: xlinks shouldn't replace Firefox as /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser
JFTR: There are tons of other browers in Ubuntu which are even above the discussed 70 as used by Debian: * 0/usr/bin/google-chrome 200 auto mode 1/usr/bin/arora 90manual mode 2/usr/bin/epiphany-browser 85manual mode 3/usr/bin/firefox40manual mode 4/usr/bin/google-chrome 200 manual mode 5/usr/bin/konqueror 30manual mode 6/usr/bin/xlinks269manual mode Actually only Konqueror has a lower value than Firefox in the above example. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 877766] Re: lightdm login fails with NFS home and strict (mode 0700) permissions
Hi, Sebastien Bacher (seb128) wrote on 2011-10-25: Robert said he will look at it for the next SRU round Any ETA when this will happen? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to lightdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/877766 Title: lightdm login fails with NFS home and strict (mode 0700) permissions Status in Light Display Manager: Confirmed Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in “lightdm” source package in Oneiric: Triaged Bug description: Lightdm appears not to be able to log in a user if all of the following are true: 1. They've got an NFS-mounted home directory 2. NFS is configured in the usual manner; ie, root privileges do not allow access to arbitrary remote files 3. The user's home directory permissions are such that other cannot access the directory (ie, mode 0700) In this situation, the password is accepted and the screen clears. Rather than bringing up the desktop as expected, a couple of seconds pass and we're returned to the lightdm screen. This yielded a message in one of the /var/log/lightdm logs which I've just discovered was overwritten by subsequent successful logins. I'll recreate this and update the bug tonight. Workaround was to chmod the user's homedir to 0711 which allowed lightdm to work properly. Release is Ubuntu 11.10 with all updates as of 17 Oct 2011 at roughly 10pm EDT. Lightdm package is 1.0.1-0ubuntu6. Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 888662] Re: Web browsers should share the cache
Hi Fred, Fred wrote: Oh sorry, I just thought it was a really good idea. It actually is a good _idea_, just not a very realistic one. :-( Even all the Mozilla based browsers aren't sharing their caches despite the file format is the same. And it seems as if this wanted by Mozilla for some reason. Because I thought it was so dumb that all web browsers use cache and they all fetch the same stuff, but store it in different places. You basically just asked at the wrong place: No Linux distribution has the power to convince all the browser makers, especially Mozilla and Google (who both care a shit about distributions IMHO), to do such a thing. And it's the browser makers where this should start. Maybe the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) is a better place to dump/plant this wish/idea.
