[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1073103] Re: Unity panel not showing proper notifications count

This seems like an issue with Thunderbird and Empathy.

Bug description:
Since I installed 12.10, the unity panel is not showing notifications
count properly, e.g. unread conversations for empathy, new emails for
  thunderbird.

It works somehow - numbers are shown if the application sets it on
startup. In very rare occasions even later. However, it doesn't work
in the same way as it was in 12.04 - every time I get a new mail or a
new IM message, a number over icon is shown. Message indicator works
  as before.

Window controls should not come up on the panel when an application is
not maximized. This is intended behaviour according to the design spec.

controls should appear and the application name should disappear
completely when hovering over the panel in this state.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1039762] Re: freeze during Quantal install with USB non persistent key

2012-08-23 Thread Bilal Akhtar
There's a way to work around this. First, search for the pid of all
running X server instances using the command:

ps aux | grep /usr/bin/X

Choose the pid of the X process, and then:

sudo kill PID

where PID is the pid found on the first step.

Now, run sudo lightdm, and you get to a live session with Unity.

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Why does Ubuntu/Nautilus/Gnome not use the xdg-user-dirs info?

I have a separate /data partition where my personal info is stored, but I
allowed Ubuntu to set up its /home directory within / so that if/when I install
newer Ubuntu versions or other Linux distros, the app data specific to that
installation will not conflict with that of other distros/versions.
I have set up xdg-user-dirs to point at my /data partition directories for
documents, photos, etc.
However, when I select the Places menu, only the /home/scott installed
documents/photos/etc. directories show up.
I must select Computer, then when the window finally comes up (why is
everything so slow now?),
I can see my directories listed under the Computer heading, but the other
non-used directories are listed first, under Bookmarks.
While it is possible that once in a while, I might want to access the
configuration files or whatever that apps would store in /home/scott, having
the directories under /home/scott the only ones visible from the main Places
menu, and the ones given pride-of-place in the Nautilus side-bar seems not to
make much sense.

I also take issue with the fact that other partitions that I mounted from
/etc/fstab so that I could have easy access to them do not come up in either
the main Places menu or in the Nautilus side-bar, but are accessible only by
clicking on “File System”, and then on the individual directories in / that
fstab sets up.
  This includes my /data partition.
Not only that, but two partitions that have nothing in them, and are not
mentioned in fstab ARE available in the main Places menu AND in the Nautilus
side-bar (each as “17 GB File System”).

This same behavior is evident when one uses the “SaveAs” or
“Save-A-Copy” from Evince, Gedit, LibreOffice Writer, Eye-Of-Gnome,
etc. (In fact, I get the impression from the similarity in windows
that appear when the save request is made, that there is some
universal (Gnome?) requester that all(?) apps use/modify to save
data): my personal directories in /data are nowhere to be seen, the
/home directories elsewhere christened “Bookmarks” are there, and the
two unused partitions are there also.

Surely this behavior is nonsensical – stuff that should be easily accessible,
isn't; stuff that is shouldn't be accessible at all (for ordinary use), is...
The purpose of xdg-user-dirs is to REPLACE the original
photos/downloads/etc. locations, so one should expect to see the directories in
(in my case) /data/scott, in Places and Nautilus side-bar, and NOT see the
directories in /home/scott.

I am sure that somebody will tell me how to “fix” this issue, and I
will be happy to accept and implement such advice, but why was this
set up this way in the first place, and if incorrect, why has it not
  been fixed...?

I am using Ubuntu 11.10, and usually use Gnome Classic (Fallback Session?),
but the same thing seems to occur in Unity and Gnome-Shell (and I believe
Englightenment).
[I have since read that one can access a Places style menu in Unity by moving
the mouse up to the top bar, but I have not tested this out yet to see what it
shows - I suspect it will show the same info as for Classic Gnome's Places
menu...]

Title:
Unable to open a folder for 10 GB Filesystem, No application is
registered as handling this file... or Nautilus pops browser when
partition is mounted in bash script

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I first noticed this behaviour in Ubuntu 11.10. When I run my bash
script that mounts partitions on my hard drive (e.g /dev/sda5),
Nautilus pops up with a browser window. This is an illogical action,
since I've not 'inserted a drive', it's already there, and it's just
been manually mounted. This Nautilus action will interfere with the
scripts operation since, when the script tries to unmount the drive
(rapidly) it finds that Nautilus is still busy with it, producing it's
  browser window.

If I run chmod 700 on the mountpoint prior to mounting (root only
access), then I get a popup message stating: Unable to open a folder
for 10 GB Filesystem, No application is registered as handling this
file. This is because the mountpoint is not accessible to the logged
  in user.

You wouldn't expect this if you mount a partition from the terminal -
and for the most part this is correct (Nautilus does nothing), but not
all the time. I've managed to trigger Nautilus to pop just with a
  simple terminal mount.

I have a workaround in my bash script that creates a udev rule and
runs udevadm trigger to hide the partition, but this seems extreme. I
believe it's a bug in Unity(?) (maybe Nautilus?) in how it responds to
the signal that a partition has been mounted.

Please see this for complete details and discussion of possible
solutions (and the bash script code):
  http://askubuntu.com/questions/121569/prevent-nautilus-showing-
  partition-mounted-in-bash-script

I understand you can prevent Nautilus responding to inserted drives
etc., but this is definitely not the case here - the drive is already
there, just the partition is being mounted.

I tried this script across two systems. On Quantal, the disabled menu

A solution I have found, is to disable the primary monitor within
'Displays', set the launcher to show on the remaining monitor and then
re-enable the primary monitor. This causes the launcher to show only

This is normal, and expected. Since the icon is above the launcher, it
displays empty space instead of a horizontal line.

However, the designers might want to change that since it's somewhat
misleading in this case.

original location on launcher from where the icon is being dragged out. See
screenshot.
There should not be any new space created on the launcher for the icon unless
the icon is dragged back close to launcher?

Shouldn't the file come up in the Music lens AFTER it finishes playing?
Is that how it happens?

The notification comes up randomly in my case. Most of the time it
doesn't pop up, but on some random unmounts, it does.

Gvfs and Nautilus handle this part as far as I know.

Launcher loses installing in progress animation

Status in Unity:
  Triaged
Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
While the software center is currently installing an application a
launcher icon should also animate that progress.

This behavior was reverted because the launcher was not getting the
correct *.desktop file for its icon. This is because the application
needs to be installed first (that is the problem). This caused a
  bunch of problems.

The correct fix is to send 2 *.desktop files one for while the
application is getting installed and the second one for the correct
*.deskop file of that application. The software center should be
sending both of these paths to encapsulate those paths as much as
  possible.

So for a correct fix to this bug a fix in unity and the software
  center will be needed :)

Also for completely correct fix, this bug should be fixed as well:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1025011] Re: HUD search causes firefox to crash

2012-07-16 Thread Bilal Akhtar
This doesn't happen for me on Firefox 13.0.1, 64-bit 12.04. Since this
is a crash bug, there are two options:

1) Follow the steps at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs?action=showredirect=DebuggingFirefox#Crashes
to run Firefox under GDB and post the output log file as an attachment
here

2) Close this bug, and then use Apport to file a crash bug the next time this
happens. An Apport dialog should come up automatically right after the crash
which should assist you. Or you can just search for a .crash file for firefox
in /var/crash and then run this command
apport-bug /var/crash/NAME_OF_CRASH_FILE.crash
which will file a new bug with the required info.

Marking Incomplete for now, please take either one of the two actions.
Thanks!

  2. Type one or more words into the textbox.

  Expected result:

  1. HUD appears ready to search
  2. Results appear depending on the search term.

  What actually happens:

  1. HUD appears ready to search
  2. Results appear, however firefox crashes shortly after.

  == Additional information ==

Running firefox in safe mode makes HUD ignore firefox. In this
  situation Firefox doesn't crash.

Nautilus window opens and this window is given focus.
*-If another app's window has focus and I press Super+1, then a Nautilus
window opens on top of the other app's window BUT the Nautilus window is NOT

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) open an application that is not Nautilus (eg. Firefox)

  2) with the Firefox window focused, press Super+1 intending to open
Nautilus = observe how the Launcher icon for Nautilus shakes and the
Nautilus window appears on top of the Firefox window yet the Nautilus
window has NOT been given focus? Firefox still has the focus as
evidenced by the left-facing-arrow that shows in the Launcher (ie.,
the arrow is still pointing at Firefox even though the Nautilus window
is the top most window). The user must press Super+1 a second time to
  get the focus onto Nautilus.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1016854] Re: Desktop appearance changes after locking desktop for few minutes

2012-07-04 Thread Bilal Akhtar
Yeah, it definitely seems like a Unity crash.

In that case, do you have any .crash files for compiz in /var/crash? If
so, can you run the command

apport-bug /var/crash/NAME_OF_CRASH_FILE.crash

and file a new bug report for it? If that does work, then we can close
this bug since apport will file a new one with all relevant details.
Also, be sure to give us the bug number of the new bug if you file one.

Thanks!

/dev/sda5 is the boot partition, but used to be the root partition before.

/dev/sda6 is a luks partition, where I am using LVM for /home and /.

The odd thing is that the tooltip for the dock icon says 199 MB
Encrypted, although sda5 is not encrypted, of course.

I could imagine that this is caused by some previous user
configuration (since I used my previous home directory with existent
settings), but the icon shows up in a Guest Session, too.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 925014] Re: Purchased items are not being added to the Unity launcher

2012-06-05 Thread Bilal Akhtar
As decided between Gary and me, it's architecturally not possible to
send the icon flying to the launcher before installation, for two
reasons: 1) We don't have a desktop file to feed BAMF on, and 2) The
icon is not stored locally, but rather generated from the server.

It would be possible to fix it and still allow icons to be sent to the
launcher before installation, but that would mean basing the icon on a
different desktop file and modifying the icon/name to that of the app.
Also, SC would have to store the icon in /tmp or somewhere so that Unity
can read it. And, the icon's UpdateDesktopFile could be called to change
the desktop file on-the-fly to prevent any duplication issues in the
launcher.

Rather, we've decided on an alternative solution for a Precise SRU: Send
icons AFTER installation is complete. That would need a few one-line
changes on the Unity side, which are part of the linked branch which I'm
proposing for the next SRU. Meanwhile, Gary is working on the SC side
(thanks a lot for that!)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 992997] [NEW] Mic works, but not shown in sound settings

2012-05-01 Thread Bilal Akhtar
Public bug reported:

My laptop's internal mic is detected by PulseAudio, which can be
verified from pavucontrol. I can also set the volume of the mic from
pavucontrol.

But the mic doesn't appear in sound settings. The input tab is empty,
even though it used to show my mic until Precise RC, at least. The mic,
however, still works fine in all the apps I tried. But if I have to
modify the volume/mute the mic, I need to use pavucontrol, since system
settings doesn't work (see screenshot).

I'm sure the problem lies with control center or gnome-media, since the
mic shows up in pavucontrol. I'm running the Unity session, on Precise
with the latest updates.

The
mic, however, still works fine in all the apps I tried. But if I have
to modify the volume/mute the mic, I need to use pavucontrol, since
system settings doesn't work (see screenshot).

I'm sure the problem lies with control center or gnome-media, since
the mic shows up in pavucontrol. I'm running the Unity session, on
  Precise with the latest updates.

  What is expected:
The application icon is automatically removed from the launcher since the
installation has been cancelled.

  Proposed Solution:
Maybe the animation should start on confirm button's click of password prompt

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 886514] Re: Clicking on Inbox from messaging menu results in hebrew e-mail displayed as gibberish

2012-04-13 Thread Bilal Akhtar
How does this happen in Xubuntu? Doesn't it use its own indicator? That
very much means there's something wrong with TB.

Also, what happens when you open an e-mail from TB itself rather than
touching the indicator?

Bug description:
Since updating to 0.2.16, some applications such as virt-manager are
no longer using the global menu, but instead place menus in their own
  window.

  Steps to reproduce:

1- Make sure liboverlay-scrollbar-0.2-0=0.2.16-0ubuntu1 is installed
2- Run virt-manager, notice menus are in the application window
  3- Downgrade liboverlay-scrollbar-0.2-0 to version 0.2.15-0ubuntu1
4- Run virt-manager, notice it's now using global menus
