[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1067856] Re: "Open a new window" quicklist menu entries need internationalization
The translations in webapps-applications, as with most Ubuntu packages, are not shipped in the package itself, but in the language packs instead. In this case, the translations for libunity-webapps are shipped in /usr/share/locale-langpack/$LANGUAGECODE/LC_MESSAGES/unity_webapps.mo However, they are not loaded even though they are present. Looking at the code, the only thing that strikes me is: configure.ac:GETTEXT_PACKAGE=unity_webapps data/com.canonical.unity.webapps.gschema.xml: So it seems that the domain in the .gschema.xml file does not match the domain specified at build time. While this needs to be fixed, I believe it only affects translations of schema files, and I'm not sure it's related to translations not being loaded on the desktop file. Another thing that I've noticed is that the webapps desktop files are missing the "X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=unity_webapps" entry, which might be the root of the cause. However, I don't seem to be able to manually add the entry to the webapps .desktop files to test it, as every time they are loaded in the launcher, my manually written entry seems to disappear. Any ideas? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libunity-webapps in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1067856 Title: "Open a new window" quicklist menu entry translations are not loaded Status in WebApps: libunity: New Status in Ubuntu Translations: Triaged Status in “libunity-webapps” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: When shown in the Dash, each webapp icon has got a Unity quicklist with several entries, which are (pending an upload that will implement this) all localized. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1057767] Re: Translations are not in sync with Gnome
So after some investigation, I've found out that this is related to upstream sharing. - For evolution, the issue is that upstream uses a versioned template name (e.g. evolution-3.6.pot), whereas in Ubuntu, to benefit from message sharing across distro releases, we use an unversioned template name (i.e. evolution). This means that upstream sharing will not work for Evolution, as the two templates (upstream/downstream) need to have the same name. I've disabled upstream sharing for Evolution for now, so that translations are imported from packages as they used to do. - For Orca, the upstream template name was ac-package-name, which points to a bug in upstream sharing. I've now corrected it manually to orca, which means upstream translations should now be imported, but we'll see if the name stays when the next byr import happens. - For GTK+, the issue was that the template names (upstream/downstream) didn't match. I've now edited the upstream template name to match the Ubuntu one, so that sharing happens. - For evolution-data-server, the problem was that the upstream bzr import was still set to SVN. I've corrected it to be for git, but we're having the same issue as Evolution with versioned template names. ** Summary changed: - Translations are not in sync with Gnome + Some translation templates are not in sync with upstream ** Changed in: ubuntu-translations Importance: Low => Medium ** Changed in: evolution (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to evolution in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1057767 Title: Some translation templates are not in sync with upstream Status in Ubuntu Translations: Triaged Status in “evolution” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: French for instance is fully translated upstream and has 500+ strings remaining in Ubuntu http://l10n.gnome.org/vertimus/evolution/gnome-3-6/po/fr Wondering whether it might affect other GNOME packages and even other kind of packages. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1063170] Re: Not translatable string "Purchased from Ubuntu One" in Rhythmbox
After a chat with the Ubuntu One guys, here's the situation: - The name shown in Rhythmbox ("Purchased from Ubuntu One") comes from the name of the folder in the file system - Changing the name of the "Purchased from Ubuntu One" folder (i.e. making it translatable) might then break sync with systems with a different locale - Simply making the string translatable in Rhythmbox would mean modifying the Rhythmbox code to allow translatable names for monitored folders. ** Also affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1063170 Title: Not translatable string "Purchased from Ubuntu One" in Rhythmbox Status in Ubuntu Translations: Triaged Status in “rhythmbox” package in Ubuntu: New Status in “rhythmbox-ubuntuone” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Not translatable string "Purchased from Ubuntu One" in Rhythmbox left panel Music->Purchased from Ubuntu One To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-translations/+bug/1063170/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1057767] Re: Translations are not in sync with Gnome, leading to duplication of effort
Looking at it in more detail, it seems that there is not much we can do with Evolution, other than disabling upstream message sharing and going back to the traditional way of importing translations with package uploads. This is due to the upstream template name being versioned [1]. However, there might be a bug in the Orca import [2], which shows an invalid template name. Evolution is set to use bzr imports from the upstream GNOME branch. This way, the PO files are imported directly from bzr and shared with Ubuntu, which makes (in theory) new translations be imported daily. However, there seems to be something wrong with the upstream bzr import, as it's creating 3 versioned translatable templates, which means translations from the branch are not imported. For now, I've disabled upstream sharing for the evolution template, and translations should be imported using the traditional package upload mechanism. Other lenses have a 'Filter results' item, which would solve this if on the home screen. Otherwise, an option somewhere in the control centre (privacy?) would be good. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1022943] Re: localization
This was caused by bug 1048556 in Launchpad. [IMPACT] Users of non-English locales would see their Banshee interface in English rather than localized to their locale. This is a regression introduced in 2.4.1-3ubuntu1~precise1 due to the introduction of the "X-Ubuntu-Use-Langpack: yes" flag in debian/control. [TESTCASE] 1. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1053189] Re: UIFE: Rename "Print Settings" to "Printers"
Hi Jeremy, To be honest, I'm in two minds about this one. I think the change in itself makes sense, although at this point in the cycle I'd be leaning towards just leaving the string as it is. It's not the extra work, it's just the fact that some translation teams might not notice the change and end up with an untranslated string at release time without noticing. I'd give it a +0. That said, as there is already another translator that gave his +1, and unless someone else says the contrary, I guess that's a +1 as result :) Cheers, David. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to system-config-printer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1053189 Title: UIFE: Rename "Print Settings" to "Printers" Status in “system-config-printer” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Upstream, system-config-printer renamed their settings panel to "Print Settings". This looks pretty out of place in System Settings where no other panel has "Settings" in its name. This is a regression from 12.04. Screenshot attached. I'd like to rename this to "Printers" which is what GNOME calls their panel. We have talked the past two release cycles about using the GNOME panel by default; maybe next cycle that will happen. For consistency, it would be better to change the name earlier. If approved, I can upload the patched system-config-printer before Beta 2 Freeze. I will also ensure ubuntu-docs uses the new name in its docs before Beta 2 Freeze also. Public bug reported: I set up and published an exhibit for multiple packages yesterday, and had some fun this morning debugging why the exhibit was not visible on the client. That is: * 'lightread, fogger, picsaw' <- does not work * 'lightread, fogger, picsaw' <- does work In order to be a bit more robust, I think the server should strip the whitespace before publishing the JSON for the client to consume. Alternatively, the client could also do the stripping, so I'm adding a task for it too. ** Affects: developer-portal Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: software-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: software-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to software-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1043152 Title: Strip whitespace from the "Package name(s):" field in the exhibits editor Status in Developer registration portal: New Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I set up and published an exhibit for multiple packages yesterday, and had some fun this morning debugging why the exhibit was not visible on the client. Marking as invalid as per the findings on the upstream bug report: using the gettext C API (i.e. the locale module) vs the gettext Python API (i.e. the gettext module) makes things work. ** Changed in: gtk+3.0 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gtk+3.0 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1003298 Title: Cannot load translations from a locale dir other than the default Status in “gtk+3.0” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: (Filed upstream, adding it here to keep track of it in the distro and record the bugs that need fixing to improve the Ubuntu app developer experience) I've got an application that needs to be installed in /opt, and I've noticed that its translations are not loaded by GtkBuilder. It turns out that even if I specify the location to load them from (with gettext's bindtextdomain() function), GtkBuilder ignores that and tries to find them in '/usr/share/locale'. I've also tried to use the gtk-builder-set-translation-domain() function to explicitly set the domain for GtkBuilder, but that did not make any difference. I'd probably rather need a gtk-builder-bind-text-domain one, which does not exist. In any case, I don't quite follow why gtk-builder-set-translation- domain() is needed at all and GtkBuilder does not just pick the translation domain and the locale dir values from gettext. In short, GtkBuilder ignores any attempt to define a locale dir and just uses the default from the system. I'm attaching a Python example for testing purposes. To run the example: * Copy the build/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES/testglade.mo file to /tmp/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES * Run the app with LANGUAGE=ca ./testglade.py Notice that the message output on the command line is translated, whereas those from the UI are not. I'm also aware of this old PyGTK bug [2], but none of the tentative workarounds there work to make GtkBuilder load translations from another location than '/usr/share/locale'. Any help or comments would be appreciated, thanks! Could someone from the Simplified Chinese team or a Simplified Chinese speaker at OEM: * Test the language packs currently in the oneiric-proposed repository following the simple instructions below. Remember to add the language to the table. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/LanguagePackUpdatesQA Once that is done, we can release the language pack to oneiric-updates for all users, which will get this particular string and other translations done since the last language pack update. ** Also affects: ubuntu-translations Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to software-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/744914 Title: transliterate text/use collation before adding to xapian db and when searching Status in Ubuntu Translations: New Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “software-center” source package in Precise: Confirmed Bug description: Binary package hint: software-center As of now software center uses str.lower() when searching in the xapian db: utils/query.py 22:s = search_term.lower() 33:query = xapian.Query(str_to_prefix[search_prefix]+search_term.lower()) There are two problems with this: * many languages have diacritic marks for characters but for fast typing users usually write the base character: (in Romanian: ăâșțî and ĂÂȘȚÎ are spelled AASTI by some users). * characters in the Unicode set can appear in two forms: composed and decomposed: the character U+00C7 (LATIN CAPITAL LETTER C WITH CEDILLA) can also be expressed as the sequence U+0327 (COMBINING CEDILLA) U+0043 (LATIN CAPITAL LETTER C). To solve both problems both the text entered in the xapian db and the user's text query must be normalized. The search function in Chromium uses ICU rules to achieve this: - http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1100 - http://www.google.com/codesearch/p?hl=en#OAMlx_jo-ck/src/third_party/WebKit/Source/WebCore/editing/TextIterator.cpp&q=file:TextIterator.cpp&l=1882 There is a python-icu library that could help achieve this. See for example http://lists.osafoundation.org/pipermail/pyicu- dev/2010-October/000214.html Or one could just remove the diacritical marks from the string altogether: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/517923/what-is-the- best-way-to-remove-accents-in-a-python-unicode-string To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-translations/+bug/744914/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 876622] Re: Deja-Dup not fully translated into Simplified Chinese
Hi Kent, In general it is best to file missing translations bugs against the ubuntu-translations project in Launchpad. You can either file them directly against it [1] or open an additional bug task (click on the "Also affects project" link) in an existing bug. There it will be looked at and triaged by a community of volunteers knowledgeable in translations. I get notified for any bugs in the ubuntu-translations project, but if the bug is time-critical for an OEM project, feel free to ping me or Kyle Nitzsche additionally. Thanks! This way non-English-speaking users can see if the application is available in their local language when it contains a translated package description. Otherwise, translated package descriptions might mislead the user to believe the application is available in his/her local language. http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/27948/ See also bug 706571. Some use cases this would fix: a) non-english user clicks on a program name to see more info, sees the description in English and assumes the program is not translated and therefore doesn't install it, even though it might be translated into his native tongue. b) non-english user finds a program with a translated description, installs it only to find out the program itself is not translated and is therefore no use to him/her. c) user wants to install a music player in his native language. When searching for "music player" in the software center 10 hits appear but the user cannot filter the programs translated into his native tongue and therefore has to use trial and error. d) a one line description (po-app-install data) is translated, but description (ddtp-ubuntu) is not or vice versa. User is just confused.
