Title:
Cannot enable IM inside Qt5 apps including webapp-container

Status in Ubuntu Translations:
  New
Status in “im-config” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “im-config” source package in Trusty:
  In Progress
Status in “im-config” package in Debian:
  Fix Released

Bug description:

  SRU debdiff for trusty:
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/173673094/im-config_trusty-sru_v2.debdiff

  [Impact]

   * Cannot input languages which need IM(ibus, fcitx) in Qt5 apps, e.g.
  webapp-container, webbrowser-app, friends-app, etc.

  [Test Case]
   1. prepare ibus or fcitx environment with CJK(Chinese, Japanese, Korean)
language, for example.
   2. install and launch webbrowser-app
   3. confirm that you cannot enable IM inside webbrowser-app
   4. update im-config packages to -proposed one
   5. logout from desktop session and re-login
   6. confirm that now you can enable IM and input CJK language with ibus or
fcitx.

  [Regression Potential]

   * This patch sets QT_IM_MODULE which might affect Qt4 app behaviour,
both Qt5 and Qt4 app tests are preferred to make sure there is no
regression for both sides. I used webbrowser-app(Qt5) and skype(Qt4)
  before attaching the patch.

  [Other Info]
related discussion is debian bug report.
  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=732396

  -- original description --

  WORKAROUND:
launch webapp-container with QT_IM_MODULE variable like the line below.

  $ env QT_IM_MODULE=ibus webapp-container --app-id=Gmailmailgooglecom
  --webapp=XX --enable-back-forward --store-session-cookies

webapp-container looks like QT5 application, im-config needs to care
about QT_IM_MODULE in addition to other *_IM_MODULE variables?

Status in Unity Control Center:

Status in “unity-control-center” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
As defined in [1] the unity control center design panel should be
redesigned to use a 2-columns style that splits the general options
  and monitor options.

Also to give the ability to HiDPI users to define how to scale the interface
when multiple monitors are attached, we're adding a combo box that allows to
select the monitor scaling we should match, at global level.
Note that not to involve other changes in unity, we aren't introducing the
designed "Scale windows content" slider for 14.04.

You can see the results of this work at [2].

This will introduce 5 new strings:
   - "Scale for menu and title bars:"
   - "General options"
   - "Scale all window _contents to match:"
   - "Display with largest controls"
   - "Display with smallest controls"

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1223488] Re: language indicator is completely translated in Saucy in Russian but shows untranslated

2013-09-19 Thread David Planella
It seems that while the upstream package is set up for translations, the
source package at
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/+source/indicator-
keyboard isn't. This is due to the package not generating a .pot file
during build.

William,

- Could you look into getting the package to generate a .pot file as the rest
of the desktop packages? seb128 should be able to point out to how it's done.
- Could you set the export branch to the trunk branch in
https://translations.launchpad.net/indicator-keyboard/trunk/+translations-settings
 ?

Thanks!

Status in Ubuntu Translations:

Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
There are new translations for the Firefox desktop file that need to
be merged to trunk. In particular, the translations for the "New
Private Window" Quicklist entry, which are not yet in trunk and appear
  thus untranslated for all languages.

So this is a request to fetch the translations from the wiki and merge
them into the branch. They live at:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1170035] [NEW] Translations for LibreOffice QuickList entries are not loaded

2013-04-17 Thread David Planella
Public bug reported:

As a follow-up to bug 1068101, LibreOffice QuickList entries are now
translatable upstream, but the translations are not actually loaded.

Sweetshark mentions on IRC:

dpm: yes, it should work that way, maybe the translation stuff is
broken, it needed some ugly hacks on top of an ugly perl script to add the
unity entries to the desktop files.
dpm: yep. seems that perl script is broken.
dpm: the perl script is at sysui/desktop/share/translate.pl if
some volunteer wants to beat me to it, that would be highly welcome ;)
dpm: fwiw, there still is some UnityQuicklist specialcasing in there:

Hi Olivier,

While this is not related to the bug, it might be worth investigating it
as a separate one.

Would you mind filing a new bug, so that we can track it separately and
find out what needs fixing to get the right accelerators?

Thanks.

"Open a new window" quicklist menu entry translations are not loaded

Status in WebApps: libunity:
  Fix Released
Status in Ubuntu Translations:

Status in “libunity-webapps” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [Test Case]
  1) Login to the desktop using a language other than english
  2) launch the amazon app from the launcher
  3) after the page loads, right click on the amazon launcher and verify the
quick lists are not translated
  4) install the unity-webapps-service package from -proposed.
  5) logout and log back in.
  6) launch the amazon app again
  7) after the page loads, right click on the amazon launcher and verify the
quick lists are translated

  [Regression potential]
None; previous version simply wasn't binding to the GETTEXT_DOMAIN, this
fixes that.

  [Impact]
When shown in the Dash, each webapp icon has got a Unity quicklist with
several entries, which are (pending an upload that will implement this) all
localized.

However, there is one particular quicklist menu entry for all webapps
whose translations are not loaded, and thus always appear in English:
"Open a new window". See the attached screenshot.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1067856] Re: "Open a new window" quicklist menu entries need internationalization

2012-10-19 Thread David Planella
The translations in webapps-applications, as with most Ubuntu packages,
are not shipped in the package itself, but in the language packs
instead. In this case, the translations for libunity-webapps are shipped
in /usr/share/locale-langpack/$LANGUAGECODE/LC_MESSAGES/unity_webapps.mo

However, they are not loaded even though they are present.

Looking at the code, the only thing that strikes me is:

configure.ac:GETTEXT_PACKAGE=unity_webapps
data/com.canonical.unity.webapps.gschema.xml:

So it seems that the domain in the .gschema.xml file does not match the
domain specified at build time. While this needs to be fixed, I believe
it only affects translations of schema files, and I'm not sure it's
related to translations not being loaded on the desktop file.

Another thing that I've noticed is that the webapps desktop files are
missing the "X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=unity_webapps" entry, which might
be the root of the cause.

However, I don't seem to be able to manually add the entry to the
webapps .desktop files to test it, as every time they are loaded in the
launcher, my manually written entry seems to disappear. Any ideas?

  - rename the .application in .application.in

[1]
  - add a tag containing the upstream domain
  - then, at build time:

  1. Running intltool-extract files.applications.in so that it gets
merged into a files.applications.in.h file. If you are using intltool

happening already and you can skip to step 2.

  2. Including the .in file somewhere in the build system (like
po/POTFILES.in for Python apps and Makefiles.am for C/vala apps) so
that it's merged into the .pot file. In Python, it's just a matter of
adding it as an extra line to the po/POTFILES.in file (example [2]):

  [type: gettext/xml]data/gwibber.application.in

  3. And running intltool-merge --no-translations -x -u foo.applications.in
foo.application to create the xml upstream file which is shipped
  - online-account (the g-c-c plugin) should be patched to load them, looking

Libreoffice Quicklist menu entries need internationalization

Bug description:
Libreoffice launcher icons have got a "New document", "New
spreadsheet", etc. entry added to their Unity quicklists.

This particular entry is not internationalized and appears always in
  English (see attached screenshot).

I can think of two ways of solving this:

  1. Marking the strings for translation and providing a .pot file as
part of the libreoffice package build, that can be imported into
Launchpad for translators to do their work. Translations can then be
shipped in the regular language packs.

  2. Do a call for translations each cycle, similar to what we do
already for the Firefox and Thunderbird desktop files, and manually
put the received translations in the libreoffice desktop files.

I'd suggest 1., as it's the most automated way and allows us to update
translations independently from the libreoffice package.

Libreoffice Quicklist menu entries need internationalization

Status in Ubuntu Translations:
  New
Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  New

They should now be imported with every upload of the Evolution package.
The last upload was on the 28th September for 3.6.0 [1], and I imagine
there will be another upload when 3.6.1 is released.

Feel free to upload translations manually if you don't want to wait for
the next upload. In any case, translations will be included in the first
post-release language pack.

Cheers,
David.

Despite our best effort to educate about duplication and upstream
contribution, people are redoing the work on LP, so a proper and frequent sync

There's no Russian localization in 2.4.1-3ubuntu1~precise1...
  No changes in interface, though.
Must be easy to solve, I think.
Had to lock version 2.4.1-3ubuntu1~hyper1+precise with Synaptic, it's okay.

  [IMPACT]
Users of non-English locales would see their Banshee interface in English
rather than localized to their locale.

This is a regression introduced in 2.4.1-3ubuntu1~precise1 due to the
introduction of the "X-Ubuntu-Use-Langpack: yes" flag in
  debian/control.

  [TESTCASE]
  1. Switch to a non-English locale that was previously supported by Banshee,
e.g. German or Russian.
  2. Start Banshee
  3. Observe the language of the interface

  [REGRESSION POTENTIAL]
Unlikely. This change merely reintroduces the .mo files that were stripped by
pkgbinarymangler.

It'd be great if it could create the .pot file as the rest of the

  Binary package hint: language-selector

LanguageSelector/macros.py explicitly sets the charmap part of locale
strings to "utf8" - it should be set to "UTF-8" instead. This is
relevant because not all systems alias locale names with the former to
the latter, and compatibility with those systems is broken.

Rationale for this change is that the 'locales' package uses the uppercase
hyphenated format everywhere, even going as far as replacing '.utf8' with it in
one case:
  % dpkg -L locales | xargs grep '\.utf8'
  /usr/sbin/locale-gen:elif [ $IS_LANG = no ] && L=`grep
"^${1/%.utf8/.UTF-8} " /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED`; then

Hi. I realized that the "Examples" icon on the desktop when running
live-CD depended on having the translations inside package when the
language packs haven't yet been installed. example-content 38 removed
the few PO files that were included. Since the "Install Ubuntu 9.10"
above it is correctly translated, it would be a little more coherent
to have also Examples translated (although eg. the menus anyway are
  not translated).

The solution for this would be to export all translations from
  https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/example-
content/+pots/example-content and include them into source package.
The translations are less than kilobyte each. This exception is done
also eg. for xdg-user-dirs, the ubiquity icon etc.

Actually, NetworkManager translations come from Freedesktop.org, and it
seems that upstream translations are not complete:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/tree/

So the importer works fine for this particular one.

David.

I don't see Mathieu listed as an upstream translator on
http://l10n.gnome.org/teams/fr/

Are these not simply suggestions he did on Launchpad?

It might also be that he got assigned to him during an upload where
there wasn't any Last-Translator set on the PO file. Are all these
strings translated upstream?

Pierre, could you look into the questions above? They should help us
figuring out if there's anything wrong with the networkmanager import.

Thanks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1057767] Re: Translations are not in sync with Gnome

2012-10-11 Thread David Planella
So after some investigation, I've found out that this is related to
upstream sharing.

- For evolution, the issue is that upstream uses a versioned template
name (e.g. evolution-3.6.pot), whereas in Ubuntu, to benefit from
message sharing across distro releases, we use an unversioned template
name (i.e. evolution). This means that upstream sharing will not work
for Evolution, as the two templates (upstream/downstream) need to have
the same name. I've disabled upstream sharing for Evolution for now, so
that translations are imported from packages as they used to do.

- For Orca, the upstream template name was ac-package-name, which points
to a bug in upstream sharing. I've now corrected it manually to orca,
which means upstream translations should now be imported, but we'll see
if the name stays when the next byr import happens.

- For GTK+, the issue was that the template names (upstream/downstream)
didn't match. I've now edited the upstream template name to match the
Ubuntu one, so that sharing happens.

- For evolution-data-server, the problem was that the upstream bzr
import was still set to SVN. I've corrected it to be for git, but we're
having the same issue as Evolution with versioned template names.

- Translations are not in sync with Gnome

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1063170] Re: Not translatable string "Purchased from Ubuntu One" in Rhythmbox

2012-10-09 Thread David Planella
After a chat with the Ubuntu One guys, here's the situation:

- The name shown in Rhythmbox ("Purchased from Ubuntu One") comes from the name
of the folder in the file system
- Changing the name of the "Purchased from Ubuntu One" folder (i.e. making it
translatable) might then break sync with systems with a different locale
- Simply making the string translatable in Rhythmbox would mean modifying the
Rhythmbox code to allow translatable names for monitored folders.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1057767] Re: Translations are not in sync with Gnome, leading to duplication of effort

2012-10-09 Thread David Planella
Looking at it in more detail, it seems that there is not much we can do
with Evolution, other than disabling upstream message sharing and going
back to the traditional way of importing translations with package
uploads. This is due to the upstream template name being versioned [1].

However, there might be a bug in the Orca import [2], which shows an
invalid template name.

Hi Pierre,

Sorry for the delay in replying, I just found some time to look into
this issue.

Evolution is set to use bzr imports from the upstream GNOME branch. This
way, the PO files are imported directly from bzr and shared with Ubuntu,
which makes (in theory) new translations be imported daily.

However, there seems to be something wrong with the upstream bzr import,
as it's creating 3 versioned translatable templates, which means
translations from the branch are not imported.

For now, I've disabled upstream sharing for the evolution template, and
translations should be imported using the traditional package upload
mechanism.

Cheers,
David.

Title:
Translations are not in sync with Gnome, leading to duplication of
  effort

Status in Ubuntu Translations:

Wondering whether it might affect other GNOME packages and even other kind of
packages.
Despite our best effort to educate about duplication and upstream
contribution, people are redoing the work on LP, so a proper and frequent sync
is essential (now and for the next cycle)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1044744] Re: Active LTE connection not indicated in nm-applet info text (indicated as 3G)

2012-10-04 Thread David Planella
As chatted on IRC, +1 from translations. It's ok to add the translatable
acronyms, as most teams won't translate them, but that gives the teams
that do translate them to change them.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1060601] Re: [FFe]: Update rhythmbox from 2.97 to 2.98

2012-10-03 Thread David Planella
A way to easily check the impact on translations would be to do a diff
between the msgid fields in the .pot file generated by the 2.97 package
vs. the one generated by the 2.98 package. Could someone take care of
that?

Bug description:
A bunch of bugs were fixed in the new rhythmbox release but it's not
purely a bugfix release. Rhythmbox now doesn't use the musicbrainz
library but accesses musicbrainz directly. The grilo plugin change
doesn't affect us as we don't yet build Rhythmbox with grilo support.

I have run the new rhythmbox and things seemed to work.

Build log attached and my packaging branch.

  http://git.gnome.org/browse/rhythmbox/tree/NEWS

Overview of changes in Rhythmbox 2.98 "Faults"

  * New dialog for importing music into the library
  * New audio CD metadata lookup library, replacing libmusicbrainz

  being selected

  * Grilo plugin ported to grilo 0.2 API

  1. gthumb /usr/share/icons/Humanity/status/*/user-* /usr/share/icons
  /ubuntu-mono-*/status/*/indicator-messages-*

  What you see:

  A. Humanity's standalone IM status icons are a bit hard to see against
a white background -- such as Empathy's status menu -- because the
tops of the icons are white with no outline.

  B. The corresponding emblems are similarly hard to see against the
light grey, black, or blue envelopes in Ubuntu Mono's messaging menu
  icons. <http://cloudfront.omgubuntu.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08
/new-icons.jpg> The Offline and mixed-status icons are particularly
  bad.

  C. The "Invisible" icons and emblems have a pure black or white
interior, which just looks weird. <http://cloudfront.omgubuntu.co.uk
  /wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Screen-Shot-2012-09-19-at-10.34.18.png>

  D. The "Available" and "Away" icons look bigger than the others.

  What you should see:

  A. All the icons, while beautiful, are robust enough to be thoroughly
distinct against a white, light grey, or dark grey background.

  B. The icons remain simple enough that in emblem form they are
thoroughly distinct against a bright blue, light grey, or dark grey
background. If necessary, the envelope could have an emblem-shaped
chunk bitten out of its bottom right corner, to make the emblem
  distinct.

  C. The "Invisible" icons and emblems have a transparent interior.

  D. All the chat status icons look the same size.

2012-09-26 Thread David Planella
+1 from the translations team, as I think such an important feature
shouldn't block on translations. Please do send an e-mail to the ubuntu-
doc and ubuntu-translators mailing lists as per the UIFe procedure,
though.

In any case, if as Iain suggests, the messages shown to the user could
be generic enough so that existing translations could be used, that'd be
a plus for translators.

Bug description:
We will add an option either in the appearance or privacy gnome-
control-center panel (this is yet to be discussed with design).

This Commercial/Online suggestions on/off switch enables to remove all
suggestions in the dash and default lenses:
  - shopping lens suggestions in the home dash
  - u1 music store result in the music lens
  - u1 results in the video lens

All components and libunity are impacted by the change, as well as
gnome-control-center. A couple of new strings will be added to the
  latest for the option.

The fact that this lens is installed by default means that users are
shown commercial content as search results by default in the home
screen, and that search queries are sent to an external (to the user)
server. It's reasonable that one might want to turn this behaviour
off. While it is possible to uninstall the package, this isn't a
  particularly intuitive route for most.

Other lenses have a 'Filter results' item, which would solve this if
on the home screen. Otherwise, an option somewhere in the control
  centre (privacy?) would be good.

Bug description:
The online accounts UI loads the plugins integration from some
.application files. Those are not translated, not translatable.

What needs to be done, is:
  - rename the .application in .application.in
  - ensuring that upstream have an application.in files with translatable tags
(using _, as in <_description>I want to be translated). Example
[1]
  - add a tag containing the upstream domain
  - then, at build time:

  1. Running intltool-extract files.applications.in so that it gets
merged into a files.applications.in.h file. If you are using intltool
already in your build system (and you probably are), this should be
happening already and you can skip to step 2.

  2. Including the .in file somewhere in the build system (like
po/POTFILES.in for Python apps and Makefiles.am for C/vala apps) so
that it's merged into the .pot file. In Python, it's just a matter of
adding it as an extra line to the po/POTFILES.in file (example [2]):

  [gettext/xml]data/gwibber.application.in

  3. And running intltool-merge --no-translations -x -u foo.applications.in
foo.application to create the xml upstream file which is shipped
  - online-account (the g-c-c plugin) should be patched to load them, looking
at the tag and gettext (package, string)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1022943] Re: localization

2012-09-25 Thread David Planella
This was caused by bug 1048556 in Launchpad. While still not fixed,
we've since added a workaround for Banshee in langpack-o-matic (the
software that builds language packs) so that its translations can both
be done in Launchpad and shipped in language packs as intended.

Bug description:
There's no Russian localization in 2.4.1-3ubuntu1~precise1...
  No changes in interface, though.
Must be easy to solve, I think.
Had to lock version 2.4.1-3ubuntu1~hyper1+precise with Synaptic, it's okay.

  [IMPACT]
Users of non-English locales would see their Banshee interface in English
rather than localized to their locale.

This is a regression introduced in 2.4.1-3ubuntu1~precise1 due to the
introduction of the "X-Ubuntu-Use-Langpack: yes" flag in
  debian/control.

  [TESTCASE]
  1. Switch to a non-English locale that was previously supported by Banshee,
e.g. German or Russian.
  2. Start Banshee
  3. Observe the language of the interface

  [REGRESSION POTENTIAL]
Unlikely. This change merely reintroduces the .mo files that were stripped by
pkgbinarymangler.

Thanks for reporting this bug.

Could you please be more specific on what the actual issue is? Are
translations not loaded? Is there simply a delay in translations done
upstream? Are you talking about GUI or help files?

The more accurate you are, the more helpful we can be in fixing the
issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1053189] Re: UIFE: Rename "Print Settings" to "Printers"

2012-09-20 Thread David Planella
Hi Jeremy,

To be honest, I'm in two minds about this one. I think the change in
itself makes sense, although at this point in the cycle I'd be leaning
towards just leaving the string as it is. It's not the extra work, it's
just the fact that some translation teams might not notice the change
and end up with an untranslated string at release time without noticing.

I'd give it a +0.

That said, as there is already another translator that gave his +1, and
unless someone else says the contrary, I guess that's a +1 as result :)

Cheers,
David.

I'd like to rename this to "Printers" which is what GNOME calls their
panel. We have talked the past two release cycles about using the
GNOME panel by default; maybe next cycle that will happen. For
consistency, it would be better to change the name earlier.

If approved, I can upload the patched system-config-printer before
Beta 2 Freeze. I will also ensure ubuntu-docs uses the new name in its
docs before Beta 2 Freeze also.

Apologies for the short notice but I think this should be an easy
  yes/no decision.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1043152] [NEW] Strip whitespace from the "Package name(s):" field in the exhibits editor

2012-08-29 Thread David Planella
Public bug reported:

I set up and published an exhibit for multiple packages yesterday, and
had some fun this morning debugging why the exhibit was not visible on
the client.

It turns out that (apart from some other issues on the client, discussed
with mvo on IRC) the client cannot display multiple packages for
download if there is whitespace between the comma-separated list. That
is:

* 'lightread, fogger, picsaw' <- does not work
* 'lightread,fogger,picsaw' <- does work

In order to be a bit more robust, I think the server should strip the
whitespace before publishing the JSON for the client to consume.
Alternatively, the client could also do the stripping, so I'm adding a
task for it too.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1003298] Re: Cannot load translations from a locale dir other than the default

2012-05-23 Thread David Planella
Marking as invalid as per the findings on the upstream bug report: using
the gettext C API (i.e. the locale module) vs the gettext Python API
(i.e. the gettext module) makes things work.

** Changed in: gtk+3.0 (Ubuntu)

Title:
Cannot load translations from a locale dir other than the default

Status in “gtk+3.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
(Filed upstream, adding it here to keep track of it in the distro and
record the bugs that need fixing to improve the Ubuntu app developer
  experience)

I've got an application that needs to be installed in /opt, and I've
noticed that its translations are not loaded by GtkBuilder.

It turns out that even if I specify the location to load them from
(with gettext's bindtextdomain() function), GtkBuilder ignores that
and tries to find them in '/usr/share/locale'. I've also tried to use
the gtk-builder-set-translation-domain() function to explicitly set
the domain for GtkBuilder, but that did not make any difference. I'd
probably rather need a gtk-builder-bind-text-domain one, which does
  not exist.

In any case, I don't quite follow why gtk-builder-set-translation-
domain() is needed at all and GtkBuilder does not just pick the
translation domain and the locale dir values from gettext.

In short, GtkBuilder ignores any attempt to define a locale dir and
just uses the default from the system.

I'm attaching a Python example for testing purposes.

  To run the example:

  * Copy the build/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES/testglade.mo file to
/tmp/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES
  * Run the app with LANGUAGE=ca ./testglade.py

Notice that the message output on the command line is translated,
whereas those from the UI are not.

I'm also aware of this old PyGTK bug [2], but none of the tentative
workarounds there work to make GtkBuilder load translations from
  another location than '/usr/share/locale'.

Any help or comments would be appreciated, thanks!

Hi,

Rather than suggesting users to install an external package (which the
immense majority of users won't be able to do), could you point us to
the issue your package fixes, so that it can be addressed in the Ubuntu
package too for the benefit of all users?

Thanks!

  Binary package hint: gimp

When scanning the import queue in Launchpad Translations for issues
that need manual intervention, I found the following issue with the
gimp package, which prevents a smooth import into Launchpad Rosetta
and causes the Ubuntu Translation Coordinators to manually adjust or
  remove .po files.

In the po-python/ directory the po-python.pot template file is missing.
Therefore, corresponding .po files cannot be imported into Rosetta and won't
appear in the language-packs.
If the translations are not used anyways, please consider to remove the
po-python/ directory.
If the translations should be used, please fix the build script to actually
build the .pot file.

2012-02-25 Thread David Planella
Vadim, thanks for the heads up.

However, Askubuntu is a community site, so please, feel free to do the
changes or add a comment there yourself. Thanks!

As per the bug itself, it's a technical defect that should be filed
against the application in Ubuntu, rather than an issue the Ubuntu
Community Team should resolve.

Thanks.

And the same applies for the Ubuntu wiki articles in the original
report, so if this is an issue you're concerned about, please feel free
to update them as well with a note on the unexpected behaviour.

I'm sure users landing there will benefit from your contributions,
thanks!

Thanks for the pointer, Björn.

However, the upstream POT templates do not seem to include the quicklist
strings, which would be a good candidate to translate in Launchpad, as
they are Ubuntu-specific.

That particular string is already translated in Launchpad:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+source/deja-dup/+pots
/deja-dup/zh_CN/+translate?batch=10&show=all&search=previous+backup

We recently released a new batch of language pack updates, but the
Simplified Chinese ones were not yet released, as they haven't been tested.

Could someone from the Simplified Chinese team or a Simplified Chinese
speaker at OEM:

* Test the language packs currently in the oneiric-proposed repository
following the simple instructions below. Remember to add the language to
the table.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/LanguagePackUpdatesQA

Once that is done, we can release the language pack to oneiric-updates
for all users, which will get this particular string and other
translations done since the last language pack update.

Thanks.

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:

Status in “software-center” source package in Precise:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: software-center

As of now software center uses str.lower() when searching in the
  xapian db:

  utils/query.py
  22:s = search_term.lower()
  33:query =
xapian.Query(str_to_prefix[search_prefix]+search_term.lower())

There are two problems with this:
  * many languages have diacritic marks for characters but for fast typing
users usually write the base character: (in Romanian: ăâșțî and ĂÂȘȚÎ are
spelled AASTI by some users).

  * characters in the Unicode set can appear in two forms: composed and
decomposed: the character U+00C7 (LATIN CAPITAL LETTER C WITH
CEDILLA) can also be expressed as the sequence U+0327 (COMBINING
CEDILLA) U+0043 (LATIN CAPITAL LETTER C).

To solve both problems both the text entered in the xapian db and the
user's text query must be normalized.

The search function in Chromium uses ICU rules to achieve this:
  -
http://www.google.com/codesearch/p?hl=en#OAMlx_jo-ck/src/third_party/WebKit/Source/WebCore/editing/TextIterator.cpp&q=file:TextIterator.cpp&l=1882

There is a python-icu library that could help achieve this. See for
  example http://lists.osafoundation.org/pipermail/pyicu-
  dev/2010-October/000214.html

Or one could just remove the diacritical marks from the string
  altogether: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/517923/what-is-the-
  best-way-to-remove-accents-in-a-python-unicode-string

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 876622] Re: Deja-Dup not fully translated into Simplified Chinese

2011-10-20 Thread David Planella
Hi Kent,

In general it is best to file missing translations bugs against the
ubuntu-translations project in Launchpad. You can either file them
directly against it [1] or open an additional bug task (click on the
"Also affects project" link) in an existing bug.

There it will be looked at and triaged by a community of volunteers
knowledgeable in translations.

I get notified for any bugs in the ubuntu-translations project, but if
the bug is time-critical for an OEM project, feel free to ping me or
Kyle Nitzsche additionally.

Thanks!

Indicate if an app is translated in the user's locale in the Software

Bug description:
Software Center should indicate whether software is translated for
example by including a small flag icon. This way non-English-speaking
users can see if the application is available in their local language
when it contains a translated package description. Otherwise,
translated package descriptions might mislead the user to believe the
application is available in his/her local language.

  See also bug 706571.

Some use cases this would fix:

   a) non-english user clicks on a program name to see more info, sees
the description in English and assumes the program is not translated
and therefore doesn't install it, even though it might be translated
   into his native tongue.

   b) non-english user finds a program with a translated description,
installs it only to find out the program itself is not translated and
is therefore no use to him/her.

   c) user wants to install a music player in his native language. When
searching for "music player" in the software center 10 hits appear but
the user cannot filter the programs translated into his native tongue
and therefore has to use trial and error.

   d) a one line description (po-app-install data) is translated, but
description (ddtp-ubuntu) is not or vice versa. User is just confused.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: software-center

In order to speed up the translation of packages (6+ strings to
translate in most languages) in the Ubuntu Software Center, there
should be a button to "Translate this software description" below each
description that would enable users to easily provide a translation
  suggestion to the DDTP (https://translations.launchpad.net/ddtp-
  ubuntu/).
