Bug description:
It'd be great to be able to use compression formation implementations
which allow multicore CPU usage (e.g. `pigz` for gunzip, `pbzip2` for
bzip2, etc.). Imo there's no argument against using them by default
because most user just will see an significant increase of speed with
some decent default values for parallelization options (`-p` of
`pigz`, etc.) based on the CPU (cores).

But apport doesn' t show any progress bar. I wouldn' t know how long it
would take to use that to upload the huge crash file.

gnome-shell freezes after resume then unlock

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Often after resuming and then entering my password to unlock gnome-
shell, when I press the enter key gnome-shell immediately freezes. The
lock screen is still displayed, the mouse no longer responds, and the
keys no longer respond (I can't even get a tty console with CTRL-ALT-
Fn key). I have to perform a hard reset at this point because gnome-
shell remains frozen even after leaving the PC alone for 15 minutes.

I haven't been able to find any crash files or error logs.

It seems that this freeze is much more likely to occur if I have
changed location between suspending and resuming and am therefore
connecting to a different wifi router. Once, however, it happened at
home on the same router and I was able to log in via ssh from another
machine (so only gnome-shell was frozen, not the kernel). However, I
couldn't see any messages or reason that gnome-shell had crashed, so
all I could do was reboot (any hints as to what I should try at this
  stage are welcome).

Bug #1709994 looks similar but in that case a) the user is using Xorg,
not Wayland, b) he also gets past the lock screen, and c) gnome-shell
  eventually restarts.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Some windows will grab the keyboard/mouse and when the lockscreen kicks in,
this window will still have the grab and thusly, you can't enter your password
in the lockscreen.

  [Test case]
This will work only in the case that your lockscreen is set (from unity
control center, lock pane) to lock immediately (when screen turns off).

  1. Open a window that will hold the grab, such as the ssh password dialog or
a virtual
machine (such as virtualbox in fullscreen).
  2. Wait for the lock screen to activate [1].
  3. The screen won't be locked, since it's not possible to steal drag to
another window.

  [Regression potential]
For the same reason of lp:49579, we can't lock the screen (yet) if something
takes the grab in X, or we won't able to get input back. This is not a
regression because it has never been possible in Ubuntu before, while when we
tried that, it caused this bug.

A possible source of regression might be that we now try to
grab/ungrab the screen (the only X reliable way for grab checking),
when showing the dash/hud or the lockscreen itself, and this might
slow things down a little, but from measurements done this slow down
is generally about 2ms, so nothing to worry about.

  * Compiz Debdiff is found at
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/178439518/compiz-trusty-sru-2.debdiff *

[1] You can use this to reduce the locking delay:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session idle-delay 5
  and resetting it with:
gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.session idle-delay

  Original Description:

My screen just timed out and locked when a password prompt which had a
  grab was displaying.

I couldn't type my password or interact with the indicators.

gnome-screensaver just refuses to lock in this situation, perhaps
unity could do the same unless it's possible to remove and readd the
grabs yourself, but I don't think XLib lets you do that (you can only
  remove your own grabs AFAIK).

  TEMPORARY WORKAROUND TO LOGIN AGAIN:
  Click on the guest session
Once the guest session is started log out
This takes you back to the lightdm session screen you can then login to your
user session and it be in the same state

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 382056] Re: Windows moved to wrong workspace after suspend/resume

2014-07-13 Thread Gao Shichao
I 'm seeing this again. The problem with providing information to this
bug is that it happens very rarely, like once a month if I suspend twice
a day. I don' t know what information to provide here. Changing to new
to see if developers know how to write automatic testing or tell me what
information to include.

  Reproducing
  1) Use compiz with Desktop Cube and Rotate Cube with 4 faces (i.e. virtual
desktops)
  2) Suspend via gnome-power-manager
  3) Resume -- now my windows all end up on what appear to be arbitrary
desktops (regardless of where I left them before resume)

  Everything works fine using metacity.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

Many users tend to have maximized window opened on other workspaces
and use an external monitor such as a projector or one connected to a
laptop docking station. When removing this monitor, these maximized
windows will get shuffled to the current workspace. This can be
aggravating for users and is not a good user experience.

  [Test case]

  1. Have an external monitor.
  2. Use multiple workspaces.
  3. Open a window and maximize it on a workspace such as workspace 2.
  4. Move to another workspace such as workspace 3.
  5. Remove the external monitor.

  [Regression potential]

The code here is quite fragile and can be prone to some unexpected
behaviors. I took great care in trying to make sure no new
regressions are caused by this fix, but there may be some corner case
that is unaccounted for. Also note that there are already some broken
behaviors in this area that are unfixed by this code, so keep that in
mind when testing that it truly isn't a regression.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1310981] [NEW] Open system settings disables external monitor

2014-04-22 Thread Gao Shichao
Public bug reported:

I have an external display attached. When I open system settings in top
panel right button- system settings ( or through other approach to
enter the sub settings directly like time applet- TimeDate Settings) ,
the external monitor is disabled for no reason. And after that I click
the Display in system settings, the external monitor is enabled again.
This combined with other bug(1304531) that move maximized windows around
makes the open system settings process painful.

I don' t quite get why 763148 can be seen as fixed without fixing
maximized windows bug.

Title:
Adding/Removing an external monitor causes maximized windows to move
  to another workspace

Status in Compiz:
  Fix Committed
Status in “compiz” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
If I plug in external monitor, move a window to it, maximize window and
remove external monitor, window is moved to the same workspace primary screen -
this is correct behavior, but when I un-maximize it - window moves to different
workspace. This most likely is because original window positions are not
updated after removing the monitor and un-maximize still uses those old values
to move the window to supposedly original position.
Another use case is when window movement is somewhat wrong - external monitor
plugged in, window is maximized on primary screen, move focus to different
workspace, unplug the monitor, move back to the workspace when we have
fullscreen window, unmaximize it - window un-maximizes not to original
position, it's moved away by the same mount of pixels as external monitor width
is.

I expect that window stays on the same workspace - once it's on it it
should not move unless I do that manually, also I expect that un-
maximizing moves window to original position, not different.

  This is continuation of bug
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/763148, fullscreen window bug
was separated as per Christopher Townsend (townsend) wrote on
  2013-04-18.

P.S. Most likely bug can be fixed quite easy as behavior is similar to
bug I mentioned, hopefully this can be included in the same SRU.

  thanks in advance
  Eduards

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 382056] Re: Windows moved to wrong workspace after suspend/resume

2014-04-13 Thread Gao Shichao
I 'm seeing this in Ubuntu 13.10 and 14.04. Often the window moved to
wrong workspace after suspend is gnome-terminal. It is just insane, that
I disabled workspace in settings-appearance to avoid this bug. While
last time I resume from suspend, the terminal window just doesn' t
appear on click, then I enabled workspace again, to find it on the
workspace downside. I' m using an external monitor , which might be

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 874241] Re: Wrong resolutions in lightdm login screen when using external monitor connected to laptop

2014-04-04 Thread Gao Shichao
It still presents at 14.04. The login screen when you input the password
is fine. But after that, you hit enter to login, and you see on the
larger monitor, a mess of graphics is shown. It is a minor aesthetic
issue that you see every day, accumulating to a bad impression.

Bug description:
When booting with an external monitor attached, the external monitor shows a
stretched-out display, which the laptop monitor shows two black bars on each
side of a lesser-resolution GDM display. This problem persists after logging in
and is illustrated by these pictures:

  In-session display:

It's rather common to boot with the screen connected, so the use case
for this really is problematic as the Ubuntu splash doesn't look right
when a workstation is started like this. I happen to be in an
environment where everyone runs Windows and cosmetic details like this
  really undermine confidence in Ubuntu.

This was also tested with a 11.10 nightly 3 weeks ago. I have to use
the monitors utility every-time the system is rebooted to adjust
  resolutions.

  1. From the Help menu, choose About.

  What you see:
  * Firefox version 3.5.2
  * Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical - 1.0

  What's wrong with this:
  * canonical is not capitalized.
  * There's no such thing as Ubuntu canonical.
  * It uses a hyphen for a non-hyphen role.
  * It's not clear what, exactly, 1.0 refers to in contrast with the 3.5.2,
7.0.1, or whatever.

  What you should see:
  * Firefox version 3.5.2, Firefox version 7.0.1, etc
  * Canonical customizations for Ubuntu v1.0 or similar.

I manually blacklisted nautilus in the source code and it's fine for me.
I cannot understand why so few people has found this bug annoying. It's
still present in Quantal. This bug should really be fixed in Quantal
since nautilus is so essential to the system.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 989568] Re: Keyboard shortcuts do not work and cannot be changed

For me, these shortcuts do work properly but I just have to press the
keys for a bit longer(1~2s) than I did in KDE(immediately).

Title:
Keyboard shortcuts do not work and cannot be changed

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Since upgrading to 12.04 I find that while custom defined shortcuts
work (with minor reservations, see below), the system defined
shortcuts either do not work, or cannot be disabled.

For example, Ctrl-Alt-F is supposed to bring up a terminal window, but
  it doesn't.

I use Eclipse a lot, and because it has a repeat-line keyboard
shortcut that is bound to Ctrl-Alt-Down/Up, I have disabled these two
bindings in the gnome control center / keyboard shortcuts settings.
They show up as Disabled. However, they are not disabled, they
continue to send me to the workspace above/below. For this reason I am
unable to use the keyboard shortcuts in Eclipse, which is frankly
  driving me nuts.

As for the custom shortcuts, they work but I find they are slow to
react, in lack of a better term. I press they keyboard shortcut -
nothing happens. I press it again - nothing happens. I press the
shortcut 3-4 times in very quick succession (desperation setting in
:-) and then the shortcut works, launching the link 3-4 times.

  non-grey panel tray icon disappear

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I found recently that non-grey icons in panel tray( like opera's,
workrave's, easystroke's tray icon) sometimes disappear for no reason
suddenly in Ubuntu 12.04, and meanwhile the application still runs
fine. Grey icon like dropbox's still appear properly.

Afterwards if I restart the application, the tray icon is shown finely
  again.

In addition I changed setting in dconf to set all icons appear at the
  tray.

I found when you switch desktops with ctrl+alt+arrows , the disappeared icons
appear at the time of switch instantly.
