[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1959747]

Not to me, but it might to some GFX people. Although they'd probably
prefer a more recent profile.

Jamie and/or Lee, would you have a look at the profile from comment 39
and see if you find anything interesting? (I'm picking on you because I
don't know any GFX people and you both made changes in the regression

I think you'll find the error message was added to events before the fix
and is still there because there's no mechanism to remove it.

[Approval Request Comment]
Regression caused by (bug #): Bug 1555646
User impact if declined: Calendar item parsing fails to read a property, adds
an error message to the item, other clients complain about it
Testing completed (on c-c, etc.): Just landed
Risk to taking this patch (and alternatives if risky): I don't see any risk,
it's a correctness patch

I sure would. I hate this error message too, but I've never had the time
to figure it out.

FWIW, `X-` properties are [allowed in the
specification](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc5545#section-3.8.8.2)
and should be ignored by implementations that don't understand them.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1878465] Re: Lubuntu 20.04/LibreOffice Lacks Spellchecker

2020-06-04 Thread Geoff Fergusson
I appear to have fixed the problem with this:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install hunspell-en-gb

Featherpad is still telling me that I need to install a Hunspell
dictionary when I try to spell check. It gives instructions that I
expect are for KDE.

Thunderbird should nest in the toolbar. Instead I keep quitting and
having to restart the application. So the email reporting feature
doesn't work etc. This feature is common in Amarok and Transmission
  Bit-Torrent. I am using Hardy 8.04

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 109943]

2019-10-24 Thread 1-geoff
There's only a few which are indeterminate and they're important for
providing feedback to the user that something is happening. I think the
best solution, if any, is to chase the toolkit people to fix their
widget. FWIW I've not had a problem with this thing for years but it
probably does use more CPU than necessary, about 6% of a CPU for me.

Status in Mozilla Thunderbird:

Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

When sending a simple and short email with Thunderbird via SMTP the
CPU is used intensively. This seems not to be necessary. If the
sending failed and an corresponding error message dialog appears, the
CPU is still being used. When pressing ok to close the error dialog
the CPU is fine. This suggests it might be related specifically to the
progress bar. Such behavior is especially annoying on a laptop where
you can hear the CPU usage because of a starting fan.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 982316] Re: Deja Dup is unable to detect network connection

2017-01-03 Thread Geoff Seeley
I'm on 16.04.1 LTS and had the following error after configuring the
settings in the System Settings Backup:

   "Backup location not available
Waiting for a network connection..."

For me, the issue was with NetworkManager. After getting the above
error, I went to look at the Connection Information in the systray only
to get another error:

"Error displaying connection information:No valid active connections
found!"

Following: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-
applet/+bug/305606

I found that my /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf had:

   [ifupdown]
   managed=false

so I changed it to:

   [ifupdown]
   managed=true

rebooted and now the backup works fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1620358] [NEW] System-wide monitors.xml is ignored

2016-09-05 Thread Geoff Short
Public bug reported:

Using gnome-settings-daemon 3.18.2-0ubuntu3.1 on Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS

Logging in with a new user account, my two monitors are the wrong way
round. I can fix for this user by right-click; run "Display Settings"
and manually reconfiguring. This creates ~/.config/monitors.xml

I now copy that file to /etc/gnome-settings-daemon/xrandr/monitors.xml -
I expect this to apply to all other users on this PC:

$ gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xrandr
default-configuration-file
'/etc/gnome-settings-daemon/xrandr/monitors.xml'

When other users log in, they still get the incorrect display setup. It
looks like /etc/gnome-settings-daemon/xrandr/monitors.xml is having no
effect.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1494225] Re: Call audio is not routed to headset with HFP

2016-03-04 Thread Geoff Lowther
sorry not been able to set my phone up for logging at the moment -
although reasonably technical and used to using the cli for out of the
normal occasions, I don't go for the cli normally and prefer a gui, so
just need to get my head around setting up.

Not sure if it helps, but I did notice though that for normal operation as long
as you are slow in connecting everything then it does all seem to hang
together. Here's what I do (to get it to work);
- have bluetooth switched on on the phone (with the pairing already completed)
- switch on the headset and wait for the bluetooth icon to go from a black
background, to white and then back to black.
- wait 20-30 seconds (till I think it will have sorted itself out)
- press the button on the headset (the one that initiates a connection and is
also used for answering and ending calls)
- wait till the bluetooth icon goes white and the bluetooth volume 'overlay' is
shown - this can take 30-40 seconds

I can now make or receive calls and the sound/mic are passed to/from the
headset correctly.

If I try to 'rush' this cycle or answer a call then switch on the
headset, that's when the problem shows and I get connection to the
headset to no sound to or from the headset or speakers/phone mic.

Think this affects me too on my MX4 using HTC BH M200 headset. If there's
anything I can send from the phone that'll help, let me know.
Looks by the packages that are affected that it could also be loosely related

This started with me with OTA-9 and continues after OTA-9.1

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1544477] Re: No sound notification for new SMS (Ubuntu Touch)

2016-02-22 Thread Geoff Lowther
here's a zip of the media hub files before and after it going wrong (I'm
assuming that this is what the .gz files are). I don't recall changing
the volume or silent status until after it went wrong yesterday apart
from on Friday evening when it was on silent for around 1-2 hours.
Media-hub-7.gz should show when it was in silent mode (Friday evening).
Hope this info is useful - if not and you need something else please

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1544477] Re: No sound notification for new SMS (Ubuntu Touch)

2016-02-22 Thread Geoff Lowther
I believe that it is inconsistent (more than just putting into silent and back
out).
I had my MX4 in silent on Friday evening then back to normal
Saturday seemed OK
Sunday morning I thought the SMS sound notification wasn't working (vibration
still good) - I had to hard reset my phone 2-3 times to get bluetooth working
again to my headset and phone app crashed as locked up the screen (bluetooth
kept connecting but no voice transferred, then after 2-3 hard resets (power
button for 10 secs) all came good again).
Sunday evening SMS notifications all ok for multiple texts from multiple
people, sent various SMS's and a single MMS, again OK
received SMS after this, sound still good
Something happened (unknown what though)
now sound failed again on SMS...

Would you like a copy of the ubuntu-phablet-stream-volumes.tdb file
again or anything else I can provide to assist?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1029209] Re: tidy doesn't support html5 syntax

Absolutely! That is what it is all about, for sure... not 'conflicts' or
'forks' ;=))

On Dec 4 I sent a direct email to Jason asking about an update. No reply
yet.

Even re-tested the first few of the bugs listed at -
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?maint=jason%40debian.org
suggesting they can be CLOSED... and offered help dealing with the rest...

Is there anything else I can do, as a tidy maintainer, to get an Ubuntu
tidy deb-package updated?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1029209] Re: tidy doesn't support html5 syntax

2015-12-05 Thread Geoff R. McLane
As explained in that issue, and in an Ubuntu question
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tidy/+question/276623
the https://github.com/htacg/tidy-html5 is not a fork. It is canonical
for HTML Tidy as of 2015-January-15...

first release: https://github.com/htacg/tidy-html5/releases/tag/5.0.0
last release: https://github.com/htacg/tidy-html5/releases/tag/5.1.25

There is no conflicting version numbers. This Samantic type versioning
was adopted in the first release, and will continue. And the package name
will remain tidy...

I am trying to get in touch with Jason Thomas to try to do something
about debian and ubuntu outdated tidy packages. Hopefully soon...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1486456] Re: Please set back libvpx1 into Wily archive

2015-11-20 Thread Geoff Cummins
I did a work around, I went and downloaded the older version at
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libvpx1 and installed it with dpkg.
This seemed to make everything happy for now.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1512066] Re: Desktop screen and icon corruption

2015-11-07 Thread Geoff
If I may take the opportunity to show examples of corruption taken as
screenshots prior to reverting to 15.04.

At present I am trialing mint as a second resort.
I will attempt the recommendations.

Like hundreds if not thousands who dislike windows in any format, I changed
to Ubuntu 10.4 many years ago, and progressed through upgrades as they
became available.
It is only since moving from 14.10 that these corruptions began.
Best Regards.
and thank you for the response
Geoff

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1512066] [NEW] Desktop screen and icon corruption

2015-11-01 Thread Geoff
Public bug reported:

This is now the 3 rd time to reinstall 15.10. Previously the 15.04 version has
been re-installed.
Under 15.04 the problem (bug) was restricted to the desktop background image in
that after a few days and new updates loaded the screen became corrupted with
the appearance of a view like looking through opaque reed glass. The blame was
put on 'Variety' which was in use. Peter Levi terms this problem a 'low key
bug'? It makes no difference whether 'Variety' is in use or not
As the problem (bug) only affected the desktop background then it was workable.
The new release of 15.10 was hoped to iron out the problem, but once again
after receiving updates corruption began, and is much more severe in that icons
become distorted when the mouse passes over them sections of text work become
a. invisible or b. distorted to be unreadable.
To date I have re-installed 15.10 four times. Everything is stable until I
begin to accept updates. and the corruption begins.
I have brought up this problem before since 23 rd October.
I cannot be the only individual suffering from this problem. I have two
machines and the results are the same on both. I have changed monitors to no
avail.
The programme was re-installed yesterday and is stable without any updates.
I run also windows 10 on this machine but have experienced no problems with
display or documents text/ icons

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1371401] Re: randomly freezing

2015-03-31 Thread Geoff Williams
Summary
===
I think I am affected by this same bug, I have all the above systems and get
hard lockups with Linux kernel 3.16 every 5 - 15 minutes.

Attempted upgrading to (x)ubuntu 14.10 to see if this improved stability
and laptop crashed so badly during the upgrade that it broke grub and
had to be recovered with ubuntu boot-repair. This alowed the system to
boot and I was able to complete configuration with dkpg --configure -a
--pending

System still crashes every few minutes when running (x)ubuntu 14.10 and
about 50% of the time crashes before even reaching the login screen. If
I'm lucky attempting to swich VCs will resolve things but the system
always crashes eventually and has to be powered off by holiding the
power button for 10 seconds or via the magic sysreq key. No other key
cominations work.

Hardware

I also have an Asus laptop with an Nvida card which is what led me to this bug
report, the following hardware is present:
* Laptop model Asus G750JS (ASUS-NotebookSKU)
* GK104M [GeForce GTX 870M]
* 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (i915 - not used)
* BCM4352 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter
* QCA8171 Gigabit Ethernet

BIOS/DMI information
==
I tried flashing the latest BIOS from
(http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/ASUS_ROG_G750JS/HelpDesk_Download/)
but it didn't fix anything.

Running the commands listed above gives:
$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version  sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
G750JS.208
07/17/2014

Driver info

This problem occurs with both the nouveau and nvidia drivers:
rc nvidia-331-updates 331.113-0ubuntu0.0.4 (removed
by additional drivers application)
ii xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.11-1ubuntu2

Workaround
==
This configuration is rock solid on kernel 3.13. I was able to boot to a
previously installed kernel (3.13.0-44-generic) and the system performs as
expected and is stable.

Debug info
=
I was able to take a photo after the ubuntu system upgrade crashed (attached).
The system has been generating a bunch of problem reports too so I've been
clicking the submit button. Happy to rovide futher info or try a few
experiments to get this resolved.

Just wanted to confirm that the trackpad in my XPS13 9343 is working
perfectly with the daily mainline kernel today:

Bug description:
Tap-to-click does not work unless I tap several times really fast
(which is really hard to do), which also causes the cursor to move.
This is a poor user experience.

Relatedly, sometimes when using two-finger scrolling, the touchpad
will get stuck such that I can let go and the cursor won't move. I can
continue using two fingers to try scrolling, which works, but I can't
get the cursor to move. If I tap the cursor several times really fast,
I can eventually get the cursor unstuck so it moves again. I suspect
that this is related to the tap-to-click issue.

Title:
Nickname not over-riding names in email address

Status in Mozilla Thunderbird Mail and News:
  Fix Released
Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
From what I have read in the support forum the nickname should take
priority in the search for an email address in the to: field. It does
not appear to work any more.

  Example:

One friend's address is Markm...@.com. The other is
Jamesjames.m...@.com. Both are in my address book with Mark
entered as the nickname of m...@.com and James as nickname for
  james.m...@.com.

If I type james in the To: field I get james.mark as a first entry in
  the list of available addresses.

If I type mark I get the same address again, when I would prefer the
first optional address to be m...@.com

  Reason it is needed:
I am trying to avoid sending emails meant for m...@.com to James.mark
because I do not notice in time that I have defaulted to the first entry in the
list of available addresses.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1259369] [NEW] Built-in display brightness drops to 0 after monitor rearrangment

2013-12-09 Thread Geoff Flarity
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13. I use it with an external monitor via
HDMI at home and at work. If I re-arrange the monitors in the display
settings (which is to the left/right) at home my laptop screen (build-in
monitor) goes black. Turns out the backlight brightness gets set to 0. I
can just increase the brightness using the hardware button, but this is
still super annoying.

Note, I had to follow this to get the brightness keys working in the first

Another vote for comment #19 - solved it for me too. (Thanks!)

I ran into this after a normal update-manager upgrade from 13.04.

Title:
  Not authorized to perform operation

Status in “policykit-desktop-privileges” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After a new install of 64 bit Ubuntu 13.10 on my second partition, I
used dpkg to reinstall all the same packages I had on my 32 bit 13.04
partition. I copied all my home directory files over and updated all
the packages. I now find that I don't have permissions to change the
network settings; I can't mount my other hard drive or any USB stick
using nautilus, or (udisks without using sudo)' I can't run synaptic
  by clicking on the GUI (I have to go to a terminal and sudo synaptic);
etc. I can't find any documentation on the configuration of
policykit-desktop-privileges, so I'm filing this bug. For me it
appears to be totally broken. Maybe someone can help me out.

  Thanks,

  Rob

As of right now this bug is gone for me - successfully running unity on
top of unity-system-compositor on my AMD A8 3500m with an embedded
Radeon HD 6620G. Very happy man :-)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1005813] Re: Lightdm doesn't terminate alternate session login

2013-03-26 Thread Geoff Clements
Hi Robert,

I have just followed steps 1 to 15 and visually I can confirm A to E
exactly as you have written. I now have two X servers running:

$ ps ax|grep X
 2153 tty7 Ss+0:13 /usr/bin/X :0 -core -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0
-nolisten tcp vt7 -novtswitch -background none
 3992 tty8 Ss+0:00 /usr/bin/X :1 -core -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:1
-nolisten tcp vt8 -novtswitch

I can post the log if you like.

Lightdm doesn't terminate alternate session login

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Choosing Switch to different user in Ubuntu gives you another login
screen, which is very nice and useful. However after using that
alternate session, lightdm keeps the X server and greeter for that
alternate session open and running. Gdm, on the contrary, terminates
the X server for the alternate session when you log out of it.

This behaviour does make a difference when you run Ubuntu on a laptop
on battery. Using the alternate login just once after boot (and ending
the session again) initiates a constant cpu load of 1-2% (on my
laptop). Doesn't sound much. But compared to idle without the second
X server and greeter, this is an increase of about 75%.

I admit that I didn't have the time to keep the laptop running idlely
und doing some real battery measurements. But with a laptop on
battery, you should use any possibility to save energy.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 953919] Re: corrupt boot splash and terminal console with nvidia driver

2013-03-22 Thread Geoff
I have found a workaround that works at least for me. I appended
vga=792 nomodeset to the kernel arguments, and I provided an
/etc/X11/xorg.conf specific to my setup. Incidentally, my graphics card
is a GeForce4 and not a GeForce3 as stated earlier. For the instance
where I was seeing a blank screen with just a cursor, it was sufficient
to append nomodeset without the vga argument, resulting in a low-
resolution console and tty 1-6 screens. For the instance where I was
seeing black and white stripes and blocks, it was necessary to provide
both vga and nomodeset arguments.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 953919] Re: corrupt boot splash and terminal console with nvidia driver

2013-03-21 Thread Geoff
I have the same problem using the nvidia driver (actually nvidia-96)
with a GeForce3 card and a recent installation of Ubuntu 12.04. While
booting up, the grub menu works fine, but after that, the screen goes
blank with just a cursor. The lightdm login screen comes up with less
than full resolution, but that's no big deal. The X session itself
works fine. However, the tty 1-6 screens are blank with just a cursor,
just like the boot console screen. I have a second 12.04 installation
on another partition of the same hardware, which was upgraded from
previous versions of Ubuntu. Booting from this partition, I have the
same problem, except that the console and tty 1-6 show a low resolution
screen with just black and white stripes and blocks, just like the
original poster described, instead of blank with just a cursor. I have
no idea when the problem started, because I had been using the nouveau
driver for a year or two before now. However, that driver started to
have its own problems recently too.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1033695] Re: External HDMI Monitor does not get detected / invalid EDID checksum

2013-03-12 Thread Geoff
Chris, you mention overriding the EDID. I have a similar problem using
the i915 driver with a laptop display that fails to report its EDID. I
have tried using drm_kms_helper, but I haven't gotten it to work yet.
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/edid
contains correct EDID data from my firmware/edid file, but
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/modes
remains empty and the driver provides incompatible modes. Could someone
possibly help me?

I also found that the issue appears to be when the .wav is not in the users
home folder. Perhaps a permissions thing ?
I copied the sound file to my home folder and it now plays correctly in TB.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 878941] Re: Mail Notification Plugin Doesn't Notify

2012-05-01 Thread Geoff Goehle
I just upgraded to 12.04 and this is *still* a problem. Its even worse
because now there isn't a gnome-stracciatella-session package to install
anymore. Gaa!

As a potential fix, could the check in mail-noficiation.c be changed
from

if (g_strcmp0(g_getenv(GDMSESSION), gnome-stracciatella) ==
0) {

to

if (g_strcmp0(g_getenv(GDMSESSION), gnome-shell) == 0) {

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 923749] Re: New push mouse offscreen feature really difficult to get

2012-02-07 Thread Geoff Teale
Just confirming the same behaviour on a thinkpad E525. It is true that
the behaviour feels somewhat different on the built in trackpad than on
my Filco USB trackpad, but I think perhaps that this is perhaps
cognitively clumsy too.

  In unity 5.2 RC1:
  - revealing the launcher by putting mouse on the edge and pushing seems very
hard (the distance to push it long). This is even worse on trackpad.

  Related issue:
on multimonitor setup, going from one monitor to the edge suffer from the
same issue (you have to push the mouse a lot, more than it felt naturally
needed). Especially when you drag a window using the trackpad.
Also, when you put your mouse on the central point slowly to go to monitor 2,
you get stuck even if you believe that the mouse is already on the monitor 2
(because there is one pixel left on monitor 1 and the whole cursor is drawn on
monitor 2)

This is on a dell Latitute XT2, with default mouse velocity option.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 878941] Re: Mail Notification Plugin Doesn't Notify

2011-10-21 Thread Geoff Goehle
After digging around a bit I've found that I can't get mail-notification
to display a notification icon at all. The notification I was seeing
earlier was being displayed by the evolution-indicator plugin.

I can hear a sound when I recieve a new message, so the mail
notification plugin is running, but it either does not display a
notification message or it tries to and fails.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 878941] Re: Mail Notification Plugin Doesn't Notify

2011-10-21 Thread Geoff Goehle
I figured out the problem. In mail-notification the mail-notification
applet only sends notifications if ubuntu is running a stracciatella
gnome session. Stracciatella-gnome-session was a vanilla gnome
session with very little ubuntu. Presumably mail-notification turns
itself off for the regular ubuntu gnome session because of the evolution
indicator.

However! Now that ubuntu has moved to unity, the gnome-shell session
doesn't have the evolution-indicator conflict anymore and mail-
notification should be enabled.

The way to fix this would be to remove the is_stracciatella portions of
the mail-notification plugin.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 878941] Re: Mail Notification Plugin Doesn't Notify

2011-10-21 Thread Geoff Goehle
After thinking about this for a while, I don't think it will be as
simple as just removing the is_stracciatella check. That check should
definitely be removed, its crazy for users to have to install some
mystery package so that there evolution plugins will work. (Especially
now that there is a real need for mail-notification for gnome-shell
ubuntu users since evolution-indicator isn't a viable replacement.)
However mail-notification needs to be disabled by default for unity
users and enabled by default for gnome-shell users (and vice versa for
evolution-indicator).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 878941] [NEW] Mail Notification Plugin Doesn't Notify

2011-10-20 Thread Geoff Goehle
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu 11.10 with gnome-shell. I am using the latest
evolution with the mail notification plugin turned on.

When I get mail I expect the mail notification plugin to present a popup
and then leave a message in the notification tray. This does not always
happen. One reproducible circumstance is if I leave evolution open on
one desktop, move to another desktop and then leave my mouse focus on a
window on the second monitor. (For gnome-shell the second monitor
shared across all desktops by default). However, I've noticed the
behavior in other instances.

** Affects: evolution (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
