[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1738581] [NEW] apport is leaking environment variables (including passwords!) to public bug reports

2017-12-16 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

See the bug report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/1738564
created with ubuntu-bug.

Apport includes the file JournalErrors.txt
This file includes e.g. the following line.
Dez 16 19:11:31 hostname /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[9679]:
dbus-update-activation-environment: setting
MPD_HOST=...@.xxx.org

Normally it would be not problem that gdm-x-session write this to the journal,
because the journal is not intended to be published on the internet.

Setting confidential informations via environment is maybe not the best
idea, but a legal procedure and for `mpc` the only way to set this
information.

IMHO the apport utility is here the problem, because it includes the
file with risky information to a public visible bug report.

Note: I manually delete the attachment in the mentioned bug report. But how can
I sure that a web crawlser hasn't read/preserved that attachment?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1738564] Re: 'File/Save As' produce only empty files

2017-12-16 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt
On some machines I'm using a 'no change backport' from artfull:
 3.26.2-1~ubuntu16.04.1~c42.ppa1 from ppa:dirk-computer42/c42-backport-gnome3

The problem isn't related to this version - so it seems for me to be
solved (or hidden) in a newer version.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 838757] Re: HP hs2340 HSPA+ Mobile Broadband Modem does not work

2017-04-22 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt
For me it is working below 16.04 if I tweak my system.

1. The udev rules tweak isn't needed any more - it is in the package
version of the file now correct.

2. Check 'lsmod |grep cdc' - below xenial the modules aren't loaded any more
Add to /etc/modules a line with the content:
cdc-wdm

After that the gsm modem is working again.

Bug description:
  Description: Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS
  Release: 10.04
  network-manager:
Installed: 0.8-0ubuntu3.2

I have installed Ubuntu 10.04.2 on HP Probook 6560b. The internal
Mobile Broadband Modem is HP hs2340, which is correctly identified.

In neither the LTS release or the live CD of Oneiric Ocelot Alpha 3
release does Mobile Broadband work 'out of the box'

After fiddling around, I finally got the modem working. The missing
bit was to do a hard shutdown from Windows, leaving the modem to an
enabled state. After that, the connection worked instantly.

  Some remarks:
  =
  - network-manager should really provide more information to what it is doing.
In all previous attempts, network-manager would be doing something for a while
with no result or error message

  - rfkill always listed the hp-wwan as 'not blocked'

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1392887] Re: serial wacom devices gone after upgrade to utopic/14.10

2015-03-27 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt

Comment #8 works also here for fix it.

Title:
serial wacom devices gone after upgrade to utopic/14.10

Status in xf86-input-wacom package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Recently I upgraded ubuntu from 14.04 to 14.10 on my HP EliteBook 2760p.
After that, all serial wacom devices (for the touchscreen) are gone:
     serial wacom stylus
     serial wacom eraser
     serial wacom touch

xinput -list and xsetwacom --list don't show these devices and the
Wacom Tablet section of the system setings reports 'no tablet
detected' rather than showing the usual settings. Booting with the old
linux 3.13 kernel makes no difference to the new version 3.16.

To find out what happened I played around on a spare partition with the
following results:
  1) fresh installation of 14.10 - result is the same like reported above: no
touch devices
  2) fresh installation of 14.04 - touch works out of the box
  3) upgraded the fresh installation of trusty to utopic: touch devices gone
again
  4) manually changed repos to utopic after fresh installation of 14.04 and
updated ONLY the xserver-xorg-input-wacom package: apt pulled some dependencies
and installed without errors, touch devices gone (so it reproduces the error
exactly as the full upgrade)

  WORKAROUND: Replace the udev rule
/lib/udev/rules.d/69-wacom.rules/wacom.rules by the old file from Ubuntu 14.04
by putting it in /lib/udev/rules.d/ :

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081015]

2013-10-03 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt
I would suggest to think about integrating the debian/icedove patch back to
thunderbird.
The behaviour of thunderbird for lockPref is unexpectedly different from the
firefox behaviour.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081015]

2013-10-02 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt
I just retest the issue. It seems to be a thunderbird@ubuntu problem.

* I can still reproduce it in thunderbird 24 below ubuntu 13.04.
* I have also "backported" icedove from debian/jessie. Here the problem is not
reproducible and the lockPref statement is working correct.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1228921] [NEW] thunderbird 24 segfaults on ldap user accounts

2013-09-22 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt
Public bug reported:

If thunderbird 24 is used with an lan account - it segfaults

stat("/etc/ldap.conf", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0664, st_size=9584, ...}) = 0
geteuid()   = 11000
--- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---
+++ killed by SIGSEGV (core dumped) +++

If it runs on a local user account - this doesn't occur.

The problems is shown on raring and precise on multiple machines.
The problem shows on gnome-shell and plain unity installations.

Thunderbird 17 doesn't have this problem. As a temporary workaround I pin the
lan installations to thunderbird 17.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1228921] Re: thunderbird 24 segfaults on ldap user accounts

2013-09-22 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt
Using thunderbird 17 works as before.
Maybe remarkable is that I can see the following console output either on
raring/gnome-shell and precise/unity installations.

(process:4343): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion `sys_page_size
== 0' failed
(thunderbird:4343): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user
id (11000)

Also here using lts-raring kernel on precise.
Switching to xserver-lts-raring doesn't help (and breaks other packages like
virtualbox/wine)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1004515] Re: segfault in accounts-daemon when logging in / gdm crash if user account is added or deleted

2013-05-27 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt
I have a similar problem as described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/+bug/1067414

I can confirm that the solution is to upgrade the accountservice
packages.

In my ppa https://launchpad.net/~dirk-
computer42/+archive/c42-backport/+packages I provide a "no change"
backport from raring to precise.

Using this backport results in the following update:

   accountsservice (0.6.15-2ubuntu9.6 => 0.6.29-1ubuntu8~precise1~ppa1)
   gir1.2-accountsservice-1.0 (0.6.15-2ubuntu9.6 =>
0.6.29-1ubuntu8~precise1~ppa1)
   libaccountsservice0 (0.6.15-2ubuntu9.6 => 0.6.29-1ubuntu8~precise1~ppa1)

Using this packages solves for me the problem.

I suggest a backport of accountservice to precise to fix the problem in precise.
As a preliminary workaround my ppa may be used.

  Hi!

Since NetworkManager 0.9, a simple user is not allowed to connect to
some wireless network unless it is granted (through policy kit or
  appropriate permissions)
  org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.settings.modify.system. This permission
allows to alter existing connections as well. An active user should be
authorized to use any wireless network if he wants to by default (like
in previous versions). Or it should be possible to configure network
manager to allow users to connect to wireless networks without
enabling them to modify other system settings.

Title:
cups pdf prints only blank page

Status in “cups” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: cups

  Hallo!

After upgrading my sytem to Natty the Cups PDF printer does not work
correctly any more. Everything worked fine until then. I have
reinstalled cups and poopler. No difference.

  1. It prints (indicating mutliple pages printed). But the invariable result
is a file containing a singe empty page of size 2192 bytes, not depending on
the document printed (indeed, also the print test page dialog produces this
result).
  2. The printer settings are not respected. The empty page has letter format.
In my settings I have A4.

I am not a power user, so please tell me if I can provide more useful
  information.

The "print to file" dialog, however, works (but is cumbersome).

  Hope this helps!

  Thank you & Cheers!
  Ulf Martin

P.S. Sorry for sending the system info twice. Didn't realize the web
  form window.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1082062] [NEW] thunderbird-esr is missing

2012-11-22 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt
Public bug reported:

The rolling releases of thunderbird in ubuntu 12.04 (LTS) and newer
renders thunderbird in some use cases as unusable or a known security
problem.

In some circumstances the usability of thunderbird is bound to
additional add-ons, which are not available through the ubuntu
repositories. An add-on I depend on is e.g. the funambol connector (-->
https://maurus.net/resources/funambol/ ).

If I update to a new version of thunderbird, I have a time frame of days till
weeks there is now new version of this add-on is available.
To avoid this situation I have to pin the thunderbird to stick on the old
version.
The old version doesn't contain the security fixes :-/

So what solution I take I'm loosing functionality or security.

To avoid this situation an thunderbird-esr version inside the ubuntu archive
would help.
(Especially where are not much new functionality will happen in the next
thunderbird releases.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 704123] Re: PIN is asked despite it's configured into the system connection

2012-06-24 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt
Please reopen the bug.
I can also affirm that the problem is still existing on ubuntu 12.04
(network-manager0.9.4.0-0ubuntu4.1)

Title:
PIN is asked despite it's configured into the system connection

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: network-manager

  I've configured a system-wide 3g broadband connection.
In fact it's there a file with all the provided details in
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ .
  If I switch (log-out + log-in) to a non-administrative user, as soon as I
plug the USB 3G modem I get asked the modem PIN.
This is included into the mentioned file.
The objective is to allow a "normal" user to connect with the modem with out
the knowledge of username, password and PIN.
  The defails follow.

  $ lsb_release -a
  No LSB modules are available.
  Distributor ID: Ubuntu
  Description: Ubuntu 10.10
  Release: 10.10
  Codename: maverick

  How to reproduce the bug:
  1. Log in as an administrative user (the first one you create at installation
time)
  2. Plug the USB 3G modem into a port
  3. Go to System-->Preferences-->Newtwork Connections-->Mobile Broadband
  4. Fill all the needed details (as well as the PIN)
  5. Check "Automatically connect" and "Available to all users"
  6. Test the connection is working.
  7. Check the file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/
  8. Reboot (maybe just logout and long is enough)
  9. Log in as the administrative user
  10. Plug the USB modem

  What happens
The system asks for the PIN. You can ignore this request. Then you can go to
the
netowrk icon and select the broadband connection and click it. This time the
PIN
is not required and the connection fires up.

  What is expected to happen
No PIN is required at the modem insertion and the connection fires up
automatically.

  Extra steps.
  11. Create another non administrative user which is capable to connect
through modems (groups dialout and dip).
  12. Switch to this new user
  13. Plug the USB modem.

  What happens
The system asks for aìthe PIN. You cannot ignore this request.

Can't establish audio or video calls

Status in “empathy” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:

When I try to place either an audio or a video call to a GTalk user, I
  get the following error message:

  Can't establish audio stream

  Technical details
Could not create the valve element

When I receive a call from a GTalk user, my webcam lights up for < 0.5
s, then it turns off and I get the same error as above.

Google searches suggested installing gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, but
that made no difference; the error is the same.
