[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1307786] Re: Macbook Pro 3, 1 NVIDIA Corporation G84M [GeForce 8600M GT] resume from suspend fails

2015-10-05 Thread Israel Dahl
I upgraded fully to Vivid, however the resolution with the nouveau driver was
really bad.
I will have to test this, but that computer's LCD is failing so it will take me
a bit of time to test it

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1289807] Re: User Accounts endless loop (never opens)

2015-02-28 Thread Israel Dahl
Cecil,
It is (from my understanding of this bug) something to do with NVIDIA. and
their drivers and the way they link with certain system libraries.

The people at Ubuntu do not make the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, so no one can
be assigned. No one can fix this except Nvidia (AFAIK). It *may* be something
as simple as an issue in the packaging, though it could be something as complex
as the makefile having issues, or a problem in the code.
If it is a packaging issue, you may be able to fix it but I do not know.

That is the problem we face when being forced to use proprietary
software. I cannot have suspend unless I use the proprietary driver.
But when I use it the graphics have odd glitches and problems, there are
these weird hard-to-solve bugs and there is no support. I suppose you
could try to contact the NVIDIA developers, but that is possibly a dead
end.

I have since updated to Utopic, so I cannot help much... sorry. You might find
more answers using IRC #ubuntu on freenode
Just ask there and wait for someone to help. Alternatively you can try
AskUbuntu.

When you find your fix, you should post it here for others in your
situation

2014-09-30 Thread Israel Dahl
hmmm,
locate libwayland_ltst-client.so.0
I think you may need to link that correctly...

I am guessing this is mainly a 64bit issue... my machine is 64bit, as
your is.

I wonder what the problem is with this...
I know I installed something and then it happened... but I honestly don't know
why this happens... :(

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1289807] Re: User Accounts endless loop (never opens)

2014-09-29 Thread Israel Dahl
Hi do you have an NVIDIA graphics card as well?
lspci | grep VGA
will give you the output.

Anyhow,
running:
ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa-egl/libwayland-egl.so.1
/usr/lib/libwayland-egl.so.1
fixed it for me
maybe reversing it will fix it for you
ln -s /usr/lib/libwayland-egl.so.1
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa-egl/libwayland-egl.so.1

it is worth a try I suppose... since it is a soft link you can always delete
it if it doesn't work.
Though you might need to reboot to get it working.
Do you have libhybris installed as well?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1289807] Re: User Accounts endless loop (never opens)

2014-03-14 Thread Israel Dahl
I manually fixed it, so should I delete the linked file first, and then
uninstall nvidia-prime?
It doesn't seem that deleting that would reinstall a linked file... but I will
try it if you like

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers-331” package in Ubuntu:

Status in “unity-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
When I open the control center and click on User Accounts, the User Accounts
never open. It flashes and goes back to the control center screen. The
program then becomes unable to be closed. I am required to kill the process
manually.
I cannot open any other options, after I click on the User Accounts option.
All options do the same thing... flash their screen and return to the control
center, except the ones that launch an external application (U1, Language
settings, etc...)
Clicking on Time settings completely crashed the program, when it was in this
state.
Normally EVERY option just works as expected (other than the User Accounts)

Obviously I am using Trusty (since this program just came into existence)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1289807] Re: User Accounts endless loop (never opens)

2014-03-12 Thread Israel Dahl
output:
/usr/lib/nvidia-331-prime/ld.so.conf
/usr/lib/nvidia-331/ld.so.conf
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/ld.so.conf

I didn't specifically install it, but it was installed

libhybris:
  Installed: 0.1.0+git20131207+e452e83-0ubuntu9
  Candidate: 0.1.0+git20131207+e452e83-0ubuntu9

The problem began around the time I installed the proprietary Nvidia
drivers. Cheese stopped working, and I could no longer access the User
Accounts. the workaround (making a symlink) fixed both problems.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1289807] Re: User Accounts endless loop (never opens)

2014-03-09 Thread Israel Dahl
I had the same thought earlier today... unfortunately nothing happened
after I reinstalled it... I haven't rebooted, though. I am not sure
that that would make much of a difference since it is a library not a
module... but I don't know that much about all the internals.

Status in “cheese” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Cheese used to start and work fine. I am not entirely sure when the problem
started. But now Cheese does not start.
  $ cheese

cheese: error while loading shared libraries: libwayland-egl.so.1: cannot

2014-03-09 Thread Israel Dahl

Here is the other bug report...

Maybe I should report this under something else, like the libegl1-mesa-
drivers ?

User Accounts endless loop (never opens)

Status in “unity-control-center” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
When I open the control center and click on User Accounts, the User Accounts
never open. It flashes and goes back to the control center screen. The
program then becomes unable to be closed. I am required to kill the process
manually.
I cannot open any other options, after I click on the User Accounts option.
All options do the same thing... flash their screen and return to the control
center, except the ones that launch an external application (U1, Language

Clicking on Time settings completely crashed the program, when it was in this
state.
Normally EVERY option just works as expected (other than the User Accounts)

Obviously I am using Trusty (since this program just came into existence)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1289807] Re: User Accounts endless loop (never opens)

2014-03-09 Thread Israel Dahl
I get:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa-egl/libwayland-egl.so.1
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa-egl/libwayland-egl.so.1.0.0

So it IS there, and
I think we are getting closer, though...

I have also installed Skype (which starts just fine).
But I installed Skype from the Ubuntu repo, and I used the Additional Drivers
tab to install the Nvidia drivers
version: 331.38
So. maybe Nvidia is responisble for this somehow.

I was using the noveau drivers initially, (and would like to again) but
my computer would simply hang when it went into suspend mode.

That helped me out...
here is the workaround
https://bugs.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/+bug/1206371/comments/17

ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa-egl/libwayland-egl.so.1 /usr/lib

You are right about the link... somehow it became broken (or removed,
really)

I do that everyday... unfortunately the problem exits still...
Could it be that installing the NVIDIA drivers did something unexpected. I had

Would reinstalling the ubuntu-desktop package resolve this?

I usually do some pretty wild stuff to my installs, but this one has
been very normal, and I only use one DE... so there is very little
conflict, and I have not removed any programs this is a pretty fresh
install.

Title:
User Accounts endless loop (never opens)

Status in “unity-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When I open the control center and click on User Accounts, the User Accounts
never open. It flashes and goes back to the control center screen. The
program then becomes unable to be closed. I am required to kill the process
manually.
I cannot open any other options, after I click on the User Accounts option.
All options do the same thing... flash their screen and return to the control
center, except the ones that launch an external application (U1, Language
settings, etc...)
Clicking on Time settings completely crashed the program, when it was in this
state.
Normally EVERY option just works as expected (other than the User Accounts)

Bug description:
I am on Ubuntu 12.10, upgraded from 12.04. Dell Inspirion 17R with 2GB RAM.
Rhythmbox works just fine or so I thought until today. I was attempting to
rip a CD and put it in Ogg Vorbis format. When I clicked on EXTRACT, I got a
dialog window telling me that Additional software is required to encode media
in your preferred format:
  Vorbis encoder
When I click on Install to get the plugin, it searches for it and says
Python (v2.7) requires to install plugins to create media files of the
following type: Vorbis encoder then says Required plugin could not be found
Same thing with MP3 except there finds a plugin but that is only for I386 and
not for x64 so I can not isntall either.
I can actually not encode any music in any format.
I can play any music in any format (tried Ogg and MP3) and that works just
fine without a problem. Can not rip CDs at the moment as the encoding does not
work as above.
It is probably since upgrade from 12.04 as on 12.04 it was working. I have
not used this for some time and just tried to do it today with the above fail.
It is reproducible every time for me.

Tried manually installing packages to handle that without success.
Let me know if more data is needed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 329389] Re: Party mode ununderstandable and undocumented

2013-02-23 Thread Israel Dahl
Still missing in 13.04.
Really chaning the phrase Party Mode to Fullscreen would eliminate the
problem.
Party Mode is gibberish. A fullscreen app is how we used to use apps back in
the day and it wasn't always a party. Or is the TTY a terminal Party
Mode? Really Fullscreen describes it MUCH more clearly.

The manual does not explain what party mode is. The status bar help
text is not helpful at all; when you hover the cursor over the Party
Mode menu entry, it laconically says Change the status of the party
  mode. (Is that even English?)

I was scared that it would ruin all my playlists and send my email
address to the spammers, but I tried it anyway. It seems to toggle a
full-screen view. Then why is it not called Full Screen? Does it
  do something more?

  The top Google hit http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=694932
seems inconclusive to me. Does Party mode involve changes in how the
play queue can be manipulated and/or how the computer can be used?

  Minimal fix:
   * Describe Party Mode in the on-line help

  Bonus points:
   * Improve the Status bar help text

I am testing Raring Ringtail and this issue seems to have been fixed.
If anyone is interested in testing it, that could put an end to this bug
report.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 977639] Re: NetworkManager erroneously reports iwlwifi as disabled by hardware switch

2013-02-10 Thread Israel Dahl
I marked it confirmed because Yiyo confirmed the bug and I also can confirm the
bug.
the workaround:

rfkill unblock wlano
sudo service network-manager restart

does indeed fix the issue.

In my case, I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW275J
This was not an upgrade, but a fresh install (I preferr fresh installs)

Not sure what that means Does that mean there is no fix, it is
already fixed since some devices need it off? Shouldn't the devices
that need it off be specifically blacklisted, or is that not possible?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1078704] Re: headphone jack sense not enabled

2012-11-15 Thread Israel Dahl
Ok, so it is in the whitelist already, well... for some reason the first
time I used the headphones it blared through the speakers as well, so
even though it is supposed to be whitelisted for jack sense that DID NOT
occur. I had to manually turn on the headphone jack sense by using the
program gnome-alsamixer and checking the headphone jack sense checkbox.
I don't know what alsactl restore is at all, sorry. Once I have checked
the headphone jack sense box in the gnome-alsamixer program the
headphone jacksense remains in effect every time I use it. I had to
enable it the very first time. Now it is enabled. It should be enabled
by default (as new users might not know they can install a program to
enable it)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1078704] [NEW] headphone jack sense not enabled

2012-11-14 Thread Israel Dahl
Public bug reported:

bug is present in Ubuntu 12.04 and Xubuntu 12.04 and Lubuntu 12.04.1 64bit
alsa-base 1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu1 on this machine (64 bit)
I except Ubuntu to automatically sense the presence of headphones and disable
the speakers. This is not the case, the speakers and headphones play
simultaneously. I must install gnome-alsamixer to manually set the jack sense.
Alsa should have this enabled as the default setting. This seems as though it
should be a very easy bug to fix, though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1078704] Re: headphone jack sense not enabled

2012-11-14 Thread Israel Dahl
I will have to check on this tomorrow... I assume it is registering,
because after installing gnome-alsamixer I can check the Headphone Jack
Sense and it will work. It was not enabled by default however. Thanks
for the quick response

Music files are placed in: Multiple locations set

When I click 'Browse' and open a location of my preference

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 329389] Re: Party mode ununderstandable and undocumented

2012-10-24 Thread Israel Dahl
In the manual the Key Shortcuts says F11 is for Full screen, but there
is no entry in the manual like the above patch submitted by Mr. Paul.
Searching for 'Party Mode' produces no results. It might be nice is
party mode came with visualizations, too.

The manual does not explain what party mode is. The status bar help
text is not helpful at all; when you hover the cursor over the Party
Mode menu entry, it laconically says Change the status of the party
  mode. (Is that even English?)

I was scared that it would ruin all my playlists and send my email
address to the spammers, but I tried it anyway. It seems to toggle a
full-screen view. Then why is it not called Full Screen? Does it
  do something more?

  The top Google hit http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=694932
seems inconclusive to me. Does Party mode involve changes in how the
play queue can be manipulated and/or how the computer can be used?

  Minimal fix:
   * Describe Party Mode in the on-line help

  Bonus points:
   * Improve the Status bar help text

How about adding something like http://omgubuntu.co.uk or
http://dailyubuntunews.com as well.
I think https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats is very useful,
because it explains how to get the DVD player functioning. Just downloading
the codecs wont make libdvdcss4 work.

Custom keyboard shortcuts do not work if they use the Super key

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Prior to Precise 12.04, you could use the Super key in shortcuts, for
  example Ctrl-Super-M.

However, with 12.04, if you set a shortcut with Super, it simply does
not work. There is no error message; it just doesn't do anything.

  To duplicate:

First, ensure that zenity is installed (it should be, by default).

  Second, create the shortcut:

  1. System Settings Keyboard Shortcuts Custom Shortcuts
  2. Press +.
  3. Name: Test
  4. Command: zenity --info --title='Test' --text='Testing shortcuts'
  5. Apply.
  6. Click on Disabled.
  7. Press Ctrl-Alt-M

  Third, test it:

  1. Press Ctrl-Alt-M
  2. A dialogue displays.
  3. Close the dialogue.

  Fourth, use the Super key:

  1. Click where it says Ctrl-Alt-M
  2. Press Ctrl-Super-M

  Fifth, test it again:

  1. Press Ctrl-Super-M
  2. Nothing happens.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 796076] Re: When run as root [gksudo gedit whatever] gedit tries to open a 2nd 'untitled document 1'

2012-04-17 Thread Israel Dahl
I have this problem still in 12.04 Beta.
I had this problem before in Oneric... but kinda got used to it, and just
remembered it today when I was doing some
gksu gedit work... I also tried gksudo gedit
surprisingly sudo gedit doesn't open the extra tab, though I don't intend to
use sudo instead of gksu, or gksudo.
I am not terribly annoyed, but it is a bug needing to be fixed for the precise
release.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 975133] Re: Sylvania SMPK4444 Mp3 player tries to open as Photo CD

2012-04-11 Thread Israel Dahl
I was running the live Beta I don't suppose I can update the live Beta can
I?
Unless there is a more recent version of the Beta out with updates.
I'll install it to disk in another partition, and get back to you on it...

Sylvania SMPK Mp3 player tries to open as Photo CD

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:

  Ubuntu 3.0.0-17.30-generic-pae 3.0.22

When the Mp3 player is connected via USB, the auto run window indicates that
I have instered a Picture CD
This is incorrect, however the MP3 player does have a camera, and can contain
pictures. The Unity launcher identifies is as a 3.8 GB filesystem, and uses
the MP3 player icon.

Overall a very small bug but a bug never-the-less.
I will test on the live Beta as well

I am running it, I just updated and it didn't change. It still indicates that
it is a picture CD.
Thanks

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 975133] Re: Sylvania SMPK4444 Mp3 player tries to open as Photo CD

2012-04-11 Thread Israel Dahl
Ok, so I didn't reboot when I did the updates, Now it Indicates that it is my
MP3 player, it doesn't tell me it is a picture CD (which is great) Nautilus
does indicate that it is a picture CD and MP3 player. Maybe it shouldn't say
picture CD... it could detect that it is on an MP3 and say something slightly
different such as These are picture files
but... it works they way I need it to, though the Nautilus indicator isn't
completely precise.
Thanks for your quick attention!!!

it does have a PICTURES folder

Renaming it makes the MP3 mount like a USB memory stick.
But of course I can't access the pictures on the device (using the devices OS)
it also has a MUSIC folder, but Rhythmbox loaded everything at the root
directory... though moving things didn't seem to change it.
Nautilus also tells me on the indicator that appears above the tab bar that it
is a Picture CD.

Thanks for your help!!

2012-04-07 Thread Israel Dahl
I tried the MP3 player on my older computer running Lucid and ran xprop
WM_CLASS
The odd thing about Lucid is it shows 2 Pop-up windows. One for the MP3 files
and one for the picture files, again saying it is a Picture CD
