Last night I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10. It went surprisingly well.
Just about everything works except that I lost my shutdown icon and
the hibernate selection in my sessions menu. I was able to hibernate
via the terminal so I know it stil works but I would prefer to do it
from the sessions menu, as usual. I would also like to get the
shutdown icon back in my gnome bar. Can someone direct me to the
  proper procedure?

  Thanks in advance.

2014-03-19 Thread John Kim
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test
it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running
apport-collect and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.

Xorg should be way more resilient or at least print detailed
information in presence of errors in configuration files

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Basically the real issue is that whenever there's an error in some xorg
configruation file, xorg fails to start, instead of trying to fallback to some
minimal working settings and/or printing debuggable information about the error.
It's too fragile. By doing something wrong with some xorg configuration file,
you may end up with a system that won't even boot and allow you to fix the
error.

I'll delete the original description as it is not relevant. (I guess it can
be seen anyway in the edit history)

  See also

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-304/+bug/1239472
which is a somehow related case (an error in some xorg config file rendering
the whole system unusable, and no clue to the user about it)

Title:
  Revolutionizing File and Folder Management

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  Opinion

Bug description:
Since the dawn of graphical user interfaces, there has been almost no
change in now we manage and organize files and folders. The file
managers of today are fundamentally identical to the file managers 20
years ago. All of the file namagers of today - in any operating
system, including mobile - have severe limitations. Two of those
limitations are mention below. A concept for a new, radically
different file manager, free of those limitations is then presented.

  1) Suppose you have some personal file or a file from work that you
want to save to your computer. However, you can't quite decide in
which of your folders to put the file. Perhaps you have three
directories in which that file would belong equally well. You have a
couple of options. A) you make a choice and put the file in one of
those three folders, or B) you really want that file to be in those
other two folders as well, so you place shortcuts in those other two
folders. Suppose you choose B). After a year you go back to that file.
You find the folder that contains the actual copy but you want to know
in which other folder you put a shortcut to that file. In some file
managers and operating systems you can do that (although it will take
  time), in others you cannot.

  2) For many of us, one of the most annoying tasks is file management. Many of
us have external backup drives where at least a couple of times annually we
simply dump everthing important from our computers. Pehaps we just put
everthing in a single folder or two, or do some minimal organization, and put
it in the backup drive. We always think that once we find some free time we
will organize those files, but we never find that time. As a result, after a
couple of years our backup drives begin to resemble the contents of a garbage
truck in terms of how messy everything is. After a certain point, we might even
begin feeling that organizing the contents in the backup drive is simply a
hopeless task that would take weeks to accomplish.
Why is that? What makes file management such a difficult and time consuming
task? The answer I have come to is the following. The file managers of the
present force us to make one choice when there might be several equally valid
choice. Here is what I mean. Suppose you have a thousand files - of various
kinds - that you want to organize. There is probably tens of ways of organizing
those files. Let's give more specific examples. Suppose you are doing academic
research and those 1000 files are all related to your research - shortcuts of
websites, research papers, your papers, videos, pictures, algorithms, code,
etc. One way of organizing them is by type - you have a folder for each file
type. Another way is to separate the files by subtopic. Or maybe you want to
organize them by source - perhaps you want to put the research papers and
programs from different universities in different folders. Let's suppose you
overcome this challenge and decide to organize the files by topic - a folder
for each topic. Then you come to a second problem. Some files - say some
research papers - belong to two or more topics (folders). The task of
organizing the files becomes very difficult, therefore. There are many equally
valid ways of organizing those 1000 files but the file managers force one to
make a single choice. What if we did not have this limitation. What if we were
able to make all of those choices simultaneously.

The aforementioned are two of many limitations that the file managers
of the present have. I came up with a concept of a file manager that
is free from the those and other limitation. A file manager that does
not force the user to make a single choice when organizing files but
allows the user to make all the possible choices. A file manager which
would transform the task of organizing our backup drives from being a
dreadful and impossible task to becoming a task that is enjoyable and
  quick.

The concept I am proposing is best explained with pictures but I will try my
best to explain it in words while relying on the reader's imagination.
I am proposing a file manager which displays files in two different ways
"Galactic View" and "Singular View". These are virtual views - I will explain
what I mean later.

  Galactic View -
imagine a galaxy where each star is a file (this can be either 3D or 2D). You
have the ability to zoom in and out. The distance between two files represents
how closely related those files are according to the ju

Title:
14.04 installation does not install german keyboard

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hi,

I just tried the (beta release) of today's version of Ubuntu 14.04.

I used my PXE boot server and used the 14.04 pxe boot loader to
install the amd64 version into a virtual machine, running under
virtualbox on older ubuntu. I've selected xubuntu to install (which
should be irrelevant, since it seems to be a problem of the base os
  installation).

Although I've chosen the german version and ran through the usual
keyboard detection (which correctly found de nodeadkeys and correctly
setup /etc/default/keyboard), the system lacks german keytables and
comes up with english keyboards. The keyboard configuration in X11
(XFCE) also lists the english keyboard only.

Since the default settings of XFCE is to not use own keyboard tables
but those of the underlying system, X11 comes up with english settings
  as well.

Overriding the system settings in XFCE's keyboard configuration allows
to manually select german keymaps, which work. But that's not the idea
  and rather a workaround.

However, I did not yet figure out how to manually fix that the console
level Linux does not have the german keymap.

So it's not a problem of X11/XFCE. It is a problem of the console
  level linux environment.

Title:
Keyboard Layout silently switches to US even though only German is
  enabled

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  I am using Ubuntu 13.10 on a Lenovo x200.
From time to time, on boot-up or wake from sleep, my keyboard layout will
have switched from German (Switzerland) to something at least very like English
(US). I need to have a second input language configured in order to get back to
my layout: Using Alt+Shift accesses the correct list and thus will switch me
back to German (Switzerland).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop ISO of the
development release - Trusty Tahr. It would help us greatly if you could
test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of
Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your
help.

2014-02-24 Thread John Kim
Pretty sure there's a duplicate of this bug out there. For now, I'm
marking as confirmed. This issue exists on my Lenovo Thinkpad X220, but
there certainly is a workaround.

I bought a Dell XPS 13 recently and the brightness adjust shortcuts are
showing the graphics on top left of the screen that the brightness is
getting changed but I am not seeing any change in the actual brightness.

I added a second user account, after the first time switching between users,
user switching just stopped working.
If I use the menu and just select another user, most often nothing at all
happens.
If the screen is locked and I push the switch user button, it looks like it
tries to go back to the login screen, but ends up coming back to the lock
screen.
For a while I could log out of one user, then log in as another but now that
isn't working either. Selecting logout from the menu will bring up the little
logout or shutdown thing, then after I select logout nothing seems to happen.
If I open a terminal and type gnome-session-quit it says something about how
its not in a running state.

I currently have to restart the computer to switch users, which is
  really frustrating.

Bug description:

When I pick up a browsertab using the touchscreen, it can never let
go. It doesn't matter if I go to another mouse device or any button I
press, and I can't get back control over the system. Not with alt-tab
or any other key combination will allow me to continue working, I can
just keep dragging the browsertab around.

Only way to stop it is Ctrl-Alt-f1 and kill the browser from outside

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Style::SquareButton writes a small png to /tmp/wut.png
   * If a user creates /tmp/wut.png as a symlink to some file on the system
writeable by the owner of the unity process, then he/she can destroy that file.

  [Test Case]

   * log out
   * log in with the upgraded package
   * open the terminal application using control-alt-T, ensure the terminal is
focused
   * invoke the HUD by pressing the Alt key and typing f (the HUD menu
selection 'drop
down' must appear to trigger the png file write)
   * check for presence of "/tmp/wut.png"

  [Regression Potential]

   * n/a

  [Other Info]

   * Marc Deslauriers from the security team said it isn't a problem on
Ubuntu because we have symlink restrictions (in this case part of the
  Yama LSM [1]).

   * We believe, not everyone is necessarily running Yama LSM.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

+ 1) "Unmount" is a technical term users may not know. "Remove safely" or

  2) It is not easily discoverable. This is bad for two reasons:
- 2.1 - People does not necesarily know that a usb-stick should be
properly unmounted to ensure filesystem integrity.
- 2.2 - It is not possible to just eject a CD by pushing the eject button

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1279766] Re: Not able to encrypt user's home folder when creating a new user

2014-02-13 Thread John Kim
Hello Jeroen, I think the answer you may be looking for is found here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EncryptedHomeFolder

Hope this helps. Meanwhile, I will set the bug report as invalid. I do
think, however, that the Ubuntu Documentation should include some
information on this matter.

Bug description:
During Ubuntu installation a user is created and there is an option to
encrypt the home folder for this user. However, there is no such
option when creating other users in System Settings | User Accounts,
which might lead to the expectation that other accounts are also
created with an encrypted home folder. However that is not the case,
other users are created with ordinary home folders as I recently
discovered when booting Ubuntu from an USB stick. Also there is no
easy option to encrypt them. Please add the same option to the dialog
  for creating other users.

Note: I considered this a security vulnerability, because the absence
of the option to encrypt home folders for creating other users might
lead to the assumption that these folders will be encrypted too.

  Ubuntu 13.10 x64.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1189093] Re: Suspend resume immediately

2014-02-13 Thread John Kim
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test
it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running
apport-collect and any other logs that are relevant for this
particular issue.

  3. Click "About".
  4. Click "About" again.

What you see (unless you look really closely):
  3. Nothing.
  4. Nothing.

  What happens:
  3. A "License" line appears below the visible part of the page, slightly
altering the scrollbar.
  4. The "License" line disappears.

  What you should see:
  3. Something much more obvious.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 723001] Re: no screensaver capability

2013-06-09 Thread John Kim
The only possible method of picture screensavers is F-spot, not

Obviously there is screensaver capability; else, this bug would have
been reported now, but at the least there is something missing from
the documentation that needs to be fixed to instruct me better how to
  get it working.

Using Shotwell 0.7.2 under Ubuntu 10.10.
Documentation says to select the Shotwell Photos screensaver theme under
System->Preferences->Screensaver. This option is not available (though F-spot
photos and Pictures folder are).
Documentation also says in order to change the tag used for the screensaver
to select screensaver under edit->preferences in Shotwell. There is no
screensaver tab, button or option (only display, library location and external
editors)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1075196] Re: Rhythmbox never starts minimized

2013-06-09 Thread John Kim
** Description changed:

  Hi! I'm on Quantal (12.10).

  What I expected:
- If I lunch rhythmbox (2.97-1ubuntu6) from Dash, from Alt+F2, from terminal
ecc it should show the main window.
+ If I launch rhythmbox (2.97-1ubuntu6) from Dash, from Alt+F2, from terminal
ecc it should show the main window.
If i start it from the sound menu (by clicking the Play button, not the
application name) it should start and start playing without showing me the main
window.

  What I obtain:
- There's no actually a way to start rhythmbox minimized.
+ There's no actual way to start rhythmbox minimized.

In old versions there was an option --hide to launch it without showing the
main window.
In newer versions there should be a gsetting key that remember the last state
(minimized, normal, maximized).
In the last verion it's simply impossible to launch it minimized.

  Way to replicate this:
Open rhythmbox, then closed it (Ctrl+Q), then push "Play" in sound Menu.
It does not start playing and, instead show the main window.

  Steps to replicate:
  1) launch SC from terminal

  4) note incorrect "Updates" field
  5) see following error in terminal:

due to error parsing markup: Error on line 1: Entity did not end with
a semicolon; most likely you used an ampersand character without
