[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1276379] Re: fglrx-installer 2:13.101-0ubuntu0.0.1 fails with some legacy devices (Radeon HD 2000 3000 4000)

2014-03-08 Thread Joost Van Durme
Thanks to #13, my hero! I have the driver working again.
Pitty that support is completely dropped for HD series.
ATI lost my support as well. Going to NVidia for my next laptop.

Title:
fglrx-installer 2:13.101-0ubuntu0.0.1 fails with some legacy devices
  (Radeon HD 2000 3000 4000)

Status in “fglrx-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [Updated description]

Update of the fglrx-driver (version 2:13.101-0ubuntu0.0.1 on 2014-02-03)
brought by update-manager (through ubuntu-updates repos) on Precise doesn't
work on some legacy devices.
The main symptom is the fallback to unity-2D.

This bug seems target only Precise with no LTS Enablement Stack activated, in
other words with Linux 3.2.x and XServer 7.6.
== please : confirm or infirm using:
  uname -rm
  apt-cache policy xserver-xorg

It may be in relation with #1058040, about non-support for Radeon [Mobility]
HD 2xxx, 3xxx, 4xxx on Ubuntu 12.10 and higher.

  1)Description:Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS

  3) I expected that the driver :
   - set up
   - work

  4) It did'nt work :
   - Ubuntu was very slow
   - Unity fall in Unity-2d mode
   - when I taped CTRL+SUPER, desktops appears blue
   - fglrx-amdcccle failed
   - fans were turning at a high speed
   - lots of warning messages as described bellow

  5) Workaround
I had to downgrade manually the driver to the old 8.960, which works without
problem.
You could do it using Synaptics our using the CLI

I tried to do an apt-get remove fglrx fglrx-amdcccle but apt-get gaves me
fglrx-updates in replacement , with the same issues. I experimented
fglrx-update some months (a year?) ago with similar problems, but at that time
it was a conscient experimentation.
The 13.101-0ubuntu0.0.1 could maybe stay in fglrx-updates, and no fglrx ?

2014-02-25 Thread Joost Van Durme
I keep on having this error:

Hence nautilus is unable to show the iphone's content.

12.04 LTS, iphone 5s ios 7.0.6.

What a joke (ingo tried his best, it's up to others to fix this).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1195725] Re: Nautilus window jumping with dual monitors

2013-08-26 Thread Joost Van Durme
I can confirm what Prasanna sees. When Chromium is launched maximized, typing
in the address bar makes the browser jump to the non-external screen.
No bug when Chromium is not maximized.

I have a dual monitor setup (big desktop style where mouse goes from

and external screen on the right. I have an ATI Radeon HD3635 card
using fglrx drivers and I'm always using the Gnome Classic (No

  What happens:

  1. Open Nautilus program on ext screen and maximize it
  2. Double click on a random folder
  3. The Nautilus window jumps to the laptop screen

  What should happen:

  1. Open Nautilus program on ext screen and maximize it
  2. Double click on a random folder
  3. The Nautilus window should stay where it is. On the ext screen.

  When it doesn't happen:

  1. Open Nautilus program on ext screen and make sure it's not maximized
  2. Double click on random folder
  3. The Nautilus window stays on the ext screen

I also have a startup script doing this:

  /usr/bin/xrandr --output CRT1 --right-of LVDS
  /usr/bin/xrandr --output CRT1 --primary

Where CRT1 is the ext screen and LVDS is laptop screen.

Any help is appreciated, even more because Precise stays supported until

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1195725] Re: Nautilus window jumping with dual monitors

2013-06-30 Thread Joost Van Durme
** Description changed:

Not sure whether this is a Nautilus bug or window manager bug, but here
  goes ...

A bug report has already been filed at askubuntu :
  http://askubuntu.com/questions/279641/nautilus-dual-monitor-issue

I have a dual monitor setup (big desktop style where mouse goes from one
screen to the other) in Precise 12.04.2 with my laptop on the left and
external screen on the right. I have an ATI Radeon HD3635 card using
fglrx drivers and I'm always using the Gnome Classic (No effects)
  environment.

  What happens:

  1. Open Nautilus program on ext screen and maximize it
- 2. The Nautilus window jumps to the laptop screen
+ 2. Double click on a random folder
+ 3. The Nautilus window jumps to the laptop screen

  What should happen:

  1. Open Nautilus program on ext screen and maximize it
- 2. The Nautilus window should stay where it is. On the ext screen.
+ 2. Double click on a random folder
+ 3. The Nautilus window should stay where it is. On the ext screen.

  When it doesn't happen:

  1. Open Nautilus program on ext screen and make sure it's not maximized
- 2. The Nautilus window stays on the ext screen
+ 2. Double click on random folder
+ 3. The Nautilus window stays on the ext screen

I also have a startup script doing this:

  /usr/bin/xrandr --output CRT1 --right-of LVDS
  /usr/bin/xrandr --output CRT1 --primary

Where CRT1 is the ext screen and LVDS is laptop screen.

Any help is appreciated, even more because Precise stays supported until
  2017. And it's an annoying bug. ;)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 908650] Re: System Settings window cannot resize

2012-07-09 Thread Joost Van Durme
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 936257 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/936257

This inconsistency also annoys me and I found a little workaround.
Edit this file:

/usr/share/gnome-control-center/ui/shell.ui

In the beginning you will see these lines:

object class=GtkWindow id=main-window
property name=title translatable=yesSystem Settings/property
property name=resizableFalse/property
property name=icon_namepreferences-desktop/property
property name=window_positioncenter/property

Add this line after the last property:

property name=width_request1000/property

And modify the resizable line to:

property name=resizableTrue/property

This will fix the width to 1000 pixels or whatever you enter and make
the window resizable. You can also play with the height_request
property, similar to width_request. It won't remember anything when you
resize though. It will always open at 1000 px width. But at least the
damn scrollbar is gone and all icons are visible.

cheers peepz.

Title:
  System Settings window cannot resize

Status in GNOME Control Center:
  New
Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I don't know the technical details of this package. It is the default
settings manager in Ubuntu 11.10, latest version as of 12/25/2011 at
8:10 PM EST. This can be accessed by clicking the gear/power button
icon in the upper right of the screen, and selecting the top option,
System Settings. I am trying to make the window full screen, but
I there is no maximize button, my maximize shortcut doesn't work,
double-clicking the title bar doesn't work, and the window can't be
resized through the edges of the window. I would have included the
package name or looked at the man pages, but I can't figure out what
package this is. I tried going under helpabout as in most
applications, but there is no menu bar. I even recognize the
application from Ubuntu 10.10, which I no longer have installed, nor
do I plan to install to fix this.

You might be wondering why I'm even posting this bug report. The sound
manager now exists solely in this application, and I have multiple
audio devices. My most commonly used audio devices are my speakers,
which is a 4.0 surround setup, a stereo Bluetooth headset, with
microphone, and an HDMI port on my graphics card. Since I cannot
resize the window, and the icons only have one size, I am forced to
work with what I have. The audio devices are large blocks in a
scrollable list, which could technically be replaced with medium sized
icons. The HDMI and speaker devices have a number of useful options
like left-right balance, front-back balance, and the connector type.
These take up the majority of the bottom of the window, and could take
up less space if their labels were moved to the left or right of the
sliders they describe, rather than below each slider.

The simplest and best solution, however is to simply make the
application scalable. I have a rather large display and can afford to
have all sorts of options lying around waiting to be put to good use.
Some people have smaller screens, and will appreciate my suggestion to
make icons smaller. In the even that smaller icons become available,
however, make sure that the larger versions remain available. Just
because tablets and phones are getting smaller doesn't meen you need
to force lower resolutions: people are also trying to make HD TVs,
increase screen size, and even bring HD to portable devices. Linux is
a scalable environment: as more applications support Unity, more
people will be willing to use it. Just make sure that those of us who
built servers and gaming PCs aren't sitting at what might as well be a
  first generation iPod.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 937822] Re: [precise] F10 always opens the menu, cannot be overriden (after xkeyboard-config update)

2012-03-19 Thread Joost Van Durme
There is a workaround for the context menus in gnome-terminal NOT to
open upon pressing F10, it is in post#8 of this thread:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=129872

Create a new file: ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css, then add this:

@binding-set NoKeyboardNavigation {
unbind shiftF10
}

* {
gtk-key-bindings: NoKeyboardNavigation
}

Close all terminal windows and restart terminal.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2012-01-19 Thread Joost Van Durme
Should I file a new bug for this or will you work on that too
eventually?

  ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:

  Binary package hint: unity

In my particular configuration I have an external monitor hooked up to
my laptop on the left of the laptop display. The unity bar is ending
up on the laptop display though making it in the middle of the two
  monitors.

This makes it quite difficult to activate the bar with a full screen
application open on the laptop (hitting the upper left pixel of that
  monitor without going over).

I think it would make more sense to make it configurable which monitor
the bar ends up on, or at least look at the orientation of the
monitors when determining where to put the bar.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 917655] Re: clicking on quicklist bookmark does not give focus on nautilus

2012-01-18 Thread Joost Van Durme
Hi Didier,

sorry to say that it still doesn't work as expected. I am able to open
e.g. the Documents folder from the quicklist once, but not more than
once after I close Nautilus.

What I did:

1. Start a new session
2. Right-click on Nautilus launcher icon and select Documents, this opens
Nautilus with Documents folder opened
3. Close Nautilus
4. Right-click on Nautilus launcher icon and select Documents, this does
nothing anymore

2012-01-18 Thread Joost Van Durme
Daniel, it doesn't seem to work for 12.04 right now. Are you aware of that?
I mean, dragging the black bar to the right most external monitor has no
effect. Launcher stays on the left laptop screen.
Sorry for hopping to another version of Ubuntu, but I'm testing Precise Alpha
now. ;)

Have the same issue here with the last updates.

See

1. Start a new session
2. Right-click on Nautilus launcher icon and select Documents, this opens
Nautilus with Documents folder opened
3. Close Nautilus
4. Right-click on Nautilus launcher icon and select Documents, this does

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 917655] Re: clicking on quicklist bookmark does not give focus on nautilus

2012-01-17 Thread Joost Van Durme
Right-clicking on the nautilus launcher icon and then left-clicking on:

- a custom bookmark
- documents, downloads, video, music, pictures, home

does not open Nautilus. Well, nothing happens actually.

Nautilus does open when you click on Home Folder or Open A New
Window

Is this the same issue as you, Pavol?

Precise Alpha 1, updated all packages.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2012-01-13 Thread Joost Van Durme
HI Daniel,

the grep command does not give me any output. I did however install all the
upgraded files from the ppa with synaptic.
I dragged the black bar in Display settings to the right external monitor but
without effect. Even after restart.
Did I miss something perhaps?

Thanks a lot for the help.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2012-01-13 Thread Joost Van Durme
Ok I see what's happening now. The dpkg command tells me the fix is installed,
but it seems to be only for Unity3D, not for Unity2D.
And I'm using Unity2D since Unity3D is heavily slowed down with ATI cards using
the fglrx driver. Moving windows is chunky.
I logged back in with Unity3D and the launcher is now on the correct screen.
Unfortunately I have to use 2D because the graphics are too slow in Unity3D
with my card.
Any chance on a fix for 2D, Daniel? :-)

Ok all is solved now. I unchecked the Sync to VBlank option in ccsm and
the lag is gone in Unity3D. I'm now fully operational. :) Thanks!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 742544] Re: Launcher is shown on the wrong screen in some multi-monitor setups

2012-01-12 Thread Joost Van Durme
Hi Daniel,

I'm using 11.10 with an ATI card (Radeon HD 3650) and I'm having this issue.
I installed the fix from your ppa, but no luck.

Basically, the launcher is always on the left screen (as specified by xrandr)
and the --primary flag (this is my way of defining the primary monitor) of
xrandr is ignored by unity.
And I would like my rightmost external monitor to be the primary screen.

Any ideas on this matter? Would benefit really a lot from it.

Thanks!
