[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1367870] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 system with Radeon HD 6330M hangs regularly, especially when using Google Chrome
Unfortunately the motherboard was trashed by the incorrect BIOS update. After 2 weeks and quite a bit of money I now have a new system - but using a different motherboard and a different graphics card (Nvidia this time). The guy who fixed the system thought the previous AMD card was broken, although I had seen no sign of that myself. Since my system has changed so much I can no longer provide you with debug info on this issue. So feel free to close it unless you think someone else will have a similar setup and be able to provide you with the relevant info. These appear to be particularly likely when playing Flash-based games such as those on Facebook. Scroll up and down using the vertical scrollbar or the mousewheel and chrome will segfault. Unfortunately it looks like you pointed me at the wrong BIOS update version. Based on the MSN number on the back of my PC (10011367) I should have flashed it with the one at http://www.medion.com/gb/service/_lightbox/treiber_details.php?did=8289. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1367870] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 system with Radeon HD 6330M hangs regularly, especially when using Google Chrome
OK, I've cleared the CMOS data by setting the appropriate jumper on the motherboard. I've also taken out the CMOS battery for a while. But I still can't boot the PC - I still see nothing on the screen. I've also burnt a CD with SystemRescueCD on it. I can put it in the PC's drive but it won't boot from it. To my mind this all suggests the BIOS was flashed successfully but that the new version is incompatible. Do you have any ideas on how to proceed please? Is it possible to flash the BIOS chip with the original BIOS version I was using? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1367870 Title: Ubuntu 14.04 system with Radeon HD 6330M hangs regularly, especially when using Google Chrome Status in xorg package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I'm reporting this bug at the request of k...@chromium.org at https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=404357#c34 . [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1367870] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 system with Radeon HD 6330M hangs regularly, especially when using Google Chrome
Hi Christopher - thanks for following this up. As the machine was a dual boot with Windows Vista (32 bit) I rebooted the machine into Windows to perform the BIOS upgrade. I ran the .exe file you pointed me at, then ran the 32-bit version of flash.bat from a DOS prompt. The old BIOS was erased and the new one appeared to be written ok. Then the machine was shut down by the program. However it won't boot up again! All I get when I switch the PC on is a low humming noise that lasts indefinitely. I see nothing at all on the screen - no BIOS info, nothing. I'm writing to you from a different machine now. So it strongly looks like the BIOS upgrade failed:(. I have to go to work now but I'm hoping you'll be able to advise me on how to recover the machine when I get back. Presumably there's some way of getting a BIOS onto a new PC before any OS is installed since the BIOS has to be there first? I'm happy to try with the new BIOS again, or, if that fails, somehow get hold of the original BIOS version again. But right now my smoothly working machine has been transformed into an almost dead lump of metal:(. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1367870] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 system with Radeon HD 6330M hangs regularly, especially when using Google Chrome
@carlodoro88: There already is a bug raised against chromium - https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=404357 . In fact I was asked by the chromium people to raise this bug! There appears to be a strange interaction between the open-source drivers for AMD cards and Xorg (the version used in ubuntu 14.04) and Google Chrome. Sometimes I got crashes with Firefox instead of Chrome, but much less often. I suspect Chrome works with graphics in such a way that it's more likely to trigger the crash. I can't remember if Chrome was always like this on ubuntu 14.04 or only in more recent releases of Chrome (36+). ** Bug watch added: code.google.com/p/chromium/issues #404357 http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=404357 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1367870 Title: Ubuntu 14.04 system with Radeon HD 6330M hangs regularly, especially when using Google Chrome Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I'm reporting this bug at the request of k...@chromium.org at https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=404357#c34 . @Pieroxy - Sorry to hear that because I've had no system hangs since I switched to the proprietary AMD drivers 5 days ago. Does anyone know if Canonical or ubuntu developers will be trying to fix this or a duplicate of it, please? None of the suggested fixes apply or have worked for me on 14.04. I won't be upgrading my other computer from 12.04 until this issue is fixed. (When I tried that computer on the 14.04 Live CD it also wouldn't reconnect to wifi after waking from suspend.) Rebooting the computer doesn't always even work for me, and not suspending it at all isn't very energy-saving. It pains me to say I find myself using Windows more these days as a result... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1286552 Title: No wifi after suspend Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: After suspending ubuntu the wifi doesn't work. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1286552] Re: No wifi after suspend
I seem to be in a similar position to Nicolas. Before a suspend, with wifi working, WWAN is disabled according to 'nmcli nm'. Then, after suspending, with wifi not working, WWAN is enabled. However, sometimes wifi doesn't work even after restarting my Dell laptop and WWAN is disabled after restarting regardless of whether or not wifi is working. So the WWAN enabled/disabled may be a red herring. I've also noticed link=yes in the 'configuration' entry for the wireless adapter section of 'sudo lshw -C network' when wifi is working but link=no when wifi does not work. But maybe the link attribute is just another way of indicating whether it's working or not (i.e., an effect rather than a cause). I don't know what the 'link' value means. Wifi used to reconnect for me without any problems on my Dell in 12.04 LTS. It's only since upgrading to 14.04 I've had these problems (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2218612). Interestingly, wifi fails to reconnect after suspending if I'm running off the 14.04 Live CD too. Presumably wifi would reconnect successfully after suspending if I was running off a 12.04 Live CD but I haven't tried that. Maybe if we ran these or other commands before and after suspending on 12.04 and 14.04 Live CDs we could isolate what's changed. ** Attachment added: "before_suspend_wifi_working.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1286552/+attachment/4096909/+files/before_suspend_wifi_working.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1286552 Title: No wifi after suspend Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: After suspending ubuntu the wifi doesn't work. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1058040 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1058040 Hi Daniel. That's exactly what I did when I upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 - used the makson96 PPA. That worked for 12.10 but it didn't work for 13.04. So are you saying there is no way I can use ubuntu 13.04 with my laptop then? I don't care what driver I use as long as I can see my screen! If I can't get 13.04 to work I'll have to go back to 12.10, which would be a shame. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1176441 Title: fglrx (not installed): fglrx kernel module failed to build Status in “fglrx-installer” package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: Please see http://askubuntu.com/questions/290583/how-to-use- ubuntu-13-04-with-ati-rv635-mobility-radeon-hd-3650-graphics-card ProblemType: Package DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.04 Package: fglrx 2:8.970-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.8.0-19.30-generic 3.8.8 Uname: Linux 3.8.0-19-generic i686 ApportVersion: 2.9.2-0ubuntu8 Architecture: i386 CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins' CompositorRunning: compiz CompositorUnredirectDriverBlacklist: '(nouveau|Intel).*Mesa 8.0' CompositorUnredirectFSW: true DKMSKernelVersion: 3.8.0-19-generic Date: Sat May 4 23:19:12 2013 DistUpgraded: 2013-05-03 11:02:58,369 DEBUG enabling apt cron job DistroCodename: raring DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: fglrx, 8.970: added GraphicsCard: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV635/M86 [Mobility Radeon HD 3650] [1002:9591] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:02a0] InstallationDate: Installed on 2010-12-21 (865 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" - Release i386 (20101007) MachineType: Dell Inc.
