Title:
Thunderbird 31 regression: changing focus with TAB in compose window
  during address autocompletion

Status in Mozilla Thunderbird Mail and News:
  In Progress
Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
There are two similar/related regressions in Thunderbird 31, when
typing address(es) in the 'To' field(s) of the compose window. Both
regressions involve the widget focus behavior when navigating via
keyboard after typing an address that is in your autocompletion
address list. In one case, we see unexpected behavior when pressing
TAB while autocompleting an address, and in the second case, we see
unexpected behavior when pressing SHIFT+TAB in the same scenario.

Comments are borrowed below from the upstream bug reports:

  https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1043784
  https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1051564

  Issue #1:

  STR
  1 compose new msg
2 in exactly the last empty recipient row (with set recipient type), type a
searchword which triggers at least one autocomplete suggestion: e.g. [To:
][searchword autocomplete suggestion]
  3 press tab

  Actual Result (TB31)

  a) focus moves away from the current recipient row immediately
  b) a new empty recipient row is created
  c) the just-added recipient row gets focus

  Expected Result (as in TB24)

  b) don't create a new empty recipient row
  c) As a consequence, as there's no other (empty or filled) row widget after
the just-filled row widget, move focus to the next widget, which happens to be
Subject box.

  Issue #2:

  STR
  1 compose new msg
2 in exactly the last empty recipient row (with set recipient type), type a
searchword which triggers at least one autocomplete suggestion: e.g. [To:
][searchword autocomplete suggestion]
  3 press shift+tab

  Actual Result (TB31)

  a) focus moves away from the current recipient row immediately
  b) a new empty recipient row is created
  c) the just-added recipient row gets focus

  Expected Result (as in TB24)

  b) no new recipient row is created
  c) jump to the 'To:' combo box (i.e., the previous widget, rather than the
next widget)

Thunderbird: high CPU usage from progress bars

Status in Mozilla Thunderbird Mail and News:
  Confirmed
Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

When sending a simple and short email with Thunderbird via SMTP the
CPU is used intensively. This seems not to be necessary. If the
sending failed and an corresponding error message dialog appears, the
CPU is still being used. When pressing ok to close the error dialog
the CPU is fine. This suggests it might be related specifically to the
progress bar. Such behavior is especially annoying on a laptop where
you can hear the CPU usage because of a starting fan.

Title:
thunderbird-3.0: Please turn off global search by default

Status in Mozilla Thunderbird Mail and News:
  Won't Fix
Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: thunderbird

  Hi,

the new major version of Thunderbird (3.x) provides the new feature
Global Search which allows to search over all mailboxes that are managed
with Thunderbird. While this feature can be neat and handy for the
average home user with small mailboxes, it very soon becomes a major
drawback for users with large mailboxes or with Thunderbird installations
in corporate networks. With large mailboxes or corporate networks
it becomes obvious that downloading the whole mailbox which is necessary
for the global search will very quickly eat up all the space. I have
around 50,000 emails in one of my IMAP mailboxes and by downloading
all mails, Thunderbird 3.0 ended up taking several gigabytes of diskspace
  in the home directory.

However, since this IMAP server resides in the same local network
as my machine, downloading all mails does not bring any improvements
in speed which would justify the waste of space. In corporate networks,
it is also often the case that users have limited quota and a Thunderbird
installation which uses alot of space in the home directory can easily
result in the users not being able to login anymore (because they
have exceeded their quota and no more files can be written
  upon login as required).

I therefore suggest turning *off* global search and downloading of
emails from mailboxes by default. It might be neat to have a
check box to enable/disable Global Search in the setup dialog
of Thunderbird which allows to enter your mail account data.

  Adrian

Title:
Firefox does not allow users to change the default search engine,
unless the search bar is present

Status in The Mozilla Firefox Browser:
  Confirmed
Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: firefox

Steps to reproduce (on Ubuntu Lucid):

  1. Start with a clean Firefox profile

  2. Notice the default search provider is Yahoo in the search box (just
to the right of the address bar)

  3. Select some text on a page, right click on the selection and notice
the item Search Yahoo for YourText

  4. Set the search provider to Google in the search box from the drop-
  down menu

  5. Select some text on a page, right click on the selection and notice
the item Search Google for YourText

  6. Go to View - Toolbars - Customize and drag the search box out of
the toolbar into the customization window

  7. Select some text on a page, right click on the selection and notice
the item Search Yahoo for YourText (should be Google still)

  8. Go to View - Toolbars - Customize and drag the search box into
your toolbar, to the right of the address bar

  9. Notice Google is selected as default search provider

  10. Select some text on a page, right click on the selection and
notice the item Search Google for YourText

This is due to Firefox using the user-set engine when the search bar
is present, but using the default engine (which cannot be changed by
the user), when the search bar is removed.

  Ubuntu 10.04 (Firefox 3.6)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 20765]

2013-02-14 Thread Mike Conley
There's been no activity, nor more useful information added to this bug.
I'm going to mark it RESOLVED INVALID.

For now, if you are continuing to experience performance problems, I'd
suggest using the Gecko Profiler add-on, collecting a profile, sharing
the profile, and then pasting a link to your uploaded profile either in
this bug, or a new bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 872639] Re: Cannot open book: Could not create DesktopcouchSession object

2011-10-14 Thread Mike Conley
The alert suppression was released as part of EDS Contacts Integration
0.3.8. I believe this should be available shortly via the update-
manager.

This will not solve the DesktopCouch problem, but it'll certainly ease
the pain of it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 871472] Re: Thunderbird call some unwanted ubuntu-one access from addon EDS Contact Integration

2011-10-11 Thread Mike Conley
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 863150 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/863150

Hey Marco, Michael,

This sounds a lot like https://bugs.launchpad.net/thunderbird-eds-
extension/+bug/863150, which got fixed in 0.3.7a. That should
(hopefully!) be released shortly. This will let you cancel out of those
authentication prompts, and it won't bother you again for the rest of
your session

In the meantime, yes, disabling the add-on via safe-mode is a good
workaround.

Thanks,

-Mike

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 743096] Re: contacts only sync with evolution not with thunderbird

2011-09-08 Thread Mike Conley
The EDS Contacts Integration add-on that comes bundled with Thunderbird
in Oneiric will allow you to access the contacts that are stored in the
EDS backend.

Since the Ubuntu One contacts are stored in EDS, this should allow you
to use Thunderbird to read/write to your Ubuntu One contacts. However,
I believe desktop-couch is a little bit broken in Oneiric. Once that
fix lands, I believe the Ubuntu One contacts will become available.

That was always the plan, anyhow. ;)
