2014-01-06 Thread Nik.Th.
I've got this problem as well today. Of course the affected package is
older version(1.2.2-1ubuntu2) than "fix released"
version(1.2.2-1ubuntu3), but as a workaround you can use the "dpkg
--force-overwrite --install" command.

Bug description:
This is fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS. Fully updated.

I recently moved the /var/cache directory to tmpfs for my own reasons.
According to FHS [1] the /var/cache contents should be deletable. Also
according to an accepted answer on askubuntu.com [2] there should be
no problem on deleting the contents of /var/cache directory.

  Reproduce:

Move /var/cache to tmpfs via /etc/fstab by adding the following line

reboot your system and try to open ubuntu software center.

  What I expected to happen:

ubuntu software center recreates the folders/files that are needed in

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1255428] Re: LCD brightness control keys and widget do not work on Intel Graphics on Saucy

2013-11-27 Thread Nik.Th.
Probably apport expects the /etc/apt/sources.list file to exist. I would
suggest to create one and try again.
Also it would be a good idea to open a new bug about this behavior of apport
and see what developers have to say.

Best Regards
NikTh

Title:
LCD brightness control keys and widget do not work on Intel Graphics
  on Saucy

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After upgrading to Saucy, on my Lenovo IdeaPad Z570 with Intel HD
Graphics 3000, it is no longer possible to control the LCD brightness
using the hardware brightness control keys. Likewise for the KDE power
management settings or the battery icon on my Kubuntu Plasma tray. (I
don't use GNOME/Unity.) Until Raring I did not have this problem.

There is a workaround available from
  http://askubuntu.com/questions/362894/changing-the-brightness-stopped-
working-in-13-10-saucy-salamander i.e. doing the following command on
  a terminal:

  echo 150 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

where 150 is on the scale of 0 to whatever is given within
  /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness.

Based on this I wrote a GUI which however needs to be run using
  sudo/kdesudo/gksudo. I have attached it.

Bug #1241745 also relates to the same problem on Saucy but apparently
relates to an NVidia driver and I was asked to track this as a
  separate bug

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1255428] Re: LCD brightness control keys and widget do not work on Intel Graphics on Saucy

2013-11-27 Thread Nik.Th.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1255428

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

This is a known problem. Please see here on how to debugging blacklight:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight

Your slider works for me also :-)

Here is a thread on ubuntuforums.org . See another workaround related to ACPI
events.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1255310] Re: after attempt to open ubuntu software center it shuts down in 3-4 seconds

2013-11-26 Thread Nik.Th.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better.
Please update your system with the following commands in a terminal
(CTRL+ALT+T):

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Then reboot.

If the problem resolved, let us know.

If the problem persists, then open a terminal and start software center
with the following command:

software-center --debug

it will print useful debugging information.

Attach a separate .txt file with the output.

Best Regards
NikTh

2013-11-26 Thread Nik.Th.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

About the
Fontconfig error: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/65-khmer.conf", line 14: out of memory

This simlink is disabled by default in Kubuntu 13.10. A workaround on
this problem should be

sudo chmod 644 /etc/fonts/conf.d/65-khmer.conf

NikTh

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1254912] Re: [Satellite L500, Realtek ALC272, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2013-11-25 Thread Nik.Th.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Next time that audio fails, try to restart pulseaudio
with the following command

pulseaudio -k

If that command restores that audio, then see on how to gather a pluseaudio log
that may help.

I've found another bug report for the same hardware as yours, but seems
without a progress . bug #1053161

2013-11-25 Thread Nik.Th.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Could you please try with another profile ?
Maybe your profile has been corrupted.

Open Firefox from the terminal with the following command

firefox -ProfileManager

Create a new profile and test it from there.

If it works, then you should think to reset your firefox. Help →

Title:
Searching Social messages from home lens only shows only avatar icons
instead of actual messages in saucy

Status in “unity-lens-friends” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Searching Social messages from home lens only shows avatar icons (even
for non-avatar-name search term) instead of actual message. As a
result, there no is way to differentiate among similar messages by
looking at only avatar icons (twitter in this example).

However searching from social lens itself (unity-lens-friends) works
  fine.

This is not how home lens behaves for all other lens-es for example,
when a music is searched by file name relevant results appear
regardless whether it is searched from home lens or music lens
  itself.

I am using twitter in friends app in saucy.

I have attached a screenshot to visualize.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1254515] Re: fglrx (not installed): fglrx kernel module failed to build

2013-11-24 Thread Nik.Th.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug.
AMD/ATI has decided to drop the support for Linux on cards 2xxx-4xxx. This is
why you couldn't find clear instructions on how to install the fglrx driver.

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_catalyst_legacy2&num=1

Ubuntu (and Linux in general) cannot do anything about that.

In case you want to use the fglrx driver , I would suggest to stick in a
version of Ubuntu which xserver-xorg-core package is under 1.12 version. (e.g
Ubuntu 12.04.1)
or
you can use radeon driver which is included in Ubuntu and is enabled by
default.

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 13.10 x86_64
  Evolution 3.8.4

I just installed evolution and added google calendar in it. It started
showing reminders of all past events after downloading the calendar.
It shows reminder for each and every past event instead of showing
only upcoming events as per appropriate time.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Add google calendar in evolution.

  Expected result:
Calendar should be added and event reminders should come as and when upcoming
events approach.

  Actual result:
Shows reminders of all past events immediately. Putting lot of load on system.

Bug description:
On my laptop (acer aspire one V5-131) which uses Ubuntu 13.04, the
change of the brightness settings have no effect on the brightness in

When I press the shortcut for changing the brightness (Fn+Left &
Fn+Right), the notification of the new brightness level is correctly
displayed but again it has no effect on the brightness of the screen
(and it neither update the level in the settings application).

Please, see in the attached file (Brightness.txt) what I do for
changing the brightness on my computer from the console.

I don't know anything about the settings software stack but since it
works from the console I don't think it is a driver problem but rather
a software problem somewhere or maybe a missing symlink. Though the
keyboard shortcut are not working properly, the problem could also be
  below gnome-control-center.

Bug description:
  ***
The old PPA, ppa:attente/1218322 is superceded by the following one. You can
remove the old repository using ppa-purge.
  ***

A PPA which should provide some relief for this issue is available at
  https://launchpad.net/~attente/+archive/modifier-only-input-switch. To
  install:

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:attente/modifier-only-input-switch
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get upgrade
  (log out, log in)

If the packages improve the situation for you, you can pin them using:

  sudo apt-mark hold compiz
  sudo apt-mark hold gnome-settings-daemon
  sudo apt-mark hold unity

If the packages don't work for you, you can purge them using:

  sudo ppa-purge ppa:attente/modifier-only-input-switch

  === compiz ===

Impact: modifier-only key bindings need to be independent of key-press
order, there's no support for double tapping two modifier keys of the
  same type

  Test case:
  - add at least two input sources through gnome-control-center's text entry
settings
  - use gsettings to set the input switching shortcut to ctrl+left shift:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-input-source
"['Shift_L']"
  - holding left shift, press and release ctrl
-> the current input source should change

Regression potential: possible, but highly unlikely, that some key
bindings may be triggered due to the removal of some code that would
normally prevent a possible tap from occurring.

  === unity ===

Impact: gnome-settings-daemon eats modifier-only shortcuts preventing
them from propagating down to applications

  Test case:
  - open gnome-control-center's text input settings
  - set the next input source key binding to ctrl+left shift
  - open gnome-terminal
  - press ctrl+shift+t
  -> gnome-terminal should open a new tab

Regression potential: the additional input switch key bindings could
collide with other functionality such as opening the dash or hud

  === gnome-control-center ===

Impact: the UI to change the layout switching keys doesn't work

  Test case:
  - open gnome-control-center's text input settings
  - click on the "next layout key" entry
  - try entering a key combinaison (e.g ctrl-space)
-> the UI should reflect the new keys

Regression potential: that UI was not working before, it should only
be an improvement (some key combos are not working as expected, that's
another issue and shouldn't be mixed with this one)

  === gnome-settings-daemon ===

Impact: attempting to change keyboard layouts using only modifier keys
  doesn't work

  Test case:
  - add at least two input sources through gnome-control-center's text entry
settings
  - use gsettings to set the input switching shortcut to ctrl+left shift:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-input-source
"['Shift_L']"
  - press and release ctrl+left shift
-> the current input source should change

Regression potential: The input switching shortcut might capture other
non-modifier shortcuts, but users will need to consider this when
choosing their switching shortcut anyways. For users this bug affects,
this represents a working solution for a critical bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1254092] Re: Touchpad not recognised on Acer Aspire 5720 after upgrade to 13.10

2013-11-22 Thread Nik.Th.
You will wait for a developer to examine the logs you've attached in
order to determine if this report is a bug or not. For any additional
information you should provide or action you should take, you will be
notified.

The "confirmed" status was a mistake(sorry about that).

Best Regards
 NikTh

Title:
Touchpad not recognised on Acer Aspire 5720 after upgrade to 13.10

Status in “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
After upgrading from ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 the touchpad on my Acer
Aspire 5720 laptop is no longer recognised by the kernel.

  Running xinput I get:

  ⎡ Virtual core pointerid=2[master pointer (3)]

  ⎜ ↳ ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse id=12 [slave pointer

↳ ENE eHome Infrared Remote Receiver id=14 [slave
keyboard (3)]

System Settings > Mouse & Touchpad only shows settings for mice (no touchpad
settings present).

Using Google I see various other reports of the same problem on
different laptops and the consensus is that it is a problem with the
  kernel NOT with synaptics.

***The Acer Aspire 5720 has three physical buttons below the
touchpad*** - Left, Right, and a middle 4-way button, which has
previously always worked for scrolling up/down/left/right. Only up
and down works but it only "scrolls" up or down one line at a time (no
continuous scrolling by holding the up/down button down).

I have managed to get a partial fix by adding "options psmouse
proto=imps" to /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf and then running:

  sudo modprobe -r psmouse
  sudo modprobe psmouse

That gets the physical middle button scrolling up/down working
correctly but still no left/right scroll and no way to turn off
touchpad tap to click (Grrr! Grrr! and thrice Grrr!)

  Help!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1254106] Re: "browse files" on device does nothing

2013-11-22 Thread Nik.Th.
If the bluetooth is working and recognizes your phone, then probably
this bug should be reported against nautilus (browsing files via
bluetooth.)

** Package changed: bluez (Ubuntu) => nautilus (Ubuntu)

Title:
"browse files" on device does nothing

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I click on the Bluetooth icon on the top-right corner of the screen next to
the battery icon
My mobile phone is listed in the drop down. I select it and I click on
"Browse files"

Expected: a Nautilus window should appear showing the browsable
contents of the device. Maybe the device should prompt me whether to
  allow browsing before

Observed: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING happens. The computer doesn't even try to
connect to the phone. Nothing happens on the phone, nothing happens on
the computer; no error message is shown anywhere, it's just as if I
  had done nothing.

I've done an hcidump while trying this, and it's empty.

This HAD WORKED BEFORE on the same machine and with the same device.

Touchpad not recognised on Acer Aspire 5720 after upgrade to 13.10

Status in “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
After upgrading from ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 the touchpad on my Acer
Aspire 5720 laptop is no longer recognised by the kernel.

  Running xinput I get:

  Help!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1213837] Re: I cannot select an Xsession after logout from Lubuntu Saucy Daily

2013-09-17 Thread Nik.Th.
Oh Yeah ! :-)

This bug has been resolved.

Thank you @Simon Steinbeiß.
We are now able to select Xsessions and/or Languages without a problem.

Although the logout process is still buggy ? but this has nothing to do
with the bug here. When I say buggy I mean it has a delay time more than
usual.

I will mark this as Fix Released.

Thank you again.

What I've found (and maybe help developers) is that if I login and
logout from the Guest Account, the Icons (both "change session" and
"change language") are fully responsive.

Maybe something with user settings ?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1213837] Re: I cannot select an Xsession after logout from Lubuntu Saucy Daily

2013-08-19 Thread Nik.Th.
If I restart LightDM, then I can select a session.
By this I can understand that the "change session" icon works only the first
time. Something is happening when you login and from that time onwards the
icon becomes unresponsive.
You must restart LightDM in order to somehow "reset" it and icon becomes
responsive again.

Neither the language icon works. But I don't know if we can mark this bug as a
duplicate of

The additional problem here is that I cannot select another Session.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1213354] Re: Add bookmark to Ubuntu Forums in Firefox default

2013-08-17 Thread Nik.Th.
Currently we have too many official support pages in Ubuntu. (in
general)

Read this thread here → http://ubuntu-discourse.org/t/will-you-intend-
to-remove-some-ubuntu-support-pages/734

We have to pick the most important and include them to bookmarks. This
is not a major problem or maybe is not a bug at all because every user
has its own bookmarks. Also with Sync Firefox feature he/she can have
his/her bookmarks everywhere.

This seems to me more like an "Opinion" instead of a bug.

Regards
 NikTh

Add bookmark to Ubuntu Forums in Firefox default

Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When a new Firefox profile is created in Saucy, it includes a list of "Ubuntu
and Free Software links" by default. That
list includes a link to Launchpad but not to the Ubuntu Forums. Launchpad is
for bugs not for getting help and there is nothing directly where users can get
help, beginner or otherwise. Adding a link to the Forums would help the very
new users find online help.

The default bookmarks list of "Ubuntu and Free Software links" should
include a link to Ubuntu Forums (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/)
  labelled as "Community Support"
