[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1769383] Re: Ubuntu dock/launcher is shown on the lock screen

2018-12-27 Thread Simon P.
It is quite concerning to see how long it takes to fix security-
sensitive bugs like this in Ubuntu.

Anyways, what I wanted to add: To kind of make it worse, after the bug
happens and after logging in, the dock is not working properly any more
- when new programs are started that were not on the launcher before,
the according symbol is not displayed in the launcher.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
When entering the lock-screen mode, gnome-shell disables all the extensions.
It can happen that under certain conditions ubuntu-dock re-enables itself,
causing the ubuntu-dock to appear in the lock-screen, exposing sensitive
information. One possible way to reproduce this is to enable dash-to-dock and
ubuntu-dock at the same time.

  [Test Case]
  1. Make sure ubuntu-dock is enabled
  2. Enable dash-to-dock too
  3. Lock the screen
  4. Make sure the dock does not appear on the lock screen
  5. Make sure there is no warning is the journal

  [Possible Regressions]
Even if it's something we don't really support please make sure that you can
use dash-to-dock without uninstalling ubuntu-dock.

  [Original Bug]

After an update from ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 the dock is aviable on the
lockscreen after user login.
I did not configure this knowingly. Also i can start every application which
is available on the dock.
Settings, virtual box, visualstudio code and so on.

After the update to 18.04 i just configure the screen frequency to
144Hz and the night mode on. And attach the dock on bottom.

I later undid these customizations back to configuration before, but
the dock is stil aviable on lockscreen.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1769383] Re: Ubuntu dock/launcher is shown on the lock screen

2018-10-24 Thread Simon P.
I am experiencing this issue too since the upgrade to 18.10. Sometimes
in addition to the launcher I can even see an open program! Cannot use
the program interface though before going to the unlock screen by
pressing super + l and unlocking the system.

I have gnome-tweaks installed, used it only to activate the Yaru theme
which was not working after the upgrade (bug 1798984). So I guess that
doesn't qualify as play with it.

Whan I expect to happen: When playing a video in vlc and switching to
fullscreen mode everything should work fine. Also when changing to a
different position of a movie in fullscreen I expect the player to
  just switch to that position.

What actually happens: It seems to depend a little on the file type of
the video, mostly I get problems when going to fullscreen mode and
then switching to a different position with the playback position bar.
With some videos it was even enough to just open the fullscreen mode.
The video freezes just displaying a frame while the audio keeps
playing. The computer does not react any more to mouse or keyboard
input, I have to perform a hard reboot.

This problem only appears under the Wayland session, in the Xorg session
everything works fine as expected.

  2) Search for a song. Doublecklick it to play it.
--> Rhythmbox will crash. Open rhythmbox again, it works without crashing now.
  3) Close rhythmbox with the Ctrl + Q command. Start over at 1), bug appears
again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1768258] Re: Intermittend black screen - after login on bootup

I am experiencing the same problem with 18.04. After a failed login
attempt and the subsequent login, the green stays black and only the
mouse cursor is shown.

Intermittend black screen - after login on bootup

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hello,

I'm experiencing intermittent dekstop environment loading issues with gnome
3.28. After logging in on the Session greeter, it loads for a few seconds and
no desktop appears just a grey/black backround, nothings gonna happen.
First I just done Alt-Print-REISUB to recover, but I found out switching
console Ctrl-Alt-F3 and back to Ctrl-Alt-F1 brings me back to the login screen
and I can do another login which resolved the issue for me everytime it
happened.
I think it is going to hapen every 10-20st boot.
  I'll attach a few logs.

Additionally I've got to tell I manually installed NVIDIA 390.42 after
  upgrading to 18.04 beta.

  Best regards

  Kitsab

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1748611] Re: Desktop symbols disappear after changing symbol size in nautilus

2018-05-02 Thread Simon P.
It is not a duplicate of bug 1537606. The problem I reported is that the
icons disappear on the desktop when they are placed at the right side
of the desktop and the icon size is increased. I don't see the
correlation of the icon size of nautilus and the desktop as a problem,
the problem is that the icons disappear! That bug first appeared with
the introduction of the Gnome shell in 17.10.

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 1537606
Changing icon sizes causes desktop icon sizes to change too

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1720901] Re: VLC under Wayland causes system freezes in fullscreen mode

2018-01-22 Thread Simon P.
I don't understand why that bug was marked as fixed when the standard
vlc package in Ubuntu is obviously not fixed and still causing those
crashes and bothering users. And I really don't see the point for
opening a new bug report for the same old problem, so I just changed the
status of this bug.

Side note: In the current snap package of vlc 3.0.0-rc7 those crashes
are not happening any more. As there are other minor issues in that snap
(like no disabling of screen timeout while video playback), that is not
a perfect workaround yet for users who prefer vlc.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1740700] [NEW] rhythmbox keeps playing music after closing

2017-12-31 Thread Simon P.
Public bug reported:

I am on 17.10 now but I also experienced the following behaviour all
recent Ubuntu versions.

What I expect to happen: After closing Rhythmbox by pressing "x" in the menu
bar, the program should really close and music should stop playing.

What actually happens: Rhythmbox keeps running in the background. To
finally stop the music I have to press pause in the Gnome shell addon
(17.10) or press the audio button in the top panel and pause the music
there (17.04 and prior versions).

I know that this a "feature" rather than a real bug. However, this behaviour
very counterintuitive - all other programs (included in Ubuntu by default)
close on "x". Plus it does not even have any benefit on usability- we have that
neat dock to park programs that run in the background.

Therefore I see no reason that Rhythmbox should in this regard behave
different and I would call it a bug in user experience. I think it
should be changed, at least in future Ubuntu versions.

settings I cannot reproduce those crashes.

Title:
VLC under Wayland causes system freezes in fullscreen mode

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in vlc package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in vlc package in Debian:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
Ubuntu version: 17.10 (most recent updates as of October 3rd)
  vlc version: 2.2.6-6

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1725457] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV in gtk_tree_view_get_column()

2017-10-23 Thread Simon P.
No, I do not filter the view of my music library. And yes, on my system
I can reproduce the bug:

1) Open Rythmbox
2) Add a song from the music library to the queue
3) Go to the queue and click on the song that was just added to play it.

Normally Rhythmbox will crash now. If not, repeat steps 2 and 3.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1722487] Re: Failing to open some pictures - Improper call to JPEG library in state 200

2017-10-11 Thread Simon P.
It usually happens when I am switching between the photos in eog and going back
and forth. I have not really worked out a logic behind the error yet, but it
seems to happen more with some photos than others. Once I get the error, I can
just jump to the next picture and go back and it opens without problems.
I am attaching a few of the photos that failed to be displayed in eog
frequently.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1720901] Re: VLC under Wayland causes system freezes in fullscreen mode

  New
Status in wayland package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Ubuntu version: 17.10 (most recent updates as of October 3rd)
  vlc version: 2.2.6-6

I have the same problem sometimes with my mobile broadband. Using a
Huawei ME908s WWAN card under Ubuntu 15.10. Joosts workaround doesn't
work for me though as I seem to only e able to use a connection that was
created with the "add mobile broadband connection" wizard.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1127444] Re: AltGr triggers email address selection from the contacts autocomplete suggestion list

2016-01-19 Thread Simon P.
This bug is still annoying me on Ubuntu 15.10 with Thunderbird 38.4.0.
German keyboard layout here, where the @ can be obtained by Alt Gr + q

Title:
AltGr triggers email address selection from the contacts autocomplete
  suggestion list

Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I'm using Thunderbird 17.0.2 (17.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1) on
Ubuntu 12.04.2 (with latest updates) with a French Keyboard,
configured with default layout called "Français (variante)".

If I start composing a new message, and type some letters in the recipient
address zone, Thunderbird suggests some email addresses from my contacts.
If I don't want to use one of these suggestions, I will have to type the @
symbol at some point.
On a French keyboard, the @ symbol can be obtained with AltGr key and "à" key
: you have to press AltGr, then press à, and then release both keys.

The problem is that, as soon as you press AltGr, Thunderbird selects the
first email address of his suggestions, and fills the recipient input field
with it.
If you don't see it, you end up with a @ symbol at the end of the suggested
email address.

The workarounds I found are :
  - type quicker than Thunderbird suggests. If you're very fast, it can do the
trick
  - copy/paste the email address from somewhere else (or at least the @ symbol)

I have this same behavior on 2 different computers : one with Ubuntu x86 and,
the other one with x64. Both under Unity 3D with Intel graphics card.
After some searching, I found an old bug on Thunderbird that triggered this
exact issue : https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=464914 . But it's
been fixed in 2009.

It's very annoying because the @ symbol is mandatory in any email
  address...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1511012] [NEW] System freezes when connecting to a different Wlan while downloading with Transmission

2015-10-28 Thread Simon P.
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu 14.04.3 and Transmission version 2.82-1.1ubuntu3.1.

How to reproduce the bug on my system:

1) I start Transmission and start downloading some torrent files
2) I click on the Wlan symbol in the panel and try to connect to another Wlan

What I expect to happen:
My device connects to another Wlan network, the torrent download pauses for a
moment and then continues.

What happens instead:
My system freezes and I have to do a hard reboot by pressing the power button

** Affects: transmission (Ubuntu)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2014-09-06 Thread Simon P.
I am affected by this problem too, running Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit.

"dirty files" seem to cause this problem on 64 bit systems. I solved it
on my system by decreasing the dirty files cache. This article explains
it in detail: http://lonesysadmin.net/2013/12/22/better-linux-disk-
caching-performance-vm-dirty_ratio/

Title:
"Videos" is a very confusing name for a video player

Status in One Hundred Papercuts:
  Triaged
Status in Totem Movie Player:
  Invalid
Status in “totem” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Ubuntu Ringtail daily 20130128

  1. Right-click on a video file in the file manager.
  2. After opening the file, choose "Help" > "About".

  What you see:
  1. "Open With Videos"
  2. "Videos" "Videos" "Totem Website".

  What's wrong with this:
  1. Open a video with videos? That doesn't make any sense. I have a Videos
folder, but this video is not in that folder.
  2. The window is titled "About Videos", but doesn't tell me anything about
videos. And then a wild Totem appears.

This is a regression: In Ubuntu 12.10 and earlier, the program was
called "Movie Player", which was pretty accurate.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1064474] Re: Firefox high cpu usage

2012-11-21 Thread Simon P.
I suffer from the high CPU-usage of firefox too, especially when using my
netbook. This is the least responsive and slowest firefox experience under
Ubuntu for me so far.
Sometimes while loading a page, firefox freezes for a few seconds, the page
gets grey and I can see the desktop background where the address bar was before.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 874660] Re: Two finger scrolling works poorly - utouch to blame

2012-03-28 Thread Simon P.
Have troubles with two-finger scrolling as well. Besides the not-so-
smooth scrolling experience, evince often randomly zooms out instead of
scrolling down.

Ubuntu 11.10
evince package 3.2.1-0ubuntu2.2 0
Asus EEE PC 1000H

Title:
Two finger scrolling works poorly - utouch to blame

Status in “evince” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Release: Ubuntu 11.10
  Package ver: 3.2.0-0ubuntu1
Expected behavior: When two-fingered scrolling is enabled, a two-finger drag
should smoothly scroll the document
Actual behavior: The view jumps to the end-point without scrolling.

Additional info: Input device is a BCM5974 on an Apple Macbook Air
3.1. Behavior returns to normal when I download the source package
and rebuild without the libgrip patch, so it's definitely a bug in the
interaction with the utouch stack. Other multitouch (libgrip/geis)
gestures (pinch-to-zoom, twist-to-rotate) work just fine. Switching
the touchpad to edge-scrolling works fine.
