[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1905414] [NEW] Choosing Headset in Select Audio Device doesn't set input device

2020-11-24 Thread bmaupin
Public bug reported:

I'm suffering from a series of audio bugs so I'll try my best to
explain.

Out of the box, the output device in GNOME setting is listed as Kaby
Lake something or other. It works in 20.04 but the headset microphone
isn't detected.

In 18.04 the audio didn't work at all, which required me to use this
workaround in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-oem-osp1/+bug/1864061:

options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0

The headset microphone still doesn't seem to be detected, but at least
the output device has a more understandable name ("Headphones - Built-in
Audio").

Yesterday I ran across this workaround in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
from https://askubuntu.com/a/1233446/18665:

options snd-hda-intel model=alc233-eapd

Now I get a popup every time I plug in my headset, which allows me to
choose whether or not I plugged in headphones or a headset. Great!
Unfortunately, even if I explicitly choose Headset, the input device is
not set to the microphone of my headset.

Thankfully the microphone of my headset is detected in the Gnome sound
settings, so my workflow looks like this:

1. Plug in headset
2. When popup shows click Sound Settings
3. Manually set Input Device to Headset Microphone - Built-in Audio

The primary difference between headphones and a headset, so I would
expect that if I click Headset, the Gnome Input Device would be set to
my headset's microphone. I can't see any other reason why the system
would ask me which I'd plugged in. Am I missing something?

In the meantime I'll try yet another workaround such as
https://askubuntu.com/a/1229519/18665

Thanks!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1470235] Re: PolicyKit high memory usage

2018-10-09 Thread bmaupin
For what it's worth, I don't seem to have had this issue after upgrading
to Ubuntu 16.04. I recently just upgraded to 18.04 so I'll continue to
keep an eye on things.

In response to other comments, I never used Multi-Core System Monitor
but I've used indicator-multiload ("System Load Indicator") the last 5+
years.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 801229] Re: xorg GPU freezing

2013-09-04 Thread bmaupin
Is there any way I can request this bug to be closed? It's for a version
of Ubuntu that's no longer supported (10.10), and I didn't have this
problem in 10.04 LTS or 12.04 LTS.

  xorg GPU freezing

Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Using ubuntu 10.10, intel i7 quad core, Radeon HD 3450. Xorg freezes
  pretty regularly. Keyboard and mouse completely stop responding. The
  screen gets corrupted with weird color patterns (I'll attach a
  screenshot).

  Xorg uses 100% CPU. Only a kill -9 will kill the process.

  I can't remember when it started. First it would do it once a week or
  so. Then it got gradually more frequent. Now it does it several
  times a day. I have noticed it to be more frequent when I'm using
  Wine or Crossover Wine, but this particular time I didn't have Wine
  open. I was using Chrome, Remmina, Terminal, and File Browser.

  Most recently I disabled the desktop effects (I guess that disables
  compiz) thinking the problem would go away, but it hasn't.

  The only thing I can do with the system at this point is a hard power
  off.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1220764] [NEW] Rhythmbox does not add VBR headers when ripping CDs to MP3

2013-09-04 Thread bmaupin
Public bug reported:

When ripping CDs to MP3 using Rhythmbox, by default they are VBR,
because this is the default preset that is used in
/usr/share/gstreamer-0.10/presets/GstLameMP3Enc.prs (cbr=false). The
problem is that the VBR headers aren't added to the MP3 files, for
example:

$ mp3val 01\ -\ Gregory\ Alan\ Isakov\ -\ Dandelion\ Wine.mp3
Analyzing file "01 - Gregory Alan Isakov - Dandelion Wine.mp3"...
WARNING: "/home/bmaupin/Desktop/Gregory Alan Isakov/This Empty Northern
Hemisphere/01 - Gregory Alan Isakov - Dandelion Wine.mp3": VBR detected, but no
VBR header is present. Seeking may not work properly.
INFO: "/home/bmaupin/Desktop/Gregory Alan Isakov/This Empty Northern
Hemisphere/01 - Gregory Alan Isakov - Dandelion Wine.mp3": 9559 MPEG frames
(MPEG 1 Layer III), +ID3v2, no VBR header
Done!

This causes most programs to report incorrect track lengths, including
Rhythmbox itself and Ubuntu's default Nautilus file manager. This seems
to be a huge oversight considering this is the default behavior using
the default apps. I'm not sure when this started because I only use the
LTS versions of Ubuntu, but I know it wasn't a problem in 10.04, because
it was using a gstreamer pipeline with xingmux as opposed to gstreamer
presets, which from what I understand don't support xingmux (which I
believe adds the VBR headers).

I currently have to fix any MP3s that I generate with Rhythmbox like so:

sudo apt-get install vbrfix
cd /path/to/mp3s
find . -type f -iname '*.mp3' -exec vbrfix {} {} \;
rm vbrfix.log vbrfix.tmp

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1220764] Re: Rhythmbox does not add VBR headers when ripping CDs to MP3

2013-09-05 Thread bmaupin
Bug 945987 is related, which is why I mentioned it in this bug. But I
don't believe it's the same; it seems to me that 945987 is referring to
the inability to change encoding settings from the GUI. But it doesn't
deal specifically with the problem that VBR headers aren't added to MP3.

This problem is mentioned in the comments for that bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/945987/comments/28),
but I couldn't find a separate bug report submitted for it.

aptitude install eclipse)
  2. use metacity window manager (System --> Preferences --> Appearance -->
Visual Effects --> None --> Close)
  3. open a file in eclipse where the text is wider than the window
  4. drag the horizontal scrollbar to the right, and then back to the left. do
it a bunch of times for a more dramatic effect
  5. the text will be all messed up (see attached screenshot)

  So I've filed this bug with Gnome's Bugzilla here:
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=631680

  Here's the text from the Bugzilla bug report:

  Since Empathy has replaced Pidgin as the default chat client for
  Ubuntu, it'd be great to have a "buddy pounce" feature, since Pidgin
  had one. It allows you to flag a contact and be notified when that
  contact is available for chat, so you can move on to something else
  and not have to worry about checking every few minutes whether that
  contact is online.

  Here's what it looks like in Pidgin:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1220764] Re: Rhythmbox does not add VBR headers when ripping CDs to MP3

2014-07-21 Thread bmaupin
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected trusty

** Description changed:

  When ripping CDs to MP3 using Rhythmbox, by default they are VBR,
  because this is the default preset that is used in
  /usr/share/gstreamer-0.10/presets/GstLameMP3Enc.prs (cbr=false). The
  problem is that the VBR headers aren't added to the MP3 files, for
  example:

  $ mp3val 01\ -\ Gregory\ Alan\ Isakov\ -\ Dandelion\ Wine.mp3

  When ripping CDs to MP3 using Rhythmbox, by default they are VBR,
  because this is the default preset that is used in
  /usr/share/gstreamer-0.10/presets/GstLameMP3Enc.prs (cbr=false). The
  problem is that the VBR headers aren't added to the MP3 files, for
  example:

  $ mp3val 01\ -\ Gregory\ Alan\ Isakov\ -\ Dandelion\ Wine.mp3
  Analyzing file "01 - Gregory Alan Isakov - Dandelion Wine.mp3"...
  WARNING: "/home/bmaupin/Desktop/Gregory Alan Isakov/This Empty Northern
Hemisphere/01 - Gregory Alan Isakov - Dandelion Wine.mp3": VBR detected, but no
VBR header is present. Seeking may not work properly.
  INFO: "/home/bmaupin/Desktop/Gregory Alan Isakov/This Empty Northern
Hemisphere/01 - Gregory Alan Isakov - Dandelion Wine.mp3": 9559 MPEG frames
(MPEG 1 Layer III), +ID3v2, no VBR header
  Done!

  This causes most programs to report incorrect track lengths, including
  Rhythmbox itself and Ubuntu's default Nautilus file manager. This
  seems to be a huge oversight considering this is the default behavior
  using the default apps. I'm not sure when this started because I only
  use the LTS versions of Ubuntu, but I know it wasn't a problem in
  10.04, because it was using a gstreamer pipeline with xingmux as
  opposed to gstreamer presets, which from what I understand don't
  support xingmu

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1424491] Re: apt-get fails to install fglrx or fglrx-updates in 14.04.2 and 12.04.5

2015-03-20 Thread bmaupin
The easiest way to fix this without installing extra packages (like
cheese), is:

1. Downgrade the parts of the enablement stack that caused the problem

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends xserver-xorg libgl1-mesa-glx
libegl1-mesa-drivers

2. (Optional) Clean up extra packages

sudo apt-get autoremove

3. Install fglrx

sudo apt-get install fglrx

4. Reboot.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1439478] Re: Copy and Paste not Working in 15.04

2015-08-12 Thread bmaupin
For anyone using the remmina-next PPA, I also had to manually upgrade
the libfreerdp-plugins-standard package; for some reason the
dependencies weren't properly set and the drive sharing wasn't working
due to a missing library:

[10:00:37:014] [18886:2095822592] [ERROR][com.winpr.library] -
LoadLibraryA: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/freerdp/libdrive-client.so:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

To fix, make sure you upgrade the libfreerdp-plugins-standard package as
well:

sudo apt-get install libfreerdp-plugins-standard

The full instructions:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:remmina-ppa-team/remmina-next
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libfreerdp-plugins-standard remmina remmina-plugin-rdp

Title:
  Copy and Paste not Working in 15.04

Status in remmina:
  New
Status in remmina package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Remmina is probably one of the top 3 Linux applications "I need
  working right" to efficiently complete my work day.

  So, I consider it a critical bug that "copy and pasting" between
  "local and remote desktops" is not working in the 15.04 beta 2.

  This is one of those things, where if this is not fixed, I will have
  to return to Ubuntu 14.04, or figure out a way to install a version of
  Remmina that actually works correctly in 15.04.

  This bug has reared its ugly head before:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/remmina/+bug/937522

  However, the status of that bug seems to be practically closed, so
  that's the reason for this new posting. I want to do all I can to get
  this bug the attention it needs. Remmina is crucial for my work.

  I'm currently dealing with the fact that it crashes a few times a day,
  but this "copy and paste not working" is a real deal-breaker for me to
  stay on 15.04.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1364078] Re: Cannot set screen resolution above 1400x1050

2015-09-10 Thread bmaupin
I had the same problem after switching from the xserver-xorg-video-ati
driver to fglrx and then back to xserver-xorg-video-ati after
experiencing a memory leak:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1354350

The problem was the fglrx package installs this file:

/etc/modprobe.d/fglrx-core.conf

Which includes this line:

blacklist radeon

Which blacklists the open source radeon driver. I removed
/etc/modprobe.d/fglrx-core.conf, rebooted, and my problem was fixed.
xrandr was able to see all available resolutions as well as it was able
to see multiple monitors.

I looked into those dbus messages and didn't find anything helpful. My

Here's my current workaround:

sudo sh -c 'echo "#!/bin/bash

sudo chmod +x /etc/cron.daily/kill-polkitd

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1470235] [NEW] PolicyKit high memory usage

2015-06-30 Thread bmaupin
Public bug reported:

Periodically I install updates on my computer and reboot without logging
in. When I come back to my computer and log in, polkitd is using a large
chunk of memory. At the moment it's using > 2.3 GiB of memory on a
machine with 8 GB RAM:

$ ps aux | grep polkit
root  1229  0.4 29.8 2652532 2420916 ? Sl   Jun19  67:38
/usr/lib/policykit-1/polkitd --no-debug

Killing the process frees the memory until I reboot again.

I'm currently using the latest version of policykit-1:

$ apt-file search /usr/lib/policykit-1/polkitd

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1470235] Re: PolicyKit high memory usage

2015-07-06 Thread bmaupin
A couple more data points:

Last week, I rebooted my machine and logged in right away. polkitd was
only using 7 MB of memory:

$ ps aux | grep polkitd | grep -v grep
root  1219  0.1  0.0 281164  7244 ?Sl   16:36   0:00
/usr/lib/policykit-1/polkitd --no-debug

Two days later, polkitd was using only marginally more memory:

$ uptime
 17:08:55 up 2 days, 32 min,  2 users,  load average: 1.42, 0.78, 0.37
$ ps aux | grep polkitd | grep -v grep

/usr/lib/policykit-1/polkitd --no-debug

On Friday, I installed updates and then rebooted without logging in.
This morning, before logging in, polkitd was already using nearly 1 GB
of memory:

$ uptime
 09:09:38 up 3 days, 15:57,  1 user,  load average: 0.06, 0.05, 0.05

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1470235] Re: PolicyKit high memory usage

2015-07-07 Thread bmaupin
As I mentioned in my last comment, yesterday I logged into my computer
after it had been up for 3 days at the login screen. Upon logging in,
polkitd was using nearly 1 GB of memory:

$ uptime
 09:09:38 up 3 days, 15:57, 1 user, load average: 0.06, 0.05, 0.05
$ ps aux | grep polkitd | grep -v grep
root 1034 0.4 11.2 1137788 912732 ? Sl Jul02 23:23 /usr/lib/policykit-1/polkitd
--no-debug
$ date
Mon Jul 6 09:11:17 EDT 2015

After nearly 8 hours of being logged in, polkitd memory usage had barely
gone up:

$ date; uptime; ps aux | grep polkitd | grep -v grep
Mon Jul  6 17:04:42 EDT 2015
 17:04:42 up 3 days, 23:52,  4 users,  load average: 0.36, 0.25, 0.26
root  1034  0.4 11.2 1148092 913328 ?  Sl   Jul02  23:24
/usr/lib/policykit-1/polkitd --no-debug

Then I added some commands to /etc/rc.local to log polkitd memory usage
as well as output from dbus-monitor --system, rebooted my machine, and
left it at the login prompt. I checked it this morning, after about 16
hours of being left at the login prompt. The output log from dbus-
monitor --system was over 100 MB and nearly entirely full of messages
like this, with new messages being constantly added:

signal sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> dest=(null destination) serial=44
path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus;
member=NameOwnerChanged
   string ":1.252082"
   string ":1.252082"
   string ""
signal sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> dest=(null destination) serial=45
path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus;
member=NameOwnerChanged
   string ":1.252083"
   string ""
   string ":1.252083"
signal sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> dest=(null destination) serial=46

   string ":1.252083"

   string ":1.252084"

member=NameOwnerChanged
   string ":1.252084"
   string ":1.252084"
   string ""

The polkitd memory usage seems to have increased about 10 MB every hour:
