[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1737750] Re: nvidia-graphics-drivers fail to build [error: implicit declaration of function ‘init_timer’]

2018-11-24 Thread jfrantzius
... but do not upgrade to Ubuntu 18.10, as its XServer comes with a new
ABI version that nvidia-304 refuses to work with, and ignoring ABI
incompatibility screws up the display (at least with my Geforce Go
7600). I guess this won't be possible to patch without NVidia themselves
releasing a new version of the driver (which they won't).

So, alas, with the above patch, 18.04 finally seems to be the last
version you will be able to run nvidia-304 with.

2018-11-24 Thread jfrantzius
@Andy Dufresne (adufray): thank you very much for the great description
of how to apply Seth's patch, and of course, thank you very much Seth
Forshee for providing the patch!

For anybody else so far left in the dust with a deceased nvidia-304
driver: rejoice, and just follow the perfectly working instructions in
https://adufray.com/blog/2018/06/02/nvidia-304-127-on-bionic to save
your computer from becoming electrical waste.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1737750] Re: nvidia-graphics-drivers-304 304.137-0ubuntu2 ADT test failure with linux 4.15.0-1.2

2018-05-10 Thread jfrantzius
Could some friendly soul provide instructions on how to apply the patch
from comment #2 ?

Or are there any chances it will be applied in a way that the
proprietary driver manager will find the (patched) 304.137 driver again?

(the alleged patch on if-not-true-then-false seems to be something
entirely different. I downloaded the patched driver there, and it fails
with same 3 error messages)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1318249] [NEW] Failure to resume from hybrid suspend

2014-05-10 Thread jfrantzius
Public bug reported:

I followed http://askubuntu.com/questions/145443/how-do-i-use-pm-
suspend-hybrid-by-default-instead-of-pm-suspend/145676#145676 to set up
hybrid suspend, creating the file /etc/pm/config.d/00-use-suspend-hybrid
with the following contents:

-- snip ---
HIBERNATE_MODE=platform

# Always use hibernate instead of suspend, but with suspend to both
if [ $METHOD = suspend ]; then
  METHOD=hibernate
  HIBERNATE_MODE=suspend
fi

# Make sure to use the kernel's method, in case uswsusp is installed etc.
SLEEP_MODULE=kernel
-- snip --

On suspend, the system writes an image to disk (according to
/var/log/syslog) and goes to sleep on RAM as expected. However, on
resume things first seem to proceed normally, but the screen is never
lit up. I couldn't find any obvious errors in /var/log/syslog.

The behaviour is similar with the Indirect hybrid sleep approach,
which used to work successfully before upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04.

Both suspend-to-RAM and suspend-to-disk (hibernate) work and resume
sucessfully, i.e. when removing the file /etc/pm/config.d/00-use-
suspend-hybrid.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1119442] Re: No sound capturing possible - only noise - no hardware issue

2013-03-13 Thread jfrantzius
I see (and hear) similar symptoms as well on Kubuntu 12.10 + KDE 4.10.1,
but in contrast to what was reported in comment#2, I don't see
extraordinary levels in pavucontrol.

Audio recording did work well before KDE 4.10. PulseAudio version is

  usb, …). I recorded my screen so you can see what's happening:

  http://youtu.be/4YM3oDcl7K4

  I record sound using Audacity, so you can see the noise. Then I use
  KMix and the Audiosettings software to change several configuration
  settings.

  I booted Kubuntu 12.04.1 from CD-ROM (installation disk) to check if
  it is a hardware issue, however recording works fine using the live
  system.

  Please let me know if I can provide more helpful information.
