[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1716160] Re: System goes to sleep with external monitor and lid closed after login

2017-10-30 Thread jhoechtl
@khurshid-alam Any update on that? The fix you described seems to fix
the issue of mutually incompatible settings from tweak tool "Suspend
when laptop lid is closed" and dconfs /org/gnome/settings-
daemon/plugins/power/lid-close-suspend-with-external-monitor inhibiting
proper suspend actions of Gnome 3.26 using a laptop, sometimes portable,
where it is sensible if a lid close action triggers a suspend/hibernate
and while docked/external monitor attached, where a lid close action
should not trigger any sleep state.

Bug description:
Using a laptop with lid closed and an external monitor, you can boot.
Bios will show on the external monitor, as well as gdm when boot is finished.
You can then choose a user and type in your password, which is accepted.
But then, system goes to sleep (as the lid is cloesd I guess).

Going out of sleep with the power button shows the gnome shell.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 812394] Re: Disable hibernate option by default

2013-12-08 Thread jhoechtl
@Jerome: Paddy was referring to the password when full disk encryption
is in use, not the one used to protect a user account. Normally the
pass-phrase used for full disk encryption this is an automatically
created, awkward and long phrase, hard to type in without making
mistakes, let alone memorize.

However, @Paddy, your argumentation is flawed in the sense to assume
that full disk encryption necessarily is a sane default and should be
forced on a user. True, it is an elegant excuse instead fixing bugs when
the kernel is communicating with the BIOS, UEFI or the graphics stack,
which are the most occurring reasons for failing resume from S3, S4
suspends.

I'd like to propose a change in the design of Power preferences in the
  GNOME control center: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Power

Instead of going through the certification path, we can simply
disable the options about suspend/hibernate if it's not supported on
the current hardware (we have API for this in upower).

I think this solution is more scalable, as we do not need to maintain
a database with certified hardware. Also, we can add a button or a
informative text when suspend/hibernate doesn't work to guide the
  users about what to do.

Ok, it's 2013, I have that driver and no sound via HDMI. Wow, that is
frustrating!

Bug description:
I did a fresh install of jaunty on my HP DV9812EG Notebook, but HDMI
  Audio out isn't working.

In the beginning i had ALSA Version 1.0.18 installed, which came with
Ubuntu 9.04. Even tough the lastest proprietary geforce driver
(NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.14-pkg2.run) seems to work properly, there
was no HDMI sound. Thus, I updated to the lastest Kernel 2.6.30
(official release, no RC) and ALSA 1.0.20, but it didn't change
anything. The HDMI device can't be recognized even tough it should
  be there.

ALSA 1.0.20 was configured with the following command:

  ./configure --with-cards=all --with-card-options=all --with-
  sequencer=yes  make

Under Windows Vista Everest finds the following soundcard and HD Audio
  Modem:

Conexant Cx20561 @ nVIDIA MCP65 - High Definition Audio Controller
Modem HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP

hwinfo --short under ubuntu 9.04 confirms this, but aplay -l list
only these two audio devices (it should be three at least):

  rennie@Riese:~$ aplay -l
   Liste von PLAYBACK Geräten
Karte 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], Gerät 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog]

Karte 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], Gerät 1: Conexant Digital [Conexant Digital]
Untergeordnete Geräte: 1/1
Untergeordnetes Gerät '0: subdevice #0
  rennie@Riese:~$

So what's missing is something like this:

Karte 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], Gerät 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
Untergeordnete Geräte: 1/1
Untergeordnetes Gerät '0: subdevice #0

  aplay -L shows this result:

  rennie@Riese:~$ aplay -L
  default:CARD=NVidia
  HDA NVidia, CONEXANT Analog
  Default Audio Device
  front:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
  HDA NVidia, CONEXANT Analog

  HDA NVidia, Conexant Digital
  IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output
  null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
  rennie@Riese:~$

So again there is missing something like:

  hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
  HDA NVidia, NVIDIA HDMI
  HDMI Audio Output

I even tried to go back to ALSA 1.0.19 but it is not possible to
./configure the original alsa-driver package (there was an error, but
i don't remember which). As an alternative i tried to install the
  linuxant deb-version of ALSA (alsa-driver-linuxant_1.0.20.3_all.deb)
and the realtek version (realtek-linux-audiopack-5.11) but both
  versions didn't work.

So this must be a bug, because everything else works fine (e.g. HDMI
Video out, Laptop Speakers, Ear-Plug-Audio out...)

Unfortunately, to find and eliminate the bug, I can contribute only
  with some other information:

Result of lspci | grep -i audio!:

  rennie@Riese:~$ lspci | grep -i audio

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 856776] Re: Cannot declare itself as another username with CUPS server

2013-07-04 Thread jhoechtl
I can't believe this is still in. Is CUPS unused in enterprise
environments? At our offce we identiy with an account number as to
assign printout costs to department accounts rather than individual
users. I have to set a username for printig, without identifiication,
printouts get silently ignored.

On the command line, one could print as such

   lp -U jonallard -d printer1 file.ext

How do I customize the *username* part when using the GUI printing dialogs
and the Printing system settings?

It is possible that it isn't, in fact, possible to add this username to the
Ubuntu print config. If so, where should I ask for an improvement?

Martin Owens -doctormo-@AskUbuntu suggested I add the username in the
IPP URI directly. The printer address dialog won't let me do that.

Is this a bug or is there some hidden place to put this username or
  should it be improved?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1157766] Re: CUPS web interface authentication fails in Raring

Same on Kubuntu 13.04 latest updates. Works with the GUI tools but not
with the web interface. User to add a printer is in group lp and
lpadmin.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1018069] Re: Linux Libertine Libreoffice 3.5 distorted printing

2013-02-24 Thread jhoechtl
This problem is unresolved as of February 2013. The solution to this
problem is easy: Ubutnu should include Linux Libertine G instead of
Linux Libertine O as the default package.

Title:
  Linux LibertineLibreoffice 3.5 distorted printing

Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Linux Libertine 5.1.3 and Libreoffice 3.5.x (I've tested 3.5.3 and
3.5.4) don't play well together. On screen everthing looks nice, but
on printout the distances between the letters are completly distored.
The printout is hard to read and looks ugly. I've seen this on all our
machines (at the moment 7) where Ubuntu 12.04 is installed. Printer is
  always a Brother MFC 8640N

Older Ubuntu releases e.g. 10.04 and 11.10 (with older Libreoffice,
OpenOffice and Linux Libertine, ) print as they should, as did every
  Ubuntu release in the past.

Solution is to use the Linux Libertine G variant from here
  http://www.numbertext.org/linux/index.html. Which is a 'graphite'
version of Linux Libertine. Now printings of Linuxlibertine are fine
  again.

It looks like Libreoffice 3.5.x uses the graphite engine with Linux
Libertine, regardless if the font is fittet for graphite or not.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 917266] Re: firefox Intel HD Webgl performance unusable

2013-01-17 Thread jhoechtl
I am using Kubuntu 12.10, FF 18

I get only 4 FPS on this test
http://webglsamples.googlecode.com/hg/aquarium/aquarium.html

For exact the same hardware, the tests under Windows 7 64 bit / firefox
32 bit perform constantly at least 10x faster (dual boot system)

On a five year old NVidia with considerably slower CPU it's 12 FPS under
Kubuntu 12.10, FF18

So no change here. Maybe I have to tweak settings in about:config as FF
is probing and actually disables Hardware accell?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 917266] Re: firefox Intel HD Webgl performance unusable

2013-01-17 Thread jhoechtl
Ok, after forcing FF18 to enable WebGL with
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Blocklisting/Blocked_Graphics_Drivers#How_to_force-enable_blocked_graphics_features

webgl.force-enabled=true
webgl.msaa-force=true
layers.acceleration.force-enabled=true

for the same test
http://webglsamples.googlecode.com/hg/aquarium/aquarium.html

it is now 30 fps. So for some reasons WebGL functionality seems to get
blacklisted in FF. However it seems to work realiably and stable.

On Windows it's still 40FPS but now difference is much smaller to
previously 4 FPS on Linux.

Bug description:
  [Problem]
Logging out of a second user session results in a black screen with blinking
cursor, until you manually switch to vt7. Might also be caused when screen is
locked because of inactivity.

  [Impact]
Frequency of occurrence may be about 1 in 4. Not a hardware-specific
problem, so can be encountered by most users.

  [Development Fix]
Adding a VT_WAITACTIVE after the VT_ACTIVATE ioctl helps reduce the chance of
a race condition between LightDM, the kernel, ConsoleKit, and X, but is not a
complete solution. This change was introduced to Precise as of version
1.1.2-0ubuntu1 on Feb 10th.

  [Stable Fix]
The development change was not a complete fix. Thus the change is not valid
for SRUing.

  [Text Case]
  1. Have a multi-user system
  2. Start up and log in as a user
  3. Use the User Menu to switch to another user
  4. You will be at the Unity Greeter, log in as the second user
  5. The second user session will load
  6. Choose Log Out from the power/setting menu
  7. You will be at the Unity Greeter
  8. select and enter the password for the logged in user
  Broken Behavior:
The screen turns black and shows a blinking cursor
Manually switching to VT7 shows the first user session, and works fine

  Fixed Behavior:
Automatically returned to VT7 after entering the password for the first user

  [Regression Potential]
fill me in with a discussion of likelihood and potential severity of
regressions and how users could get inadvertently affected.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 898986] Re: Printing does not work on Samsung CLP-610ND

2012-12-23 Thread jhoechtl
For immediate help: I use Samsung CLP610 and 620 reliably since 2+ years
with this solution:

http://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/

No problem whatsoever.

Bug description:
I added a Samsung CLP-610ND via the gui and it auto-picked a driver
that doesn't work (foo2qpdl). The printer machinery hums but no paper
  comes out.

Using cups I changed the driver to the enigmatically named 2.0.0
(en) which is actually the splix driver and the native language of
the printer. However no print jobs come out as this driver needs CMS
  files installed.

SpliX Cannot open CMS file /usr/share/cups/profiles/samsung/CLP-
  610cms (2)

This need for CMS files is mandatory and mentioned in the INSTALL file
  for splix.

All this is a mess - no driver as shipped with the system works as is.

What is required to get this into mainstream and nail it down forever?
(Or is upstream = mainstream = vanilla linux kernel maintained by
Linus?)

Title:
[Thinkpad R61i/T61] Lenovo sound chip Conexant CX20549 Venice doesn't
  work correctly.

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Computer: IBM Lenovo Thinkpad R61i
  Card: HDA Intel
  Sound chip: Conexant CX20549 (Venice)
Device: 00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family)
HD Audio Controller [8086:284b] (rev 03)
   Subsystem: Lenovo ThinkPad T61 [17aa:20ac]
  System: Ubuntu Oneiric 11.10 (desktop-i386)
  Kernel: 3.0.0-12-generic-pae#20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 16:37:17 UTC 2011

  Problems:
  1) Integrated microphone doesn't work at all because the driver uses node
0x14 instead of 0x15 for integrated mic and node 0x12 instead of 0x14 for
external mic.
  2) Sound output is muted in the 0% - unamplified part of the volume
slider and is working in the unamplified - 100% - part only; the driver
doesn't allow amplified part because sound is distorted over 0dB of the PCM
level so there is no need amplified part of the volume slider.

Solution: Attached patch is fixing nodes of integrated and external
microphone and is removing the amplified part of the volume slider.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1040037] Re: Libreoffice will no longer print landscape page

2012-12-03 Thread jhoechtl
I installed stock cups-filters (1.0.24-2ubuntu0.1) quantal-proposed and
landscape-printing now works in libreoffice without the Postscript-level
workaround as well as in other applications using the cups pdf printing
stack. Great!

Bug description:
Since update yesterday, landscape pages print as portrait printing to
a Brother DCP 135C. Print preview shows a landscape layout, but output
from printer always comes out as a portrait page. The problem did not
occur two days ago, and does not occur when printing from other
  applications (eg pdf viewer).

WORKAROUND: Export the file as a pdf and print that using the pdf
  viewer.

  [IMPACT]

Landscape-formatted documents from LibreOffice get printed rotated and
cut off on all printers using Ghostscript's built-in drivers
(pxlmono, ljet4, hl1250, ...), perhaps also with other drivers.

  [TESTCASE]

Print the attached file test.pdf via

  lp test.pdf

on a printer using one of Ghostscript's built-in drivers (not CUPS
Raster). Result is the content being rotated by 90 degrees and the
rightmost portion of the content cut off. The same job comes out
correctly when the proposed package is installed.

  [Regression Potential]

Patch is simple, there should be no regressions.
