[Desktop-packages] [Bug 808106] Re: Shortcut for changing tabs should be Ctrl-PgDn/PgUp

2013-06-26 Thread markba
I don't understand. In the upstream bug report it is stated that Ctrl-
Alt-PgUp/PgDn is part op GTK. I tested it and indeed it works with both
gedit and nautilus. However, nautilus does also have Ctrl-PgUp/PgDn. Is
that part of GTK also or is it a specific implementation of nautilus?
And: if it's part of GTK, how come gedit does not have that behaviour?

Shortcut for changing tabs should be Ctrl-PgDn/PgUp

Status in Light-Weight Text Editor for Gnome:
  Invalid
Status in “gedit” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
Right now, the shortcut for changing tabs is Alt-number, where
number is the tab id, from left to right, so 1, 2 etc. But in several
other applications like Nautilus, Firefox, Chromium, gnome-terminal
the shortcut is Ctrl-PgDn (=select tab on the right) and Ctrl-PgUp
(=select tab on the left). This inconsitency is breaking the workflow.

  Candidate for 100 papercuts?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1185186] [NEW] Content of sidepanel does not stay the same when toggling

2013-05-28 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When the sidepanel is on when the editor starts, the content is correct,
showing maps and folders of the opened file. But when switched off en on

that the panel re-appears with the same data as before.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 905497] Re: gvfs should auto reconnect when disconnected

Sometimes even the refresh-action does not re-activate the connection.
Then you have to actively do a dis-connect en re-connect.

Bug description:
When a connection is made to a remote server through, for example ftp,
in many cases the host disconnects when there is no activity during a
timeout. This is not a particular problem is Nautilus, because then a
  reconnect will take place.

However, when a file is opened on the remote server (for example a
text file opened by gedit) and when a disconnect has taken place,
saving the file results in an error. gvfs should detect this situation
  and automatically reconnect.

Woraround for this situation: navigate with Nautilus to the remote
connection, press F5 for refresh and the connection is re-established.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1157473] [NEW] Switching to another open libre-office document by menu 'Windows' is not consistent

2013-03-19 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

In the menu bar, there is an item 'Windows'. In there the current open
documents from Libre-office reside so the user can switch back and forth
between documents.

Scenario of two documents opened in succession: the Windows-menu of the
second created document contains all open documents, so a user can
swithh back. The problem is this: the *first* document is not populated
with any succeeding documents (windows); so once a user has returned to
the first document, he cannot go back to the second one by the menu-
item.

Using libre-ofice 4.0.1.2 .1.2.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 873191] Re: Ubuntu starts with lowest brightness on HP G62[regression]

2012-09-22 Thread markba
My hardware:

Intel: $ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)

ATI: $ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan [Mobility
Radeon HD 5000 Series]

Strange thing is that the model with ATI reports 2 different cards, and
that in a laptop, how curious. The ATI-model differs slightly from the
one smola has in #14.

I have both installed with 10.04 and they work just fine. My hope is
that there is a solution before 10.04 gets obsolete (2013).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 873191] Re: Ubuntu starts with lowest brightness on HP G62[regression]

2012-09-18 Thread markba
By sheer coincidence (what are the odds?), I happen to have 2 optically
identical HP G62's, one with a Intel-card and one equipped with ATI.
Both suffer from the same brightness problem, very weird indeed. The
remark of Ian at #10 might be correct: maybe the drivers are mixed up,
in a way neither of the gfx's work.

As I happen to have both machines at the same time (they are from people
who asks me to put Ubuntu on it), I can do tests on both machines, which
could help in solving this bug. I'm looking forward to any suggestion. I
post the exact specs later, when I have them on hand.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 964339] Re: Can't Connect to MSN

2012-09-16 Thread markba
Please upgrade to a recent version first (stable 3.4 series or unstable 3.5
series) - 3.3.92 is an old unstable development version.
A I indicated before, I'm using a stable version 3.4.2.3 (stock Ubuntu 12.04),
*not* a development version; so as far I can see, that would be OK.

And what is the source of the assumption that I'm using 3.3.93? Is that
from the attached log file? In that case, version numbering in that file
is wrong I guess.

I've tried #16

There is no /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf:
/etc/lightdm$ ls
lightdm.conf unity-greeter.conf users.conf

Adding a line show-language-selector=true to unity-greeter.conf (as an
alterative to unity-gtk-greeter.conf) does not work.

How do we activate the language selector?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 386081] Re: No visual indication upon choosing another WiFi network

2012-03-31 Thread markba
I guess this has been solved already. When you disconnect from a network
by choosing another network, the name of the new network appears in the
dropdown-list, just above 'Disconnect'. And because you can see by
the flickering icon that the connection has not been made, you have all
the elements in which you can determine the network status (name +
connection status).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 910063] [NEW] Window of EOG does not has focus when opened from Nautilus

2011-12-30 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When an image is opened from Nautilus, thus starting the the standard
image viewer, EOG, this window does not has the immediate focus. A user
has to click into the window to move the focus to EOG.

This problem is especially cumbersome when EOG is opened maximized: a
user can not see that the global menu which is unhidden when moving the
mouse to the title bar, is *not* the menu of EOG (it is the menu of
Nautilus...). When trying to close EOG, a user *actually* closes the
former window (= Nautilus). Because the user see nothing changing
(because a hidden window underneath is closed), he clicks another time
and only then, the EOG window is closing. The user expects to come back
to Nautilus, but he will not find it.

I don't have to explain how confusing this is.

on the launcher and less clutter.

I would like to share this info for people who also are in search for
the hidden progress window.

Bug description:
When there is an active wireless connection, and the wired connector
is connected, network manager is responding by notifying that the
wired connection is made and the icon changes from wireless to wired.
In ifconfig, a IP-address is bound to ethX.

But when trying to do any file operations (or other things), it comes
clear that the wired connection is not used, despite the icon and
notification. The wired connection can only be activated when the
wireless connecttion is forced into disconnect.

But then, the wired connection is not becoming active, only after re-
connecting the wired connection. Maybe the last problem is related to
this bug mentioned. If not, a separate bug should be filed.

When pulling the plug from, the wired connection, the wireless
connection does not becomes active automatically, like it did prior to
11.10. You have to force the wireless connection to get connected
  again.

When I compare the ip route output of 11.10 vs 11.04, two things are different:
- in the 11.04 output, there's a 'metric' statement on each line
- in the 11.04 output, there's an extra line containing the IP-address of the

This should be been mostly fixed in Oneiric now, with the latest revision of

To clarify, I guess what you mean was that wired would be connected but then
no traffic at all would pass unless the connection ? was re-established?
Correct.

Also, do you happen to know if these backups are full or incremental ones?
In my situation, it does not make a change whether it's a full or incremental
backup: as soon as the upload begins, it starts with 0 (that's logical) en
jumps to 100 when ready, no step between.

On the plus side: when doing a restore-action, (download) progress is
shown per file, so that's good.

1. The version of deja-dup and duplicity:

cloudbased targets like SSH or U1, because they are limited by a
relatively small upload bandwidth. As for now, the upload seems broken,
because a user cannot see any progress, only when it's ready.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 846270] [NEW] Cancel search with Esc would be good

2011-09-10 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When searching, the proces can only be stopped by opening the menu and
select Stop. Prior to 11.10 there was a button for this, but is was
removed. Hence, stopping the proces is very difficult.

Proposing to use Esc as a shortcut for stopping the search proces. Maybe
this shortcut can be universal for all long during actions in Nautilus
(not only for searching).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 846277] [NEW] When in list-mode, creating folders or files is not possible

2011-09-10 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When Nautilus is set to list-mode (Ctrl-2), it is not possible to create
a folder or a file. This is only possible on the white area. But when a
list is too big, there is no white area (below the list), so it is
nearly impossible to create a new folder (or file), only by creating a
new tab or nautilus window which is not very intuitive.

The good thing about list mode is that you can easily drill down in a
folder structure. This bug is the only reason why I do not go into list-
mode by default.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 846289] [NEW] Action Properties in places menu is not available, like in the breadcrumbs menu

2011-09-10 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When opening a menu on the breadcrubs, there is a Properties item
available. This one is not there when you rightclick on the Place pane
menu.

Use case: when trying to see for the free space on a device (USB-stick
or -disk), you have to click on the device in the PLaces pane, then move
to the breadcrumb in the right pane, activate the menu and choose
Properties. It is more intuitive that this particular action in
available in the Places pane menu.

It could be that there are more several actions which are inconsistent,
but this is the one I'm encountering always. From a technical POV, I
think there should be no distinction between the several menu's (one
menu for all), thus providing optimal consistency.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 846320] [NEW] Wired connection does not take preference over wireless (regression 11.10)

2011-09-10 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When there is an active wireless connection, and the wired connector is
connected, network manager is responding by notifying that the wired
connection is made and the icon changes from wireless to wired. In
ifconfig, a IP-address is bound to ethX.
