[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1792167] Re: Display size detected incorrectly

Hi having the same issue since upgrading from 16.04 to 18.04. My LG 34"

2560x1080@21:9. xrandr attached

Status in qtbase-opensource-src package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
My external monitor is detected as 7" although it is 32". All
applications which use Qt auto scaling have huge controls!

It seems like many users have the same problem
  (https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2390362) and thus disable
Qt auto scaling. I think the solution should be to fix the size
  detection instead.

It seems not related to the display server, compositor or window
manager since the problem appeared in Ubuntu 17.04 (Mir, Unity) as
well es 18.04 (Mutter, Gnome). I tried it with both Wayland and X (on
  Wayland).

Further, it seems not related to graphics driver, since I personally
use the open source driver with my internal Intel card, whereas
someone else uses a proprietary Nvidia driver
  (https://askubuntu.com/q/1066879/206608).

If it is in the wrong category, please move it / add the corresponding
  packages.

If you need any further information to tackle the problem, just tell me!

Title:
  Display size detected incorrectly

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in qtbase-opensource-src package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Someone has to rewrite/redesign most of Emapthy's chatroom manager. I don't
have time doing it atm.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-05-22 Thread psypher
I suggested the exact same thing due to this other bug:
New windows are moved to front but don't take focus
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/781931/comments/31

TOO MUCH CLICKING!

Apps and menus should follow mouse over focus. Will fix many issues.

I use fullscreen apps a lot. This is how I would prefer it:

Default:
Fullscreen apps should always show global menus. Do not hide.
Minimized apps should have the menus locally integrated, less distance to
travel to get to menu!

Optional:
Hide global menus
non-locally integrated menus on minimized apps
The highest foreground app must by default grab focus
Any app you move your mouse over must get Menu focus, don't bring to
foreground though! interacting with the focused app will bring it to
foreground, like keyboard input.

Love unity and all the features. But the focus and global menu thing is a bit
annoying. Some refinement needed.

Bug description:
Global menu in general (not only in Unity) is very unergonomic on
large screens (see the attached screenshot) because if you have a
small window somewhere near the low right corner you have to move the
cursor all the way up to to panel to reach the menu. I understand why
the global menu was used for the netbook edition (it saves space and
most windows are maximized), but since Unity is intended to be for the
desktop edition there should be an option to switch to the traditional
position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by many desktop users.

  A commonly suggested solution is:
   [ ] Global Menu on
   [ ] Global Menu off
[ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows
The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only
for maximized windows).

  -
  Desired change:

Implement the 'Enhanced Menu' project for 12.10. This project will
address the issue described in this bug and also issues described in
the duplicates of this bus. Note this is the 'official' bug that
tracks the implementation of this project.

The following options will be added to 'System Settings/Appearance':

  ---
  Menus
  Location:Global/Local
  Visibility: Hidden/Always displayed
  ---

More details to follow during the 12.10 cycle... ;-)

This issue is half fixed. Please see my attached video. The issues seen
only happens when i first expand the list view my keys, collapse it and
try search for something. When I move my mouse over the list you can see
how they randomly unhide and hide. Does not happen when i expand first
and then search.

When you see blurred keys those are my actual keys blurred for privacy

Any update on this bug. I have upgraded to beta 2 and still occurring. I

Bug description:
  PROBLEM

If you right-click on a selected file or group of selected files in
Nautilus, the selection will appear to clear out while the right-click
menu is up. This makes it appear as though right-clicking deselected
the file(s). Left-clicking elsewhere to dismiss the right-click menu
will show that they're still selected, and selecting Copy or Cut works
  as normal.

  HOW TO REPRODUCE

  1. Select a file or group of files.
  2. Right-click on them.

  EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

Files will still appear to be selected when a right-click context menu

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 912446] Re: Allow an independent context menu

2012-03-30 Thread psypher
I get why you would have contextually relevant menus, not a bad feature. But I
would like to suggest that a simple compromise be this:
if you have selected files, while holding ctrl or shift and right click
anywhere in the window, then the correct menu for selected files should appear.
otherwise if you right click in any empty space that context menu appears.

It is really frustrating to loose a bunch of files selected by right
clicking on an empty space. An empty space you have been clicking on for
the last 10 years. on all kinds of OS's. it's the expected behavior.

But what i also have to say is. For a long time I have wished for the
feature that I can create a new folder or file without having scroll
down and find empty space. That I like. But please just add, if files
are selected and ctrl or shift is down, bring up copy.

  Allow an independent context menu

Status in Nautilus:

Bug description:
After yesterdays updates a right click, mostly on text files, doesn't display
complete context menu. (video)
It displays always e.g. create new file, properties, dis- and enlarge.
It randomly doesn't display e.g. rename, cut and paste.
It doesn't display mostly on text files, rarely on .ogv or .png files.

  Update:
The confusion came from a bug fix yesterday, please note Comment #2.
Due to usability issues changed the description to request an independent
context menu.
If a file name is very short, for example 'fo' or '1' a user needs to have
sufficient target skills in order to access the appropriate context menu via
right click.

  Expected:
Allow independent context menu otherwise it may be randomly lost.
Leave it up to user which action to select.
It's more confusing to miss context than to right click and have a
comprehensive selection offered.

I ran: tail -f /var/log/*.log when i logged in and used the desktop until
the setup broke and these were the only errors logged.

Where do I go from here, this has been ongoing since the day 12.04
started development and I'm worried that this is an unknown bug that is
not getting attended to. My original bug 921540 was marked as duplicate
of this bug yet none of my errors point to gsd crashing.

/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/924612 as per Sebastian at that bug.

Please could this be investigated further as this has been occurring
since 12.04 started development.

These are the errors that pop up when the setup breaks:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 924612] Re: gnome-settings-daemon SIGABRT when gnome-session goes down

2012-03-26 Thread psypher
@Sebastien

Thanks, I have updated my original bug to reflect the extra info and
that it's not a duplicate of this bug. Would you be able to confirm that
I have supplied all the required info? I would really like to get this
bug fixed asap, before stable release, as it detracts from all the hard
work being done on multi monitor setups and is quite annoying. I am a
power user of multiple monitors and having to fix the setup over and
over every day is quite frustrating.

Thanks

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 786866] Re: empathy displays network error on msn account

This issue has not re-occurred for a while. For a while it was MSN and
Gmail accounts but it seems it was related to the Online accounts
feature which has now been removed. After a while I was able to delete
the online accounts and start again. Now MSN and Gmail connects fine for
the last week

  Related issue:
on multimonitor setup, going from one monitor to the edge suffer from the
same issue (you have to push the mouse a lot, more than it felt naturally
needed). Especially when you drag a window using the trackpad.
Also, when you put your mouse on the central point slowly to go to monitor 2,
you get stuck even if you believe that the mouse is already on the monitor 2
(because there is one pixel left on monitor 1 and the whole cursor is drawn on
monitor 2)

This is on a dell Latitute XT2, with default mouse velocity option.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 940085] Re: 12.04, Compiz Wall plugin default shortcut keys are incorrect

2012-02-29 Thread psypher
FYI clicking the little restore to default icon next to the key combo in
CCSM sets it correctly back to the preferred default we all know and
love AND MISSED!

Trying to set the combo manually by doing key grabs does not work for
some reason. pressing ctrl is not registered in the capture at all, and
if you try and set it and close the app the combos don't work very well.
When i went back in again and restored the default my problem was fixed,
YAY!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 924612] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGABRT in __GI___assert_fail()

2012-02-27 Thread psypher
I experience this about once a day and it has nothing to do with the
edge. Just moving the mouse anywhere, or opening fullscreen videos.

Multimonitor setup breaks and reverts to mirror setup randomly and
  while watching youtube videos

Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
About once a day at random times my dual screen multimonitor setup
suddenly goes black and then reverts back to mirror setup. Mostly it
occurs while watching flash videos in my browser but yesterday it
happened while no videos were playing and I just tried to click on the
  messaging menu indicator applet.

This happens on Unity 3d and 2d

Using the nouveau driver, have not tried the prop nvidia drivers.
Don't really want to as I do not want to use nvidia's buggy
multimonitor setup tool. I would like to get the built in Ubuntu
display manager working right. Especially since new work is being done
to make it work really well in many different test cases

  Thanks

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 928767] Re: Since latest update Gtalk and MSN no longer will connect

2012-02-21 Thread psypher
Has the Online accounts feature been removed. I installed a fresh copy
of 12.04 and it no longer exists in the user menu or the system
settings. I have now gone and deleted my online accounts which is
still present on my 64bit machine. I have been working on this install
since 12.04 was released and added my accounts as per normal IN empathy
and now they working. I did try this the other day but made no
difference.

I suspect the online accounts feature was causing an issue hence why it
has been completely removed.

For me this bug is fixed

2012-02-21 Thread psypher
This issue is still persisting. I have tried deleting my .libreoffice
folder and reinstalling libreoffice. Still happening. Conversely a fresh
install of the daily build in virtualbox seems to be working fine, calc,
writer and impress all open fine. So what is wrong with my physical
install which has just been upgraded as updates have been coming out?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 923749] Re: New push mouse offscreen feature really difficult to get

2012-02-21 Thread psypher
As Filippos I too miss the old feature of just leaving the mouse there
for a seconds and revealing the launcher. I don't understand the need
for applying pressure, excessively moving the mouse. Is it possible to
add that back as an option in the Appearance tab

hard (the distance to push it long). This is even worse on trackpad.

  --
Note from the DX team and desired solution

There is a new bug in the newest nvidia drivers that causes launchers
on the left-most monitor to not reveal. This can be fixed by adding

  Option ConstrainCursor no

to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf until a more general fix is pushed to
distro. This breakage is caused purely by a change to the upstream
  nvidia driver.

  Desired resolution:

The desired resolution of this bug is for this option change to be
  fixed at the distro level

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 923749] Re: New push mouse offscreen feature really difficult to get

2012-02-20 Thread psypher
Would like to add that a few updates came through and set the edge stop
velocity by default to 65. This makes transitioning between multiple
monitors, smoothly, near impossible and extremely annoying. I have set
it back down to 20 which improves the response a lot.

I have also set my reveal sensitivity to High and seems ok for mouse.
But still not sensitive enough for my touchpad. So I would say the
sliders needs to be adjusted as so: The line it locks at should be in
the middle. That line it should be the default but the same sensitivity
as High is currently. The proposed High should be even more
sensitive than the current one. Then we have a high range to play with.

I have been having these issues today as well after update. Couldn't
open primary launcher no matter what i did. Adjusted my edge stop
velocity to default again and then back to 30 after a while. Problem
stopped.

Just seems like the whole feature needs work, not sure if we can lump
all the issues under one bug or should there multiple bugs? I'll be
happy to log if I must

Bug description:
About once a day at random times my dual screen multimonitor setup
suddenly goes black and then reverts back to mirror setup. Mostly it
occurs while watching flash videos in my browser but yesterday it
happened while no videos were playing and I just tried to click on the
  messaging menu indicator applet.

This happens on Unity 3d and 2d

Using the nouveau driver, have not tried the prop nvidia drivers.
Don't really want to as I do not want to use nvidia's buggy
multimonitor setup tool. I would like to get the built in Ubuntu

Oh ok, cool, well I see there is now a reveal sensitivity slider in the
appearance app (formerly user settings, formerly appearance, glad they
went back to appearance) I think is a much better way of tweaking this
for different input devices.

There is a problem when multiple selecting files with ctrl or shift and
then release and right click to bring up context menu. As soon as you
right click all your files are unselected again. Only way to process
these files is to use the panel menu. Very annoying when you have
painstakingly ctrl selected files to copy or move and then you right
click and everything un-selects.

This is regression, never had this issue in Ubuntu before.

Thanks

Confirmed, thunderbird and firefox are using the new pop-up menu themes
and the panels and tabs fonts are readable again.

BTW I REALLY like the new pop-up menu colour scheme!! Just looks slick.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 923749] Re: New push mouse offscreen feature really difficult to get

2012-02-07 Thread psypher
I agree with Mossroy 100%. My first impressions too. After using it for
a while I kinda get it. But I have to say transitioning between multiple
desktops is really annoying, a movement from left to right just keeps
getting stuck in the middle. despite understanding the requirement to be
able to position the mouse on a scroll bar or to unhide the other
monitors launcher. Need to find some other solution or fairer settings.

What was exactly fixed int the committed fix above?

  In unity 5.2 RC1:
  - revealing the launcher by putting mouse on the edge and pushing seems very
hard (the distance to push it long). This is even worse on trackpad.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 921540] Re: Multimonitor setup breaks and reverts to mirror setup randomly and while watching youtube videos

2012-02-06 Thread psypher
HI thanks for the response.

In fact today when it happened a pop-up came up saying it was compiz
that crashed. I could not report that crash as I had issue with missing
packages. I have installed the pkgs now and hopefully next time I can
report it.

The indicator applet issue seem to have been fixed in a recent update,
at this time, after compiz crash, my indicator is working fine.

  while watching youtube videos

  Thanks

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 926726] [NEW] Unity greeter no longer shows user backgrounds, worked 2 weeks ago

2012-02-04 Thread psypher
Public bug reported:

Since a couple of weeks ago an update caused unity greeter to stop
showing my user desktop background at the lightdm login. I have set the
oneiric ocelot origami background so as I understand only pictures in
the /usr/share/backgrounds or ~/Pictures folders works.

Could this be due to me running Unity 5.2? Or should this be working for
all versions of Unity on 12.04.

Thanks

Bug description:
This is something which used to happen regularly though not always (I
switched to using fallback mode for a while because of it).
Basically, drop-down menus in Firefox such as RSS feeds (or in Natty
without the global menu the normal application menus were affected
too) are simply not shown when clicked on. Context menus also fail to
appear. This often disappeared for no apparent reason after I had
used Firefox for a while. I haven't seen it for a while, but it has
just re-appeared, possibly because I started Unity as unity
--replace since I am currently testing an application's behaviour
  with different window managers.

I'm sorry if this information is a bit threadbare. Please let me know

Bug description:
  In unity 5.2 RC1:
  - revealing the launcher by putting mouse on the edge and pushing seems very
hard (the distance to push it long). This is even worse on trackpad.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 923749] Re: New push mouse offscreen feature really difficult to get

2012-02-01 Thread psypher
If I move my mouse from left primary screen to right secondary screen,
please could the edge stop velocity be 0 when going in that direction.
only when moving from right to left on the secondary screen should the
mouse get stuck and then require more pressure to open the launcher.
There is no need to try and lock my mouse when moving from left to
right. It gets very tiring trying to jiggle the mouse loose all the
time.

Bug description:

hard (the distance to push it long). This is even worse on trackpad.

  Issue still present in Oneiric.

In Karmic, Lucid Maverick, the text ~does not~ wrap when typing text
in a chat window. Instead, the window grows.

This has been noticed in both IRC and XMPP (Jabber), possibly others.
It would be nice if the text wrapped. :-)

  POSSIBLE WORKAROUNDS:

  * Resizing the contact list to a big enough size to prevent the expansion.
  * Text wrap may work if the room contact list is disabled (uncheck
Conversation Show contactlist).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 723862] Re: Nautilus quicklist does not contain the locations previously found under the 'Places' menu.

2012-01-17 Thread psypher
There are some other inconsistencies as well.

1. If nautilus is open in the background behind another app, clicking a
QLBM (quicklist bookmark) opens and browses to that bookmark in the
background nautilus but does not bring the window to the foreground.
This is intermittent, sometimes the window is brought to foreground,
sometimes not. Sometimes it happens when nautilus is already open.
Sometimes it browses to the folder, sometimes it opens a whole new
window and browses to it. really struggling to consistently reproduce,
seems to happen at random.

2. With an open nautilus window, in foreground when you try clicking the
home folder QLBM, nothing happens. But then trying to click any other
QLBM after that suddenly a new nautilus window opens focusing on home
folder. Do the same for when nautilus is in the background, it just
brings the window to the foreground but does not open home folder.

3. Sometimes the QLBM's don't work at all and causes a nautilus crash.
Click bookmark and nothing happens, click another bookmark nothing
happens. Click home folder QLBM or just the home folder icon in launcher
and then it opens, or nothing will happen for a second and then nautilus
crashes. This too is intermittent, struggling to reproduce consistently.

Will play around some more and report back tomorrow

Description: The right clicking on the Nautilus icon in the Launcher
should open a quicklist that lists the bookmarks and locations
displayed as Nautilus 'Places'. These locations used to be displayed
in the 'Places' menu bar menu, and are still displayed inside Nautilus
in the left hand 'Places' sidebar.

  Desired resolution:
The Nautilus Launcher quicklist should list all the bookmarks displayed
inside Nautilus in the 'Places' sidebar. This list needs to be dynamic, so
that if user changes their bookmark, their new bookmarks are reflected in the
quicklist. In addition, a 'Open a new window' option should be added to the
top of the quicklist.

The quicklist should be formatted as follows:

  ---
  Open a new window
  -
  [nautilus bookmark]
  [nautilus bookmark]
  [nautilus bookmark]
  [nautilus bookmark]
  [nautilus bookmark]
  [nautilus bookmark]

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 209513] Re: After upgrade, Update standard folders to current language threatens to rename your home folder

2011-11-15 Thread psypher
This bug just occurred to me on oneiric, it's been how long since Lucid?
Still not assigned? This started happening to me when I created a new
user and switched to that new user using fast user switching

Please can it be attended to or better explained in the error box.

Thanks

Title:
After upgrade, Update standard folders to current language threatens
  to rename your home folder

Status in “xdg-user-dirs” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Occurs during:
  * Ubuntu Gutsy upgrade to Hardy beta
  * Ubuntu 8.04.1 routine updates
  * Ubuntu 8.04.1 upgrade to Intrepid beta

  After upgrading, this dialog appears:

Update standard folders to current language?

You have logged in in a new language. You can automatically update
the names of some standard folders in your home folder to match this
language. The update would change the following folders:

Current folder name: New folder name:

 /home/jamie /home/jamie/Videos

Note that existing content will not be moved.

WTF? (My home directory _is_ /home/jamie). What is this trying to
do? Will it rename my home directory? Or is it just updating default
directory where Nautilus searches? Or where downloaded files are
saved?? (There's no Help button, btw.)

The only sane thing is to say No, thanks (i.e. Keep old names).
Perhaps that's the wrong answer, but the dialog text isn't clear about
what this change does, so I'd be foolish to say yes.

Either (1) this shouldn't appear and show those paths, it's a bug, or
  (2) this dialog is correct, but the text should be better at saying
that it's safe and merely changes default paths of no great
  consequence.
