[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1583303] Re: Laptop not going to suspend when lid closed

2016-09-08 Thread rjb
I have to add, that at least since BIOS F.68 and updated Ubuntu, I have not
seen the problem since some time.
I can't say if it was resolved by the BIOS update or the Ubuntu updates.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1583303] Re: Laptop not going to suspend when lid closed

2016-08-17 Thread Travis Geis
I can confirm that this bug also affects Linux Mint 18, which is based
on the 16.04 packages. I'm running it on a ThinkPad T420, which uses the
NVS4200M graphics chipset. It's set up as an Optimus graphics card, but
I have disabled Optimus in the BIOS and forced the use of the dedicated
GPU.

I'm using the same build of nouveau:

xserver-xorg-video-nouveau:
  Installed: 1:1.0.12-1build2
  Candidate: 1:1.0.12-1build2
  Version table:
 *** 1:1.0.12-1build2 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I can also confirm that switching to nvidia-361 allows the laptop to
suspend on lid close for me.

Using nouveau with Linux Mint 17.3 also caused this issue for me, though
I don't have the details of that install on-hand. I do still have the
drive on which it is installed if I need to get info on that.

I'm happy to provide any additional information.

rjb, if it now shows F.67, then it took. Hence:
1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an
apport-collect):
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
2) Please test suspend and advise to the results.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1583303] Re: Laptop not going to suspend when lid closed

2016-07-05 Thread rjb
Hi Christopher

I just tried updating the BIOS using Windows 10 (it's a dualboot system). But
it seems the BIOS F.67A is not yet supported by Windows 10:
- There's no BIOS update available for download, if you chose Windows 10
- Tried with the BIOS update by chosing Windows 8.1 as OS. BIOS update was
successful, rebooted and after some screen blinking suddenly the BIOS recovery
started and probably flashed the previous BIOS F.66 back. When I looked at the
BIOS setup it does list W7, W8 and W8.1 but not W10 compatibility.

However, my BIOS shows now F.67 - not sure if that's true.
Will wait for HP to hopefully release something for Windows 10 and then retry
and keep you updated.

after closing the lid. When I switched back to X.Org-X-Server the problem was

2016-07-04 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
rjb, as per http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-
envy-17-j100-notebook-pc-
series/5401174/model/6879069#Z7_3054ICK0K8UDA0AQC11TA930O2 an update to
your computer's buggy, insecure, and outdated BIOS is available (F.67).
When you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate how does this improve the
situation?

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

Also, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible:
1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an
apport-collect):
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
2) Please make a comment specifically advising on if there was an improvement
or not.
3) Please mark this report Status Confirmed.

If it's not reproducible, please mark this as Invalid.

Thank you for your help.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1583303] Re: Laptop not going to suspend when lid closed

2016-07-04 Thread rjb
Dear Christopher

It's a HP ENVY 17-j188ez.
In the meantime I've noticed that the problem doesn't happen all the time,
however I've not yet found out under which circumstances it happens.

Every night I put it into sleep by closing the lid. Sometimes it works,
sometimes it doesn't. It seems like if it stops working, it won't work
at least until the next reboot (however, a reboot doesn't necessarily
solve it for the moment. It *may* work after a reboot). I was also
thinking if it may be related to updates (e.g. Kernel), because I'd say
it usually works good for a few days, maybe up to weeks and then again
there can be periods where it won't work whatever you try.
