[Desktop-packages] [Bug 998855] Re: Backspace acts as Up and not as back

2012-12-01 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Sorry, it's a bad idea to have Backspace mean two widely different
things. That's a good way to accidentally lose data.

Alt+← is the standard for "Go Back" on Linux:

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 998855] Re: Backspace acts as Up and not as back

2012-12-01 Thread Kangarooo
That can be changed couse users mostly are using commonly used
shortcuts and expecting them to work like that therefore they can use
intuitively any system. Theres not many who dont need easy usable one
click shortcuts. And they who dont need it can change to what they
need separately and inst needed global change for most users to adapt
to few users.
Many years strange and wrong things happen. Thats not an argument.
Also without argument Now many bad decisions things to Ubuntu
happening also without need of most users for Unity. Same way
backspace isnt used intuitively in Firefox and Nautilus as most users
need. Most clicks for non-text backspace clicking is for getting back
and not up. From statistics is seenable how many possible can be not
using backspace for back and also many from them also use other
systems witch has backspace as back.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 998855] Re: Backspace acts as Up and not as back

2012-12-01 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Firefox on Linux has for years by default only treated Backspace as
deleting the previous character in a text field.

Nautilus 3.6 now does the same thing. To go back in Nautilus 3.6, use
Alt+←; to go up, use Alt+↑.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 998855] Re: Backspace acts as Up and not as back

2012-12-01 Thread Kangarooo
On FF backspace goes back.
BTW why Thunar works like that also? Couse thats what people expect it to be
couse it has been like that for long time.
FF wont make backspace to work as "up folder"
Thats about linux.
We can check also other platform where is most users who would like to start
using in simply understandable way. And that way is also in all Windows Web
browsers and in Windows Nautilus/Thunar - My Computer/File Explorer. Backspace
is been default for going back for most computer users witch are using computer
for doing something easy and fast and not for learning computer and for
programms that they dont use some different shortcuts. Global commands are the
same. Where is only few ppl using programm with different shortcuts they cant
make other ppl to start doing everything different way but just their own
programm.
Heres how many have "backspace to go back" programms -
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp and heres how many use
backspace for back http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp and you
cant find more ppl then thouse who wants backspace to be back couse even Linux
users want it to be back.
Most times you already came from down folder so backspace will make back as u
think alt+up is doing. And sometimes u can use shortcuts and then using
alt+left is more then usually needed. Ussual need needs one key and ussual
needs are back from where u came from. So if now for back is needed some 2key
combo its waste of time for forwarding and going around and waste of time for
finding out about it and waste for thouse who found and use this new way couse
allways need to waste 2keypress time. So back you up.

Thank you for your bug report, there is no reason it should act as
"back" rather than "lower directory" though, if you disagree with the
behaviour you should open an upstream bug on bugzilla.gnome.org
