Re: Google Season of Docs 2019 for Apache Cassandra

2019-07-23 Thread Nate McCall
Benedict - this is totally fair ask. Initially, we wanted a wide audience
to help, but the GSoD stuff only allowed for two project contacts on the
sign up forms. Apache Airflow (the other ASF project accepted) and us both
had to do some work-arounds for how the ASF process/mail lists/etc are
setup unfortunately. The communication fell through the cracks as a result.
Probably a key example of why, although sometimes clunky, our usual process
is at least keeps folks up to date :)

(Also, thanks for the summary Rahul - that is helpful.)

Once we get everything sorted, we will get the contributor(s) subscribed
here and hopefully get them actively involved in the development process
for docs as we would any other contributor.

Cheers,
-Nate

Re: Google Season of Docs 2019 for Apache Cassandra

2019-07-23 Thread Benedict Elliott Smith
That's great, I'm really pleased to hear it. It's just been completely
invisible to the rest of the community, which is a shame - but I have no desire
to detract from the work you've done, now I know it's been going on behind the
scenes.

It would certainly help in future, I think, if you guys were to periodically -
briefly - update either dev@ or private@ on progress on these endeavours, and
probably to run any final decisions past one of these two wider groups for
endorsement, also only briefly. You're ambassadors for the community as a
whole, and while I'm sure you guys are doing great work, it's certainly
preferable to have the rest of the community at least nominally involved when
you're acting on our behalf.

To reiterate, I am really pleased to hear these things are going so well, and
am grateful for the work you're putting. I just wish we already knew this, and
that we had been more involved.

Hi Benedict,

Nate & I are driving this effort and a bunch of folks from the community have
volunteered. We're actively working with the GSoD team. We also have responded
to everyone who has reached out. Nobody was ignored.

Re: Google Season of Docs 2019 for Apache Cassandra

2019-07-23 Thread Benedict Elliott Smith
So, I think we need to figure out if anybody is actually willing to put in the
time to help and mentor these contributors, since the last person to reach out
was roundly ignored.

Who volunteered the project for this? I think they need to step up and get
involved. Right now, I don't feel comfortable picking anybody, since the
evidence is that they will have a bad time.

Hi Dinesh,

I was participant of Google summer of Code 2013 under JBoss so I can help
with this and with mentoring as I experienced it from the other side.

I wanted to add myself into that list but I can not edit that "Right
now everyone can view and edit this page if they've got the right space

Re: Google Season of Docs 2019 for Apache Cassandra

2019-03-14 Thread Dinesh Joshi
Thank you everyone for offering to help!

I have put together a confluence page detailing the program and other
information -
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CASSANDRA/Apache+Cassandra+GSoD+2019+application

If you do not have a confluence account, please create one. I think the PMCs
have the ability to give you write permissions.

Please feel free to add and modify the page. I think the most important thing
right now is to get together project ideas.

Thanks,
