Hi, The CloudStack documentation is very light on baremetal deployment.
Please can you share some documentation that we use to test and therefore merge
this enhancement and also we can then add it to the official documentation so
users can consume it..

Thanks

@ciroiriarte CloudStack orchestrates XenServers through XAPI - so how VLANs
are created is transparent to CloudStack. Are you using Basic or Advanced
networks ? Advanced networks are the generally the way to go isolate networks

Tests from xenserver failed due to an environmental issue, I'll rekick
another round once outstanding issues are resolved. Tests on kvm failed due to
corner case/env specific cleanup/setup issues. Tests on vmware are mostly
passing now.

@jburwell you need both the url fix (as the original file type was not
valid) AND the macchininia template to have the e1000 driver in it. for the
tests to work on vSphere.

Nux said that he'd have a look at it. but i haven't heard anything since.
To be honest, a strong dependency on a homebrew OS is a little concerning
to me, although I understand the potential speed improvements.

TinyCore might be more sustainable for us as a community.

@jburwell<https://github.com/jburwell> when a fresh mgmt server is deployed
for upgrading an existing CloudStack environment, several files from
/etc/cloudstack/management are copied to the new server, especially the
db.properties file. The commands.properties is no different, in the past all
such deployment (where in-place upgrades were avoided) copied all these config
files in /etc/cloudstack/management from old server to new server.

Official docs only talk about in-place upgrades, our packaging system
(post-install/upgrade scripts) assume in-place upgrade as well; if someone's
doing fresh mgmt server for upgrade, they know what they are doing and its
out-of-scope of what the project can support. At the same time, we may add
documentation for such kind of upgrades as well. The solution for this problem
is documentation and release/upgrade notes.

CLOUDSTACK-8562: DB-Backed Dynamic Role Based API Access Checker

This feature allows root administrators to define new roles and associate
API
permissions to them.

A limited form of role-based access control for the CloudStack management
server
API is provided through a properties file, commands.properties, embedded in
the
WAR distribution. Therefore, customizing API permissions requires unpacking
the
distribution and modifying this file consistently on all servers. The old
system
also does not permit the specification of additional roles.

FS:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Dynamic+Role+Based+API+Access+Checker+for+CloudStack

DB-Backed Dynamic Role Based API Access Checker for CloudStack brings
following
changes, features and use-cases:
- Moves the API access definitions from commands.properties to the mgmt
server DB
- Allows defining custom roles (such as a read-only ROOT admin) beyond the
current set of four (4) roles
- All roles will resolve to one of the four known roles types (Admin,
Resource
Admin, Domain Admin and User) which maintains this association by
requiring
all new defined roles to specify a role type.
- Allows changes to roles and API permissions per role at runtime including
additions or
removal of roles and/or modifications of permissions, without the need
  of restarting management server(s)

Upgrade/installation notes:
- The feature will be enabled by default for new installations, existing
deployments will continue to use the older static role based api access
checker
with an option to enable this feature
- During fresh installation or upgrade, the upgrade paths will add four
default
roles based on the four default role types
- For ease of migration, at the time of upgrade commands.properties will be
used
to add existing set of permissions to the default roles. cloud.account
will have a new role_id column which will be populated based on default
roles
  as well

Dynamic-roles migration tool: scripts/util/migrate-dynamicroles.py
- Allows admins to migrate to the dynamic role based checker at a future
date
- Performs a harder one-way migrate and update
- Migrates rules from existing commands.properties file into db and
deprecates it
- Enables an internal hidden switch to enable dynamic role based checker
feature

The best way to fix this would be a ping function that gets called.
However, that's not something that i can personally do and this will work

Put what repo in that org?

Based on the response received on the dev-ML thread on splitting marvin,
this PR implements the alternative to package marvin and tests as separately

@rohit is it worth putting into straight into the apachecloudstack repo
(rather than apache/cloudstack).

Subject: [apache/cloudstack] packaging: Marvin and integration-tests
packages (#1612)

This introduces two new cloudstack packages: marvin and integration-tests.
The two packages will make it easier for CI systems to install Marvin for a
specific cloudstack release/build and run integration tests that are
specific
for that version/build.

I believe Abhi is going to be looking at Marvin soon. We could maybe
consider using the vmware python libraries (https://github.com/vmware/pyvmomi)
when using Marvin to test vSphere specific code.

Github user PaulAngus commented on the pull request:

So looking at the rpm spec options using +%config(noreplace) will cause a
new version of cloudstack-catalina (cloudstack-catalina.rpmnew) to be created
if cloudstack-catalina has been edited.
However as the contents of /etc/logrotate.d/ are enumerated and run this
would result in both the new and old behaviour both being applied - which seems
the worst of all worlds.
Therefore I suggest the orginal PR (without commit
ec698f5377ad98ac2a34488a0102c45c2408d089) which will overwrite if the new rpm
has an updated value in it [1]; is the lesser of two evils.

Apologies.
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-9073 created

removal of /var/log/cloudstack-management
and addition of catalina log rotation in /etc/logrotate.d/
has been running against 4.5.1 for 2 months with no issues.

updated packaging was built against current master and (centos6 and 7)
deployed with files/directories as expected.
Left running overnight /var/log/cloudstack/management/catalina.log seen to
rotate and compress previous file.
