I think it is meant to adapt the feed to whatever browser/reader you 
use.

Me, I've upgraded my netnewswire RSS reader to the 2.0 beta to be able 
to subscribe to atom feeds like yours. It looks stable enough until 
now.
I have been using that for the last couple of weeks, it is a great 
improvement :)

I am a bit too much of a neophyte to know the difference :)
