Basically, my 'problem' is unfounded, incendiary and frankly paranoid
statements like the one above. As a guest on this Apache forum, why would
you say something like that and then expect not to get a disproving
reaction from the PMC responsible for this project?

Hi!

I agree AS4 sounds cool but I don't think it will happen.
And Swift is compiled into LLVM anyhow:

Subject: [FlexJS] Cordova Camera

Hi,

Recently, Peter put together a FlexJS app that did a relatively simple
thing: it took a picture with a device¹s camera and displayed it in the
app. What was cool about it is that it proved we can lightly wrap Apache
Cordova plug-ins and use them in FlexJS apps. Cordova looks like it can
be the platform abstraction layer for FlexJS allowing you to create mobile
apps in MXML and ActionScript that run in many more mobile devices than
just Android and IOS. The potential upside is that use of MXML and
ActionScript will make you more productive than writing code in JavaScript.

Over the last couple of days I adjusted the compiler to smooth out the
workflow a bit, improved the AS emulation of the Cordova Camera plugin and
got it working on my phone. It will be part of my presentation and demo
at the 360|Flex conference next week. There¹s still spots available if
you can get to San Jose and see it in person.

You can try it yourself if you want. It is the CordovaCameraExample in
the flex-asjs repo. We¹ll ship it in a FlexJS 0.0.2 release shortly.

-Alex

Creating mobile skins for iOS7 and Android 4+ is on my list of things to do.

It is a lot of work, but conceptually not very hard to do.

If there are more volunteers interested in this, we can do some serious

Re: Should we release 4.12?

if we're not exactly ready, we're not ready. Why the hurry if there we
are not unanimously satisfied. The previous release is doing the job is
it not?

But I still don't understand why we don't think better messaging with an
asynchronous Installer release would solve the problem regarding
confusion. I don't know if you folks remember when an Adobe Flex beta
installer wiped hard drives, but if we were to have such a problem I'm
sure we'd rush to release a new installer and announce it in a way that
folks would not be confused by it. IOW, we might someday have to release
in Installer without piggybacking on a Flex SDK or FlexJS release, so we
might as well practice our messaging to avoid the confusion.

For this 3.0 release, maybe the installer announcement can read something
like:

"Apache Flex announces the release of InstallApacheFlex 3.0, an upgrade to
the current installer that enables the Installer to not only install the
current Apache Flex SDK (Apache Flex SDK 4.12.0) but also install release
candidates and eventually releases of other Apache Flex products like
FlexJS."

And if rc6 fails, and we do release the Installer later, we should add:

"Reminder: This release of InstallApacheFlex is independent of the
release of the Apache Flex SDK. If you have upgraded to Apache Flex SDK
4.12.0, you do not need to re-install the Apache Flex SDK after upgrading
to InstallApacheFlex 3.0"

I understand that the new Installer 3.0 could benefit from the momentum
of SDK 4.12 release.
I just wouldn't want that the opposite happens:
- delaying too much the release of SDK 4.12 until Installer 3.0 is ready
- or worse: releasing too early, and having people failing to install the
new SDK because of unexpected issues in the new installer.

- I agree there is no point for a stealth release

BUT, for the reasons stated before ( Installer not linked to Flex

- if the installer still has issues in a few days then
   - then we should proceed with announcement of SDK 4.12.

Sounds like a reasonable proposition.

It does sound reasonable, but the only problem is that we will miss out
on the massive influx of visitors to the site that a Flex SDK release
brings.
Take a look at the first chart here [1] All the peaks correspond to SDK
releases.

If Installer 3.0 piggybacks with SDK 4.12, we will have a lot of folks

I think SWD is only relevant for ActionScript 1.0 and 2.0. Flash files
with debugging turned on would produce a swd file.

When debugging was toggled on in the Flash Player (and a debugging swf was
loaded), a call for the swf's swd would be made.

I just did a small test, creating a debuggable Flash file; when I compile
it for AS2.0, the swd file is generated; when targeting AS3.0, no swd file
is created.

was waiting until each swf was loading info.isPopulated() up to 80 *
250ms = ~20s to be sure the metadata of the Function infos have been
processed, from my experiements, there's no needs anymore for such a

I don't pretend to understand everything in those classes but my guesses

Now, the waiting time in FDB / IntelliJ is the same than in FB, meaning

Does someone know more about the player mechanism to populate the

I certainly will. That's the least any committer can do for the project!

On the topic of the FB template issue, I think we can afford a bump to
5.0.0; Linux support, the telemetry stuff, new components and hundreds
of bug fixes. Also, this one is something a point update won't solve.
Waiting for Adobe to fix FB would be an exercise in futility. And I
still think making most of our users work with a new project wizard
that results in a project that has a compiler error in it right from
the start is (understatement alert) foolish.

Re: Attention: another possible show stopper, please verify

2013-07-26 Thread aYo ~
Ok here's the feedback on FDT5 Linux. I did not bother with 4.10.0 as that
is not released yet. I wanted to be certain that the layout attribute was
not causing problems as it is a released version

1. With SDK 4.9.0 I get a java null pointer error - I tried to work around
this error using the FDT suggested method of changing the version in the
flex sdk configuration xml but I was not successful. Ca na marche pas :(.

2. With SDK 4.6 which I used as a control I found that the web project
would not compile with the s:Application attribute layout="absolute". If
you took that out it compiled fine. Perhaps this bug has been there a lot
longer than it seems.

Hi,

I just posted FLEX-33636 [1]: I get the error "Initializer for
'layout': values of type spark.layouts.supportClasses.LayoutBase
cannot be represented in text." on a new project using 4.10.0
(11.8/3.8) in FB 4.7. The error is linked to the 'layout="absolute"'
attribute on the s:Application tag in the MXML stub that you get when
you create a new project in FB.

Can someone please check if they can reproduce? If so, what can be going on?

Hi,

> clear leadership, this "meritocracy" thing just doesn't work.
I agree at times there tends to be a lot more talk than action and being new to
Apache we sometimes go about things the wrong way. But there have been a large
number of changes, bugs have been fixed, the SDK is faster, has more features
and is still improving. We have better international support, the SDK works on
a wider range of Flash Player versions and Linux support is shaping up well.

It has been slow going and we can always do will a bit more help. There's still
some low hanging fruit that can be fixed (see JIRA issues marked easytest or
easyfix for example). If all of the existing committers tried to fixed a bug or
contributed something every week (or month) there would be better progress. I
personally think of it like doing a cryptic crossword, it's a challenge and you
might not always finish or get it exactly right but you learn something along
the way. :-)

There are things that are certainly better than when Flex was at Adobe.
- We respond to (and fix) user issues if we can. There's always room for
improvement here but we have less resources than Adobe had and everything done
by people in their free time.
- There a focus on what what's practical and useful now rather than what's the
current hype.
- New directions and features are being explored (slowly), major changes have
happened in the JS side and that shows great promise.
- Anyone can contribute and make a difference.

What we've done poorly.
- Engaging existing contributors, business and users of the SDK to help out.
They are now the owners of the SDK.
- Communication about what been going on and where we would like to change.
- Getting new releases out.

> For the past year, Apache Flex community debated whether they should move to
> Git
IMO we moved to git for the wrong reasons (SVN was working fine and well
supported at Apache and github mirrors were in place). Apache infrastructure
took too long in making the change (which we didn't take into account), we
didn't factor in all of the build issues, and the Git model is not really in
sync with the way things are done at Apache. As a result some of the benefits
of using Git are lost. I'm not sure that people realised that when the move was
voted for. Other peoples opinion may differ form mine on that.

> to much "nerd" driven, not enough "business realistic" driven."
Businesses is more than welcome to contribute. I've only seen a few businesses
sponsor (directly or indirectly) time or effort into this project. There are
many businesses out there that use Flex and it would be in their interest if
they contributed back in some way. If that's allowing employees to work of
fixing bugs, promoting the SDK, helping out with documentation or in any other
way it would be welcome. If someone was willing to pay me one day a week to
work solely on Apache Flex I'd accept - think of it as a support contract :-)

Thanks,
Justin

I'm completely with Mike here. There is a hefty amount of work being done
there. I'm continually in awe of the work ethic and dedication to the
project. As for business realistic driven that's sometimes bosh as it's for
the most part driven by a response and thus not proactive

not. Development of those assets ceased mainly because there was a loss of
faith, we on the other hand believe in the project and are moving it on,

Re: [jira] [Created] (FLEX-33527) Get installer to work on Linux

2013-04-28 Thread aYo ~
Justin,
Is it not possible to have the full package (with dependencies) created for
Windows packaged as a zip or tar with a download link (as it used to be)?
The fact that we can create the package in Windows and it works in Linux
shows this works.
On the other hand it would mean stepping down the installer to work in the
version of AIR supported by Linux or creating a PPA so it can be installed
via Synaptic. Is this the direction you intend to follow?

Re: Apache Flex Running in Linux .. (;

2013-04-28 Thread aYo ~
Justin, you have made the crucial point 'parity with the Win player and
AIR'. The issue is Adobe support or I guess the lack of it. So long as
there is a freeze on Linux support player and run-time. Its really not
properly supported. I suppose it can be supported with a caveat. I have
unfortunately had to stop doing any AS/Flex development on Linux. There
have been so many advancements to AIR and the player that to stick with
Linux did not seem to me a sensible choice.

ps:I have to grudgingly admit though that since I installed Dexpot (which
gives me my multiple 3D desktops) and Windowblinds,(to customize my
workspace), my system now looks like my LinuxMint so I'm having to admit
that Win 7 does not suck. (That's a really difficult thing to say, but its
true)

Re: Linux support for Apache Flex - it works!

2013-02-22 Thread aYo ~
HI Justin,
I succeeded in setting up the Flex 4.9 SDK on FDT 5+. In some ways it was
very similar to your approach but I took a different route. On account of
the paucity of support for Linux in the flash player I have most of my
workstations dual booting in Win7 and Linux Mint. The machine I tested this
on is an Asus G73. I started first by building the Flex SDK in Windows with
the SDK installer and tested the SDK in FlashBuilder 4.6 and FDT 5. Ca
marche!
Then I logged into Linux Mint. Having read your ToDo I decide to look
inside the Windows assembled Flex SDK first. It seemed like it totally
matched your directions interms of file locations and so on. I copied the
SDK across to my Linus SDK folder and plugged it into FDT5 (expecting it to
fail). Non, c'est parfait. Worked like a dream. So it seems that there is
the option to build the SDK in windows and just copy the SDK into Linux and
that's that
