IMO, this high volume list is not the best way to approach developers with
offers for a new IDE. There are several ways I can think of that would help
this project while also aligning with your commercial interests / offers,
though.

I think Apache Flex needs evangelism.

I would suggest contacting each Apache Flex UGM listed here [1] and offer to
send or have one of your JetBrains evangelists present training on the use of
your IDE to each of the Apache Flex User groups globally. I am the UGM for
RIA5280 & I would love to host your presenter. The topic is up to you - but
consider just explaining to my developers how to use your IDE with Apache Flex
4.9.

Many involved in the project would like to be able to show commercial
applications (reference customers) who used the Apache Flex 4.9 SDK to develop
their applications. We would like to show applications built with AF4.9 here
[2]. IMO, there is no harm if your team helped create these case studies which
promote that the application was built using the JetBrains IDE ItelliJ, too.

We know we also lack documentation that shows very small code snippets and
examples of how each feature / command in the SDK is used. This type of full
featured toolkit documentation / training would really help new developers and
technologists to feel comfortable starting a new project in Apache Flex. If you
have an interest, this is also a way for your team to take screen clips while
coding using the IntelliJ IDE and describe how each part of the SDK is used.
Here is a recent message on this topic [3]. Again, this reference documentation
could showcase the IntelliJ IDE and also help complete examples for each part
of the ASDOCS documentation.

No. Their plugin requires the "IDEA Ultimate" version.

A 30 day trial is available. The trial is the fully capable version, time
limited at 30 days.

Use it for 30 days and see if you can stand to run FB again. I can't. The
only reason why I was going back to FB for a while was for the design view
(sometimes it is easier to lay things out on the the screen instead of
count pixels before you do the coding). Since DV is dead and gone, there
was no reason to keep FB around other than to test things for the SDK.

They support hundreds of languages and plugins. Flex isn't as popular as
it was, but it is VERY well supported. Because the structure is close to
Java and others, they are able to do some really nice parsing on your code
which makes it 20 steps ahead of the other guys. Oh, and its not based on
Eclipse... So there's that too.

Re: [OT] Interesting stat from JetBrains

2013-02-12 Thread Jagan Langa Sami Durai
I thought to try the IDEA for my flex development, after seeing a lot of
discussions in this group and in linkedlin about the comparison between
IDEA and FB. I'm using FB for past 5 years (From FB3 to FB4.7). I really
don't know where to start in IDEA. I downloaded the community version and
installed it. after that I don't see any options to create a flex project.
or options to add a plugin to support flex project.

My Doubts are,
1. Can I create flex project in community version..?
2. Is there a trial version available for flex development ?
3. When compared to the cost of the FB4.7 and IDEA seems equal. How do you
guys(IDEA team) believe that you can attract the developers and most
importantly the Management peoples or the clients who is familiar
(almost addicted) with FB?
4. I don't see any dedicated page/product for "IDEA for Flex" in the IDEA
product page, do i really missed that page in their products page..?

Hi,
I'm the author of that blog post.
Marketing guys asked me not to give numbers, but I hope they do not read
this mailing list :). So I can say that IntelliJ IDEA has several
thousand of active ActionScript/Flex developers who agreed to send
anonymous usage statistics to JetBrains and they run/debug Flash apps
hundreds of thousands times a month.

Unfortunately we do not know percentage of IntelliJ IDEA users who agree
to send anonymous statistics. If it is 10% then we have tens of
thousands of Flash developers, if it is 1% - there are hundreds of
thousands of them (which I doubt :) ). So, assuming that this percentage
is constant, we can only analyze trends.

Just checked statistics for January 2013 - there's incredible 35% growth
compared to December 2012!

According to the feedback my personal opinion is that most of new users
are not technology newbies, but they are looking for an alternative IDE.

We probably could ask them somehow off list since this project could
be a huge boost of revenue for them when it turns the corner. Seeing
as the compiler is opensource, I can see major benefits from them
embracing Apache Flex, which in my opinion they already have.
