Genesis 2.0 stalled...

2008-09-03 Thread Jason Dillon
Sorry this work stalled for a few days, as my MacBook Pro crashed and
decided that I didn't really need to have a display anymore (boots up
with a blank screen everytime, no matter what I try).

Anyways, got the old G5 and MacMini up and running so I can continue
to get this stuff finished up.

Sorry about the delay.

BTW, if you have a MBP June/July 2007 be-careful using external
displays, as the video card in the system is faulty and can kill your
system... :-(

Before you can be given contributor access you must first file
an ICLA (Individual Contributor License Agreement) with the

record of an ICLA on file for you yet. Please let us know when
it is filed and once verified we can grant you contributor

You can find the form and information on how to submit it at

Hi Rhoda,
Here is the link to the ICLA pdf:
http://www.apache.org/licenses/icla.pdf

You can submit the form electronically by printing, filling out,
signing, then scanning it. Send the scanned and signed form to:

secretary at apache dot org
legal-archive at apache dot org

It will probably take about a week (maybe a bit more due to the
upcoming labor day holiday) for the ICLA to be recorded by the
secretary.

Assignee: Tim McConnell
 Fix For: 2.1.3

I have installed wtp-all-in-one-sdk-win32 and than follow the instructions as
 suggested in
 http://geronimo.apache.org/geronimo-eclipse-plugin-installation-instructions.html.
I have also manually installed the plugin:
 geronimo-eclipse-plugin-2.0.0-deployable.zip
I configured the server geronimo and try to start it without deploying
 anything yet.
In the eclipse console, a message indicates that the server startup is
complete, but the status in Eclipse is still 'starting'.
Indeed, the server is started, I can use the web console, but then comes the
 timeout and the server stops.
 Is it a configuration problem?
 Thanks

I have increase the -XX:MaxPermSize of eclipse.ini from 128m to 256m.

But still have hanging problems
Now I clearly received 'outOfMemory' errors

 Problem starting server with WTP201

 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-473
 Project: Geronimo-Devtools
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: eclipse-plugin
Affects Versions: 2.0.0
 Environment: Windows XP
 WTP 201
Reporter: Jean-Jacques Parent
Assignee: Tim McConnell
 Fix For: 2.1.3

 Attachments: .log, geronimo.log, JIRA-473.doc

 Thanks

Hi Jean-Jacques, your memory parameters seem fine. I normally use the
parameters below and typically only have memory problems when there are other
problems.

-Xms256m -Xmx256m -XX:MaxPermSize=128

Unfortunately, I'm still unable to exactly reproduce your failure. Would you be
able to either email me or attach your entire EAR file ?? Thanks for your

Another patch of a better solution provided by Jack, it has the same

One extra modification is that the property of maxSavePostSize should be

You should have all of the authorization you need with
geronimo-contributors. It contains everything from geronimo-users plus
some. If you haven't already done so, you should signoff and back on

I think we need to remove the geronimo-users group - Does anybody know

I put a fix in trunk in rev 691702.

The Schema section of v42 of

Kevan Miller commented on GERONIMO-4275:

David,
Heh. Nice work! How'd you figure out the naming work-around? Great stuff
testing with newer versions of OpenJPA!

We're ramping up a 2.1.3 release. Will need to check with Donald if he thinks
we can include this fix. There's of course possibility that we'll run into some
TCK problems...

FYI, our preferred mechanism for updating the version of OpenJPA would be:

add the new openjpa version to the servers repository. e.g.

repository\org\apache\openjpa\openjpa\1.2.0\openjpa-1.2.0.jar

Then configure geronimo to use this new version. i.e. add the following to
var/config/artifact_aliases.properties

org.apache.openjpa/openjpa/1.0.2/jar=org.apache.openjpa/openjpa/1.2.0/jar

openejb-jar-2.2.xsd missing from the schema subdirectory of the main Geronimo installation directory

2008-09-03 Thread Ted Kirby
I opened JIRA (GERONIMO-4276) openejb-jar-2.2.xsd missing from the
schema subdirectory of the main Geronimo installation directory to fix
this in Geronimo.

I made some updates to the web-page
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC21/openejb-jarxml.html.

I did not have a good idea how to fix this, but I took a shot at it.
David Blevins suggested putting the schema somewhere in
plugins/openejb, so I put it in
plugins/openejb/openejb/src/main/resources/openejb-jar-2.2.xsd. I
then used geronimo/server/trunk/assemblies/geronimo-boilerplate/pom.xml
to get the schema into the schema directory.

I am open to discussion and suggestion for a better way to do this.

Thanks,
Ted Kirby

be sufficient to use perhaps the maven dependency plugin to extract
the schemas and put them into the car file directly and then use the
existing copy-file functionality to get them unpacked on plugin
install. This would eliminate an entire function of boilerplate that
really doesn't belong there anyway.

boilerplate that really doesn't belong there anyway.

I can't really comment on your approach, other than to say it sounds
good, and I agree I think a better approach is needed. The one I put
in the JIRA is not very sophisticated or general. It address this
specific issue. There is mechanism to copy schemas, but I could not
figure it out. Comments/stanzas like this in pom.xml:

   !--
HACK: Copy XmlBeans generated schemas.
--

groupIdorg.apache.geronimo.buildsupport/groupId
artifactIdbuildsupport-maven-plugin/artifactId
executions
execution
goals
goalcopy-xmlbeans-schemas/goal

I think support your case as well.

I made some updates to the web-page
 http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC21/openejb-jarxml.html.

I did not have a good idea how to fix this, but I took a shot at it.
David Blevins suggested putting the schema somewhere in
plugins/openejb, so I put it in
 plugins/openejb/openejb/src/main/resources/openejb-jar-2.2.xsd. I
 then used geronimo/server/trunk/assemblies/geronimo-boilerplate/pom.xml
to get the schema into the schema directory.

I am open to discussion and suggestion for a better way to do this.

 Thanks,
 Ted Kirby

The Schema section of v42 of

The openejb-jar.xml deployment plan is defined by the openejb-jar-2.1.xsd

 1. All versions of openejb-jar in this text should be 2.2, not 2.1
 2. The namespace URL should be

Went ahead and stepped through the Abbot code a little more. Those things on
the About dialog are not ToolItems, but are Buttons so we still want to use the
WidgetToolTipMatcher inner class, but you'll also need to add to the getText
method to handle instances of Button. The fact that you found 6 ToolItems was
just a coincidence.

So for the second call, you may want to copy the clickToolItem (...) method
(since this one is ToolItem specific) and create one for clicking the Button by
finding its tool tip text. (I just named it clickButtonFromToolTipText below,
but I'm sure there's a better name for it).

The code should look something like this:

Shell dialogShell = aHelper.clickMenuItem(workbenchShell, new String[]
{Help, About Eclipse Platform}, About Eclipse Platform);
aHelper.clickButtonFromToolTipText(dialogShell,Eclipse.org - Mylyn);

When stepping through the code, I went ahead and copied the tool tip texts that
were available to me.

While I like the idea of this change (and I'm certainly in favor of less
maintenance when changing versions) ... I wonder if it is an appropriate
change.

IIUC one of the reasons for the README RELEASE_NOTES being in the root
of the svn tree was for users that pull the source from SVN or pull it
from the extracted/zipped version that we make available upon release.
This change makes those docs a bit less useful. We also include these
documents (copied from the svn root) in our distribution directory and
reference them from the web pages. Seeing @VERSION@ peppered throughout
the document doesn't seem very good.

For this to work, trunk/RE*.txt should not be copied to distribution
web site, but rather
trunk/assemblies/geronimo-boilerplate/target/classes/contents/RE*.txt,
which are the substituted versions. (I suppose we might enhance the
build to copy these files to trunk/target/RE*.txt. I also wonder if
this substituted version might be put in the distributed source .zip?)
These substituted versions are in the .zip files. The doc should
then refer to the versions on the distribution web site.

That would leave the svn checkout case.

RELEASE_NOTES is less of a concern, I think, since the version number
is part of the file's name, as in RELEASE_NOTES-2.2-SNAPSHOT.txt.

For it and the problematic README.txt, a comment might be added near
the top of the file defining what the @VERSION@ is. (i.e., the
@VERSION@ of this file is 2.2) It would be a manual step to update
this comment. :-(.

It seems there are a few places where @VERSION@ might be removed altogether.

It sounds like we are trading one maintenance issue for another.

I don't see an maintenance issue here, just getting the build the way
we like it, and a procedure change in terms of where we get the
RE*.txt files from that we put on the distribution web site, unless I
am missing something here.

Once this is done, I think the major cases are covered. The source
case is what is left. If they intend to build the source, @VERSION@
will be expanded.
Maybe we add a note about if you see @VERSION@, you have source. It
will be expanded on build. The version of the source you have can be
found from the name of the RELEASE_NOTES file in this directory:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]@.txt.

That would leave the svn checkout case.

RELEASE_NOTES is less of a concern, I think, since the version number
is part of the file's name, as in RELEASE_NOTES-2.2-SNAPSHOT.txt.

I'm not sure if this is less of a concern. The RELEASE_NOTES have to be
manually updated for each release anyway to generate the JIRA lists, add
functions, etc It doesn't seem like a big deal to me to add in
changing the version number along with everything else.

Agreed. Other manual editing is required here. Just a small thing
(version number) to not have to worry about.

For it and the problematic README.txt, a comment might be added near

 altogether.

Yes, it could probably be removed in several places. However I think it
still must be there in some form or fashion (esp. to indicate the
enhancements included in major releases). The other downside of the
@VERSION@ in the README is that we specifically reference the RELEASE-NOTES
from the README. It is probably more helpful to reference this by it's
exact name rather than make the user translate. I think it's worth some
extra effort on our part to save the user some grief/confusion.

The README already has Please read the [EMAIL PROTECTED]@.txt
for this reference.

This JIRA is not a big thing. It can be reverted if desired. Just a
small step to try to automate some parts of the process. While not
without issues, it seems a good thing on the whole moving forward.
Any other opinions out there?

Ted

extracted/zipped version that we make available upon release. This change
makes those docs a bit less useful. We also include these documents
 (copied
from the svn root) in our distribution directory and reference them from
 the
web pages. Seeing @VERSION@ peppered throughout the document doesn't
 seem
 very good.

 Thoughts?

I see geronimo-openejb-2.0.xsd in
geronimo-openejb-builder/src/main/xsd, not openejb-jar-2.2.xsd.

I guess I wasn't clear. I looked in our current code base and found
the 2.0 xsd. What is the difference between the 2.0 xsd geronimo uses
and the 2.2 xsd from openejb? Should we change geronimo-openejb-
builder to use the 2.2 schema?

In general we need a better solution for getting the schemas into
the schema
directory. Previously I've been thinking that we should enhance
the plugin
installer to be able to extract files from the classpath as well as
the
unpacked car, but I'm wondering if it would be sufficient to use
perhaps the
maven dependency plugin to extract the schemas and put them into
the car
file directly and then use the existing copy-file functionality to
get them
unpacked on plugin install. This would eliminate an entire
function of

boilerplate that really doesn't belong there anyway.

   --
   plugin
   groupIdorg.apache.geronimo.buildsupport/groupId
   artifactIdbuildsupport-maven-plugin/artifactId
   executions
   execution
   goals
   goalcopy-xmlbeans-schemas/goal
   /goals
   /execution
   /executions
   /plugin

This is for eclipse support and has nothing to do with the source xsds
and only affects the e.g. geronimo-openejb-builder project. What I
was suggesting was to use the (I think) maven dependency plugin to
extract the schemas from the geronimo-*-builder jars into a
appropriate location so they also get included as plain files inside
the *-deployer car files so they can be extracted using the existing
copy-files functionality in geronimo-plugin.xml. I'm not certain
which maven plugin would be best for this but think the dependency
plugin is a good place to start looking.

I think support your case as well.

I made some updates to the web-page
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC21/openejb-jarxml.html.

I did not have a good idea how to fix this, but I took a shot at it.
David Blevins suggested putting the schema somewhere in
plugins/openejb, so I put it in
plugins/openejb/openejb/src/main/resources/openejb-jar-2.2.xsd. I
then used geronimo/server/trunk/assemblies/geronimo-boilerplate/
pom.xml

to get the schema into the schema directory.

I am open to discussion and suggestion for a better way to do this.

Thanks,
Ted Kirby

They're not 2.0 and 2.2 of the same xsd, they're different xsds.

Here's an old thread with some good info:
