Thanks Jeff & Dave.
I now have a much better understanding of Context-level clustering.

Hernan,
Please drop our earlier request to delete the following page:
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC11/geronimo-tomcat-context-level-clustering-sample-application.html

Instead we might have to update that page once Jeff adds in the new code.

However, I think we can still delete the duplicate page
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC11/clustering-sample-application.html

To a degree yes, but my understanding is all contexts would have the
valves, manager, etc attached.

Context level is clean IMHO.

Thanks for the info Jeff!

Allows you to pick and choose which web apps are distributed and which
are not. Example: There may be a mission critical app that needs
clustering, but we most certainly wouldn't want to cluster the Geronimo
web console.

Re: Context level clustering not supported in Tomcat it seems

2007-03-01 Thread Dave Colasurdo
I'm still trying to understand what exactly this means to users of
Geronimo/Tomcat.

IIUC, enabling host/engine clustering basically means that all web
applications on a particular host/engine that contain the distributable
tag in their web.xml will replicate session state with other cluster
members that use the same multicast address and are on the same subnet.

Now for context attribute replication... Does this mean that a user can
specify unique replication domain per individual web application from a
common Tomcat/Geronimo installation? Or is it something different?

I'm trying to understand what advantage context attribute replication
provides.

This will probably result in a couple of lines of code changes for us
since we are extending the context with a GeronimoStandardContext.

I need to look at our code and see what we need to do.

It is not possible to configure clustering in context.xml. It must be done at
the Host level (with the jvmRoute defined at the Engine level) within server.xml
That makes our default clustering article
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC11/clustering-sample-application.html
invalid. Should we now remove it saying that "Geronimo (Tomcat
version) supports clustering at the Host/Engine level only"?

Dave Colasurdo and myself have already created a new article
illustrating how to setup Geronimo (Tomcat version) clustering at the
host/engine level:
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC11/clustering-sample-application-tomcat-host-level.html.
Please suggest if we should retain only this and delete the other
article on context level clustering?

Re: Context level clustering not supported in Tomcat it seems

2007-02-20 Thread Shiva Kumar H R

Thanks Hernan. These are the pages to be removed:
i) http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC11/clustering-sample-application.html
ii)
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC11/geronimo-tomcat-context-level-clustering-sample-application.html

It would also be nice if we can achieve this:
Any hits to the old page
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC11/clustering-sample-application.html throws
a "Request being Redirected" page with the following contents

"Context level" clustering has a known bug in Tomcat as reported in
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMO-2577 and
http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=41620. Hence we recommend
that you use "Host level" clustering as documented in
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC11/geronimo-tomcat-host-level-clustering-sample-application.html

and after some time say 10secs redirects the page to the new wiki article.

It is not possible to configure clustering in context.xml. It must be
done at
the Host level (with the jvmRoute defined at the Engine level) within
server.xml

Agreed. If Tomcat can't claim support for this scenario then neither
should Geronimo. Feel free to remove the "context clustering" article.
We may need Hernan to help here as I suspect there are two copies of
