Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Knox 0.14.0 rc 2

2018-01-29 Thread Philip Zampino
The CHANGES file includes a reference to KNOX-1144
, but the description is
incorrect.
It reads
Change Rest Assured "expect" to "then"

, but it should be

Provider Configuration Reference Relationships Aren't Established For
Existing Descriptors at Gateway Startup

It must have applied an intermittent commit message.

Not a major problem, IMO, but worth pointing out.

[RESULT] [VOTE] Release Apache Knox 0.14.0 rc 2

2017-12-12 Thread larry mccay
The VOTE for 0.14.0 rc2 passes with:

3 binding +1's
2 non-binding +'1
0 -1's

I will be working on promoting the RC2 to an official release shortly.

Thank you for taking the time to test this release and contributing to the
Apache Knox community!

KNOX-1137 is the JIRA
which addresses this.

KNOX-1144  addresses this;
I believe it involves provider configurations and descriptors that exist
prior to gateway start-up.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Knox 0.14.0 rc 2

2017-12-11 Thread larry mccay
* built from source and ran unit tests
* verified signatures
* ran knox samples for webhdfs, hive, hbase
* used nodejs client to interact with webhdfs and webhcat

* ran knoxshell samples noted:
1. logging seems broken and is printing to console - at least with default
config - will need to file a JIRA
2. hive samples are difficult to run through executable jar due to needing
to add hive jars to classpath - will file JIRA and write article to share a
workaround
3. wrote a handy sample for testing that will make a nice feature in the
next release - a simple hive shell called knoxline :)

* Tested service discovery with and without remote config monitoring and
with ambari service monitoring - this is amazing work and was fun to test -
couple things noted:
1. it can get confusing trying to keep track of where topologies are coming
from - I believe we have a JIRA for CLI listing of remote descriptors and
provider configs already - that will help
2. it seems that you can get into a state where if you have an XML issue in
a provider config that just fixing the provider config in ZK doesn't result
in the topology getting repulled - needs a JIRA and additional investigation

* Tested UI improvements to protect against changing generated topologies -
very nice!
* Tested Okta with KnoxSSO for SAML
* Tested Form based provider with KnoxSSO

I don't find any of the above to be blockers and am very happy to give my:

+1

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Knox 0.14.0 rc 2

2017-12-07 Thread Colm O hEigeartaigh
Thanks for the explanation, I'm fine with publishing the artifacts to maven
after the vote. I guess it's more of a big deal if projects are consuming
the artifacts as part of their build cycle, so publishing the maven
artifacts with the vote allows them to test the release properly.

+1 (non-binding) from me for the release. The only thing I noticed was in
the user-guide it mentions "bin/shell.jar" however in knoxshell it's
actually "bin/knoxshell.jar".

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Knox 0.14.0 rc 2

2017-12-07 Thread larry mccay
Hi Colm -

KNOX-1066 is not a code related patch, it actually details what existing
clients need to do in order to work going through Knox.
We will be looking at whether and/or how to incorporate it into the
existing docs for SOLR.

As for Maven, our release process has the publishing of maven artifacts as
part of publishing the actual release not for VOTEs.
Interesting that others are do this earlier.

Do you think this would greatly simplify the RC testing?
I wouldn't imagine many were consuming Knox artifacts as dependencies quite
yet.
I can see the client stuff in KnoxShell maybe.

At any rate, the maven publishing is currently done once a RC passes the
VOTE.

thanks,

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Knox 0.14.0 rc 2

2017-12-07 Thread Colm O hEigeartaigh
Hi Larry,

Just wondering what the status is of these two JIRAs which are marked as
fix for 0.14.0 but are still open?

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/KNOX-1066
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/KNOX-1140

Also, do you normally only release the maven artifacts after the vote is
done? Most Apache projects include the maven staging repo URL in the vote
email from what I can see, although it's not strictly necessary.

Colm.
