although it may be a slight bit of scope creep; I think this logic would be
more clear why it's needed if it merely propagated the SolrInputField from the
root doc to the child docs. My understanding is that this will wind up being
equivalent to what happens now, which is very non-obvious; it took a bunch of
digging on my part to see.

this is here in part so that we can test _not_ doing this (i.e. current
behavior)... but I don't think it's worth it. If we want to _not_ do it
conditionally then it could be via luceneMatchVersion but I don't care either
way as it's minor to add it unconditionally.

Can we rename this addRootField? and separate out the version part to
addVersionField which should _not_ be called by this method; the caller should.
addVersionField only needs to be called for the nested case, not by
getLuceneDocument.

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-12074) Add numeric typed equivalents to StrField

2018-11-18 Thread David Smiley (JIRA)

[
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-12074?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=16691253#comment-16691253
 ]

David Smiley commented on SOLR-12074:
-

bq. How would this work with facet-sorting on index and the stats component?
Would it behave as a numeric or a String field?

numeric

bq. +1, it's important for it to be the same field in the schema for both
usability, and so that solr knows how to optimize single-valued lookups.

I agree that's best. This is more work than some new set of fields expressly
for lookup but so be it. We want a single field that can have distinct options
for tweaking the need for a range index and a lookup index independently. Lets
say we add a new two new booleans: lookupIndexed (or valueIndexed) and
rangeIndexed? The presence of indexed=true will pick defaults for those two as
we see fit. The ship hasn't sailed; we are adding further specificity on what
type of index(es).

We could put these options on PointField so that users need not go mess with
their schema. But then it's regrettable that we have "PointField" on this
field type and its subclass as it's suggestive of Lucene PointValues which
implies BKD. Or we create a new numeric subclass of NumericFieldType (peer to
TrieField & PointField). I'm not sure what to call it but it's the subclasses
that have the primitive types in their names (Long, Double, ...) that users see
in the schema. In this scheme they might simply be LongField and DoubleField
etc. What do you think? I think it's more user friendly. Even with such
generic/universal names, it doesn't prevent some future change in underlying
implementation using luceneMatchVersion.

2 Level grouping (solr 5.5.3)

2018-11-18 Thread Ian Caldwell
We have been working on a search index that contains Archived Web Pages that
has been collected over a number of years. This can result in the same
page(url) being collected on many dates. The problem that we faced is that we
wanted to group results by Site(domain) but this left us with the same page
being found many times so we needed a second level of grouping.

I have extended the SOLR 5.5.3 grouping code to allow for 2 level grouping,
through discussions with some of the people that are involved with archiving
websites it was requested that the code be shared with the SOLR developers. I
have made the code public on github SOLR
Grouping.

When extending the SOLR grouping code I tried to keep the code generic so that
it could possible used elsewhere but I did not try to make all existing
features work, only focusing on the parts that we needed for our system. Along
the way I found a couple of bugs that I fixed in this code (1. Integer overflow
in holding the total record count & 2. Not searching all shards when performing
the second phase of the query(get all records within a group)).

[jira] [Commented] (LUCENE-2562) Make Luke a Lucene/Solr Module

Tomoko Uchida commented on LUCENE-2562:
---

A small update:

> 2. It should be possible to run Luke from a source checkout, but it's not now.

I added an ant tartget, {{launch}}, to the build file. This command launches
luke after a source checkout.

{code:bash}
ant -f lucene/luke/build.xml launch
{code}

> I think it would be great if there was a version of Luke that always worked
> with trunk - and it would also be great if it was easier to match Luke jars
> with Lucene versions.
> While I'd like to get GWT Luke into the mix as well, I think the easiest
> starting point is to straight port Luke to another UI toolkit before
> abstracting out DTO objects that both GWT Luke and Pivot Luke could share.
> I've started slowly converting Luke's use of thinlet to Apache Pivot. I
> haven't/don't have a lot of time for this at the moment, but I've plugged
> away here and there over the past work or two. There is still a *lot* to do.

 Key: SOLR-12998
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-12998
 Project: Solr
  Issue Type: Bug
Security Level: Public (Default Security Level. Issues are Public)
Reporter: Varun Thacker

I started Solr ( 7_6 branch ) using {{bin/solr start -e cloud -noprompt}} and
indexed 25M documents which amounts to roughly 1GB per replica in raw disk
space.

Whenever I restart the cluster node2 ( 7574 ) get's these errors in the logs
which seem to indicate that request recovery is trying to find a core which
isn't completely loaded yet.

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-12074) Add numeric typed equivalents to StrField

2018-11-18 Thread Yonik Seeley (JIRA)

 ]

Yonik Seeley commented on SOLR-12074:

bq. It'd be nifty if PointField could additionally have a Terms index for these
full-precision terms instead of requiring a separate field in the schema.

+1, it's important for it to be the same field in the schema for both
usability, and so that solr knows how to optimize single-valued lookups.
If we could turn back time, I'd argue for keeping "indexed=true" in the schema
to mean normal full-text index, and then use another name for the BKD structure
(rangeIndexed=true? pointIndexed=true?), but I guess that ship has sailed.

So what should the name of the new flag for the schema be?
valueIndexed?
termIndexed?

> There ought to be numeric typed equivalents to StrField in the schema. The
> TrieField types can be configured to do this with precisionStep=0, but the
> TrieFields are deprecated and slated for removal in 8.0. PointFields may be
> adequate for some use cases but, unlike TrieField, it's not as efficient for
> simple field:value lookup queries. They probably should use the same
> internal sortable full-precision term format that TrieField uses (details
> currently in {{LegacyNumericUtils}} (which are used by the deprecated Trie
> fields).

Toke Eskildsen commented on SOLR-12074:

How would this work with facet-sorting on index and the stats component? Would
it behave as a numeric or a String field?

> There ought to be numeric typed equivalents to StrField in the schema. The
> TrieField types can be configured to do this with precisionStep=0, but the
> TrieFields are deprecated and slated for removal in 8.0. PointFields may be
> adequate for some use cases but, unlike TrieField, it's not as efficient for
> simple field:value lookup queries. They probably should use the same
> internal sortable full-precision term format that TrieField uses (details

[jira] [Commented] (LUCENE-8374) Reduce reads for sparse DocValues

2018-11-18 Thread Toke Eskildsen (JIRA)

Toke Eskildsen commented on LUCENE-8374:

[~jpountz] I do not understand your resistance against providing an
out-of-the-box performance improvement to Lucene-based search engines. I do not
see index-upgrades as trivial exercises and I have previously encountered quite
a lot of resistance against trying patched versions of Lucene/Solr. As a
developer it is probably second nature to you. For a lot of users, not so much.

Your patch-splitting suggestion is interesting. The three parts [DISI-blocks,
dense and variable bits per value] could reasonably easy be split into
[DISI-blocks, dense] and [variable bits per value]. Or they could not-so-easily
be split into all 3 parts. They would be additive though (as opposed to
independent), as they share a lot of structure. If splitting helps acceptance,
I'll try and commit that way. I'm also game to make a split patch, if someone
commits to do a review.

Note: I am aware that Lucene/Solr 7.6 is in pre-release and that larger patches
should not be committed to master until 7.6 has been released.

> The {{Lucene70DocValuesProducer}} has the internal classes
> {{SparseNumericDocValues}} and {{BaseSortedSetDocValues}} (sparse code path),
> which again uses {{IndexedDISI}} to handle the docID -> value-ordinal lookup.
> The value-ordinal is the index of the docID assuming an abstract tightly
> packed monotonically increasing list of docIDs: If the docIDs with
> corresponding values are {{[0, 4, 1432]}}, their value-ordinals will be {{[0,
> 1, 2]}}.
> h2. Outer blocks
> The lookup structure of {{IndexedDISI}} consists of blocks of 2^16 values
> (65536), where each block can be either {{ALL}}, {{DENSE}} (2^12 to 2^16
> values) or {{SPARSE}} (< 2^12 values ~= 6%). Consequently blocks vary quite a
> lot in size and ordinal resolving strategy.
> When a sparse Numeric DocValue is needed, the code first locates the block
> containing the wanted docID flag. It does so by iterating blocks one-by-one
> until it reaches the needed one, where each iteration requires a lookup in
> the underlying {{IndexSlice}}. For a common memory mapped index, this
> translates to either a cached request or a read operation. If a segment has
> 6M documents, worst-case is 91 lookups. In our web archive, our segments has
> ~300M values: A worst-case of 4577 lookups!
> One obvious solution is to use a lookup-table for blocks: A long[]-array with
> an entry for each block. For 6M documents, that is < 1KB and would allow for
> direct jumping (a single lookup) in all instances. Unfortunately this
> lookup-table cannot be generated upfront when the writing of values is purely
> streaming. It can be appended to the end of the stream before it is closed,
> but without knowing the position of the lookup-table the reader cannot seek
> to it.
> One strategy for creating such a lookup-table would be to generate it during
> reads and cache it for next lookup. This does not fit directly into how
> {{IndexedDISI}} currently works (it is created anew for each invocation), but
> could probably be added with a little work. An advantage to this is that this
> does not change the underlying format and thus could be used with existing
> indexes.
> h2. The lookup structure inside each block
> If {{ALL}} of the 2^16 values are defined, the structure is empty and the
> ordinal is simply the requested docID with some modulo and multiply math.
> Nothing to improve there.
> If the block is {{DENSE}} (2^12 to 2^16 values are defined), a bitmap is used
> and the number of set bits up to the wanted index (the docID modulo the block
> origo) are counted. That bitmap is a long[1024], meaning that worst case is

SOLR-12981: Introduce SolrJ type for JSON facet response parsing

Recent JIRA's (SOLR-12947, SOLR-12965) have added support making it
easier to compose JSON query/faceting requests using SolrJ. But neither
made parsing the responses to these queries any easier.

This commit introduces NestableJsonFacet (along with several companion
types) which are Java representations of the JSON faceting response.
They can be accessed via the new QueryResponse method:
`getJsonFacetingResponse()`.

> SOLR-12947 created {{JsonQueryRequest}}, a SolrJ class that makes it easier
> for users to make JSON-api requests in their Java/SolrJ code. Currently this
> class is missing any sort of faceting capabilities (I'd held off on adding
> this as a part of SOLR-12947 just to keep the issues smaller).
> This JIRA covers adding that missing faceting capability.
> There's a few ways we could handle it, but my first attempt at adding
> faceting support will probably have users specify a Map for
> each facet that they wish to add, similar to how complex queries were
> supported in SOLR-12947. This approach has some pros and cons:
> The benefit is how general the approach is- our interface stays resilient to
> any future changes to the syntax of the JSON API, and users can build facets
> that I'd never thought to explicitly test. The downside is that this doesn't
> offer much abstraction for users who are unfamiliar with our JSON syntax-
> they still have to know the JSON "schema" to build a map representing their
> facet. But in practice we can probably mitigate this downside by providing
> "facet builders" or some other helper classes to provide this abstraction in
> the common case.
> Hope to have a skeleton patch up soon.

> The JSON request API is becoming increasingly popular for sending querying or
> accessing the JSON faceting functionality. The query DSL is simple and easy
> to understand, but crafting requests programmatically is tough in SolrJ.
> Currently, SolrJ users must hardcode in the JSON body they want their request
> to convey. Nothing helps them build the JSON request they're going for,
> making use of these APIs manual and painful.
> We should see what we can do to alleviate this. I'd like to tackle this work
> in two pieces. This (the first piece) would introduces classes that make it
> easier to craft non-faceting requests that use the JSON Request API.
> Improving JSON Faceting support is a bit more involved (it likely requires
> improvements to the Response as well as the Request objects), so I'll aim to
> tackle that in a separate JIRA to keep things moving.

`getJsonFacetingResponse()`.

[jira] [Updated] (LUCENE-8566) Deprecate methods in CustomAnalyzer.Builder which take factory classes

2018-11-18 Thread Tomoko Uchida (JIRA)

 [
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-8566?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel
 ]

Tomoko Uchida updated LUCENE-8566:
--
Description:
CustomAnalyzer.Builder has methods which take implementation classes as follows.
 - withTokenizer(Class factory, String... params)
 - withTokenizer(Class factory, Map
params)
 - addTokenFilter(Class factory, String... params)
 - addTokenFilter(Class factory,
Map params)
 - addCharFilter(Class factory, String... params)
 - addCharFilter(Class factory, Map
params)

Since the builder also has methods which take service names, it seems like that
above methods are unnecessary and a little bit misleading. Giving symbolic
names is preferable to implementation factory classes, but for now, users can
write code depending on implementation classes.

What do you think about deprecating those methods (adding {{@Deprecated}}
annotations) and deleting them in the future releases? Those are called by only
test cases so deleting them should have no impact on current lucene/solr
codebase.

If this proposal gains your consent, I will create a patch. (Let me know if I
missed some point. I'll close it.)

[jira] [Created] (LUCENE-8566) Deprecate methods in CustomAnalyzer.Builder which take factory classes

2018-11-18 Thread Tomoko Uchida (JIRA)
Tomoko Uchida created LUCENE-8566:

Summary: Deprecate methods in CustomAnalyzer.Builder which take
factory classes

 Project: Lucene - Core
  Issue Type: Improvement

CustomAnalyzer.Builder has methods which take implementation classes as follows.
 - withTokenizer(Class factory, String... params)
 - withTokenizer(Class factory, Map
params)
 - addTokenFilter(Class factory, String... params)
 - addTokenFilter(Class factory,
Map params)
 - addCharFilter(Class factory, String... params)
 - addCharFilter(Class factory, Map
params)

Since the builder also has methods which take service names, it seems like that
above methods are unnecessary and a little bit misleading. Giving symbolic
names is preferable to implementation factory classes, but for now, users can
write code that depending on implementation classes.

What do you think about deprecating those methods (adding {{@Deprecated}}
annotations) and deleting them in the future releases? Those are called by only
test cases so deleting them should have no impact on current lucene/solr
codebase.

If this proposal gains your consent, I will create a patch. (Let me know if I
