Re: Lucene/Solr 8.2.0
Hi Ignacio, I found a wrong space character in Optimizations part of the Lucene News. (" Optimizations" should be " Optimizations") So I changed it on CMS and submitted. It looks fine now, but needs checking. Thanks, Namgyu

Re: [RESULT] [VOTE] Release Lucene/Solr 8.2.0 RC1
Ignacio, When you do the final release steps, please try out the updated addVersion.py here https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-8883 which generate more complete and consistent new version sections in CHANGES.txt for our next release. I should commit this. ~ David Smiley Apache Lucene/Solr Search Developer http://www.linkedin.com/in/davidwsmiley On Thu, Jul 25, 2019 at 3:58 AM Ignacio Vera wrote: > It's been >72h since the vote was initiated and the result is: > > > +1 8 (5 binding) > > 0 0 > > -1 0 > > > This vote has PASSED > > > I am +1 to have a separate ANNOUNCE mail in Solr mailing list about the > bad default as this is not specific to this release. > > > >

It's been >72h since the vote was initiated and the result is: +1 8 (5 binding) 0 0 -1 0 This vote has PASSED I am +1 to have a separate ANNOUNCE mail in Solr mailing list about the bad default as this is not specific to this release.
Re: [VOTE] Release Lucene/Solr 8.2.0 RC1
Jason, I’ll not veto the release either. Propose to author an ANNOUNCE mail to solr-user@l.a.o and Solr website news that states the bad default and ask users of 8.1/8.2 to fix their config. Jason, would you be able to author and send such an email? I’m not at work until Monday.. PS: should the project have a security-announce list, RSS, slack channel or whatever that users could subscribe to for such notifications as well as CVE announcements? Re: [VOTE] Release Lucene/Solr 8.2.0 RC1
To throw my 2 cents in on SOLR-13647. Yes, users can fix the problem trivially by updating their solr.in.sh _if_ they're aware of the issue. And we recommend all users examine their config carefully when upgrading Solr versions, so users _should_ be aware of the issue. But at the same time, the expectation/promise in previous releases has been that solr.in.sh has no effect (is entirely commented out) by default. So while we tell users to check all config files for themselves, we also tell them elsewhere that solr.in.sh is a bit of an exception out of the box. I think the "well the users should have checked" stance is a little simplistic in this case. I wouldn't be against a respin, though I won't scuttle the vote if no one else feels strongly about it. But if there's no respin I think we should make an effort to highlight this potential issue either in the release announcement, release notes, or CHANGES.txt. Re: [VOTE] Release Lucene/Solr 8.2.0 RC1
Hi, Two issues have been raised: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-13647: This is something that has always been released (included in 8.1.0 and 8.1.1). It is a bad default parameter when starting Solr in Linux machines and can be easily corrected by a user by commenting out the default or changing the value. https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-13545: As I understand this change has introduced some flakiness in a tests but has no practical impact to the users. I believe those issues are not affecting the functionality of Lucene / Solr and therefore I will continue with this vote without respin, otherwise someone state the opposite. I will be closing the vote tomorrow so please speak up before then if you have any concern. Re: [VOTE] Release Lucene/Solr 8.2.0 RC1
Does it have a practical impact to users, or is the fact that it triggers test failures the main annoyance? We have been trying to release what was 8.1.2 at the time since June 12th and kept postponing to the point that we decided to cancel 8.1.2 and focus on 8.2.0 instead. In my opinion we should set the bar very high for blockers now. The change to Lucene 8.2.0 snapshot was done on July 10th. Previous to that the Lucene version was 8.1.0. Re: Lucene/Solr 8.2.0
Hmm that's possible, although the jump is bigger than anything I observed while testing. I assume these charts are building off of apache/master, or something close to that? If so, then the timing is off a bit. LUCENE-8781 was pushed quite a while before that, and then https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-8895 which extended the encoding to be the default (not just for postings) was pushed on July 2 or so, but the chart shows a jump on July 10? Re: Lucene/Solr 8.2.0
FYI I added a note to https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-8811, I think it's too breaking for 8.2 and should wait for 9.0. We can mitigate LUCENE-8810 in 8.x by disabling the flattening of inner disjunctions when this would create too many clauses in a single BooleanQuery. I'll work with Atri on getting LUCENE-8811 reverted from 8.x and 8.2 and the separate mitigation for LUCENE-8810 in if there are no objections. Hi, We observed using a snapshot of Lucene 8.2 that there is an increase of around 30% on the memory usage of IndexReaders for some of the test datasets, for example: https://elasticsearch-benchmarks.elastic.co/#tracks/http-logs/nightly/default/30d We suspect this is due to this change: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-8781 On Sun, Jul 14, 2019 at 7:10 AM David Smiley wrote: > Since there won't be any 8.1.2 yet some issues got fixed for 8.1.2 and > there is an 8.1.2 section in CHANGES.txt those issues might not be very > noticeable to users that only look at the published HTML version (e.g. > https://lucene.apache.org/solr/8_1_1/changes/Changes.html ). Re: Lucene/Solr 8.2.0
Since there won't be any 8.1.2 yet some issues got fixed for 8.1.2 and there is an 8.1.2 section in CHANGES.txt those issues might not be very noticeable to users that only look at the published HTML version (e.g. https://lucene.apache.org/solr/8_1_1/changes/Changes.html ). Maybe 8.1.2 should be integrated into 8.2.0 in CHANGES.txt? Re: Lucene/Solr 8.2.0
Ishan: I had a look into the issues and I have no objections as far as they get properly reviewed if possible. It will be good to commit the shortly so they go through a few CI iterations in case something gets broken. I am planning to build the first RC early next week as there are no blockers for the release. Steve: Than you so much, I need to work on getting the right permissions. Finally I wrote a draft for the release notes for Lucene and Solr. It would be good if someone with more experience in Solr can review/modify my attempt as it is difficult for me to know which are the most important bits. Hi Ignacio, I wish to include two security bug fixes (not vulnerabilities, but feature regressions due to Authorization plugin), SOLR-13472 and SOLR-13619. I can commit both shortly, attempting to write a unit test for it (which is proving harder to do than reproducing, fixing and testing manually). Please let me know if you have any concerns. BTW for 8.2.0 I updated Solr's CHANGES.txt to split out issues that seemed to be Improvements that were not really New Features. ~ David Smiley Apache Lucene/Solr Search Developer http://www.linkedin.com/in/davidwsmiley On Wed, Jul 10, 2019 at 10:38 AM Ignacio Vera wrote: > Thanks Tomoko for taking care of that. > > On Wed, Jul 10, 2019 at 4:03 PM Đạt Cao Mạnh > wrote: > >> Hi Ignacio, >> >> 8.1.2 bugfix release will cancelled. Hi, I opened a blocker issue a while ago for release 8.2: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-8907 Sorry about that, I noticed the backwards incompatibility we have to deal with today. If there are no objections, I will revert the all related commits from the branch_8x and 8_2 in a few days. Hi, All the issues listed above has been already committed and I see no blockers for release 8.2. I will cut the branch tomorrow around 10am CEST and I will wait for the decision on the bug release 8.1.2 to schedule the build of the first release candidate. Please let us know if this is troublesome for you. I've got one issue that I'd like to get in ( https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-13589), which I should have wrapped up in a day or two. +1 for around July 10th. +1 for starting the 8.2 release process. I think it would be good to get the LUCENE-8632 <https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/pull/726> feature into 8.2 along with the BKD improvements and changes in LUCENE- <https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/pull/747> and LUCENE-8896 <https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/pull/756> Nicholas Knize, Ph.D., GISP Geospatial Software Guy | Elasticsearch Apache Lucene PMC Member and Committer nkn...@apache.org On Wed, Jun 26, 2019 at 9:34 AM Ignacio Vera wrote: > Hi all, > > 8.1 has been released on May 16th and we have new features, enhancements > and fixes that are not released yet so I'd like to start thinking in > releasing Lucene/Solr 8.2.0. > > I can create the 8.2 branch in two weeks time (around July 10th) and build > the first RC by the end of that week if that works for everyone. Lucene/Solr 8.2.0
Hi all, 8.1 has been released on May 16th and we have new features, enhancements and fixes that are not released yet so I'd like to start thinking in releasing Lucene/Solr 8.2.0. I can create the 8.2 branch in two weeks time (around July 10th) and build the first RC by the end of that week if that works for everyone. Please let me know if there are bug fixes that needs to be fixed in 8.2 and might not be ready by then. Cheers, Ignacio
