Re: [marketing] Short Video Marking OOo's 10th Anniversary

2010-07-01 Thread Varun Mittal
Hi All,

Maybe we can make a smaller video with simple tools like Google Picassa
which shall stream of images. Such a video will be easy to make and we can
have more people contributing since we only need images.

We can have screenshots, posters, community meeting pics, release party
pics, ooconf pics ...

In case we agree for this kind of video , count me in :)

Cheers

I'm all for the video idea, but I guess we really need a little team

this is something we have to work on... :)

[marketing] Request for input for OpenOffice.org Newsletter

2010-07-01 Thread Kay Koll

 Hi,

as you may know I authoring the OO.o newsletter. The current format has
a three sections

* introduction section
* News from the Community projects
* News from the Community Council

The first section is typical static. Florian brought up the idea to
change the intro section with every newsletter.

To accomplish that, I would like to collect suggestions and input.

Here is the current introduction text:

*You can help the community, it is easy and fun!*
There are dozens of opportunities to support the community and you do
not have to be a developer to help out. Here are just two out of many
examples:

/Are you interested in marketing?/
Go ahead and help the OpenOffice.org marketing project!
Help spread the word and, by the way, it looks good in your resume.

/Do you like to write articles or short manuals?/
The documentation project is always looking for new and exciting articles.

/Don't be shy and start volunteering today!/
Links Find out how to contribute
LinksDo not miss the videos on Facebook

The other important section where I need input for is the Community
project section.
This is newsletter is an excellent vehicle to promote your project and
find new volunteers !

Here is a typical content for project section
*
Notes from the Community projects*
Presenting the Irish Gaelic Community
Each month, we will interview teams, blog about it, include it in the
OpenOffice.org, newsletter, etc. This month, we start with the Irish
native-language project, lead by Kevin Scannell. Read More »

Any feedback and suggestions are welcome

the OOoCon.

indeed. I've just added a note to the wiki.

Florian, you wanted to ask your contact at the German mail company for
support. Did you get any reply?

I unfortunately did not find the time yet, but I've added a reminder to
the wiki for myself. ;)

I didn't add the item to the wiki by now, because the thread here on the
list was quite negative [1], while discussion on the phone conference
was much more positive [2].

If this idea should work, we would need contacts in several countries as
well as the approval by Sun/Oracle to use the new OOo logo for that
purpose.

I think we should try. I guess it will be pretty expensive, but without
trying, we don't know. :-)

thanks a lot for joining the confcalls! It's great to have you on board,
and I hope I don't talk too fast :-)

First of all, I illustrate three points. I feel these are important point.

- It cooperates all over the world.
Who will cooperate? Community Council, NLC, Projects, major
contributor corporations, user corporations or organizations, ...

I think the major stakeholder is the marketing project, but of course,
support from all within the community is important. We then can include
externals as needed.

- It keeps regularly exposing media.
What and How and When, expose media? Community, Product, Standards,
UseCase, ... and PRWeb, Press Lecture by telecoference or F2F, Media
Interview via online, Social media,... and Twice a week, a week, every
two weeks,...

Right. The more, the better, because we can reach people on various
platforms.

- It is based on the new SMP following start of next 3 or 5 years.
Where is the new SMP special project wiki? :)

I guess the 10 years celebration will be done earlier than the SMP is
ready. :(

Let's make a best way to reach best marketing target and pass.
And, let's develop into the new community state that more
conscientious contributors concentrate.

Agreed! Hope to have you on board ;)

indeed. It's a discussion we should have done earlier before, but I'm
glad that we managed it now :-)

I understood. What we need is to clarify fund issues with specific
examples, because new comers like me don't know the rule.

Indeed. There's a soon-to-be-published draft of some guidelines. Looking
into the latest draft and edits is still on my todo, and I hope to
manage that soon. Then we'll post it to the marketing list for
discussion, and I hope it makes things much more clear for the future.

I confess we had a long delay in working on this, but sometimes things
take just longer...

I see. Additionally my point is what the OOo project itself
internationally is. How each country covers its budget and how we
collaborate with each other are very important. This is totally ideal
not reality, but as long as OOo exists, we can try to make it real to
maximize our ability.

We're working on improving things. The funding situation got *much*
better the last years, but of course we're far away from e.g. Mozilla,
that hires lots of people and can pay for their worktime.

I'm OK, and this is not a negative discussion, but again I think OOo
project in each country is not isolated. We need to consider how we
can collaborate continuously.

I am really glad you see it in a positive way!

Hi Florian,

I'm glad to hear the opinion of mutual agreement from you,
and offering to go on board. I'll edit the wiki later.

But I would like to shear the place for our discussion to make new SMP.
Can you make an initial wiki page of this special program for SMP?
And I would like to know what is the difficult barrier, if it's clear.

I am conceiving the idea based on JA activity.
At first, short notice from JA status.

- I introduced this discussion, and raised the opinion through the JA
marketing project.

- Maho has tweeted the opinion inquiry of this special project by the
JA official twitter account.
http://twitter.com/jaopenofficeorg/status/17449895410

Our opinion inquiry is on going.
I'll report again.

Perhaps after the introduction, we can include some real life examples of
people who just dropped by and then became permanent members of the
community. Some people who have become contributors for documentation or
marketing project w/o being actual developers will reinforce our pitch. I
believe such real life examples motivate in their own special way.

My 2 cents :)
