as discussed on the ML, need to be able to build different types of artifacts
for development by switching profiles (this can also be used to switch
deployment environments).

The final environment - QA or even earlier - should not be filtered differently
to production, but instead we swhould sort out a way to reprocess the artifacts
more predictably and suggest a best practice of externalising all configuration
so the artifact doesn't change at all.

Re: results of synchronize

I think we should go with no snapshots. Each project should have it's
own repository if people wants to be on the bleeding edge. I'm ok with
betas and alphas.

[jira] Commented: (MNG-325) Do something about interpolated values in dependencies

2005-04-19 Thread Dan Diephouse (JIRA)
 [ http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MNG-325?page=comments#action_37803 ]

Dan Diephouse commented on MNG-325:
---

I'm not really asking for interopolation to work. I'm just asking that you
don't let invalid maven 2 poms go into the repo. Invalid meaning the
dependencies specified don't exist. XOM 1.0b3 depends on stuff that doesn't
exist as well. It depends on icu4j which isn't in the repo at all.

Granted, some dependencies like javamail will never exist in the repo. So I'm
not sure quite what the action should be. I guess if any elements fit the
pattern of ${...} I think they should be taken out.

Re: results of synchronize

2005-04-19 Thread Brett Porter
Ok, for now I am excluding distributions from the sync and have
contacted ibiblio for help. We may need to make this a policy, since
activemq have a 500mb directory...

I'll see what they say and we can discuss options such as:
- not syncing distributions
- not syncing snapshots, or having a smaller repository that is purged
occasionally
- ???

Cheers,
Brett

[jira] Commented: (MNG-309) more repoclean enhancements

2005-04-19 Thread John Casey (JIRA)
 [ http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MNG-309?page=comments#action_37801 ]

John Casey commented on MNG-309:

blacklisting of disallowed jars from the repo conversion process isn't
practical from repoclean, because the preferred method (commenting out the
offending dep in the pom) would mean post-processing the output pom XML after
the MavenXpp3Writer is finished with it...and adding comments in such a
targeted fashion means re-parsing the XML to find the right spot to add...

As per Brett's direction, we're scrubbing this from the requirements for
repoclean for now, and we'll fix it properly in maven2 using pointer poms.

[jira] Commented: (MNG-325) Do something about interpolated values in dependencies

2005-04-19 Thread John Casey (JIRA)
 [ http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MNG-325?page=comments#action_37800 ]

John Casey commented on MNG-325:

If these are maven-1 pom's and they extend something, we probably can't
reliably convert it to a maven-2 pom, since the element uses local
filesystem paths.

In certain (probably rare) cases, if the parent is specified as:

${maven.repo.local}/myGroup/poms/myArtifact-version.pom

then it's possible that we may be able to extract the parent pom info and look
it up in the repository. This is not currently enabled, however.

I'll look into the specific cases for xfire, and we can probably add some
measure of interpolation, but be aware that the extends stuff will probably
never work reliably.

Duplicate class error

 Project: m2
Type: Bug
Versions: 2.0-alpha-1
 Environment: Linux, jdk 1.5
Reporter: LEONID ILYEVSKY

When java files are checked out from CVS for editing, a copy of the file gets
into
CVS/Base directory. Then m2 complains about duplicated classes while compiling
the
project.

Maven should ignore files under CVS directory. Probably, the same problem may
come up
while using some other tools.

Modify jsl to include a "Total" row at bottom of table. See attached image. My
code isn't 100%, but as you see it will calculate values correct even if there
are some "-" rows. For rows like "xx %", NaN will show up.

Jsl code is quite straight forward (could propably be re-written; my xpath
knowledge isn't _that_ good):

In the xfire poms, we extend the parent and have ${pom.currentVersion} in the

dependencies can be thrown out? Maybe pom.currentVersion can be filled in
automatically?

[m2] wrapping in a M2 plugin an Ant task that accesses a resource in a jar

2005-04-19 Thread Will Gwaltney
Hi all,

  I'm writing a maven plugin in java to wrap an Ant taskdef that we use in our
build process. I'm having some trouble accessing a resource in the jar that
contains the taskdef. The taskdef uses the following code to read the file:

 (snip)

   private static final String DEFAULT_TEMPLATE_FILE_NAME = "RB.template";

.
.
.

BufferedInputStream bis = new
BufferedInputStream(getClass().getResourceAsStream(DEFAULT_TEMPLATE_FILE_NAME));
if (bis == null)
  throw new
BuildException(MessageFormat.format("CreateResourceBundleClasses task could not
open RB template \"{0}\".",
new Object[] {
DEFAULT_TEMPLATE_FILE_NAME }));
BufferedOutputStream bos = new BufferedOutputStream(new
FileOutputStream(file));
byte bytes[] = new byte[Math.max(2048, bis.available())];

 (snip)

This works just great when the taskdef is run from Ant, but when I try to run
it from my maven plugin, the taskdef code throws in the bis.available() method.
 Here's stack trace:

John Casey commented on MNG-309:

How should we go about suppressing SUN jars, etc? Also, isn't that a larger
problem of wanting to suppress them from both m1 and m2 repositories, not just
the m2 repo?

I can start on a blacklist component of some sort, to suppress conversion, but
it still will not handle the m1 case.

I think all this is already supported in m2. For each artifact you can
already choose to which repository it will be deployed
so it is up to users to organize repository systems as they wish :). Only
missing parts are plugins which will mutate artifacts.
Your assemble plugin is really very good example which shows the way in
which such plugins could be written. I don't think that much more is needed
:)

Yes. Now I am sure that we are on the same page :).

I have one question - what's really the signification of tag in
POM?
Does it activate a plugin or does it tell maven what will be the type of the
main artifact or both?
(I am not only asking about current state of the implementation but also
about your plans regarding it- so please don't send me to read sources!)

Say that I have a plugin which takes existing war and somehow mutates it and
produces another war on output.
Will I still use war in such case?

I belive that multiple plugins can create artifacts of the same type.
so somehow I feel that either a tag is also needed in pom or plugins
should inform mave core (via metadata?) what types of artifacts are they
creating.

Also how install and deploy plugins will work when secondary artifacts are
going to be present?
