per an earlier message in the thread, I messed up the subject line. The
release (2.0-beta-4) happened.

So now this happened just before the Big Crash.

The release doesn't seem to have happened:

http://ibiblio.org/maven2/org/apache/maven/plugins/maven-release-plugin/

Should this be revoted ? Or just released?

After testing with the correct version of the plugin, a huge +1 from me.
I was only able to find one minor issue
(http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/SCM-197) everything else seemed perfect
on my large 20 module build.

Ok, you're not using the latest plugin. You're using 2.0-beta-4. Hence
why it has all the same problems 2.0-beta-3 had :)

Sorry sorry. You're using 2.0-beta-3 or an older version of beta-4. You
should be able to confirm via mvn help:describe -Dplugin=release

The release is indeed beta-4, not beta-5, and the snapshot you list is
correct. But you are definitely not using that one from the output you had.

RE: [vote] Release Release plugin 2.0-beta-5

2006-05-09 Thread Brian E. Fox
Some more observations:

1. It failed on pom checkin because my username was wrong (forgot
-Dusername=). After rerunning this with the correct parameter, it failed
because it tried to do a straight compile again (mentioned below).
Shouldn't it have known from the release.properties that it was already
past this step and just started from trying to checking again?

2. would be nice if I could say use the same version for all in a
multiproject build

3. It removed the xmlns= and other info from the project tag.

4. Still removes comments from the pom.

5. the new development version default is empty: [INFO] What is the new
development version for 'test.stchome.dsms.data.en.upgrad
e:wv'? [] and actually uses this version in the poms:
. Further, I checked the code to see if there was a
way to specify on the cli, but didn't find any.

6: it's still calling "m2" in release:perform, thus throwing the
deprecated error.

1-4 are annoying but possibly manageable given that it's a beta. # 5
though seems to be a show stopper for me. It's pretty annoying (and
error prone) to have to type the version 30 times to do a release.

If there is a chance of getting #5 fixed before this release, then I'd
vote for it, otherwise as it is now it's effectively no better for me
than the old one (although it is obviously much improved everywhere
else.). Alternatively, if we can release beta 5 soon after beta 4 with
this fix and not have to wait for lots of other fixes, I'd be ok with
that too. (and I'd be happy to supply some patches myself(

Fixing the output properly is actually on the JIRA list for 2.0. I don't
think forcing batch mode is the right solution (it should just be about
input).

But the point of the dry run is to review the files afterwards. A
perform on a dry run will fail as there is no corresponding SCM tag, but
its probably not elegant. Feel free to file this - we can record whether
it was a dry run in the properties and handle accordingly.

-- Comments were removed from my POMs for both the release and the next

Can you post a JIRA with the exact content up until and including the
root element? The whole POM would help if you are able to share it -
especially if there are any attributes on tags or spaces in tags.

Because parsers ignore comments before the root element, and you are
left to write the element yourself, I have a nasty hack in
place that pulls it out as a string, but relies on being able to
regenerate the rest of the POM without modification.

Thanks!

Other than these items, the plugin seems to run much better and is much
easier to use. It is nice that the questions are asked without other
garbage showing up between lines.

Cool - I'm sure the rest of these polish items can be done before a
final release, and in the mean time we can get some good feedback on the
beta.

Thanks for testing it!

Brett

RE: [vote] Release Release plugin 2.0-beta-5

2006-05-09 Thread Allison, Bob
It looks like a catch-22 to test this.

If I update the plugin configuration so I use the 2.0-beta-4-SNAPSHOT
version of the release plugin, release:prepare fails because I depend on
a snapshot version of a plugin.

If I change the version number to "2.0-beta-4-20060509.101136-3" (or
"2.0-beta-4-20060509.101136"), the plugin can't be found.

Re: [vote] Release Release plugin 2.0-beta-5

2006-05-09 Thread Brett Porter
Ideally, yes (that was also under a release vote, but a last minute
problem has been found).

It doesn't affect it's execution, just the build. It will build with an
old version, but you need to bump up the memory allocated due to the
surefire memory leak. I think fork = pertest might work too.

RE: [vote] Release Release plugin 2.0-beta-5

2006-05-09 Thread Allison, Bob
Is there a snapshot to use (if so, what is the URL?) or do I need to
build from SVN?

No, that's not a typo.

I'd like to vote to release the release plugin. It has been completely
rewritten since you last met it and now has over 250 unit tests covering

everything. Nearly all of the JIRA issues have been closed - a select
few were deferred to a 2.0 release. I'm working on a small set of docs
right now, which I expect will be elaborated on for the 2.0 release.

I've used it several times over the last few days and it seems to be
going well.

Hi,
+1 (user vote, happy user ;-) )
I have made a lot tests with a test case included in
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MRELEASE-103.
I don't understand why I need to set the -DconnectionUrl because this
should be picked up from developerConnection setted in the root pom ?
