Re: New logo?
Hi, I've been thinking -- whatever the animal (owl, or not), it would be really cool if it's wearing some sort of super-hero outfit with the letter M. After all, it's been Maven that has brought super-powers (and order) to our builds... :-) Just my my proposal... The background picture can be something what represents Maven project. I'm a bit late to catch up with this, but had a few things to note as I read through the thread - sorry to top-top-reply. I agree we should definitely consider a logo competition to augment this set of contributions. We should be cautious about using images from Native American culture - there are some good guidelines in previous contests: http://wiki.apache.org/solr/LogoContest Please consider a logo that either looks good in a square graphic, or has a reasonable variant that can! Think what you'd want to see in a favicon, or github/twitter/facebook/gravatar for the project. I know in the past the m has been used, but never felt like it was a very strong association. And I'm glad to see the back of the guy from the stock photo on the website (pun intended). - Brett On 17 Dec 2013, at 9:35 am, Stephen Connolly stephen.alan.conno...@gmail.com wrote: I have been playing with reworking our front page... When I first encountered maven I had come to the realization that all my ant projects were basically the same, and that there was no reason for customizing what was basically a standard process. So maven gives me associations to a mass-production line at a factory, rather than a tailor making individual processes. Furthermore, the lifecycle amplifies the idea of a conveyor-belt mass-production line; all parts move through the same conveyor belt process, stopping at individual stages to get work done. Re: New logo?
Well our current icon is somebody's arse behind a laptop... Which with a cleaner site looks a tad odd With the old header bar it was fine though I have no issue changing the font or colouring, but I think an actual icon or emblem is something good to have. There was some effort to pick a new font, and I would be happy to see examples with a different font... My typographic skills are not near the level of my poor sketching skills, so I have been hoping somebody else could tackle the lettering On Thursday, 2 January 2014, Mark Derricutt wrote: Is it me or are a lot of these purely changing the icon, not the logo. i.e. is the logo inclusive of the mAven name ( side question - why is the A always a different colour, historic Ant reference? ) On 3 Jan 2014, at 2:18, Stephen Connolly wrote: As 9 is particularly problematic I have sketched -14 which is not a direct copy of a silhouette. Am I reading this correctly if it's aboput $130 for a full logo contest including the rights for use ? If we can formulate some decent requirement specification, coughing up the money should be the least of our problems. Does the feather have to stay in its original shape/form? Interesting associations, to be sure. Since Maven conveys more of the meaning of Expert, rather than Builder, there might be a difficulty finding an appropriate animal logo. I'd say just pick a logo which sticks and doesn't make most people react too negatively - and we're there. 2013/12/18 Jason van Zyl ja...@tesla.io On Dec 18, 2013, at 10:20 AM, Benson Margulies bimargul...@gmail.com wrote: Personally, I think we need a new POM version to drive us forward. I agree. If no one else gets to it I'll write up something over the holidays to distill what Stephen has written and try and formalize some minimal requirements and desires. As a visual goes, I'd look for something like a beaver (who builds things) wearing geek eye-glasses (indicating 'it's a maven'). For the love of god (if that happens to be your thing) please do not use a beaver. Go ask your closest English speaking North American why that's not a good choice. No one wants to see the maven-beaver-plugin. Re: New logo?
I think the logo should emphasis what the name maven means: someone who is an expert or connoisseur. Actually, I think the glasses on that animal brings out that imagery -- although I would like to see it emphasized more. The expertise could be also include blocks since modules/projects are the building blocks of maven. Re: New logo?
+1 with the idea of a beaver or so. An animal building things would be a better match for Maven. The one you designed is already in the right direction. I would imagine one with an additional pencil on the ear and a helmet like this one for example: http://us.123rf.com/400wm/400/400/vasca/vasca1112/vasca11125/11698348-draw-of-funny-beaver-working-in-helmet.jpg . 2013/12/18 Stephen Connolly stephen.alan.conno...@gmail.com For Benson... and just to put another one in the hat... http://people.apache.org/~stephenc/maven-logo-contest/maven-4.png http://people.apache.org/~stephenc/maven-logo-contest/maven-4-big.png On 18 December 2013 15:38, Jason van Zyl ja...@tesla.io wrote: On Dec 18, 2013, at 10:20 AM, Benson Margulies bimargul...@gmail.com wrote: Personally, I think we need a new POM version to drive us forward.
