[native-lang] Need info about bouncer (was Annual report from the Danish NLC community)

2008-02-20 Thread Leif Lodahl

Hi Florian,
Sorry about the delay,
About a year ago I posted questions about bouncer on a few lists about
bouncer. I *might* be interested in this, because we have some problems
with the distibution in Denmark.

First, I have a few questions:

   * How do we get started ? (should I contact osuosl.org directly or..?)
   * Is bouncer a mirror network og just redirection ? (One of our
problems is, that the Danish mirror (sunsite.dk) is very weak and
 often fails).
   * Can bouncer provide statistics (Another problem for us is, that we
don't know if anyone is actually downloading OOo in Denmark )

Thanks in advance. And again, sorry about the late response

Hi Leif,

thanks for the report!

One of our goals for 2007 was to use Bouncer for handling the
downloads. We need that for two purposes:

1) activation of automatic update
2) download statistics. Unfortunately we didn't succeed on this issue
because no one has been able to tell us how it works.

who did you ask? Maybe I could help.

Hi,

Sorry about the delay,

no problem. :-)

   * How do we get started ? (should I contact osuosl.org directly or..?)

To add new builds, you are best off asking Joost Andrae at Sun, he
usually maintains this one and can tell you how to proceed.

   * Is bouncer a mirror network og just redirection ? (One of our

OOo builds are distributed on a lot of mirrors, also localized builds.
Some details can be found at http://distribution.openoffice.org/mirrors/
(see the categories). All mirrors with the appropriate category have the
Danish build.

The bouncer selects a good mirror on a variety of parameters, like your
region and the bandwith. You are being redirected to a mirror containing
the files you need.

   * Can bouncer provide statistics (Another problem for us is, that we
don't know if anyone is actually downloading OOo in Denmark )

I guess so, but Joost should know more details.

2008-02-20 Thread Joost Andrae

Hello Leif,

First, I have a few questions:

   * How do we get started ? (should I contact osuosl.org directly or..?)

to get a release into the mirror network the build should have a QA
approved status assigned to each build in
http://qatrack.services.openoffice.org
Additionally I need a please distribute build $xyz to the mirrors
issue like eg.

http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=86004

Then I will add that build to the mirror network. If that build is not a
Sun provided build then it would help to have MD5SUMS of the files which
I can check against.

   * Is bouncer a mirror network og just redirection ? (One of our
problems is, that the Danish mirror (sunsite.dk) is very weak and
 often fails).

Bouncer can be understood as load balancer service. Mirrors sites are
registered within Bouncer. Bouncer checks for availability of the builds
on the mirrors configured.

   * Can bouncer provide statistics (Another problem for us is, that we
don't know if anyone is actually downloading OOo in Denmark )

There are some logstats (daily statistics) available here:
http://openoffice.bouncer.osuosl.org/logstats/

The total number of downloads is available only from within the Bouncer
application and it's not language specific.

Kind regards, Joost
