Dear community,

This is our first voting candidate for the 12.1 release of Apache
NetBeans. It is built off the same commit as 12.1-beta4. Please note
all requirements below for validating sources and convenience binaries

Apache NetBeans 12.1 constitutes all clusters in the Apache NetBeans
Git repo, which together provide the NetBeans Platform (i.e., the
underlying application framework), as well as all the modules that
provide the Java SE, Java EE, PHP, JavaScript and Groovy features of
Apache NetBeans.

Build artefacts are available here :
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/netbeans/netbeans/12.1/vc1

nb-javac

2020-08-28 Thread Ernie Rael

Hi all,

IIRC the idea was to stop using nb-javac; from what I remember of the
various discussions nb-javac primarily speeds things up, and that work
could be done to improve performance without nb-javac; functionality was
on par. I have no idea about the efforts for nb-javac, just wonder if
it's the best use of resources.

I guess the goal has changed; seems like planning for longer term use
nb-javac.

Not with Java 11 it isn't. Not sure about the current state, exactly.
Personally I was in favour of dropping in 12.1 when this last came up,
but that would lead to no Java editing support on Java 8, and problems
on 11. Others better to comment from a technical perspective.
Definitely would make some aspects of release easier unless we get
schedules better aligned.

Perhaps aiming to drop after Java 17 lands is a better bet? Or was
possibly even decided last time this came up?

Not (strictly) our resources. Also a pro and a con, which is why I
asked about code hosting elsewhere so others in the community could
more easily work with it, although it cannot be developed here.

Best wishes,

Neil
